We're so thrilled to once again bring you our infinitely talented friend, designer Kara Janx. 2012 has been good to Kara. As if her successful run on Lifetime's Project Runway All Stars wasn't accomplishment enough, Kara has managed to add another illustrious notch on her belt: Fashion designer, television personality, wife, mother, entrepreneur and now, newly minted bridal designer.
With looks perfect for every occasion, Kara's new bridal collection gracefully takes us from the engagement session to the rehearsal dinner, and then to the big day with stunning versatility and dynamic pops of color...
We're thrilled to be sharing exclusive insight to Kara's new venture with Merci New York's chic and stylish readers. Merci: Kara, we must congratulate you on your Project Runway success and new bridal line! Wife, mom, designer, reality tv contestant... what inspired you to add a bridal collection to your already full plate?

Kara: The Ready to Wear line translated so easily into Bridal that after numerous requests from brides, it was an easy and wonderful transition.

Merci: What differentiates Kara Janx from other bridal collections?

Kara: The line feels current and relevant and the wearer can truly wear the dress again. The collection is subtle and contemporary.

Merci: What advice do you have for brides-to-be looking for "the dress?"

Kara: To be true to who you are, too often brides get swept up in the whole idea of 'the day' that they loose site of their own personal taste.

Merci: How did your wedding influence your bridal designs?

Kara: Comfort and confidence, in that I mean that all brides should not have to worry about a thing on this special day. Everything they envisioned should be elevated and naturally they should feel comfortable, confident and of course GORGEOUS.

Merci: What was your bridal style? Has it changed since you've began designing bridal?

Kara: Simple and chic, it hasn't changed but it has certainly evolved. Bridal opens the gateway to a whole new world of fabrications and silhouette and I love that I can explore all my options when it comes to design.

Merci: Jumpsuits are taking over the bridal runway. We were thrilled to see your take on the trend. Stunning! Who is the jumpsuit-wearing-bride? What would you say to the women torn between dress and suit?

Kara: When you get married, I think it's important to express yourself, the jumpsuit is so non-traditional and if that's what you opt for it's a great alternative. It's fantastic that there are choices out there. I have had a lot of my brides wear the jumpsuit to their rehearsal dinners. They are saying, "I am fashion forward," but on their wedding day they are really traditional, it's a great way of mixing things up.

Merci: We are in love with the prints and pops of color in your line. What considerations should a bride take when incorporating pattern and color into her wedding?

Kara: Brides want to explore more options. I always recommend brides send me a swatch of color and then I try to find a print or color that doesn't overwhelm the ceremony, but rather enhance it. Some of my 50's style brides are going with a cheetah print dress with red lips and heels. Honestly if the proportions are right and the print or amazing pop of color feels like an extension of yourself, it's a great way to freshen up the wedding and make it feel super current.

Merci: So we've all heard, "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue," what reccomendations do you have for a bride when creating her wedding look?

Kara: Think about the whole picture, try always to be true to who you are and what you represent. The sincerety will translate and you will live with this amazing memory forever. Take your time and enjoy the process, this really is your moment to be the most beautiful bride in the world.

Merci: What is your best piece of advice for the fashion loving bride?

Kara: Go there, take a chance, be risky. Trends come and go and when we look back at our pictures they will always set the tone of the time and place, it's great to be your own trendsetter.

Merci: Though your native home is South Africa, we selfishly love that you're now a resident New Yorker. What affect has living in New York had on your collections/style?

Kara: Street fashion in New York is progressive, relevant and so stylish. People express themselves through their style and it is so apparent on the streets, I love seeing a girl rocking something unexpected, it totally inspires me.

