June kicks off the summer, so it’s always been one of my favorite months. BBQs, swimming, barefoot, summer vacation – what more could you ask for in any one month? Although June is well-known for Father’s Day (hopefully you’ve already bought your presents for Dad), there are tons of other unheard-of holidays just waiting for you to celebrate. Here are some of June’s fun but wacky holidays:

June 1

• Heimlich Maneuver Day – I hope you don’t actually have to perform the Heimlich Maneuver today, but it’s a great day to review how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver.
• National Go Barefoot Day – Kick off those shoes and let your feet feel the grass. Extra points if you play tag barefoot!
• Flip a Coin Day – Having a hard time making decisions today? Let your favorite coin decide for you. Great way to settle kids’ arguments, as well!

June 2

• Leave the Office Early Day – now, who doesn’t like a day like that? Be sure to remind your boss that relaxtion and rest can improve morale and productivity!
• National Running Day – a great thing to do if you’ve left the office early!
• National Rocky Road Ice Cream Day – Stop by your favorite ice cream shop, buy your favorite brand from the grocer, or make your own using this yummy Rocky Road Ice Cream recipe.

June 3

• Old Maid’s Day – Take your favorite maiden aunt out for lunch, or send her flowers. Play the classic card game with your kids – here are the rules for Old Maid card game.
• Hug Your Cat Day – if you can catch it, that is. If you don’t have a cat, visit some at your local humane society. Or buy a gift for your favorite cat lover.
• National Trails Day – the perfect day for a hike!

June 5

• Hot Air Balloon Day – you can book a hot air balloon ride at Cloud9 Living.
• National Gingerbread Day – I always associate gingerbread with Christmas, but the official day is June. Go figure!
• National Cancer Survivors Day – always the first Sunday of June. Find out more about this day of celebration, including how you can host your own event at NCSDF.org.

June 6

• National Yo-Yo Day – return to childhood with this classic toy. Remember how to do your favorite tricks? Here’s a link to some easy yo yo tricks.
• Drive-in Movie Day – a classic summertime experience that’s disappearing. Here’s a site that lists local drive-in theatres.

June 7

• National Chocolate Ice Cream Day – it’s fitting that June is host to several ice cream days. Here’s a scrumptious recipe for Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream – just the pictures alone are worth a visit!
• Daniel Boone Day – wear a coonskin cap or take a hike in honor of the day Daniel Boone first say Kentucky on June 7, 1769.

June 8

• Best Friends Day – let your best friend know how important they are. Send a sentimental gift or share an incredible experience with your closest friend.
• Upsy Daisy Day – according to the founders, today is a day for everyone to get up gloriously, gratefully, and gleefully. Didn’t happen? Maybe you should go back to bed and try again!

June 9

• Donald Duck Day – everyone’s favorite duck debuted on June 9, 1934.
• National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie day – I’ve actually never had a rhubarb pie, strawberry or otherwise. So this year I want to test out this Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler recipe – that way I won’t have to fool with making a pie crust!

• National Iced Tea Day – I grew up in the South, so I must have drunk lakes of iced tea! I don’t have a recipe for standard iced tea, but here are several unique iced tea recipes. Don’t forget to sit on your front porch while sipping your iced tea!
• Mourn for Your Money Day – Tax withholding became a law in 1943, so today we mourn for all those withheld dollars. Americangreetings.com has a great ecard just for Mourn for Your Money day!

• Corn on the Cob Day – As American as apple pie! Although corn on the cob is delicious boiled or microwaved, nothing beats it on the grill. Here’s how to grill corn on the cob.
• National Croquet Day – the perfect sport to enjoy while you’re waiting for your corn on the cob to cook (don’t you love it when 2 holidays go together so well?). Need a croquet set? Overstock.com has one for just over $50.

June 12

• Red Rose Day – the traditional symbol of love, fidelity, and romance. Save 10% on Red Roses at FTD.com.
• International Cachaca Day – Cachaca is Brazilian rum, so make your favorite rum-based drink and enjoy your evening!

• Queen’s Offical Birthday – the Queen’s REAL birthday is April 26, 1926. But in England and other Commonwealth countries, they officially honor her today with a Trooping of the Colour parade.
• National Juggling Day – Today’s the day to try your hand (or hands, to be precise) at the art of juggling. Need a little help? Watch this video about how to juggle.

• Flag Day – honors the official adoption of the flag on June 14, 1777. So fly your flag proudly today!
• Pop Goes the Weasel Day – if you’ve forgotten the words, here they are.

