Bathrooms are designed to deal with water, but that doesn’t mean they’re completely immune to it, and so damp can creep in even if you’re on top of cleaning, and once it does, it tends to leave a long trace which is rather inconvenient. You’ll usually see it appear around the corners of ceilings, and that includes behind sinks or around the bath or shower. Your paint may also start to bubble or peel, and there might be a musty smell that stays even when you ventilate the space. You’ll notice it, it’s pretty horrible.

The ventilation system is often to blame if you notice this growing. You can’t stop the moisture in a bathroom for obvious reasons, so it has to be pulled out. An extractor fan that’s not quite strong enough, or one that doesn’t run long enough after showers, won’t keep moisture moving and that can build up in mold as you may expect. Upgrading the fan is usually a relatively quick fix, especially now that quieter, energy-efficient models are easy to install without a full rewiring job.

If the damp patches are more focused, resealing those areas might be enough. Shower trays and bathtubs shift ever so slightly over time, which can create tiny gaps between fixtures and tiles and as such may be leaving little drips and the damp you’ve been suffering from. A new bead of sealant might be all that’s needed to stop the spread in this cases.

Slippy Floors

Tile floors in bathrooms are quite common, but they don’t always play nicely with moisture, and the last thing you want as a reward for keeping hygienic is a twisted ankle. That’s not exactly fun. As such, even with bath mats down, it only takes a little puddle to turn the entire floor into a slip hazard. Children or elderly relatives who may be more vulnerable can find a real danger here.

As such, the simplest approach is to review the type of tiles that were used. For example, ceramics might look nice but aren’t always suitable for a space that gets wet regularly, and that’s putting it lightly. Nowadays, you can easily install anti-slip coatings that can be applied over existing tiles, giving the surface a more matte texture that adds grip without needing a full floor replacement if you’d prefer to keep the same look. It’s a good place to start.

A Lack Of Privacy

A bathroom should feel like a completely private space, especially if it’s on the ground floor where people could walk past, or if other houses have windows or sight lines into the room. If blinds feel flimsy or don’t fully cover the window, or if the door doesn’t quite latch properly, it can make using the room feel strangely exposed.

Frosted window film is usually a good fix for privacy issues, especially for bathrooms that has enough light already. It’s easy to apply and can fit on most windows, not to mention being cheap to replace, and doesn’t block out all the natural light. You can go for frosted glass as well, but this is a little more expensive when film can achieve the same effect, so it’s up to you.

Of course, you need privacy from the internal house too, so a better lock or door latch might help more than you’d think, especially on older doors where the frame has shifted a little over time and there’s a gap visible.

If the layout itself is the problem, such as a toilet that can be seen from a hallway when the door opens, then implementing a well-placed screen or even a half-wall addition could be something to think about. Great ventilation also helps for obvious reasons, especially if the extraction fan turns on and you can ensure the room is constantly cycling fresh air in or pulling out stale air and steam.

Poor Lighting

Good bathroom lighting is a little trickier than just choosing bulbs that look nice. A single ceiling fixture might not be enough, particularly in bathrooms with no natural light. Harsh overhead lights can also cast shadows in all the wrong places, which isn’t ideal for grooming tasks like shaving or makeup.

Wall-mounted lights near mirrors can make a big difference. They’re usually easy to retrofit and can be wired into the same circuit without too much effort. If that’s not on the cards, even swapping to softer LED bulbs with a better colour temperature can make the space feel more comfortable.

For bathrooms used in the middle of the night, it’s also worth thinking about motion-sensitive lights or dimmable options. These allow softer lighting without waking the whole household, and many can be installed with minimal fuss.

Poor Drainage

Standing water in a shower tray or bath that takes forever to empty is a good sign that you have bad drainage and something isn’t flowing as it should. It might be hair buildup, sure, but sometimes the gradient of the pipes or the design of the waste system just doesn’t encourage proper drainage and can build up over time. Mt. Rushmore - Summer 2021

We have been wanting to go and see Mr. Rushmore and we finally get to see it last summer. It's amazing to see it in picture but it is more awesome to see it with your own ice at the actual place. I mean, whoever thought of carving these president's face in there was brilliant. I am glad that we went there when our children are bigger because they get to appreciate it for what it is, for it's meaning.

What I love is the representation of each state through the flag display at the entrance.

The path which led Sculptor John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum to Mount Rushmore began on a homestead near Bear Lake, Idaho, where he was born in March of 1867. His father, James Borglum, had immigrated to this country from Denmark a few years earlier. Shortly after Gutzon's birth his family moved to Utah. By the time Borglum was seven they were living in Fremont, Nebraska.

It was a lot of walking but I enjoyed everything.

Madison Wisconsin

When we had our road trip to South Dakota in 2022, we had to stop for a night in Madison Wisconsin to rest and sleep. We got there a little early so we had time to check out some parks and we also drive by at the capitol. An old lady offered to take our photo.

It was a short stay in Madison but we explored quite a few beautiful places in such a short period of time.

we visited two beautiful parks before we went to see the capitol. We didn't get to go inside because it was late and we couldn't find a parking so the kids and I jumped down from the car while hubby drove around trying to find a spot. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to find one so when he came back we just ride back and left.