Colin Cowie Hosts Four Valentine's Day Weddings Atop the Empire State Building

When celebrity event planner extraordinaire {and Merci's contributing expert} Colin Cowie decided to launch his very own bridal web site, Colin Cowie Weddings, we were thrilled, but also extremely expectant... We knew a celebratory bottle of bubbly wouldn't suffice as a large enough launch for the lifestyle guru, and that he would clearly "go big" on his grand reveal. Needless to say, we were right.
This past Tuesday, Colin Cowie commemorated his launch by throwing four glamorous weddings... all on Valentine's Day... and all in the legendary Empire State Building.
Of course, we knew if anyone could pull it off it was Colin, so Merci New York tagged along for the ride. We lovingly captured the behind the scenes details of San Francisco couple Angela and Lubin's wedding. The Colin Cowie "Wings of Love" contest winners celebrated their union with a tea party themed wedding atop the legendary New York landmark. Check out the adorable couple as they tie the knot with a little help from our friend Colin and his talented team...

Merci: Colin, thanks for having us! Can you tell us a bit about today's events?

Colin Cowie: This is a very exciting day for us! We're making history for several reasons. It's the launch of colincowieweddings.com, an online platform that provides fabulous weddings for brides of all ages and all incomes. Merci: We're so happy you chose NYC as the site for the "Wings of Love" weddings! Why stage the weddings here?

Colin Cowie: I wanted to do a big idea for the launch and what was bigger then partnering with the Empire State Building on the world's most romantic day, arguably in the most romantic building in the world?!

Merci: Four weddings in one day, how did you make each wedding special?

Colin Cowie: In order to make this ceremony of love come alive we decided to host these four live events. Not only is this chic and elegant wedding a trend for Colin Weddings 2012 but what I did was really listen carefully to our couple.

Merci: What kind of ceremony was right for the couple?

Colin Cowie: We're doing a rather formal ceremony for Angela and Lubin. One of the fun of rituals is it brings different cultures together. I think it's very important for us to get a window into their lives and be able to do something that puts them all on the same path.

Merci: "Love is in the details," can you share a few of your favorite details behind Angela and Lubin's wedding?

Colin Cowie: Each guest received a yard and a half of ribbon and to write a note to the bride and groom. The notes were placed on top of an archway that they walk under. So they are married surrounded by the love and intention of their family and friends. After the ceremony we roll the ribbons up and present them in a box so they can look back at the love from their family and friends.

Merci: We love the decor! Innovative, creative and tres chic! How did the idea come together?
Colin Cowie: Afternoon tea is a great trend when you think about it. There are 52 Saturday nights in a year. It's the most coveted night to celebrate and I think a great alternative if you want to have an event or wedding without spending a fortune is to have afternoon tea. So we set this beautiful afternoon tea up for them.

Merci: Stunning. We especially love the reception space.

Colin Cowie: The actual table itself is very very beautiful. We found a white canvas that was foil stemmed with a damask pattern with a beautiful soft pink runner down the middle of the table.

Merci: How could a bride, engaged couple, or those looking for a chic soiree incorporate the tea party theme into their event?

Colin Cowie: The idea here is rather then spending a lot of money on flowers the afternoon tea really is the centerpiece. We took old candelabras and we spray painted them baby pink with matching candlesticks to anchor the table. And all the scones, sandwiches, deserts, candies, and cookies creates a look that mirrors a banquet or the last supper.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week | Exclusive Interview with Star Lounge Designer, Wesley Cadle

As you can imagine, we love everything fashion week at Merci New York, from the hordes of fashionistas circling Lincoln Center to the chaotically creative buzz surrounding the tents! This year we were especially excited to be ushered behind the velvet ropes of fashion week into the Star Lounge by none other the space's designer, Wesley Cadle. Corporate events, a new lifestyle store, and NYC weddings: Wesley Cadle does it all {with oodles of charm}! The design superstar {and Southern gentleman} toured us around The Star Lounge, answering our questions while sharing his approach to wedding design... Enjoy!

