The last phase of development undergoes undeterred as a fleet of test prototypes has been recently spotted on the outskirts of Stuttgart. The black camouflage has come off, so more details of the massive SUV are now becoming visible, like the headlights, beefy grille and bumpers and the elegantly designed LED tail lamps. Most probably, given the mud that's accumulated on the wheels and sides of the body, the snagged GLs were returning to the R&D Centre from a series of offroad trials custom-made to evaluate the potential skills of this new SUV generation.

Check out more spy shots after the jump!

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. The car, owned by the McCaw family, will form the centrepiece of an extensive collection of Mercedes-Benz racing and production cars being exhibited on the 18th fairway of the Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach.

See and read more on this topic >> HERE

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. Subject to agreement by the board of management at EvoBus GmbH, the long-standing Daimler Manager will take over the management of Marketing, Sales & Aftersales on 1 April 2012. “In Till Oberwörder, we’ve gained a real sales professional for the bus market who has many years of experience in the commercial vehicles segment”, states Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses.

After having studied business administration, Till Oberwörder began his career in 1998 at Daimler in Stuttgart. Since then, he has carried out a variety of leadership functions in the Sales department of the company, both within Germany and abroad. In the Trucks division, he was responsible for Sales Management and Market Management in Central and Eastern Europe, before taking over the management of Mercedes-Benz Ceská in the Czech Republic in 2006. In February 2011, Till Oberwörder returned to Stuttgart and has since been in charge of Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales and Market Management.

As Head of Marketing, Sales & Aftersales, Till Oberwörder succeeds Angela Titzrath-Grimm (45), who left Daimler in January 2012 to join the Board of Management at Deutsche Post/DHL.

Credits: Daimler AG

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. Catering company Gate Gourmet has been serving air travellers at Sweden's largest airport with meals, snacks, drinks and other in-flight provisions for almost three years now, all delivered using 10 Mercedes-Benz Econic vehicles. In addition, Lufthansa subsidiary LSG recently signed a contract for no less than 39 vehicles.

Market leader in the catering sector

Lufthansa is the parent company of LSG Sky Chefs, headquartered in Neu-Isenburg, close to Frankfurt Airport. LSG was established in 1966, and in 1993 acquired a 25 percent stake in Sky Chefs, the caterers to American Airlines established back in 1942. In 1995, the Lufthansa subsidiary acquired the remaining shares in the company, whose name since that time has also included the designation "Sky Chefs". The 133 companies belonging to the LSG Sky Chefs Group, which has 195 operations in 50 countries, claim to serve more than 300 airlines worldwide. Currently, around 460 million meals are produced each year. In 2010 the company had a staff of almost 28,500 employees.

Gate Gourmet, meanwhile, belongs to Gategroup Holding AG, headquartered in Zürich Kloten. Gategroup has its roots in the airline company Swissair, established in 1931. The company operates more than 130 sites in 35 countries, staffed by around 22,000 employees.

Scissor lift platforms meet catering requirements

As is the case for air freight deliveries, the airline catering sector also makes use of special vehicles fitted with scissor lift platforms enabling containers to be lifted up to a height of 5.70 metres, level with aircraft loading compartments.

Preparing an aircraft for take-off – whether an A 320, A 380, or a Boeing 757, or even smaller aircraft too – calls for a lot of work at the terminal. Loading luggage, refuelling, cleaning, and catering are all steps which need to be dealt with not only as quickly as possible, but also as punctually as possible - down to the second. Things can sometimes get a bit cramped in the regular, smaller catering vehicles, and since 2008 Gate Gourmet has therefore been making use of ten high-volume Mercedes-Benz Econic vehicles, complete with scissor lift platforms, at Arlanda Airport in Sweden's capital. From the wide-bodied A 380 down to the small MD 80, the vehicles are able to serve all aircraft types without the need to resort to any other vehicle.

This on its own is a big advantage. The unique low-floor design of the specialist vehicle from Wörth continues to impress - again and again. "It's easy to drive, almost like a car, and the low cab entry is really convenient", according to the drivers. The Econic's large panoramic windscreen helps to ensure optimum visibility, while the standard automatic transmission makes precise manoeuvring possible. Even when things get so tight around the aircraft that it becomes difficult to get out of a vehicle, with its folding co-driver door opening at the touch of a button, the Econic has a clear advantage. This is precisely why it has already been in great demand for a number of years now, particularly in the municipal waste disposal sector - from Paris to Prague, and from Valencia to Athens.

The Econic is tailor-made for catering services

The Mercedes-Benz Econic is the only heavy-duty series production truck in the 18 to 26-ton gross vehicle weight class which is available with an overall height of 2.35 metres (with the low cab). It is specifically when a wide-bodied aircraft such as the A 380 has to be loaded that in theory the containers could also be delivered using larger trucks. However, with cab heights of 3.20 metres, these have the disadvantage of not being able to get close enough to the aircraft's oval-shaped fuselage.

Smaller trucks from the 12-ton class, meanwhile, have the disadvantage of more vehicles being needed for a delivery, and in turn more space for them to park next to the plane, which is not always possible. The Econic, with a gross vehicle weight of 18 to 26 tons, is precisely the right size and also tailor-made for catering thanks to its low frame, full air suspension, folding door, panoramic windscreen and automatic transmission.

Once there were on-board chefs

According to the historical records of Lufthansa, in the 1930s when commercial air travel started, it was quite normal for a chef to travel on board the aircraft to prepare the meals in a proper kitchen. Aside from the various quantities involved, this has not been possible for a long time now due to safety reasons. The low-temperature operations of LSG in Alzey alone currently produce up to 700,000 meals per week. These meals are transported to the aircraft by catering vehicles, heated up in the aircraft galleys and served via trolleys.

