BIG CLUE - Look for a cluster of 3 or more of the following signals when reading female body language. Of course if you take some of these just on face value it could mean anything. Its how they are packaged i.e done in quick succession and targeted at the same person.

We repeat this throughout this website, in the workshops, in courses and at speed dating - you MUST look for clusters of these signals.

She keeps glancing over - Its human nature we keep looking towards who we are attracted to. The trick is to find out as some girls can be prone to avoid the one they are attracted to. Of course they cannot make it easy for you guys. So don't despair if you can't see her looking initially - she may be without you knowing!.

Extended eye contact - No better way to make a guy's blood start rushing than with extended eye contact. Don't worry if it makes you feel funny - run with it and enjoy feeling a bit uncomfortable. It can make your ego soar through the roof!

Touching - If she breaks the contact barrier during conversation, its a big sign. Of course some women are naturally very touchy, so again see if she is like that with other people.

Plays with her hair or object when looking at you - Part of the preening process, she is comfortable enough to show you she feels feminine around you.

Exposes palm of her hands facing you - Look for the tell tale signs whether she is closed off or open to you. This is what we call the 'non-verbal leakage' she isn't controlling. If she is open with you and lets you in, its a better sign than you might think!

He went on like this for about 10 minutes without stopping or asking her questions. She was just sitting there nodding slightly every so often and looking bored. Prepare

The last thing you want is to be sitting having a meal and the conversation dries up, leaving you bored with each other for the rest of the night. Think about your date and what you would like to know about her, and in return what you would like her to know about you. You think that it is easy to talk, and that you will not run out of questions to ask, or that you will automatically have the answers. But until you are there and in the situation, you have no idea what it will be like. You can avoid all of this by meeting for a quick drink, then go on to see a film, so you have something obvious to talk about.

Who Will Pay?

This is a really tough question since women are increasingly independent and may want to pay their way. I suggest that you offer to pay and, if she lets you, take care of the bill. If she wants to pay, you can argue that you want to, but make sure you pay for at least half no matter what.

The Goodnight Kiss

Some women prefer not to kiss after a date while others are disappointed if the guy doesn't even try. There is no easy answer to this. Wait until either she makes the first move or it's very obvious that you are both ready. Watch out for body language and little touches. And I would strongly advise sex on the first date.

I'll Call You

Only tell her that you will call her if you mean it and intend on seeing her again. Taking Small Steps

No one expects you to be the next great pick up artist by tomorrow, so don't expect it of yourself. Instead, start small, and realize that it takes time to become good with women.

My friend Stacy works for a technology company and she struggles to make friends. She’s in the customer service department, and is on the phone most of the day. When it’s time to go to lunch, no one from her department can go with her because they take lunches in shifts.

She feels awkward about going up to people and introducing herself. She’s not sure what to do because she likes the work, but not the job.

I’ve been in her position. I worked for a small leather manufacturing company that sold toy horse saddles, wallets and brief cases. I was stuck making sales calls all day long, and I disliked the job as a result of my lack of social interactions.

I highly value finding and making friends at work. It can make the difference between loving and hating a job.

This post will not be about directing you to break out of your shell and be outgoing. This post is about helping various kinds of personalities figure out the best way to make friends at work.

Everyone is different and has individual needs.

Personality Types

Shy

If you are afraid of rejection then you probably have some instances in your past that hold you back from making new friendships. I’m not going to go all “Freud” on you and make you dive into your past. You don’t need to overcome these feelings to make new friends. You need to acknowledge that this plays a big role in your social interactions.

Let’s say Stacy is afraid of just going up to people and saying something as simple as, “Hi, I’m Stacy.”

Stacy has to play to her strengths. Instead of reaching out, she needs to figure out how to get people to reach out to her. I would suggest that she makes cookies for every department with whom she is in contact. Send them all an email explaining that she appreciates their help and these cookies are the best way she knows how to show them that she cares.

If someone made cookies for my department, I sure as heck would walk up to them and say thank you.

