Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future is a 1985 cyberpunk television movie created by Chrysalis Visual Programming Ltd. for Channel 4 in the UK to provide a back story for Max Headroom, a computer generated TV host. A British produced, yet American broadcast, television series, Max Headroom, was later developed from the original film.

Max Headroom was  about an accidentally-created, computer-generated being named “Max Headroom” who lived inside a television network’s computer system.  Max, as he was known, was forever randomly popping up in each of the televised episodes with pearls of wit and wisdom, delivered in his trademark computer-to-blame stutter, often aggravating friends and foes alike.  Still, Max was a generally likeable creation once viewers got to know him.

Max Headroom the character was “born” when an actual news reporter named Edison Carter – ace investigative, mini-cam-toting reporter for Network 23 – had a near-death encounter in pursuit of a story.  On a motorcycle, Carter was racing into a parking garage on the trail of some hot information when he smashed through, and was knocked out by, an automated entrance gate emblazoned with the warning phrase “maximum headroom.”  That was the last phrase the erstwhile reporter recorded in his brain.

The design

CD Projekt Red studio head Adam Badowski explains what the trailer is about:

The teaser shows how the Psycho Squad might acquire a new member. The Psycho Squad specializes in combating “psychos” – individuals who overuse implants and substances that boost or otherwise alter the human body. There comes a point when they overdose on these innovations, and their bodies start to rebel against their biological body parts as well as against all things organic around them. Simply put, they start killing people, who they now derisively call “meatbags.”

When a psycho goes on the rampage, strange things can happen. There’s going to be a lot of carnage, so the psycho might be taken down by regular police, but they’re not always able to get the job done. When things spin out of control, they call in MAX-TAC (Maximum Force Tactical Division), popularly called the ‘Psycho Squad’. And these guys are exceptional; these guys are crack troops. The fact that they’re proud of that name tells you a bit about their mindset. They wear a badge with their official emblem on their right sleeve, but their left is reserved for their unofficial Psycho Squad emblem. It’s primitively made and the image itself is on the crude side of things. It’s not unlike a badge special force operators might make and wear to distinguish themselves from the ranks of grunts in any theater of war.

Leaving aside my concerns about the convenience of a Neuromancer movie, —you know, we Neuromancer lovers don’t want something that ruins our feelings about such an astounding book—, and given that this movie could finally be done, this poster has made my synapses to fire. I’m a Sci-Fi junkie and I’ll be anxious to watch the movie once it debuts. I guess that Vincenzo Natali is struggling to make a decent adaptation. This is something Natali said in an interview by Bleeding Cool:

[Case] enters what was coined the ‘Matrix’ but what was actually blatantly lifted by the Wachowski Brothers, so I’m calling it something else, but essentially he goes into this other alternative universe which a kind of Platonic universe, where everything is pure and clean and beautiful. So that would be very much a digital construct in the film.

I hope “clean and beautiful” doesn’t mean it will look like “I, Robot”.