Environmentally-friendly engine line-up

The Econic has a whole host of other benefits to offer too. These include in particular the vehicle's environmentally-friendly engines: the Econic can be driven by the 900 model series six-cylinder in-line diesel engines or by natural gas engines - both types are EEV-certified (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle).

At Arlanda Airport, Gate Gourmet is still using diesel engines. Its "neighbour" in Stockholm, Vatten Bromma - which supplies both drinking water and wastewater disposal services to the city's two million inhabitants - has been using Mercedes-Benz Econic vehicles with natural gas engines, available since 2002, for a good seven years now. The M 906 LAG natural gas engine produces 205 kW (279 hp) from a displacement of 6.9 litres. The best part here though is that Vatten Bromma runs the vehicles on biogas from its wastewater treatment plant. By way of comparison, this approached Nico’s total of 161 laps over the entire Spanish Grand Prix weekend in 2011. The F1 W03 has now covered 2420 km in winter testing, over five official test days and two 100 km filming days. This equates to a daily average of 444 km during the test days, with Michael and Nico running for over 100 laps on Thursday and Friday respectively.

The next test for MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS will take place at the Circuit de Catalunya from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 March.

Nico Rosberg
“After our first full test with the F1 W03, I can see that we are making good steps forward. Our test programme went well this week and we have made evident progress each day. In terms of reliability, the car is performing pretty much as we expected which is really important as we can concentrate on improving the performance. Of course it’s difficult at this stage to predict how we will fare in race conditions against our competitors but overall I’m pleased with the start that we have made. I’m looking forward to the final test next week before the season begins, and continuing our learning with our F1 W03.”

Ross Brawn
“We have had a very positive first week of running with the F1 W03. After five full test days, we have completed over 2000 km, Nico and Michael have done consistent mileage and reliability has been ok, aside from a couple of problems earlier in the week. Both drivers have already completed full race simulations, and this really is a tribute to all the hard work that was done back at base in Brackley and Brixworth to ensure we hit the ground running this year with the new car - as well as to the efforts of our day and night shifts at the track in Barcelona. This basis means that the drivers and engineers have been able to work well with the car rather than chasing problems, and next week we hope to focus even more on getting performance out of our current package. Overall, we are in a reasonable position, but I don’t for a moment believe we have achieved our objectives yet. It may be something of a winter testing cliché, but there is still an awful lot to be done, and it´s far too early to make any kind of judgement about our competitiveness.”

TIMES

Official photos and report courtesy of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. Despite following the same style as the B-Class, the compact hatchback features distinctive details, such as a slightly revised center console and a sportier instrument cluster. Later on, Autobild magazine released a picture of what seems to be a pre-production A-Class. The model looks real and in line with what we've seen so far (HERE). However, compared to Concept A-Class, the final street car has been toned down quite seriously, but at least some of the dynamic design has been preserved for the good. The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class will be live on the stage of the Geneva Motor Show starting the 6th March, so in less than two weeks we shall see better images and learn more official details.

Follow after the jump and check out the newest spy shots of the A-Class!

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. We have recently reported the midsized SLC AMG is just about being approved for serial production; in addition, a high-end 700 hp choice above the current SLS is also on the discussion table. A new generation of the modern Gullwing is due to go on sale towards 2015/2016 and now, after seeing this intriguing set of allegedly official patent drawings that lately emerged on interwebs, we wonder if Mercedes-Benz is seriously exploring the possibility of offering a 4-door SLS AMG hardcore limo. Rather unlikely for becoming a real model, the vehicle retains the roof-mounted Gullwing doors, receives two extra, backwards-opening rear ones and sports a B-pillar-free architecture, which should raise a dozen of problems concerning body rigidity. We feel such design proposal, even though interesting and catchy, would better fit a small, specialized tuner to produce it in limited edition. But, as well, the German carmaker could impress the public with an identical concept car at a future motor show.

Dear readers, what do you think about this 4-door SLS AMG? Also, see more sketches after the jump!

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. It confirmed what we have seen from the first tests with our new car, and that we don’t seem to have any big issues with reliability. The small things from the last two days I would rate as typical testing issues. So from my side, I am happy with our first full testing session, and we have definitely improved our game which is what we wanted to achieve. To what extent, we can only see later, but I am finishing with a positive feeling.”
TIMES

Official photos and report courtesy of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. First off the blocks is the Apple® iPhone®, which Mercedes-Benz has now integrated comprehensively into the user experience concept of the new A-Class, as the first automotive manufacturer in the world to take this step. Thanks to a new "Digital DriveStyle App", developed in-house, together with the „Drive Kit Plus for the Apple® iPhone®“, drivers can now access all the key content of their Apple® iPhone® through the in-vehicle display and enjoy safe and convenient operation of the device via the Controller on the center armrest. The attractive 'look' is ensured by the revolutionary user interface design. In a further world premiere, Mercedes-Benz will enable access to the voice-based intelligent companion Siri™ in the vehicle. This allows natural speech input, without the need for specific commands, to send messages, select music tracks and check the weather forecast or stock prices, as well as to make appointments. All the iPhone® integration functions can be used even with the entry-level Audio 20 system.