Instead of being the hunter, a person who is shy needs to figure out alternative methods that bring people to his/her world.

Grumpy

Some of my favorite people have been my grumpy co-workers. They are a pain because a lot of them like to complain, but my take on it is that they just feel every situation very deeply.

The only way they know how to deal with it is to be grumpy.

If you are a grumpy person 2 out of 5 days a week then you have to put yourself in the grump category. This isn’t a bad label, just one you have to work with.

You can do this by being a good empathizer. People love to complain. If people know that they can come to you for support and a “friendly ear,” it can make a job easier to handle.

We all need stress relief. Giving people stress relief will endear you to many of your co-workers. Be forewarned that you may be putting yourself in the empathizer role, which means people will keep coming to you to vent.

Outgoing

Everyone thinks that the outgoing person has the easiest time making friends. This isn’t necessarily true. They may talk to a lot of people, but still may not have any close friends upon whom they can rely.

Outgoing people usually aren’t very good listeners. I’m not here to tell you to develop your listening skills. I’m here to tell you to go with your strengths.

If you are outgoing, then get people laughing.

We all love a good joke to release some tension and create a fun experience. You may want to memorize a joke each morning for the next couple of weeks. What usually happens is people will want to laugh with you. They will want to tell jokes too. This is where you need to step back and let other people shine.

You get the laughing rolling then let other people join in.

Black Sheep (aka weird one)

I always considered myself the black sheep. I think many of us consider ourselves to be the black sheep in the family when we first start working a job.

Black sheep like to think of themselves as weird and special. We are all weird and special in our own way. I love to do push-ups in the park when I take a break. I have a co-worker who talks about her kid every single day and all day long.

We all have quirks. It’s up to you to find people’s quirks and accept them. If someone loves “The Simpsons” then talk to them about it. Make them share their lives with you. When they start sharing who they are they will consider you a friend – a friend who loves them for them, without any judgments.

Relaxed

If you are a laid back person who just goes with the flow, good for you. I wish I had that ability. I’m actually working on letting this become a larger part of my personality.

The problem is that people who are laid back and relaxed usually don’t ignite friendships. They are so liaise-fair that no one becomes attached to them.

When you are a “relaxer” at work, you need to show other people that you care. When someone talks about one task that they struggle with during the day, try to bring it up the next day to show them that you were listening.

Showing people that you care about them will allow them to care about you.

Making friends in the real world can be hard. You need to overcome issues of trust, intimacy, vulnerability and, sometimes, conflicting loyalties. But the payoff matches the effort: a good friend is invaluable.

In the world of online social networks, the word "friend" is a lot less meaningful; it includes your most casual of virtual acquaintances. Until you have a chance to build a certain level of trust with them, respect and affection, your interaction with your online friends (a.k.a. "buddies" or "contacts", depending on which social network you're using) will often be the digital equivalent of nodding at each other as you pass in the hall.

The good news? It's much, much easier to make "friends" than to make friends. These folks will come in two flavours: people you already know from elsewhere, and people you've met through this particular social network. Here are some tips for adding people from both groups to your buddy list. We'll use Facebook as the example, but many of the tips here will work just as well on other services:

Start with the obvious: Tools like address book importing and search will actually take you a long way. But you may be surprised at just how many of your friends aren't in your address book, or who signed up with different email addresses than the ones you have for them, or whose names don't jump to mind when you're searching. So you'll need to use some of these other strategies.
Find friends from work and school: Once you've entered your work and education history in your profile, Facebook lets you browse people who also worked for your past employers, as well as people who graduated in the same year as you did. And don't limit yourself to that one year. Facebook also lets you choose other graduating years. Chances are you knew people who graduated a year or two before or after you.
Look for birds of a feather: Scope out the groups that speak to your interests... especially niche interests. Browse the member lists for names you recognize.
Use a friend to find a friend: Just as you'll often run into one friend talking with another in the real world, chances are good your online friends have already linked up with other folks you know. Flip through their friends lists and you're bound to run into somebody.
Participate: Did you ever read those Ann Landers columns where someone would write in asking how they could meet people, and Ann would suggest that they get involved in their local church? The same thing works well in social networking sites. Start a group or join an existing one, and get active. Post on the wall. Comment on forum posts and people's notes. As you take part, you'll also get to know new people – and you'll soon be sending them friendship invitations, if you haven't received them yourself.
Bag on the boilerplate: I know we're using Facebook as an example, but I can't resist adding a LinkedIn tip. When you invite someone to join your network, don't use the canned boilerplate text that LinkedIn gives you. Instead, write a personal invitation, something in your own voice that makes some reference to your relationship with the recipient. You'll start getting a lot more of your invitations accepted.

