CKD | The kidneys are two bean-shaped, fist-sized organs located in the back of the abdomen. Their work of scrubbing waste from blood is unglamorous. Think of them as the body’s housekeeping staff, toiling quietly, but vitally, behind the scenes.

Now these intricate filters are increasingly under siege, bearing the brunt of some of the world’s most prevalent chronic diseases.

The kidneys are casualties of soaring rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes and metabolic syndromes, said Diana Jalal, MD, associate professor of renal medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. These conditions, which damage the kidneys and decrease their ability to function, have in turn spurred a significant increase in the prevalence of chronic kidney disease, or CKD.

A two-foot wisp of plastic weighing a fraction of an ounce could become a heavyweight ally to patients struggling to subdue their obesity and dial back complications such as type 2 diabetes.

University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center researchers, led by Holly Wyatt, MD, are part of a national trial of the EndoBarrier, a medical device made by Lexington, Mass.-based GI Dynamics, Inc. that is designed to control weight.

In the next six months, Wyatt and colleagues hope to recruit 20 adults with a combination of high body mass index (BMI) and poorly controlled diabetes to see just how well the EndoBarrier actually works. It’s the first major medical device trial the Wellness Center has hosted since opening its doors a year ago, Wyatt said.

It probably won’t be the last.

Cookies for breakfast!!! Sounds to good to be healthy and true but give this recipe a try and see if this wakes the family out of bed in the morning. At only 93 calories and 3.5 grams of fat per serving this could be one of the best ways to start the day.

Endovascular| Sometimes science seems to contradict common sense. Physicists have proven, for example, that atoms can be in two places at once, spookily entangled in time and space. Now physicians tell us that physically removing blood clots from arteries in a stroke-compromised brain has no obvious impact on the outcomes of those patients.

Three prominent studies the New England Journal of Medicine published Feb. 8 (Interventional Management of Stroke (IMS) III, SYNTHESIS Expansion, MR RESCUE) all found that the endovascular removal of stroke-causing blockages in concert with an intravenous dose of clot-dissolving tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was no better for a patient’s recovery at 90 days than using tPA alone.

                    VAP | by Tyler Smith

VAP | Four years ago, the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at University of Colorado Hospital began a drive to reduce the number of patients that contracted ventilator-associated pneumonia, or VAP, a preventable condition that many health care providers at the time nonetheless considered a risk that couldn’t be avoided.

The work began in 2009 as a unit-based project for Neuro ICU nurse Meredith Snyder, RN, who was pursuing certification as a level III clinical nurse through UEXCEL, the hospital’s professional development program for nurses.

Snyder learned that the unit’s VAP rate was 8.5 per 1,000 ventilator days, well above the NDNQI (National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators) benchmark of 3.1. She set out to pull together evidence-based practices that help prevent VAPs and roll the guidelines out to nurses in an organized program.

African American Health

African American Health| African Americans are at an increased risk of poor health due to a variety of social and economic factors. Only 15.3% of Coloradans are in fair or poor health, compared to 21.5% of African Americans in Colorado.*

Every February we, as a nation, celebrate Black History Month. This is a time to celebrate the accomplishments and culture of African Americans. It's also a time to reflect on past and present challenges facing African Americans. One such challenge is the disparity in access to health care and health outcomes found between racial and ethnic groups. Colorado's African Americans are more likely to be in fair or poor health and to be impacted by chronic diseases than Coloradans as a whole. These disparities exist due to a variety of social factors, as well as poorer access to health care and preventive services.

Orthopedic Trauma| Being a tertiary-care institution means University of Colorado Hospital often takes the toughest cases, ones referred by other institutions that lack the expertise to help a patient fully recover from injury or illness. Yet for years, UCH was referring some of its most challenging orthopedic trauma cases to other hospitals. That raised eyebrows among reviewers from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which holds the keys to UCH’s status as a Level II trauma center.

In the state’s 2012 review, the Trauma Program received a “criteria deficiency” for its lack of capacity in orthopedic trauma – cases involving serious bone and joint injuries. Although the response to the deficiency has been multifaceted, one element stands out: On Dec. 17, Jason Stoneback, MD, joined the CU School of Medicine’s orthopedic surgery faculty.

Laser Facial Treatment| As you may have read, I visited the UCH Visage Center at Park Meadows back in September thinking I had scored a cushy assignment: get a facial treatment and write about it. But, instead of something relaxing and soothing, I got my face laser tagged.

Nonetheless, I recently decided to return – hoping it wouldn’t be for more punishment.

To recap: Michelle Young, the Visage Center’s aesthetician, prescribed the laser skin resurfacing, which uses the Lux1540, a “fractional non-ablative laser.” She thought the treatment would have the most beneficial and long-lasting benefits for my skin, although she cautioned the results would be subtle and slow in coming.

ECMO Adult | by Tyler Smith for the University of Colorado Hospital Insider

ECMO Adult | Victor Carlos knew he didn’t feel like himself. In early December, he thought he had nothing more than an annoying common cold. But then came the cough that wouldn’t go away, accompanied by chills and fever, shortness of breath, and a loss of concentration. He started bumping into things.

He was diagnosed with an influenza infection – he and wife Brenda Voglewede had gotten their kids vaccinated, but not themselves. When Carlos reported his worsening symptoms to his internists, he was twice told he’d need to ride it out.

That didn’t seem unreasonable. The 41-year-old Carlos was in otherwise good health and was unusually fit. He’d completed three marathons between 2010 and 2012.

ECMO |The patient wasn’t one you’d expect would be brought to death’s door by lung disease but he was saved by ECMO.

But in December he arrived at the Emergency Department at University of Colorado Hospital in severe respiratory distress. Providers intubated him, then put him on a ventilator.