This seamless integration of the Apple® iPhone® into the vehicle, in conjunction with the new revolutionary user interface design, means that Mercedes-Benz is now able to offer the Facebook generation its natural home on four wheels, in the form of the new A-Class. Along with Facebook, Twitter and so on, the "Digital DriveStyle App" developed by Daimler offers further services and content to suit the digital lifestyle and will be available to download free of charge from the Apple® iTunes® store. Its highlights include:

- Personalised internet radio by AUPEO! Personal Radio, which offers radio stations that compile an individual program for listeners and recommend similar music by genre or artists based on personal taste.

- The advanced navigation software from Garmin, with internet-based real-time traffic information, online POI searches and 3D map display, all of which work even in combination with the entry-level multimedia system Audio 20

- A socially interactive experience involving "sharing", "posting" and the integration of music and other content from social networks including text-to-speech.

- An intuitive 'Car Finder' which automatically stores the vehicle's location. Pedestrian navigation makes it completely easy to find your way back to the car.

- Access to the voice-based intelligent companion Siri™.

New here is also the contextual and location-based display of menu content under the headings "Social", "Media" and "Places". The basic logic behind this was presented by Daimler for the first time in January of this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Appearing under the heading "Social", for example, are the various friends and latest news from the social networks.

The user interface design is unique and revolutionary. Transparent symbols are illuminated in red to create three-dimensionally arranged navigation levels. Within the three-dimensional illustration provided by this menu structure, the user can move intuitively between the various functions in fluid, animated transitions. The user interface concept was designed and implemented by designers and engineers in the Mercedes-Benz research and development center in Palo Alto, California/USA. Enlarging the display of content on the screen to an appropriate format for use in a vehicle and allowing it to be controlled through the ergonomically positioned Controller on the center armrest makes operating the system both safe and easy.

The iPhone® is connected through an interface developed by Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH. This allows content to be fed directly from the graphics output of the device to the display of the vehicle. At the same time, the iPhone® is both powered and charged automatically while it is being used.

Full iPhone® integration is not only possible in conjunction with the COMAND Online multimedia system. All functions, including navigation, can also be used even with the entry-level Audio 20 system. Mercedes-Benz is thus making it possible for the A-Class's younger target group in particular to continue their digital lifestyle seamlessly inside the vehicle. Both the "Digital DriveStyle App" and the "Drive Kit Plus for the Apple® iPhone®" will be making their debut in the new A-Class, which will be celebrating its world premiere at this year's Geneva Motor Show, and are also planned to be available from autumn 2012 for the B-, C- and E-Class.

Always at your service: the voice-based intelligent companion Siri™

As the first automotive manufacturer to do so, Mercedes-Benz will be introducing Siri™ in a vehicle with easy access to it from the “Digital DriveStyle App”. While conventional voice recognition software demands the use of specific spoken commands, Siri™ understands natural speech patterns and will even ask questions in return should more information be needed in order to complete a given task.

Siri™ is a function of the latest iPhone® generation, 4S, and acts as a personal assistant. Given verbal instructions, for example, it will access the personal calendar to make or decline requests for appointments or meetings. SMS text messages can be dictated or read out, and emails sent. Siri™ can also be used as a convenient way of accessing the complete range of music stored on an iPhone® or to request the latest weather forecast.

Always up-to-date: COMAND Online with Cloud technology and Mercedes-Benz App Shop
Safe and convenient access to the internet on the move is already available in a whole series of Mercedes-Benz models: the fully integrated multimedia system COMAND Online was introduced in 2011. As well as innovative applications such as Google Local Search including Google Street View and Panoramio, Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer to offer the option of sending individually preconfigured routes from Google Maps on a PC to the vehicle. The internet connection that is required for the functions in COMAND Online is established via a mobile telephone Bluetooth link and a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Mercedes-Benz is firmly convinced that the future lies with cloud computing. The software used in the COMAND Online applications is not stored in the vehicle, but runs off the Daimler Vehicle Backend. The advantage of this is that applications can be continually updated in the cloud, and new applications released to Mercedes-Benz customers, without the need to visit a workshop.

In this sense on March 31st, 2012 a new Mercedes-Benz App to access News will be available to COMAND Online customers.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz Apps for COMAND Online will be offered soon in the new Mercedes-Benz App Shop. The first two Mercedes-Benz Apps to become available in the App Shop will be the Parking Finder and Morningstar Finance, that offers access to stock prices.

It is planned to introduce a dozen or so new applications each year. To this end, Daimler has set up App Development Groups in both Palo Alto, California/USA, and Bangalore, India.

Credits: Daimler AG

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. The 43 year-old will be on hand at AMG events as a new AMG brand ambassador, alongside DTM championship record holder Bernd Schneider and David Coulthard. Karl Wendlinger will also be bolstering the team at the AMG Driving Academy as an instructor and supporting the SLS AMG GT3 Customer Sport teams.

SLS AMG GT3 customer teams can book Karl Wendlinger for test or racing sessions as part of the driver support programme from AMG Customer Sports and draw on his great knowledge as a sports car expert. The 43 year-old will be supporting his colleagues Bernd Schneider and Thomas Jäger, who have accompanied the SLS AMG GT3 throughout its entire development and testing programme. Jäger has been working as a coordinator for AMG Customer Sports since 2010.

In his new role for Mercedes-AMG, Karl Wendlinger will be on hand as a point of contact at press and customer events. As a new member of the AMG Driving Academy's team of instructors, he will also be on location at race tracks. Here too, he will join forces with Bernd Schneider and Thomas Jäger, who belong to the AMG Driving Academy's core team, along with Bernd Mayländer (driver of the official F1™ Safety Car).