The Golden Key to Meeting Success

We all attend many meetings. I’m sure you have been to some great meetings and some poor ones. Unfortunately for everyone I’ve ever talked to, the number of poor ones far outweighs the number of great ones.

The fact is that most meetings are too long, unfocused, too frustrating, and unproductive.

And yet meetings are a valuable way to gain collective understanding, buy-in, agreement, and consensus. They help us find better solutions and create cooperation, collaboration, colleagueship, and community.

Since meetings are necessary and can lead to important results, we need to figure out how to make more of them successful. I have helped and watched organizations create more effective meetings by doing several things, including teaching people how to use some basic roles, setting some expectations around meeting effectiveness, providing specific tools for people to use, improving the skills of those facilitating the meetings, and many more things.

Each of these things has a positive impact on meeting effectiveness and productivity. None of them individually has a more positive impact than one key – what I call the Golden Key – to meeting success.

The Golden Key

The Golden Key is determining the desired outcome(s) for the meeting.

Think about it. If you are going to have a meeting, inviting 2 or more (often many more) people to join you, shouldn’t you be clear on what you want to accomplish? And shouldn’t all of the other people you are inviting be equally clear?

Unfortunately, all too often this isn’t the case, and this lack of clear focus on the end goal leads to inefficiency and frustration.

Planning Your Meeting

Once you have determined that a meeting is needed, you need to determine the desired outcome(s) for your meeting. Do that by asking yourself questions like:

• What do I want to leave the meeting with?

• What will describe a completely successful meeting?

Or more directly,

• What is the desired outcome of this meeting?

There may be just one, or for a longer or more complex meeting there may be several. Get down these ideas down on a piece of paper or on your computer screen. Then, take the time to craft these ideas into very specific noun/verb, past tense statements, like:

• Budget reviewed.

• Options identified.

• Decision made.

• Next step determined.

• Action plan finalized.

You get the idea.

Once you have written your desired outcome statement(s) you can include them with whatever agenda format you use and communicate these to everyone who will be attending the meeting.

If you haven’t done this planning before the meeting starts, determining these desired outcomes is the first order of business for your meeting.

How Does The Golden Key Unlock Better Meetings?

Desired outcomes provide focus and clarity. By given everyone a common understanding of what the meeting will accomplish (rather than the “topics” that will be “covered”), you will experience more effectiveness, fewer side conversation and fewer personal agendas.

It is as simple as giving people a common goal. When they have the common goal, progress will be much faster – and more often within the planned timeline for the meeting.

The value of stating them in noun/verb past tense form is to make them as free of ambiguity as possible, and when the statements are written this way, it is clear when the objective has been met. (How many times have you been in a meeting discussing a topic that goes longer than most want or need it to because one person still has something to say about that topic? With a clear outcome stated, this situation can be largely avoided.)

Meetings are complex, populated by complex human beings. Because this is true no single thing will make every meeting perfect (or even close). Having said that, the single best thing you can do to ensure more successful meetings is to state the outcomes you want to achieve before the meeting starts.

That is why desired outcomes are the Golden Key. They will unlock the door to greater productivity, less frustration, and more enjoyment from the collaboration that meetings are supposed to provide.