• Go Fishing Day – take your friends or family to your favorite fishing hole. Good luck!

• Father’s Day – Have a wonderful day celebrating with your family!
• National Martini Day – I don’t think it’s a coincidence that National Martini Day coincides with Father’s Day! Combine the two and give Dad a Martini gift for Father’s Day!

• International Sushi Day – cold sushi is a perfect meal on a hot summer day!
• Ride to Work Day (Motorcycles) – with the price of gas these days, every day should be ride your motorcycle to work day!
• Ice Cream Soda Day – my Mom always talked about ordering ice cream sodas at her drugstore soda fountain when she was little. If you’re lucky enough to live near an old-time drugstore, be sure to enjoy an ice cream soda today! Otherwise, check out this traditional ice cream soda recipe.

• Summer Solstice – It’s OFFICIALLY the first day of summer, and the longest day of the year!

June 22

• Chocolate Eclair Day – who knew June had so many great food holidays? Chocolate eclairs are so yummy, but they are pretty time consuming to make. If you have an extra 4 hours or so, try Food Network’s chocolate eclair recipe – it’s sure to be a winner!
• Stupid Guy Thing Day – today every man has an excuse for doing all those bizarre things that women just don’t understand.
• National Onion Rings Day – obviously, today is not a day for dieters! In Atlanta, The Varsity is known for their onion rings. Today would be a great day for you to find the best onion rings in your home town.

June 23

• National Pecan Sandy Day – Naturally, I’ve found a fantastic pecan sandie recipe for you to try if you’re in the mood for baking. No word as to whether it’s actually spelled sandy or sandie.
• Public Service Day – United Nations has declared today a day of recognition for our civil servants and all that they provide to our community. So be sure to thank your mail carrier, government worker, teacher, and other civil servants.

June 24

• Take Your Dog to Work Today – followed immediately by “settle the lawsuits brought by the victims of dogbites” Day.
• Swim a Lap Day – If you’ve celebrated ice cream day, onion ring day, chocolate eclair day and all those other foodie June holidays, you may want to consider swimming more than just 1 lap!

June 25

• Great American Backyard Campout – Time to pitch the tent in the backyard. At least this way you’ll be close to indoor plumbing! Find out more about how you can raise money for the National Wildlife Federation by participating in the Great American Backyard Campout.
• National Catfish Day – catch them yourself, cook them at home, or go to your favorite restaurant.

June 26

• National Chocolate Pudding Day – Bill Crosby must be so happy! I love the Jello cook-n-serve pudding (even the sugar-free is great!), but if you’re looking for something a bit more decadent, try this Thick and Rich Chocolate Pudding Recipe.
• America’s Kids Day – althought I would argue that every day is kids day (and my kids would argue against it). This day is actually set aside to teach our kids about America’s history. Crayola has a page with coloring sheets, ecards, and crafts that promise to make this a fun-filled day.

June 27

• Sunglasses Day – the perfect day to treat yourself to a new pair!
• National Orange Blossom Day – the state flower of Florida, the orange blossom also stars in a variety of food and drinks. Why not try Drinkmixer’s easy Orange Blossom drink or this refreshing Melon-Orange Blossom gelato.

June 28

• Paul Bunyan Day – it’s a giant of a day! If you don’t have a blue ox, and aren’t up to logging (or don’t have the proper permits to cut down trees), maybe you could celebrate by buying a new pair of shoes. After all, legend has it that Paul Bunyan’s footprints created Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes.
• National Tapioca Day – We’re all familiar with the usual tapioca pudding, but here’s something a bit more exotic to try: Chilled Tapioca Pearls with Sweet Coconut and Melon. Just the name sounds so refreshing!

June 29

• Waffle Iron Day – forgo the toaster waffles today! It’s time to break out the real waffle iron and make some from-scratch treats. Try this healthy recipe for Banana Nut Waffles.
• National Almond Buttercrunch – any day that involves almonds and chocolate has to be worth celebrating! Never heard of buttercrunch? According to this article, our hard toffee (think Almond Roca) IS buttercrunch.

June 30

• National Bomb Pop Day – flag down the ice cream truck and enjoy the traditional summertime treat! I’m pretty sure this day is meant to celebrate the frozen popsicle treats, but why not take it a step further, and make a refreshing Bomb Pop Cocktail.
• Meteor Watch Day – look to the skies tonight (while sipping your Bomb Pop Cocktail – remember, it’s fine to combine two celebrations!) Be sure to make a wish if you see a shooting star!