Return to the Mercedes fold

For Karl Wendlinger, this collaboration marks a return to the Mercedes fold: from 1990 to 1991 the Austrian was a member of the Mercedes junior team competing in the sports car world championship along with Michael Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. In 1991 he switched to Formula 1. In 1994, Wendlinger raced for the Sauber-Mercedes team alongside Heinz-Harald Frentzen. "I'm happy to be returning to the Mercedes family," says Karl Wendlinger. "I'm looking forward to many joint projects with AMG. I'm relishing the opportunity to work alongside Bernd Schneider, Thomas Jäger and David Coulthard at selected AMG events."

"We are proud to welcome such a successful racing driver as Karl Wendlinger to the AMG team," says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "Karl Wendlinger is the likeable sort of character with whom people are keen to talk at our AMG events. His comprehensive technical knowledge and driving expertise will also be a boon to the AMG Driving Academy and the SLS AMG GT3 customer teams."

Successful career in sports car racing

Karl Wendlinger's motor sport career began in go-carting at the age of 14. In 1989 he won the German Formula 3 Championship. He subsequently competed in the DTM, Formula 3000 and the 24-hour Le Mansrace. After retiring from Formula 1, Karl Wendlinger raced in various touring and sports car series. His most outstanding successes on the race track include winning the FIA GT Championship (1999), 1st place in the 24-hour Le Mans race in the GTS-Class (in the same year), overall victory in the 24-hour Daytona racein 2000 and 2nd place in the 24-hour Nürburgring race (2003). Karl Wendlinger raced for various teams in the FIA GT Championship from 2004 to 2011. In 2007 he was runner-up with Jetalliance Racing.

* Official photos and details courtesy of Mercedes-AMG GmbH *

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. Early in the morning, it was a bit too cold on the track to collect some decent information, however later we were able to get into our planned work. In the afternoon session, unfortunately we had a transmission oil leak which meant that I wasn’t able to complete any further running. That doesn’t affect my positive feelings about our test programme, and things like that can happen in the early stages of running a new car. Now I am looking forward to driving again on Friday.”

TIMES

Official photos and report courtesy of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. Around six months are left from this moment until the official reveal scheduled for the Paris motor show at the beginning of October. We shall probably see the finished product earlier, around one month ahead the world debut, when Mercedes-Benz usually releases some initial images and details to preview a new model.

While we are sure the new S-Class will definitely boast state-of-the-art technologies and system, we are worried about what we see in these latest spy shots. After shaving off the camouflage, the prototype reveals more of the exterior design. And, somehow, we do not feel the car. Afraid or not, we could be unpleasantly surprised when the S-Class is unveiled. All in all, the W 222 generation seems looks to be a shy evolution of the current W 221 model, as the new elements seem to have been simply applied to the old body.

Even though it appears to have grown in length, the style is basically the same, if one observes the greenhouse or the general aspect of the rear end. At least, the criticized bulged wheel arches are gone, but we can't help wondering about what could lie under the camouflage applied to the sides of the car. Crazy design experiments work for inferior models, but not for an executive limousine such as the S-Class, so it would better have a clean, elegant profile.

Some influence from the F 700 research vehicle of 2007 can be spotted: a mild, harmonious rear end with beautifully shaped LED lamps is left to fight with a very aggressive, heavy and gnarled front fascia, dominated by a gargantuan, powerful grille, also inspired by the F 700, but at least harking back to old, traditional Mercedes-Benz cars built during the first decades of the 20th century. To continue in the same note and the make room for equipment, such as the radars used for the MAGIC BODY CONTROL ride management system, the headlight needed to be bigger. And they are... huge and overdesigned, we say. So far, the evidence points to the computer-generated illustration Autobild released back in 2010.

Hopefully, the Germans haven't screwed up the new S-Class aesthetically and Mercedes-Benz is not living its own "Bangle era" as BMW did between 2000 and 2006. This prestigious model, boasting a rich heritage, does not need to be visually intriguing. It just has to be what it's intended to be: an S-Class by all means.

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. The new version of the high-performance Roadster impresses on several counts: systematic lightweight construction, a boost in output and driving dynamics, and 30 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to an all-aluminium bodyshell, similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car, the vehicle weight has been reduced by 125 kilograms. With a kerb weight of 1845 kilograms and an output of 395 kW (537 hp) or 415 kW (564 hp), the new model has the perfect recipe for unparalleled dynamism and a superior driving experience. A further boost in performance comes courtesy of a winning combination: enhanced AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control (ABC), new AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the AMG high-performance compound brake system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. An enticing mix of stylish design, extensive standard equipment and a high safety level.

Ola Källenius, CEO at Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "The new SL 63 AMG is yet another masterpiece from Mercedes-AMG. Be it driving dynamics, lightweight construction or efficiency – the SL 63 AMG represents a giant leap forward. Following on from the SLS AMG Roadster and the SLK 55 AMG, it now makes our unrivalled roadster family practically complete."

Superior performance and high efficiency: the SL 63 AMG is available with a choice of two power outputs for the first time. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 'biturbo' (twin-turbocharged) engine delivers 395 kW (537 hp) and 800 Nm of torque. If the AMG Performance package is specified, these figures rise to 415 kW (564 hp) and 900 Nm – more power than any other competitor in this segment. The result is high-calibre performance, as underlined by the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds, and to 200 km/h in 12.9 or 12.6 seconds respectively. Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited), although this rises to 300 km/h (likewise electronically limited) with the AMG Performance package on board. NEDC combined consumption comes in at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres for both power outputs – a full 4.2 litres or 30 percent lower than for the outgoing model.