Merci: So, could you tell us a bit about this beautiful Star Lounge?
Wesley: The Star Lounge was inspired by a silk scarf. You can see the silk scarf I have around my neck by a company called Porter Teleo. It's the same line you see around you {on the walls}. It's all hand painted. If you start from one end and go to the other all the panels are done as one of series. Then, they are put on panels and placed on the wall. It's really a piece of art on each wall, as well as the ceiling, which we've illuminated from above.

Merci: It looks like a ton of work!

Wesley: It's amazing, and they do this full time out of Kansas City.

Merci: How did a scarf become the inspiration for a luxury lounge ?

Wesley: Well, I've been thinking of the whole idea of fashion. What to do to pull it in as a fashion experience. Last year we used Christian Lacroix fabric and a combination of beautiful things. This year I decided to take the silk scarf inspiration and expand it to where you're wrapped in a silk scarf. And you kind of are!

It's all sort of calm, cool and collected. And that's where Stephanie Hirish's piece above the mantle came in, "Keep Calm and Carry On." Do you know who Stephanie Hirsh is? She was a model, now she's a graphic artist. Donny Deutsch's girlfriend actually. What she does is a graphic design and then has it beaded. See all the beadwork? All pulled together into a great piece of art!

Merci: Any secrets you can share with us?

Wesley: When you come in here you're in a lounge like in a hotel or even your house. My events are residential in feel and a lot more comfortable, more-so then a typical lounge. We produce a mixed look. You can see how I've used lots of different furniture styles and directions to give it an eclectic feel. We haven't done a lot of traditional things but we've done a few things to relay back to tradition. Most of it is mid-century or closer in. We've added in spots of color you can see. We used pinks and corals to finish it out.

My inspiration was from the silk scarf and the colors were a recolored scarf that felt cool, the colorations of a costal feeling. The press uses it a lot because they come in and camp out. They really have liked and responded to it this year because I've separated the space so they feel they can get away. We've had lots of stars and celebrities and we just had a {New York} Giant, that was kind of fun to let him in - they were just all over him {outside}. He was just so wonderful, so down to earth, really comfortable here and grinning from ear to ear. That was kind of fun.

Merci: What do you want people to get out of the space? What do you want them to walk away feeling?

Wesley: It's something to talk about, to say this is so different from last year or could you just take this home and put it in my house? There are lots of things I want them to be excited, inspired, and really come away with something out of it. And they all do. Even the people who wouldn't normally comment come in from the somewhat blank space outside and it's like wow - this is really something!

I'm a creator of enviornments whether it's fashion week or a wedding. I take it my client wants to be comfortable. They want to come away feeling that this is a great space and return saying Mercedes Benz has treated me well and given me a wonderful space to lounge in between shows.

Merci: How does designing a VIP space differ from designing a wedding?
Wesley: There's always the functional approach. You're designing an event for larger numbers. My policy about a wedding is to make it as intimate as possible. Regardless if its 600 people or 50 people you want to make some sort of intimacy about the space. I always have additional seating, space to make you feel comfortable, that you can go to - that you are drawn into. Even if you can't sit because there are too many people you can at least visualize the space so you have a comfort feeling.

Merci: What makes a Wesley {designed} Wedding?

Wesley: We always manage weddings from the very beginning to the very end, often where my brides usually have moms who have known me before. They get engaged and it's like what do we do now? Where do we go next? They call me. I know even before the bridesmaids. We help them through the process. We handhold. We're a concierge service.

An event is just like theatre except there's no dress rehearsal. You're creating a set for something to happen. It's all really important. And you never know what's going to occur on stage. Whether you're doing it here {at MBFW} or at a wedding.

Sometimes they the brides don't know what they want. It's my job to help them figure it out. It's taking that bride where she wants to be in terms of the wedding. That's most important for me. And that we have fun and enjoy getting there - that it's a pleasurable experience. If I haven't done that, then I haven't done my job. That's the way I feel about it. I'm going to figure out how to make it work and keep the stress level down. For me that's a Wesley Wedding.

