I took this shot back in April. It’s a view of what I see every day during the last leg of my commute home. The grass will grow longer and turn brown by June, and the deciduous oaks will fill in and darken, but this is the mise en scène of southern Sonoma County.

I was hanging out on the patio after a day of yard work when I saw this alligator lizard pop out of a cranny to catch some warm spring sun rays. I quickly fetched my camera and fired off a few shots. The 70-300mm zoomed all the way in made for a very shallow depth of field view of the lizard, and a nice headshot.

A “weed” yes, but the Salsify root is edible.

Old man cactus

This past weekend I payed around a bit with my prime lenses set at various shutter and ISO settings at f/4 and below. This example is a tweaked crop of the top of the old man cactus on our patio. When I took the shot the cactus was in full shade and the backdrop was a totally hot midday sunlit field. Obviously, the depth of field was VERY shallow. I used Photoshop to pull the detail out of the shadows which, in turn, homogenized the background. Why not?

Spring bloom at the Golden Gate

Pride of Madeira and Monkey Flower are in full bloom on the edges of the San Francisco Bay. I took this “intimate” shot at Fort Baker on a brief stop today during my commute home.

I’m in transition right now (all good!) so my posting will be spotty for a short while. In the interim, to fill in for the days I don’t get to shoot, I may post the occasional commute photo (which I’m transitioning from), or I may go to the archives and pull something out for fun. This one is of band mates, friends and the chartreuse cap at the waterfront in Seattle during The Mad Maggies “Big Ass Van” tour in March.
