Talking to Dawn.com from an undisclosed area, TTP spokespersons Ehsanullah Ehsan said that the offer for peace talks made by Prime Minister-elect Nawaz Sharif was a positive sign and that the militant organisation was devising a strategy over the course of action to be taken in response to the peace talk offers.

Sources told that,  the newly elected independent people who were won over by the PML-N include 13 MNAs-elect and 36 MPAs-elect from Punjab.

Those who were received with garlands at Sharifs’ residence in Raiwind include Owais Leghari, Raza Hayat Hiraj, Asghar Shah, Abdur Rehman Kanju, Siddiq Baloch and Tahir Iqbal.

According to the statement issued by the MQM’s coordination committee, the party’s membership of Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC) member Farooq Saleem has also been suspended.

The statement also issued instructions to the MQM workers not to maintain any direct or indirect contact with any of the suspended members.

It further stated that the party chief Altaf Hussain is busy in the continuous process of cleansing undesirable elements from the MQM. Altaf is working 21 to 22 hours a day.

Consultations among the members of coordination committee are also part of the process, the statement added.

On Wednesday, Altaf Hussain addressing the members of the coordination committee via telephone at Nine Zero, expressed resolve to cleanse the party.

He said MQM strictly prohibits collection of donation and warned that if any office bearer or worker is found involved in this practice his basic membership will be revoked.

Altaf said MQM adheres to the policy of ‘zero tolerance’ when it comes to the instances of illegal occupation of land, plots, residences and shops or their sale/purchase, and advised that in case any member of his party is directly or indirectly involved in such practices he should voluntarily tender his resignation.

Researchers in a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, said that it was unclear why such a strong link between depression and stroke had been found, but that it was possible that inflammatory and immunological responses to depression could have an impact on blood vessels.

The study found that depressed women had a 2.4 times increased risk of stroke, compared to those who weren’t depressed, which reduced to 1.9 times the risk when other factors increasing stroke risk were excluded.

Study author Doctor Caroline Jackson, an epidemiologist in the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland in Australia, said: “When treating women, doctors need to recognise the serious nature of poor mental health and what effects it can have in the long term.

“Current guidelines for stroke prevention tend to overlook the potential role of depression.”

The research is the first large-scale study in which scientists examined the association between depression and stroke in younger middle-aged women.

The researchers said that although the increased stroke risk associated with depression was large, the absolute risk of stroke is still fairly low for women of that age.

About 1.5 per cent of all women in the study suffered a stroke.

Researcher added: “We may need more targeted approaches to prevent and treat depression among younger women, because it could have a much stronger impact on stroke for them now rather than later in life.” AFP

Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) won one seat each for National Assembly and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s provincial assembly from Chitral’s NA-32 and PK-90 constituency.

The APML had announced a boycott of the general elections 2013 after the rejection of Musharraf’s nomination papers from all provinces and the imposition of a lifetime ban.

However, some of the party candidates had decided to stay in the field despite the boycott.

Iftikhar ud Din won the NA-32 seat with 19,938 votes, defeating his nearest rival from the Tehrik-i-Insaf Pakistan led by Imran Khan.

Ghulam Mohammad, APML candidate from PK-90, won his seat securing 10,646 against Pakistan Peoples Party candidate who had received 10,524 votes.

In PK-89 constituency, the Pakistan People’s Party’s Saleem Khan with 11,285 votes defeated APML’s Shehzada Khalid.

Musharraf, 69, currently is under house arrest on judicial remand at his Chak Shehzad residence, which was declared as a sub-jail, after a bench of the Islamabad High Court rejected the extension of his bail in the 2007 judges detention case.

Musharraf returned to Pakistan on March 23 after more than four years in self-exile to participate in the upcoming elections.

Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, who was driving, was hit by several bullets and lost control of the car. The vehicle hit a woman crossing the road and she too died later in hospital.

His bodyguard, Frontier Corps trooper Farman Ali, was injured in the attack.

Zulfiqar Ali was heading for an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi for a hearing of the Bhutto assassination case when he was attacked, his son Nisar told the media.