Camille is composed of beautiful delicate French veiling, adorned with French silver lace Preciosa pearls and sprinkled with tiny Swarowski crystals.
Okay, okay so I'm a little partial to the Jacqueline headpiece! But even if this piece were named mud I would be equally obsessed... The simple yet elegant birdcage veil is composed of beautiful handmade silk flowers with a nod to the 1930s style I absolutely adore. It's totally gorg for the style-focused bride.
The Vivian headpiece appeals so almost every bride... This headband is made from beautiful Edwardian lace and adorned with French silver lace and the softest mix of Preciosa pearls and crystals. It's absoltuely unique but still beautifully classic and chic.

The Devotion Project by Paul Labrecque | Expert Contributors

Happy Valentine's Day loves, and a warm welcome back to our expert beauty contributor, the ever-amazing Paul Labrecque.
While I am always thrilled to have Paul swing by Merci to talk tresses, I'm particularly honored to introduce him on this annual "Day of Love" to present a project that will captivate your heart as quickly as it did mine.
In the last few years, I've had the honor of getting to know Paul Labrecque and his partner, Brian Cantor. Independently, they each possess an indescribable quality that makes you instantly connect with them, a kindness that forgoes their lofty reputation and celebrity stylist status and puts you on a down-home level, whether it's the first time you set foot in their salons or if you've had the pleasure of being friends for ages...
But as beautiful and Paul and Brian are individually, together they create an energy that is absolutely magical. Even the most disconnected passerby in their salons can sense an almost tangible and kinetic connection between the pair, and it's this connection - this "better together" sense of love - that I'm honored to help introduce today. Today I wanted to share something with all of you that I am so proud to have been a part of. Have you heard of the Devotion Project? It is a lovely series of short documentary films celebrating LGBT couples of all kinds. The first film, MORE THAN EVER, premiered at Newfest: The New York Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in July 2011 and won the Audience Award for Best Short. The second film, SAY ONLY YES, premiered online this month and features me and my partner in business and in life, Brian!
Tony Osso, the series director, approached us nearly a year ago about his dream to create a series of short films about successful same sex relationships that could be used to help struggling teens and young people come to terms with their sexuality. We were flattered and excited to join in and we hope that our story can make a positive and lasting impression.

This is such an amazing series showing that love knows no bounds. We hope you enjoy it!

New York Fashion Week: Monique Lhuillier Fall 2012 | Merci Runway

J'adore, to die for, must-have: What do these terms have in common? Simple. They are words I'd use to describe Monique Lhuillier's Fall 2012 Ready to Wear line.
Every season we attend Monique Lhuillier's RTW and bridal shows, and every season we leave a little bit more in love. As you know, we have a penchant for all things Lhuillier wedding, but the magic behind Monique is that her style transcends beautifully to Ready to Wear as well... albeit with a few surprises.
Last September, we oohed and ahhed to Lhuillier's Spring 2012 ready-to-wear show as she introduced us to the familiar lace {very Lhuillier} and leather {not-so-Lhuillier} with bright, saturated color. It still embraced the designer's DNA, but hinted that she was getting comfortable stepping more and more outside her comfort zone - which she certainly did on Saturday.
Saturday's Fall 2012 runway mirrored a bolder, edgier line. Lhuillier showcased her signature structured feminine silhouettes with a dark and sexy twist...
Lhuillier kept the line romantic through familiar mediums of silk, tulle, and organza. Mixed with leather and dyed scarlet the couture felt scrumptiously sinister a la Alexander McQueen. The exquisitely glamorous looks were completed with gelled parts, cascading curls and sky high Manolo Blahniks.
The jumpsuit was a particular standout. Composed of noir stretch wool with leather detail and mesh teardrop. The unexpected pairing of wool, leather, and mesh made for a bold, innovative design.
The true show stopper was the finale piece, a red lace ball gown with an organza layered skirt {which we just had to make our headlining image}... We're sure to see the pieces showcased on red carpets throughout the season, though I wish they would simply make their way into my closet!

