This lunch provided a great time for mentoring pairs to catch up and connect with each other and also gave them the opportunity to meet other people involved in mentoring across campus.

During the relaxed but lively discussion, we asked folks to write down what they appreciate most about their mentor or mentee. Here are some examples of what people said:

“I like that if I have a question, I can ask her. She makes me feel very welcome.”

“My mentor is willing to meet with me outside of his office hours because I have class during his office hours. He also gives me good advice relating to courses and my major.”

“He is positive, insightful, and willing to meet with me, even though he is very, very busy. He helps me attain my goals.”

“[My mentee] is engaged and listens to our conversations. I am doing what I can to help [him] prepare for the ‘real world.’”

My mentee “is always on time for meetings and never left me waiting. [She] is always appreciative of all I have to offer.”

“I must say that I love my mentor! [She] has gone above and beyond what a mentor is expected to do. She has allowed me to experience new things, becoming a more opportunistic person… not to mention, she taught me study habits which improved my test scores. Thanks!”

“I appreciate that my mentor is so readily available. His office is at Byerly Hall, and I can stop in to see him whenever I am on campus. He often emails to check on me and often asks if he can do anything to help out. I like that he is easy-going and approachable. He is like my on-campus ‘father.’”

“I really appreciate how when we do meet, it doesn’t feel like it’s mandatory. And any time I need to talk to her or have a question, she is open for me when I need her. And it helps out a lot that we are friends because when we see each other, when it’s not our meeting time, we still just talk for about an hour. So I appreciate how I can talk to her whenever!”

Keep a Journal...

**Keep a Journal**

Keeping a journal or log is one way to add depth to your learning.
Set aside time regularly to write about your experiences. Check out the list of books currently on the shelves in our office in Chester House.

Also, below we share two interesting reads that we came across recently and hope to add to our library soon. If you're interested in reading either of these, email us, and we'll order them for you to borrow from the MMAP library ASAP...

The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything
by Ken Robinson, Ph.D.

From one of the world’s leading thinkers and speakers on creativity and innovation, a breakthrough book about talent, passion, and achievement.

The element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the element, they feel most themselves and most inspired and achieve at their highest levels. The Element draws on the stories of a wide range of people, from ex-Beatle Paul McCartney to Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons; from Meg Ryan to Gillian Lynne, who choreographed the Broadway productions of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera; and from writer Arianna Huffington to renowned physicist Richard Feynman and others, including business leaders and athletes. It explores the components of this new paradigm: The diversity of intelligence, the power of imagination and creativity, and the importance of commitment to our own capabilities.

With a wry sense of humor, Ken Robinson looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the element and those that stifle that possibility. He shows that age and occupation are no barrier, and that once we have found our path we can help others to do so as well.

Monday Morning Mentoring: Ten Lessons to Guide You Up the Ladder
by David Cotrell

Everyone who wants a fulfilling career needs a mentor -- someone who has seen it all before, someone who can share hard-won experiences and teach valuable lessons.

In this expanded and enhanced version of his best-selling book, Monday Morning Leadership, David Cottrell packs all of the wisdom of his wide-ranging business experience into this inspirational story. Cottrell introduces us to Jeff, a successful corporate manager who has hit a major wall. Jeff has been leading his team, quarter after quarter, to great sales and better profits for several years -- until now. The tricks that used to work wonders have lost their magic; Jeff is in a slump and is at a loss to find his way out of it.

Overworked, stressed, and feeling that his personal and professional lives are at risk, Jeff reaches out to the father of a college buddy, a retired and tremendously accomplished former executive named Tony. Tony and Jeff agree to meet every Monday for ten weeks to work through Jeff's problems and get his career back on track.

If you would like to recommend a book that we should consider adding to the library, let us know by leaving a comment here or emailing us.

Mentoring is Big at Millersville this Fall

Millersville students have been busy getting excited about mentoring this fall semester!

Training Workshops
Ally and Stacy provided mentoring training for students and mentors in the S-STEM Program, the Color of Teaching Program, and PALM.