The eight-cylinder powerplant with the abbreviation M 157 features a combination of innovative high-tech components for high power output, and it delivers exemplary, low fuel consumption. In addition to spray-guided direct petrol injection, the engine boasts an all-aluminium crankcase, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, alternator management and an ECO start/stop function. The weight-optimised AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes produces a distinctive engine sound.

The key data at a glance:

Intelligent lightweight construction with aluminium bodyshell and carbon fibre

Intelligent lightweight construction is one of the major factors behind the low fuel consumption figures. The SL 63 AMG is based on a lightweight all-aluminium bodyshell similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car. Compared to the outgoing model, this design not only delivers a significant weight saving of around 110 kilograms, it also greatly enhances rigidity, safety and comfort. Intelligent lightweight construction also means that the components have been optimised in line with their specific purpose. Various types of processing are used for the aluminium components, for instance, which are produced as permanent mould castings or vacuum die castings before being processed into extruded sections or used as sheet aluminium with varying wall thicknesses. The result is high rigidity, high safety and improved vibration characteristics. For the cover behind the tank, the designers use even lighter magnesium material in some cases. High-strength steel tubes are integrated into the A-pillars for safety reasons.

The boot lid helps to further trim the weight. For the first time on a volume-produced model, the inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared to a conventional boot lid – an innovative solution destined initially for the SL 63 AMG. This raft of innovative lightweight-design measures means that, at an EC kerb weight of 1845 kilograms, the new SL 63 AMG is 125 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces.

AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control

The lightweight-design measures are not just limited to the body of the SL 63AMG, however, as the steering knuckles and spring links on the 4-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension components are made of aluminium. The reduction in unsprung masses enhances both agility and the response of the spring and damper components.

Mercedes-AMG is remaining faithful to the ABC active spring and damper system: the new SL 63 AMG is equipped with an enhanced version of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control as standard. During the design, development and testing phases, the focus was firmly on driving dynamics and performance. Exceptionally sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping ("Sport") or more comfort-oriented settings for a high level of comfort on long journeys ("Comfort") can be selected at the push of a button. To enable greater agility and faster cornering speeds, the SL 63 AMG has more negative camber all round and fully revised elastokinematics.

Equipped with the new, electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the flagship AMG model impresses with its fleet-footed, agile cornering and exceptional feedback at the critical limits. The steering has a constant and more direct ratio, and variable power assistance which adjusts in line with the suspension settings. Further standard equipment includes 3‑stage ESP®, a speciality exclusive to AMG with "SPORT Handling" mode for particularly keen drivers, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include an AMG rear axle differential lock and AMG performance suspension.

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Power transmission can likewise be adapted to specific requirements, as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual). In "C" mode, the ECO start/stop function is active at all times and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. Plus the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The engine and transmission are far more agile in "S", "S+" and "M" mode; in addition, the stop/start function is deactivated. Partial suppression of the cylinders proves perfect for a committed driving style: briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts than before. A welcome side effect of this is the emotive sound impression. An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Newly developed AMG high-performance compound brake system

Maximum performance is also a top priority when it comes to braking: the newly developed AMG high-performance compound brake system features 390 x 36 mm compound discs with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and 360 x 26 mm integral discs with single-piston floating callipers at the rear. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include red-painted callipers to denote the AMG Performance package and the even more high-performance, weight-optimised AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system as seen on the SLS AMG.

The SL 63 AMG leaves the factory fitted with five-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, shod with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 19 rear tyres. Multi-spoke AMG forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 20 rear tyres – also available in matt black including a rim flange with a high-sheen finish – help to reduce the unsprung masses.

Design: stylish, superior, dynamic

SLS AMG Roadster, SLK 55 AMG and SL 63 AMG – as the latest addition to the AMG Roadster family, the flagship V8 model displays the hallmark styling elements of a superior high-performance car from Affalterbach: the dynamically distinctive AMG bodystyling comprises the front apron with large air dams, AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps and a lower cross strut in silver chrome. Among the particularly eye-catching features are the new AMG radiator grille with a double louvre in silver chrome, the side sill panels and the "V8 BITURBO" logos on the vent grilles with fins in silver chrome. At the rear, the AMG spoiler lip, the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system and the diffuser-style rear apron with body-coloured insert draw the design to a fitting conclusion.

Vario-roof: MAGIC SKY CONTROL as an option

The sixth-generation SL retains the space-saving, electrohydraulically retractable vario-roof, enabling the SL to be transformed into a roadster or a coupé, as the mood takes the driver and depending on the weather, in under 20 seconds. In contrast to the outgoing model, there are three versions to choose from for the new SL: painted roof, glass roof or the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. Its transparency can be switched to light or dark at the push of a button.

Interior: a feast for all the senses

The SL 63 AMG interior is likewise inspired by the SLS AMG and offers a feast for all the senses: the four air vents styled like jet engines, the E-SELECT lever and the AMG DRIVE UNIT are all reminiscent of the super sports car. Standard equipment includes AMG sports seats in single-tone or two-tone nappa leather with a unique V8 seat upholstery layout and AMG badges in the seat backrests, a multicontour function and seat heating as well as AMG carbon-fibre trim, AMG illuminated door sill panels, ambient lighting and an IWC-design analogue clock. One of the stand-out details on the AMG performance steering wheel is the AMG logo in the lower metal insert. The sportily designed AMG instrument cluster provides a wealth of information and includes a TFT colour monitor, AMG start-up display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER. Outstanding material quality and high-calibre workmanship underline the attention to detail paid by the Mercedes and AMG experts.