Why take meeting minutes when meetings last hours? Usually poor business meeting etiquette is to blame, with poor planning and facilitation squandering valuable time and energy. Use these 7 business meeting etiquette tips to brush up your meeting skills and be more productive.

1. Dinner jacket or dinner on your jacket

First decide on how formal your meeting will be. Advance warn attendees about special requirements, for example dress code, to ensure people understand what’s expected and can prepare accordingly.

2. Too many cooks ... and not enough bottle washers

There is a skill in inviting the right people to a meeting. Only invite bosses, and the work will never be done, so make sure you invite the right mix of decision makers, experts, implementers and stakeholders to enable post meeting action.

3. …. but too many cooks spoil the broth

The flip side to inviting the right mix of people is that you may end up with an overflowing meeting room. As long as you get about 80% of who you need, you’re doing well.

4. The 37 minute meeting agenda

Prepare a meeting agenda in advance and circulate this to your attendees - remember that meetings can come in all different durations, so get people’s attention by having weird duration meetings. Meetings that start and finish on time (or even early!), and achieve all objectives outlined in the agenda will be appreciated by all, and will increase your chance of a better meeting next time.

5. Empty barrels make the most noise

Good facilitation skills are important when you have people fond of their own voice. Use meeting ground-rules to help avoid speaking for the sake of speaking. Or maybe don’t invite them in the first place! How about introducing stand-up meetings? Brilliant for daily catch-up or review meetings, as conversations shorten when legs tire.

6. Stop violent agreement

And here’s another reason why this is a great idea….. and another… and another. Do you really need to waste time violently agreeing with each other? It might be fun, but get consensus and move on.

7. AOB

Let’s be blunt - Any Other Business can also mean Any Old Bull unless you keep tight hold of the halter. Ask for AOB points at the start of the meeting and only give them airtime if there is time. Check if any points have already been covered, then get the group to prioritise each AOB point and put a time limit on them.

Stick up for them. Sitting and watching your best friend get picked on or teased is definitely not going to earn you a brownie badge in best friends. If your best friend is getting seriously bullied and you're scared you'll get hurt if you get involved, then get help from a teacher or parents. If you can stick up for them without getting harmed yourself, make sure you do so. Spend time together. Hang out on the weekends or plan activities together every now and then, do some homework together, and chat during break at school. How do I find a business partner?

A partnership is like a marriage in important ways, like requiring a high level of trust and the fact that not anyone will do. And, as in marriages, divorce is common; in fact it' s more so in partnerships. Since the divorce rate is running at 53%, you should proceed carefully in taking an important business risk with less than a 50-50 statistical outlook. Unfortunately business breakups are often unpleasant and expensive. We have tracked over a hundred different businesses since 1989 and for some of our books, we turn to these people for their experience. So when we added a chapter on "Overcoming Obstacles" to Secrets of Self-Employment, we asked our business owners about their worst business experiences. Overwhelmingly, the worst experiences involved failed partnerships. So, when we turned to this same 100+ businesses about a year later when writing Teaming Up: The Small Business Guide to Collaborating, to ask them about the ways in which they collaborated and how interested they were in collaborating in the future, we were surprised to learn that 61% were actively engaged in some form of business collaboration and 70% wanted to do more in the future.

Does hope spring eternal or is there a rational way to explain this? We think both are true. First, there are compelling reasons, such as your own, for finding co-venturers. Second, there are more ways to collaborate than having a partnership, which requires a high level of intimacy, albeit business intimacy. Intimacy does not develop from a contract, however laboriously and carefully drafted.

So our advice in finding a partner is to "date first." Engage in some of the other forms of business collaboration, such as jointly bidding on projects, subcontracting with another firm or principal, engaging in cross-marketing efforts, or making mutual referrals. It's a lot easier to find someone for these more limited risks than to find a full partner.

It may be that these lesser forms of collaborating make you more profitable or they may require more time than you realize in financial gain, but since your ultimate objective is to acquire a partner, you can consider this "dating" as an investment.

