Making Money Online - Part 4

With the success I got at selling royalty-free photos on Fotolia, I've decided to branch out to iStockphoto this year. So far so good. Getting approved to be a contributor might be a tad bit difficult but it is all good as it ensures that the photos you submit are of good quality and if they're not, well you can resubmit again - either a corrected photo or a completely new one. Overall, the whole process helps push you to become a better photographer... and of course lets you make some money along the way.

42 Gilstead Road - Part 3

The main building at 42 Gilstead Road is connected to the servants' quarters via a shaded walkway.

And here are the lovely tiles of the walkway, which I'm sure would be hacked away during demolition.

By the walkway, there is an outdoor sink and a cupboard on the wall.

Not too sure about the Marmite!

Ok, now looking down the walkway again but this time towards the main building.

42 Gilstead Road - Part 2

Behind the main building at 42 Gilstead Road, there is another smaller building. Perhaps servants' quarters. This is the view of it from the back...

From the front... this is how it looks like.

It comprises of a few small rooms filled up with what seems to be junk from the main building. In one of these rooms there is an old Chopper bicycle and there are some old school notes. Most of the doors are opened...

And some are closed...

I didn't dare open the door as I didn't want dust and spiders to emerge.

The very last room at the end was a bedroom... a very messy one.

Next post, we will look at the other things around the back of the house by the servants' quarters.

42 Gilstead Road

This is another one of my favourites on Gilstead Road... Number 42, which is slated to be torn down to make way for 18 freehold villas.

Going up the driveway, you've got to be careful of the durians overhead. From what I understood from a Filipino maid on the street, the durians drop onto the main road and can be found in the morning.

Here's the porch of the house. As you can see, additional supports have been added onto the structure to hold it in place. The porch also spots some decorative ionic pillars.

The main building itself has an interesting looking roof, which is flat at the top. Not sure what style it is. Perhaps colonial Dutch?

25 Gilstead Road

Whilst looking up the history of places around me, I came across one interesting find - Number 25, Gilstead Road.

Apparently what is now Gracefields Kindergarten was formerly the family home of Leslie Charteris, the creator of The Saint. It was then called Westbourne, the name which can still be seen on the gateposts of the building today.

During World War II, the building became the Kriegsmarine Headquarters.

Then in 1957, it was the temporary headquarters of St. John's Ambulance.

Eventually, the house was renamed Field House... probably after Dr. Elaine Field who set up the place to care for spastic children.

At the Republic Food Court at Vivo City, I came across an Indonesian food stall called Java Kitchen and since I was craving for spicy food that day... I decided to give the nasi rames a go.

This rice dish came with a delicious chicken drumstick, some vegetables (sayur lodeh), some kind of crunchy crackers which are sorta sweet and spicy, sambal, cucumber, some other meat thing (I think) and a hard boiled egg. It was not too bad and was quite filling.

Meal came to SGD6.

Every night, the Moosh Cat comes by my room. Does a little meow, rubs against the chair I'm sitting on as I work on the computer then settles down on the rug. He'll usually flop over on his side and expose the cute cream-coloured tuft on his chest and stretch out the whole length of his body as much as he can. He'll do that for awhile just to get my attention in hopes of me scratching his belly and neck. Tonight, surprisingly... to the chorus of frogs croaking outside my window, he is sleeping on the rug and not moving at all. Not like other nights where after awhile he gets up from the rug and wanders off. Ah... the Moosh Cat.

Looking To Move - Part 2

So I've been on the flat-share hunt as of late and am wondering if people actually are looking for flatmates or prisoners... Seen on many postings for flatmates or flat rentals - "No Cooking Allowed." Oh and best yet, there was one that advertised - "Cooking allowed but instant noodles only!" Then there's the "No friends allowed" policy. So basically not only can you not cook but you are expected to have just about zilch social life or any sort of friends. If the person was a hermit, they'd be living in a cave, not a flat. Can landlords be a little more realistic?

Shallow Grave

"I'm not ashamed. I've known love. I've known rejection. I'm not afraid to declare my feelings. Take trust, for instance, or friendship: these are the important things in life, these are the things that matter, that help you on your way. If you can't trust your friends, well, what then? What then? This could have been any city: they're all the same."

This is one of my favourite films of all time and it brings back a lot of memories for me. I watched it when it came out more than 10 years ago in a Sony Theatre in NYC. It was also the first time I heard of director Danny Boyle and the group, Leftfield, who had a great opening track to the film. Since then I've been a great fan of both.

If you reckon you can understand Scottish accents... then you'll most likely be able to enjoy this film, which explores the themes of friendship, trust, greed and subtleties of male-female interactions. Not much gore at all but the suspense is enough to get you squirming in your seat. The edit style was also what caught my eye and made this film an all-time favourite - fresh and modern, slick and stylish... would be how I describe it.