The Olin-Turville Park was the first one we visited.

This is the area where we stayed overnight.

Glad we were able to walk around, it was a great for all of us to stretch out our legs.

The Brittingham Park was beautiful too, a little crowded but we had a great time exploring.

Madison is a beautiful place. If we ever go back, I would love to stay there and do stuff.

We got to see a little bit of Wisconsin when we had our family road trip last year. We had to stop since driving to South Dakota was super long so we stayed at a hotel in Madison and get to explore the city a little bit.

Entering the city of Madison was exciting for me, we have never been to this part of the US so it gave us the chance to see a glimpse of it.

My favorite part about going on a roadtrip is seeing the farm land, it's relaxing to me. I know it isn't fair to my husband be3cause he does all the driving but I am grateful for the opportunity.

It's fascinating to me to see farms leading to a big city. I am glad that farming is still alive in the US. I have huge respect for farmers. My father was a farmer and I grew up in a farmer. The work farmers do is hard day in and day out. I think that farmers deserve more appreciation from us, they do so much for I feel like less money that they deserve.

Back home, farmers doesn't really have this kind of watering system. From my experience, my father would make a canal from the river to lead the water to our ricefield. Over here, farmers have it easier since they have all these heavy and advanced equipment to use in the farm. It's so neat to see, it makes me think of how much it would have been easier for my dad if we had these things.

Anyway, every time we pass through farmland, I always wish that we own one. I know it's a lot of work but I kind of miss the lifestyle that we had growing up. It's funny coz when I was younger, I didn't like it at all (lol) but now I want to experience it again.

Madison Wisconsin is beautiful. I wish we could have explored more but maybe there will be next time.

As we leave the little town of River Grove, we continue our trip passing through the metropolitan area in Chicago.

Airplane on flight, beautiful skies, I can't help but to take pictures of them.

I actually enjoyed driving through Chicago. I love how they have an abundance of street lights.

We've never really explore Chicago for vacation in the past so I can't say much about the place but judging from what I've seen during our drive, it looks like a nice place. Better than what I have imagined it to be based from the news I've seen.

Looks like Chicago has some major businesses going.

They were getting ready for the 4th of July so there's men putting every bridge.

I am sure Chicago is a lot more beautiful when you explore the whole place. As they are famously known as the Midwest's hub, I would like to see their well-known magnificent skyline. It would be great to explore the kilometers of sandy beaches and beautiful parks.

As I mentioned in my previous post , we took a little detour in Illinois so we can eat lunch.

We drove around to find Raising Cane before we continue with our journey.

With the violent crimes being shown on the news, my son was afraid of us stopping there but River Grove Illinois looks safe so we continued driving around until we found the place we were looking for.

I've never heard of Triton College but we passed by it on our way back to the Chicago area after we ate.

According to an article I read online, River Grove actually has a lower crime rate, 15% lower than the overall crime rate in Illinois.

River Gorge is a scenic small town nestled along the banks of the Des Plaines River. This place is only a few miles away from the Chicago metropolitan area.

It was a quaint little town and I'm glad we drove around there as it changed my son's perception about Illinois.

Road trip to South Dakota, Day One

Doing family road trips is fun although it's hard for someone who's doing all the driving (Thanks Hon). He drove 10 hours on our first day though Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and then we stopped for the night in Madison, Wisconsin.

It's always a treat to me when we drive where there's farming scenery.

The three states that we passed by are pretty have those farming scenery which I love.

There's a charm about farms that attracts me, maybe because I grew up in a farm and I kind of miss that now that I am older. Yeah, I wasn't fond of living in a farm when I was younger, I always wanted to explore but now that I am older, I'd like to live in a FARM, again lol.

Farmers here in the US has it easier because they have machineries that does things like watering system, big machineries for plowing the field, planting, harvesting, and lifting heavy stuff. The farm where I grew up from, we do all the work manually and to this day, a lot of farmers there still do manual labors. Farmers in the Philippines can't afford to buy machineries to use in the farm.

The good thing about it is that, a lot of people still know how to grow plants and still willing to do manual farm jobs.

I remember when I was about 7 years old, my dad was already teaching us how to do things in the farm and that knowhow and skills still stuck in me so if I ever decide to live in a farm, I would survive for sure as long as I am strong enough to do manual labors.

We noticed that Indiana most have a lot of corn fields and soy beans in their fields. According to an article that I read, their valuable crops includes Corn, Soybeans, Hay & haylage, wheat, melons, pumpkins and mint.

Our daughter had to take her driver's test at the DMV in Moundsville during the pandemic era. She had to make an appointment before she could take it. On the day before the test, we went there just so she could practice on parallel parking.

While my husband was with her as she practiced, my son and I spent our time at the kiosk.

As much as he doesn't like to be photographed, he didn't have a choice. I had the camera with me and just clicked as he moved lol.

I'll take whatever I can get as he is transitioning into "Don't take a picture/don't post" phase of his teen hood. I really miss the times when they would literally asked me to take pictures of them, now it's impossible! But anyway, we didn't go with my husband and daughter the next day but she passed and has been driving since.