While you're engaged in these less-involved forms of collaborating, observe the behavior of the company or person you're working with, listen to their "war stories," particularly about litigation or financial problems, and notice your own emotional reactions to the interactions you have. If all signs are "go," then proceed to proposing.

How do you find people or firms you can collaborate with? You may do it online in listserv groups, on message boards and via their web sites; reading what they write or is written about them in print publications pertinent to your interests. But most people are more comfortable with contacts they make either through referrals by "gatekeepers" and colleagues or through contacts they make at meetings and events. Gatekeepers are often active participants in their professional organizations so attending such functions is a good way to meet them. Since you're located in Fairfield, driving to the Bay Area or Silicon Valley may not be your favorite use of time, but these areas will provide you with the opportunity to make more contacts.

1. Don't Meet
Avoid a meeting if the same information could be covered in a memo, e-mail or brief report. One of the keys to having more effective meetings is differentiating between the need for one-way information dissemination and two-way information sharing. To disseminate information you can use a variety of other communication media, such as sending an e-mail or posting the information on your company's intranet. If you want to be certain you have delivered the right message, you can schedule a meeting to simply answer questions about the information you have sent. By remembering to ask yourself, "Is a meeting the best way to handle this?" you'll cut down on wasted meeting time and restore your group's belief that the meetings they attend are necessary.

2. Set Objectives for the Meeting
Set objectives before the meeting! Before planning the agenda for the meeting, write down a phrase or several phrases to complete the sentence: By the end of the meeting, I want the group to… Depending on the focus of your meeting, your ending to the sentence might include phrases such as: …be able to list the top three features of our newest product, …have generated three ideas for increasing our sales, …understand the way we do business with customers, …leave with an action plan, …decide on a new widget supplier, or …solve the design problem.

One benefit of setting objectives for the meeting is to help you plan the meeting. The more concrete your meeting objectives, the more focused your agenda will be. 3. Provide an Agenda Beforehand
Provide all participants with an agenda before the meeting starts. When you send the agenda, you should include the time, date and location of the meeting and any background information participants will need to know to hold an informed discussion on the meeting topic. 4. Assign Meeting Preparation
Give all participants something to prepare for the meeting, and that meeting will take on a new significance to each group member. For problem-solving meetings, have the group read the background information necessary to get down to business in the meeting. Ask each group member to think of one possible solution to the problem to get everyone thinking about the meeting topic. For example, to start a sales meeting on a positive note, have all participants recall their biggest success since the last meeting and ask one person to share his success with the group. For less formal meetings or brainstorming sessions, ask a trivia question related to the meeting topic and give the correct answer in the first few minutes of the meeting. These tips are sure-fire ways to warm up the group and direct participants' attention to the meeting objectives.

5. Assign Action Items
Don't finish any discussion in the meeting without deciding how to act on it. Listen for key comments that flag potential action items and don't let them pass by without addressing them during your meeting. Statements such as We should really…, that's a topic for a different meeting…, or I wonder if we could… are examples of comments that should trigger action items to get a task done, hold another meeting or further examine a particular idea. Assigning tasks and projects as they arise during the meeting means that your follow-through will be complete. Addressing off-topic statements during the meeting in this way also allows you to keep the meeting on track. By immediately addressing these statements with the suggestion of making an action item to examine the issue outside of the current meeting, you show meeting participants that you value their input as well as their time.

6. Examine Your Meeting Process
Assign the last few minutes of every meeting as time to review the following questions: What worked well in this meeting? What can we do to improve our next meeting? Every participant should briefly provide a point-form answer to these questions. Answers to the second question should be phrased in the form of a suggested action. For example, if a participant's answer is stated as Jim was too long-winded, ask the participant to re-phrase the comment as an action. The statement We should be more to-the-point when stating our opinions is a more constructive suggestion. Remember – don't leave the meeting without assessing what took place and making a plan to improve the next meeting!

