That’s So Gay is the Gladstone Hotel’s annual gay pride art exhibition that explores themes around sexuality, gender and identity. That’s So Gay 2013 is curated by Elisha Lim.

“That’s So Gay” was originally a flirty protest reclaiming an insult in the face of homophobia. This year’s exhibit pushes its community another step, to cross the line of racial and cisgendered segregation of both the traditional and queer art canons.

The result is a reckoning with violence and bonding: a brown genderqueer self-portrait of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, distorted diasporic family portraits, fragments of transit life in an airport lounge, estranged exes holding each others’ hands for the photographer, decapitated minotaurs twining themselves erotically around each other and a haunted line of Aboriginal armour and accessories.

Much of the work has been curated internationally from New York, Paris, Melbourne and Montreal, but it also mines local history with meditated research into Canadian histories of sex work, slavery and genocide.

This exhibit aspires to plumb the depths and contradictions and intersections of identity – and more than just scratch the surface of “gay”.

So say it and mean it. Say it to my face.

After spending nearly one and a half years in the wonderful city of Melbourne, Australia, I have finally said goodbye.

Melbourne, with your streets filled with mural, graffitti and wall art, your dozens of gorgeous local cafes (L’atelier de Monsieur Truffe), the best coffee outside of Italy (Seven Seeds), fantastic earth-friendly, healthy food (Yong Green Food), a thriving regional contemporary art community with museum presence (NGV), random, amazing acts of craft and crochet, cast-iron lace balconies, the uplifting scent of eucalyptus trees, all things stylish, and fantastic people, I miss you.

As I return to Toronto, Canada, I would like to say a very special thank you to all the wonderful people and businesses that made me feel welcome in Australia and helped me navigate this new city: Global Arts Projects, Blak Dot Gallery, Fitzroy Stretches, St. Luke Artist Colourmen, Hayden Golder Photography, The Orange Mystique, The Highway Gallery, Frames Readymade, TextaQueen, Sangeeta Sandrasegar, Mark the Mechanic, fellow artists and friends. South Asian Visual Arts Centre) is pleased to present Velocity: the rate of change of position, an annual juried members’ exhibition that features innovative and contemporary artworks by emerging and mid-career artists from SAVAC’s membership. Every year, SAVAC invites proposals for new or recently completed artworks through an open call. A jury comprising of artists, curators and SAVAC members select works based on artistic merit and new approaches and ideas on themes surrounding contemporary South Asian identities and experiences.

Velocity: the rate of change of position brings together artworks by Arwa Abouon (Montreal), Sharlene Bamboat (London, UK/Toronto), Pritika Chowdhry (Madison, USA), Shireen Kamran (Montreal), Meera Sethi (Toronto) and Meera Margaret Singh (Toronto) that explore the parallels and divergences between our daily routines and the rapidly changing urban environment. The artists engage with fragmented and interconnected narratives from multiple histories to develop works that resonate with the current times.

SAVAC will host an opening reception and artist talks for Velocity: the rate of change of position on 18 September 2010, 3pm to 6pm at the Function 13 Gallery (156 Augusta Avenue). Entrance to the opening and artist talks is free.
