Actress GUMI's first TV Anime Short - Koi Suru Dessan Ningyou

In less than two hours, at 00:30 JST, Episode 01 of GUMI's TV debut series, Koi Suru Dessan Ningyou will air on NHK's E-TV, Aoyama 1SEG Kaihatsu!

To clarify: it's not actually on TV -- it's a web-televised anime short; and GUMI's not actually acting of course, though she does provide the voice for the song the short is based on, as well as playing the part of the actual Main Character's (the Drawing Doll) object of affection. It's not even a series yet, really -- it's the pilot/pitch for a series and will be broken down into four web-episodes that we can watch on NHK's E-TV website.

However, if it gets enough votes to win against the other five pilot/pitched programs, it WILL become a regular show that is included in NHK's roster, providing us with sasakure.UK music sang by an animated GUMI on TV.

If you're a fan of GUMI, please watch the pilot and then vote for it. Voting will open during the program, which will be on 00:30 - 00:55 JST. There is a countdown at NHK's Aoyama 1SEG Kaihatsu website if anyone's worried that they'll miss out.

Animator Masanori Okamoto is producing, filming, and writing the script for the adaptation of sasakure.UK's song. Popular masked dancer Hitori de Dekiru Mon is acting as the human version of the doll. GUMI plays the girl that the doll is in love with. sasakure.UK has composed enough songs to use as themes for four episodes. sasakure.UK received assistance from Okamoto in composing the songs.

The story revolves around a drawing mannequin who is used by a girl every single day to help her draw. The doll falls in love with her, and one day suddenly gains the power to move.

GUMI, the Vocaloid, will be playing the human character, while Hitori de Dekiru Mon, a human, will be playing the inanimate drawing doll character. How awesome is that?

The short will be animated using the Pixilation technique and you can view an example of Okamoto's work in the ANN article.

It's three weeks to the celebration of GUMI's release (officially June 25/26) and Internet Co. LTD is releasing a song compilation album to celebrate the occasion! They've got a lot of things planned as well so watch out for further news about GUMI's birthday celebration this year.

The video below showcases the line-up for this album and it will be sold for ￥1,800 (tax included) and include songs from a lesser-known variety of producers, so it's really interesting to see Internet giving more producers the spotlight. 01:02 - You can create up to 16 vocal parts with the Vocaloid 3 editor. Notes and lyrics are input using a key editor.

01:16 - When you input lyrics, they are automatically converted into phonetic symbols.

01:25 - Megpoid_English, "Far away...."

01:30 - These phonetic symbols can then be edited.

01:39 - Megpoid_English, "Far away...."

01:43 - The Vocaloid 3 editor includes a variety of parameters that are used to add expression to vocals. Note property allows you to set vibrato.

05:00 - Gender factor allows you to change a voice's formal structure. This parameter allows the singer's characteristics to be widely altered. A high value will result in a deep, masculine voice and the lower the value, the more feminine the vocal will sound. By adjusting this setting, you can modify the voice to sound like an anime character, or the high-pitched cry of an animal.

05:54 - In addition to the above parameters, you can also control other elements such as portamento timing and pitch-bend.

06:02 - The Vocaloid editor can only create 16-part vocal parts. Please complete your songs by exporting each vocal part as a .wav file and using DAW software to process additional effects and other production elements.

06:20 - By using Vocaloid 3 Megpoid, you can obtain vocal synthesis that a tuner has (unclear) on a PC, allowing you to create finished vocal parts, chorus parts and demo vocals like never before.

GUMI's facebook page just shared this video, 【Megpoid English】 Introduction which is very helpful for those new to using the Vocaloid engine or even those who learned through trial and error and may not be familiar with the terms.

Since it says "Introduction", I'm assuming they'll be uploading other videos in order to help newbies become familiar with both the engine and the voice. And since CEO Noboru Murakami has uploaded videos of himself discussing Vocaloids and tuning before, maybe they might upload a video that will give short-cuts and fix-its for some of Megpoid English's more noticeable problems.

Remember that Megpoid English will be released on February 28! Preorders are available over at the Vocaloid Store, or if you'd rather try Amazon JP, here are the relevant links: voicebank only and the V3+voicebank bundle.

Just remember that software can't be shipped overseas, so if you live outside Japan, remember to use a deputy service for that. It's a more roundabout way of purchasing stuff, but it also tends to be less hassle than ebay or alternatives.

Lastly, the video, while in English, is voiced by a speaker with a noticeable Japanese accent. If you're having a hard time understanding it, you can go here for an unofficial transcription of the video.

GUMI scaled figure from Kotobukiya! They're well known for their quality so I'm looking forward to it. I hope they update with the colored version soon! And I'll be posting about their preorder dates when it's available too.

A little meh about the bangs but it's the way it is in the original illustration so it's actually more true to form. That base is lovely too, and from this close-up, looks like the eyes will shine befitting a sci-fi inspired teen idol.

Taken a few hours earlier. I just thought it was interesting how varied the TOP 5 was. There's the MAYU&GUMI duet, Yuzuki Yukari on 2, then IA, Miku and Rin. There's a distinct lack of male Voicebanks there, but I'm always happy when unpopular Vocaloids are ranking. So, despite being a GUMI-centric blog, go Yukari!

Megpoid English Trial Version Download

A NAMM (previously, National Association of Music Merchants) attendee has reported that YAMAHA's Vocaloid 3 booth were distributing this flyer. In case the image doesn't load, it says there's going to be a trial version of Megpoid English available for download from January 28th to February 14th over at Internet's site: http://www.ssw.co.jp/megpoid-trial

The page currently contains nothing, but considering the date, we'll only need to wait 2 more days before it goes live.

YAMAHA's presence at NAMM is part of their Trans-Pacific Project which aims to bridge the Japanese Vocaloid creative fandom with the English-speaking one. They have also attended CES 2013 and showcased Megpoid English, Akikoloid-chan, and AHSoftware's Kaai Yuki.

2013 Official GUMI Calendar

To add to the slowly growing pile of GUMI merchandise, INTERNET Co. LTD is releasing an official calendar that exclusively features GUMI for the year 2013 this December.

The calendar will showcase about 8 artworks from a variety of artists and will contain a total of 16 pages. The calendar is A3 in size and saddle stitched, but the shipping will be in an A2 box so remember to figure that into the equation if ever you do want it delivered to you. The calendar will feature the cover artwork, one each for every two months of 2013, and one for January-February for 2014. It will be published by Media Plus and will cost ¥ 2,000 (¥ 2,100 tax included).