Meeting management tends to be a set of skills often overlooked by leaders and managers. The following information is a rather "Cadillac" version of meeting management suggestions. The reader might pick which suggestions best fits the particular culture of their own organization. (Note that there may seem to be a lot of suggestions listed below for something as apparently simple as having a meeting. However, any important activity would include a long list of suggestions. The list seems to become much smaller once you master how to conduct the activity.)

Selecting Participants

· The decision about who is to attend depends on what you want to accomplish in the meeting. This may seem too obvious to state, but it's surprising how many meetings occur without the right people there.
· Don't depend on your own judgment about who should come. Ask several other people for their opinion as well.
· If possible, call each person to tell them about the meeting, it's overall purpose and why their attendance is important.
· Follow-up your call with a meeting notice, including the purpose of the meeting, where it will be held and when, the list of participants and whom to contact if they have questions.
· Send out a copy of the proposed agenda along with the meeting notice.
· Have someone designated to record important actions, assignments and due dates during the meeting. This person should ensure that this information is distributed to all participants shortly after the meeting.

Developing Agendas

· Develop the agenda together with key participants in the meeting. Think of what overall outcome you want from the meeting and what activities need to occur to reach that outcome. The agenda should be organized so that these activities are conducted during the meeting.
In the agenda, state the overall outcome that you want from the meeting
· Design the agenda so that participants get involved early by having something for them to do right away and so they come on time.
· Next to each major topic, include the type of action needed, the type of output expected (decision, vote, action assigned to someone), and time estimates for addressing each topic
· Ask participants if they'll commit to the agenda.
· Keep the agenda posted at all times.
· Don't overly design meetings; be willing to adapt the meeting agenda if members are making progress in the planning process.
· Think about how you label an event, so people come in with that mindset; it may pay to have a short dialogue around the label to develop a common mindset among attendees, particularly if they include representatives from various cultures.

Opening Meetings

· Always start on time; this respects those who showed up on time and reminds late-comers that the scheduling is serious.
· Welcome attendees and thank them for their time.
· Review the agenda at the beginning of each meeting, giving participants a chance to understand all proposed major topics, change them and accept them.
· Note that a meeting recorder if used will take minutes and provide them back to each participant shortly after the meeting.
· Model the kind of energy and participant needed by meeting participants.
· Clarify your role(s) in the meeting.

Establishing Ground Rules for Meetings

You don't need to develop new ground rules each time you have a meeting, surely. However, it pays to have a few basic ground rules that can be used for most of your meetings. These ground rules cultivate the basic ingredients needed for a successful meeting.
· Four powerful ground rules are: participate, get focus, maintain momentum and reach closure. (You may want a ground rule about confidentiality.)
· List your primary ground rules on the agenda.
· If you have new attendees who are not used to your meetings, you might review each ground rule.
· Keep the ground rules posted at all times.

Time Management

· One of the most difficult facilitation tasks is time management -- time seems to run out before tasks are completed. Therefore, the biggest challenge is keeping momentum to keep the process moving.
· You might ask attendees to help you keep track of the time.
· If the planned time on the agenda is getting out of hand, present it to the group and ask for their input as to a resolution.

Evaluations of Meeting Process

· It's amazing how often people will complain about a meeting being a complete waste of time -- but they only say so after the meeting. Get their feedback during the meeting when you can improve the meeting process right away. Evaluating a meeting only at the end of the meeting is usually too late to do anything about participants' feedback.
· Every couple of hours, conduct 5-10 minutes "satisfaction checks".
· In a round-table approach, quickly have each participant indicate how they think the meeting is going.

Evaluating the Overall Meeting

· Leave 5-10 minutes at the end of the meeting to evaluate the meeting; don't skip this portion of the meeting.
· Have each member rank the meeting from 1-5, with 5 as the highest, and have each member explain their ranking
· Have the chief executive rank the meeting last.

Closing Meetings

· Always end meetings on time and attempt to end on a positive note.
· At the end of a meeting, review actions and assignments, and set the time for the next meeting and ask each person if they can make it or not (to get their commitment)
· Clarify that meeting minutes and/or actions will be reported back to members in at most a week (this helps to keep momentum going).