Further standard equipment for the SL 63 AMG at a glance (selection):

- ATTENTION ASSIST
- COMAND Online with 6-disc DVD changer
- Anti-theft alarm system
- Frontbass
- Remote-unlocking boot lid incl. power closing for boot lid
- Intelligent Light System ILS
- MAGIC VISION CONTROL adaptive windscreen cleaning system
- NECK-PRO head restraints
- PRE-SAFE® system
- Automatic, pop-up roll-over bars for driver and front passenger
- Draught-stop

In keeping with tradition, the SL 63 AMG has an extensive range of optional extras (selection):

- AIRSCARF neck-level heating
- Active Parking Assist incl. The rigid aluminium bodyshell forms a robust occupant compartment as well as precisely defined deformation zones at the front and rear. If the vehicle rolls over, A-pillars made from a steel-aluminium material mix and two automatic roll-over bars help to protect the occupants.

The restraint systems, including two-stage driver and passenger airbags, have been further enhanced. A headbag extensively covers the side head-impact area. An additional thorax airbag in the backrest can protect the upper body in the event of a side impact. Further new standard features for the SL include the Mercedes-Benz-developed NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints. An active bonnet and a front end with a large, yielding impact area help ensure pedestrian protection.

A winning formula: the SL models made by AMG

The powerful SL models from Affalterbach are among the most successful AMG models of all time: almost 5000 SL 63 AMG models with eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine were sold between 2008 and 2011. Over 21,500 of the SL 55 AMG models with V8 supercharged engine produced between 2001 and 2007 were sold, making it the best-selling AMG model so far. The total number of SL AMG models with eight-cylinder engine sold to date stands at over 26,500.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG will be launched in May 2012. After an early morning unveiling in the pit lane by Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, Michael then took the wheel for the day’s running.

- A smooth morning session enabled the team to begin set-up comparisons with the new chassis
- A hydraulic problem identified during the afternoon session brought an early end to the planned programme
- Michael completed 51 laps today, taking the F1 W03’s total mileage to 782 km to date

Nico will take over the programme tomorrow, with Michael back in the car on Thursday, and Nico concluding the test on Friday.

Michael Schumacher
“My initial feelings with our new car are certainly good. I’m happy with the different evaluations that we have done over the last week, but obviously with the rule changes, we won’t know more until later. It’s certainly an improvement and we have worked hard on the areas we had defined last year. The aerodynamics figures look good so I’m not worried about the shape of the nose! Even though we had the hydraulic problem today, I’m pleased with all the mileage we have achieved so far with the new car.”

TIMES

Official photos and report courtesy of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS

* Note: As former MERCEDES GP PETRONAS F1 TEAM changed the official title to MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 TEAM after the 2011 season, the new acronym for our F1 articles related to the German-British team shifts from MGP to MBAMGF1.

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. The new high-performance roadster, which develops 537 hp while delivering weight savings of 125 kg and 30% improved fuel economy, was introduced by Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.

The new Silver Arrow, the F1 W03, has undergone an intensive programme of simulation testing at the team’s technical bases in Brackley and Brixworth. This was followed by a filming day limited to 100 kms at Silverstone on 16 February, and a private test day in Barcelona on 19 February, during which the car ran for 354 km. Michael and Nico shared driving duties on both days.

The new car concept is based on a largely stable set of technical regulations, which nevertheless include two significant changes: revision of the maximum bodywork height at the front of the car, which encouraged the distinctive stepped-nose design; and new restrictions concerning the positioning of the exhausts, designed to prevent the aerodynamic benefit gained from exhaust gases during 2011, the so-called ‘blown diffuser’.

The F1 W03 project was begun in May 2011 and is the first full car produced by a technical team that was strengthened last year with recruitments at every level of the organisation. The new car, which is composed of some 4500 parts compared to 4300 parts in 2011, has nevertheless achieved a lower core weight than its predecessor, is better packaged and more efficient. All mandatory FIA crash tests had been successfully completed at the first attempt by the end of the first week of January 2012.

“The F1 W03 is a car that I believe, and hope, our team can be proud of, and which will deliver the on-track results that everybody has worked so hard to achieve,” Team Principal Ross Brawn commented. “Notwithstanding the distinctive nose design, which is certainly an acquired taste, the F1 W03 is an elegant interpretation of the current regulations, and a clear step forward over its predecessor in terms of detail design and sophistication. Last year, we produced a very bold car and, although its more radical elements didn’t always deliver the results we had hoped for, the experience we gained has been invaluable to the design of the 2012 car. The F1 W03 is also a more integrated package, which reflects the ever-strengthening ties between our technical teams in Brackley and Brixworth, and demonstrates that our Silver Arrows works team is taking the next step forward in terms of on-track performance.”

Nico, who drove the first laps in the F1 W03 on 16 February in Silverstone, commented: “We have had a good start to our 2012 testing programme, and it was a great feeling to drive the first laps in the new F1 W03. The car looks good, and is very nicely packaged under the bodywork – all the parts are in harmony, which reflects how well the different departments of our team are working together. From the beginning of our running, we have been able to focus on understanding the car and making good progress with our test programme. It will be very interesting to learn more about where we stand in the next few weeks.”