Real Wedding | Mary + Joe at The Landmark Loews Jersey City Theatre

With Valentine's Day around the corner, we just had to share the uber-romantic photographs from Mary & Joe's charming Jersey City wedding. The beaming newlyweds certainly channeled the glamour of old Hollywood romance at the spectacular Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre. {Hint: Make sure to check out Mary's shimmering red-soled Louboutins, an inadvertent, yet playful wink to the theatre's color palette}!

We feel like we haven't stopped smiling since photographer Alison Conklin shared the Mary and Joe's wedding with us and we're willing to bet you'll swoon too... enjoy!

Mary and Joe are the picture of fun. Opting to take public transit over a limo on their big day, they were certainly the talk of the ride!

Outfitted with soaring marble columns, gold leaf, grandiose chandeliers, bronze railings, plush carpets, and rich red tapestries {whew!}, the palace-like Landmark Theatre is absolutely opulent. The theatre celebrated its debut in 1929 and served as an unforgettable venue for for Mary and Joe to embark on their journey as husband and wife.

We are excited to announce that The Knot's Spring 2012 Fashion Issue has hit newsstands, and honored to share that little ol' Merci New York received their approving "link love" as a favorite bridal fashion blog alongside industry behemoths Kleinfeld and Wedding Channel.com. We are beyond blushing, actually... we're thrilled.

Real New York Wedding | Katie + Dan at Capitale

Greetings loves! We are positively giddy to share Katie and Dan's beautiful ceremony and reception held at Capitale New York. Katie and Dan's wedding oozes sophistication and incorporates their playful side with photographs that capture the raw beauty of both the couple and the city. Not only did always fabulous photographer Shira Weinberger captivate with detail, from serendipitous street signs to stunning shoes, she also indulged us with the nitty-gritty of Katie + Dan's big day. We're not sure which we love more: the dazzling details of the sensational soiree or the sweet romance of the newly wed high school sweethearts. We'll leave it up to you to decide...

Katie wore Kate Spade Karolina pumps and added adorable show clips to the already swoon-worthy shoe.

The Bridesmaid dresses were created with Sari material. Each dress was customized to fit the individual girl. The fabric created a uniform design pallete and the cut, a unique twist. {Helpful hint: If you are looking for other fashionable tips, definitely stock up on beauty coupons for the big day.}

The space is one of photographer, Shira Weinberger's favorite places to shoot. She shared her excitement and a bit of history on the venue, "The building was designed in 1893 during the City Beautiful Movement, and shares the Beaux-Arts tradition with other architectural gems such as Grand Central and the New York Public Library. Such grandeur is undeniably inspiring."

In high school we became close friends and in our junior year, while both on vacation with our families at the same hotel in Puerto Rico, he kissed me on the golf course overlooking the ocean. Two proms and three and a half years later, Dan graduated early from University of Michigan, moved into my studio dorm room at Barnard, and we've been inseparable since. This past November he proposed at the top of the Empire State building with the lights of the whole city surrounding us, and it was absolutely perfect."

