I know, they’re totally engrossed in the webinar, hanging on the presenter’s every word, jotting down notes and typing in questions. Or maybe they’re more like the @CMEGuy (and me): This is your brain 30 minutes into a 60-minute webinar.

But seriously, what can we do to keep people’s attention throughout an entire webinar? I know we need to break up the information into small chunks, provide some multimedia, engage in ongoing chat and/or Q&A, but even that doesn’t always keep them engaged. Oh yeah, maybe we just need totally compelling content?

Inspiration for your next save-the-date promotion

These invitations are for weddings, not conferences, but I bet you can find some inspiration among the various creative-if-geeky ways some couples chose to make their big announcements (plus they’re just all kinds of fun to look at). Here’s one I particularly liked, though it could get expensive: The View Master invitation.

They may number less than 10 percent of the population, but do you ever think about accommodating the needs of the left-handed people at your conference? It hadn’t crossed my mind until I ran across BuzzFeed’s list of the 18 worst things for left-handed people. At the top of the list are spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, and ballpoint pens—ubiquitous giveaways at most of the conferences I’ve attended. And what about the rounds used for most meals at conferences? There’s no corner to sit at to keep from bonking elbows with righties.

The least you could do would be to hand out some of these SmudgeGuard Tablet Gloves, right?

It just gets repurposed! I just adore this idea, along with many of the others you’ll see if you click through the link.

Is there some old, tired piece of your meeting that you could creatively repurpose to bring a surprising little jolt of joy to your attendees? I bet there is.

I’ve done some weird things to keep myself amused on long flights, but this one never occurred to me: A woman named Nina Katchadourian ducked into the lav on a flight last year and for some reason was inspired to recreate 15th century Flemish portraits in airplane bathrooms using toilet tissue, seat-covers, and paper towels for costumes/props. The funny thing is that they’re pretty good. A couple examples from her Web site:

Could some variation on this be a teambuilding activity? Naw…

This typing game is outrageously addictive, at least to those of us who are pretty quick on the keyboard—then again, who wouldn’t enjoy shooting down words letter by letter? I wonder if there’s some way to incorporate this concept when I’m writing an article…