Michael, who will complete the first full day of official testing with the new car today in Barcelona, commented: “I have done quite a few roll-outs and launches of new cars, but even after all these years, I must say it still feels special. Days like this are precious moments, as they are always filled with hope and anticipation. Already last week, when we were driving the F1 W03 for the very first time, it instantly gave us good feedback and sensations. Starting today, we will work intensively to make it a competitive runner. Obviously, we will only see over the next couple of weeks how big the step is that we have made, but I can say already that the guys and girls back in the factories at Brackley and Brixworth were brilliant in putting in so much effort, and we can only say a big thank you them. I know which reward they would like, and we will definitely try to deliver it. For my part, I am eager to fight again, looking forward to the new season, and I can’t wait for it to begin.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, concluded: “2012 will mark the third season for our Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows works team, which was introduced in January 2010, and our target is to take a step forward in on-track performance. A lot of work has been done throughout the last year, not just to design the new car but also to build a technical organisation that is capable of delivering to its full potential, with consistency. Our ultimate goal is to become regular race winners and championship contenders, and so to write another chapter of success in the story of the Silver Arrows which began 78 years ago. And even though the restyled G-Class 2012, which you can partially see in the (leaked) detail shot on the left, was also on the verge of the official premiere, the moment is postponed till April for the Beijing Motor Show. We do not know anything certain regarding the reveal of the new generation GL-Class, but we guess June is the perfect time, one year after the M-Class came into force. There are busy SUV times coming at Mercedes-Benz, which is highly pleasant news for us.

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. It obviously does not reveal too much of the 2012 title contender. What is of main interest is the very first performance of the car, as Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher took the single-seater for an initial shakedown on the British circuit. As the regulations state, both drivers were able to complete a total of 50 kilometers each. The video you see above was recorded with a special helmet-mounted camera while Nico was taking the F1 W03 out for a spin at Silverstone last week.

A fan outside the track managed to capture a glimpse of the new car. As expected, the nose cone meets the new rules and regulations, so this leaves Vodafone McLaren Mercedes as the sole F1 team to feature the "old-school" design of previous years. Hit the jump and see more!

Video Credits: MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. Alberto Fermoso, Head of Sales for Mercedes-Benz Buses Spain, was presented with the award by Rafael Barbadillo, President of the Spanish passenger association Asintra, at a ceremony in Madrid.

Since 1998, a jury of experts from across the transport industry has voted for the best new commercial vehicles on behalf of specialist truck magazines Viajeros and Transporte 3 (Publisher: Editec).

Travego Edition 1: the first touring coach to meet the Euro VI emissions standard

The Travego Edition 1 is the first coach to meet the future Euro VI emissions standard, which becomes binding at the beginning of 2014. The Travego Edition 1 features the new range of BlueEfficiency Power engines, a new transmission with new gearshift, a further upgraded, ergonomically optimised cockpit, and new safety features. Customers with an eye to the future who opt for the Mercedes-Benz flagship can thus become trailblazers in terms of environmental friendliness.

High-torque Mercedes-Benz engine from the new BlueEfficiency Power engine generation

The engine of the Travego Edition 1 is a vertically installed in-line six-cylinder from the new OM 471 series. From a displacement of 12.8 l it develops 350 kW (476 hp) at 1800 rpm. The high maximum torque runs up to 2300 Nm at 1100 rpm. These figures, together with the characteristics of the new power plant, guarantee outstanding performance. The engine features the unique common-rail injection system X-Pulse with pressure booster. This delivers extremely precise fuel injection with cylinder-selective control, high injection pressures of up to 2100 bar and freely modulated injection – the prerequisites for low fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions and smooth engine operation.

Additional advantages result from the highly effective three-stage exhaust brake and the asymmetric turbocharger. Despite exhaust gas recirculation this ensures rapid response to accelerator movements to the benefit of agile driving performance. The torque characteristics of the new engine permit unusually low, fuel-saving engine speeds.

Conflict between emissions and fuel consumption resolved

The particularly stringent requirements of the future Euro VI emissions standard for nitrogen oxide emissions (NOX) generally stand in contradiction to the demands for further reduced particulate emissions and low fuel consumption. Mercedes‑Benz resolves these conflicting objectives with its unique new X-Pulse injection technology, in conjunction with a complex emission control system. This involves the BlueTec engine technology with SCR and AdBlue injection that has already been proven in more than 100,000 units being combined with exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter.

All in all, Euro VI in the Travego Edition I leads to a further dramatic reduction in pollutant emissions - without the increase in fuel consumption that was initially feared. At the same time AdBlue consumption is reduced by around 40 percent.

Euro VI components have no effect on passenger and luggage capacity

For optimum weight distribution the developers relocated the fuel tank to a position forward of the front axle, in a swap with the batteries, while at the same time the vehicle weight was further reduced through the optimisation of standard production components (e.g. windows and air conditioning system). In this way an important target was achieved: Euro VI buses should not show any negative impact on passenger and luggage capacity compared with the previous Euro V models.

Ergonomically optimised driver's cockpit redesigned down to the last detail
The steering-column lever used to operate the gearshift is one of the most conspicuous modifications to have been made to the cockpit. This lever replaces the joystick on the dashboard used until now. It is used to control all functions and yet, because of the intuitive nature of its operation, remains extremely user-friendly.

But the developers have realised many more new ideas besides to optimise the ergonomics for the driver, for example a redesigned display concept. The use of pictograms, along with structured menu navigation via the new multifunction steering wheel, makes it appreciably simpler to access the various functions and displays.

The ignition and the engine start/stop system are controlled by a two-stage pushbutton switch. The switches in the cockpit have been rearranged according to function and their number noticeably reduced by assigning them multiple purposes. The joystick shift lever used hitherto is replaced in the Travego Edition 1 with an open stowage tray.