The prosecutor and his bodyguard were taken to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.

Some doctors said he was killed instantly as several bullets had hit him in the face.

The gunmen escaped after the brazen shooting. However, no group claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to relatives, the prosecutor had been receiving threats from a banned extremist group for some time.

His colleagues said he had continued pursing high-profile terrorism cases despite these threats.

The Anti-Terrorism Court Rawalpind had to hear the bail application of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf. The counsel of Musharraf had on Friday filed a plea in the court for exemption from attendance in the case hearing. In the application, Musharraf requested the court to allow him exemption from attending the hearing due to security concerns. The Benazir Bhutto murder case’s hearing was adjourned until May 14. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 while Musharraf was president. She was killed after addressing an election campaign rally in the city. The ATC had indicted Musharraf in the case in February 2011, and in August the same year he was declared a proclaimed offender and his property was attached because of his absence. Musharraf returned to Pakistan last month after nearly four years of self-imposed exile to contest the May 11 general election.

People are dying of hunger and starvation while the rulers are collecting wealth for their vested interests. Sarabjit Singh was attacked by two other inmates at the Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore on Friday. He had received serious head injuries.

Sarabjeet Singh was shifted to the (ICU) of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, amid tight security after providing him initial treatment at the prison hospital.

The inmates  identified as Rizwan and Amir who attacked Sarabjeet Singh— were on the death row. Police registered a case against two prisoners under the attempt to murder Sarabjeet Singh.

In 1991 Sarabjit was given the death sentence under the Pakistan’s Army Act. His sentence was upheld by the High Court and later by the Pakistan Supreme Court. The Supreme Court dismissed his petition to review his death sentence in March 2006 as Sarabjit’s lawyers failed to appear for the hearing.Sarabjit said that his appeal had been dismissed by the Pakistan Supreme Court for non-prosecution only because of lack of interest by his former lawyer.

On 3 March 2008, the erstwhile President Pervez Musharraf rejected his mercy petition.

On June 26 2012, the President of Pakistan decided to release Sarabjit but a few hours later, amidst condemnation by the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Jamaat-ud-Da’wah clarified that the prisoner to be released was Surjeet Singh and not Sarabjit

Thousands of Spaniards turned out against new cuts introduced by the government. Those injured include 33 police officers and 43 protesters – miners and their supporters. Minor arrests have been made so far, with eight people being detained.

Three of those arrested reportedly threw bricks at police. The police have confirmed that there were no miners among the arrested. Protesters panicked and sought shelter as police began to disperse the crowd, Olvidio Gonzalez, 67, a retired miner from the northern Asturias region told news reporters. “We were walking peacefully to get to where the union leaders were speaking and they started to fire indiscriminately,” said Gonzalez, who was also struck by a rubber bullet. Witnesses and demonstrators claim that police started the attack without any warning. “We were eating quietly when they began to appear with several police vans. Then we started to shout and some threw a few bottles, which gave rise to the charge,” Hermann, a miner from the small town of Langreo in northern Spain, told El Pais. About 200 people remained surrounded by dozens of police in front of parliament.

The assailants opened fire on convoy from near by mountains critically injuring four security guards of Shahwani. The injured were immediately rushed to Mach hospital for medical treatment. A large number of law enforcement personnel  reached the spot and cordoned off the area as investigations into the incident went underway.

The remand which is to last until April 30 was ordered by the Rawalpindi anti-terrorist court which has been hearing the case pertaining to the assassination of the former premier. Musharraf is to remain at his farmhouse residence at Chak Shahzad during the period of his physical remand. Earlier on Thursday, the FIA had formally arrested Musharraf and had interrogated him in the case. The agency had taken the step after securing permission from the ATC. Investigating agency FIA had pleaded to the trial court for five days physical remand of Musharraf in Benazir Bhutto case but the court granted four days physical remand. In 2010 a UN report said Mrs Bhutto’s death could have been prevented and accused General Musharraf’s government of failing to give her adequate protection.