New safety system Attention Assist warns of drowsiness

The Travego Edition I is the first coach for which Attention Assist is available as a special equipment item. This is a system that registers parameters such as steering angle, speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, travelling time, control signals and driver changes. By correlating the data, Attention Assist draws inferences about the driver's condition. If the data indicate a lack of concentration and drowsiness, a coffee cup symbol appears on the display as a hint that it's time to take a break.

Credits: Daimler AG

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. This new approach to customer engagement enables customers and prospects to experience more of the C-Class Coupé design, performance and technology. With all the information of the brochure and the price list combined, the app carries a wealth of content. But that is not all: the interactive section makes use of the iPad’s capabilities and informs as much as it entertains.

David George, Marketing Director Mercedes-Benz Cars said: “We live in a culture that’s almost always on-line, and is used to rich media experiences, and our new iPad Brochure app really brings the C-Class Coupé to life.

“Rather than having to wait for a brochure to be delivered, or read a pdf of a paper product, the new app is instant, and it shows the vehicles’ features and functions in attention-grabbing ways.”

The model lines section shows off the new car in all its glory and, at the same time, allows the reader to compare all engine and trim combinations; from the Sport to the C 63 AMG. Using the slider function the reader can compare every detail of two selected cars at three different angles. The app also contains a gallery of images and a driving video for each variant, allowing the customer to be completely satisfied with their choice of styling options before committing to buy.

The configurator is a great way to display the exterior and interior choices that are available. Configuring the C-Class Coupé together with a customer offers showroom staff a great opportunity to stay in touch with a prospective customer. Optional data capture enables the sales teams to send an email to their customers with their personally configured C-Class Coupé, as well as new car offers for 2012.

Explaining features such as the Intelligent Light System is extremely simple, thanks to this app. Even the different lighting modes are easily explained with a real life video and illustrations pointing out the difference between Intelligent Light System (ILS) and regular lights.

The interactive part of the app is split into three sections: Design, Performance and Technology.

Each section has three or four topics to explore:

- Design features the information on the Panoramic sunroof, the ability to compare Model lines, and the interactive Configurator.

- The Performance section allows customers and prospects to explore the engine options available on the C-Class Coupé, as well as information on systems such as Dynamic Handling Package. This section also features an in depth look at BlueEFFICIENCY – efficiency technology that’s standard on every car.

- Technology looks at in-car Multimedia, and state of the art safety features, including Driving Assistance Package, and a demonstration of the Intelligent Light System.

The Read more section in the app holds all the information of the brochure. From anywhere in the app the user can go to ‘Read more’, offering in-depth information on any of the related section topics. There is also a search function which allows the customer to search for any topic.

The section ‘Contact and pricing’ holds all the pricing information and technical tables, as well as standard and optional specification tables.

To make it easy for customers to find the nearest Retailer, there is a built in Retailer locator. The customer can either use GPS to determine closest retailer to current location or use a typed in address.

The app launched today and is available from the iTunes APP store as well as the download page on the Mercedes-Benz UK public website: mb.co.uk/ccoupeapp .

Credits: Mercedes-Benz UK

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. In order to keep the car contemporary up to 2015 when a phase-out is possible, the Gelandewagen is currently undergoing a styling and technical revamp treatment.

While changes on the design department are subtle and include minor visual tweaks to headlights, tail lamps, exterior mirrors, radiator grille and front end/rear end bumpers, the upgrades to the powertrain and equipment are set to maintain the G-Class as a powerful offroader on the market.

It goes without saying all G-Class models come with 4MATIC traction as standard device. New and efficient engines are expected to power the car: the G 350 BlueTEC is here to stay, but we guess that along the G 300 CDI with 184 hp, Mercedes-Benz could also offer a G 350 CDI version rated at 265 hp. Moreover, a G 350 BlueEFFICIENCY equipped with the 3.5-litre direct-injection V6 capable of 306 hp is also possible. The range-topping G 500 variant will receive company's 4.7-litre biturbo V8 unit reaching 435 hp of peak output and 700 Nm of maximum torque.

Moving on to the AMG models, the G 55 AMG (or G 63 AMG ??) will shift into a new generation with the addition of the new 5.5-litre twinturbocharged V8 that produces 544 hp - yet, rumors claim the 6.3-litre aspirated V8 engine with over 500 hp is also likely to power the monster. If this was not enough, then prepare yourselves for the introduction of the limited edition G 65 AMG boasting no less than 630 hp out of the furious 6.0-litre V12 unit.

The interior of the new G-Class is bound to get an improved look with new, more premium appointments. The restyled dashboard includes a new instrument cluster, a CLS-esque steering wheel, a revised center console and up-to-date climate control and COMAND infotainment system, probably available with internet capability as well. The entire lineup of security and assistance gimmicks Mercedes-Benz have premiered recently will also find their way onto the new G-Class. Looking at the latest spy shots, we think the Gelandewagen is ready for a Geneva debut, even though New York or Beijing motor shows sound more reasonable.

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog. Rivals speculate the Silver Arrows team will bring a series of spectacular aerodynamic and gas exhaust innovations on the F1 W03 car, this being the major reason of the delay. The dark teasers don't reveal too much, but we can be sure the nose will be in line with the new regulations. Hopefully, the Brackley engineers managed to find a more elegant, yet efficient solution, similar to McLaren's MP4-27, although the pictures seem to tell a different story...

Copyright © 2012, Mercedes-Benz-Blog.