For February, Christina traveled down south to the beautiful Lowcountry of Bluffton, South Carolina to give our readers an expert's viewpoint on gorgeous Inn at Palmetto Bluff. With my husband's family residing on nearby Hilton Head, it was so lovely to see the david beahm destinations executive director's view on an area that is near and dear to our hearts... With the election year upon us, I’ve been feeling downright patriotic of late! And in case you’ve forgotten my dear Merci readers, having a destination wedding does not necessarily mean you and your loved ones must break out your passports. There are a plethora of domestic properties that will make you feel as though you’ve whisked your guests to a world away, when really, you are in our own red, white, and blue backyard {and supporting a local economy along the way}.
One of my very favorite places is located in the heart of the American South – in the Lowcountry of Bluffton, South Carolina. A chameleon of sorts, this jewel features a special breed of hospitality where black-tie formality meets down-home shrimp and grits. So let me get a move on, and introduce y’all to a shining star of the South: The Inn at Palmetto Bluff.
Your journey begins in Bluffton when you embark upon a five-mile drive lined with 100 year old oak trees laden with softly billowing Spanish moss. The locals refer to this drive as “the world’s largest decompression chamber,” hinting at what awaits when you cross a charming bridge into the intimate village of the Inn at Palmetto Bluff. Don’t let the word “Inn” fool you – there is no singular hotel per se, in fact, just the opposite...The “Inn” is comprised of a series of fifty individual cottages, each embodying iconic Lowcountry architecture with large screened-in porches that boast views of the May River and interior islands. In my opinion, there is nothing in the world as sweet as listening to a rain shower punctuate the metal roofs of these bungalows. It almost seems to keep rhythm with the beat of one’s heart. In addition to the cottages primed for romance, the Inn also offers elegant, two, three, and four bedroom Village homes that are perfectly suited for families and provide all the hotel amenities available in the cottages.So just how does one achieve the perfect amalgamation of wedding formality with Southern hospitality? Well, we believe that any event on this property has to begin with an Oyster Roast, Pig Pickin’ & Lowcountry Boil! There will certainly be enough time for seersucker suits and Chantilly lace gowns the following day, but allow your guests the delight of donning their Levi’s and throwin’ on their best pair of Tony Lama’s on their first evening here.On the banks of the May River, at an area called Moreland Landing: a rustic island pavilion (that also happens to feature a five story tree house), your guests will delight in shucking their own oysters and diving into fried green ‘maters, collard greens, and peach cobbler with whiskey cream. Add a blue grass band, some ice cold beer, sprightly wild flowers in mason jars and some twinkling amber carnival lights and you’ve got a vivacious party that will leave your guests wondering just what waits in store the following night.When it comes to the big day, there is nothing more quaint and romantic than the poetically simple, white, Waterside chapel. The rear wall of the chapel features a grand arched window that offers your guests gorgeous views of the river, all the while providing a picturesque backdrop to your vows. As you are pronounced married, the joyous tones of a gospel choir erupt from the bank of the river: a jubilant celebration of the Gullah heritage that has come to help define this area of the United States.After you receive warm congratulations from guests on the Village Green under the ancient oak trees, your reception will await in the ballroom and wraparound porches of the adjacent River House. It’s a bit difficult to trump the romance of flickering gas lamps and a crackling fireplace, but when it comes to the décor of a Southern wedding, we love reflecting the area in the floral décor. Big, showy, native branches such as magnolia, camellia and dogwood make for cost-effective visual impact, all the while honoring the local flora.For regular Merci readers, y’all know that I do love to suggest a great guest gift idea for each location the Beahm team travels. One of my absolute favorite things in this world is meeting new brides. I love hearing about their wedding vision. I'm truly curious about how their planning process is going. And of course, as a bridal fashion stylist, I adore learning about their personal style and how it might weave it into their day.
Fortunately, I get to talk about all these things for a living. And even more fortunately, I was able to talk about them all day long while exhibiting Merci New York's styling services at The Wedding Party Event.
We've been buzzing about The Wedding Party for weeks on Merci, and for good reason... The annual event is truly one of the best in bridal. Hosted by our friends at Martha Stewart Weddings and The Wedding Library, it brings out the most stylish vendors in New York City and beyond, so you can image how thrilled I was to participate in such a stellar event - First as Style Editor for the hosts, and second, as owner of our namesake bridal fashion styling company!
Our Merci New York booth was designed as almost a dressing room or boudoir for the bride. I wanted a chic little nook to share the beautiful stylist-endorsed accessories we promote in our Style Shop, but also a cozy little enclave to chat about a myriad of fashion styling services offered through Merci New York. {From day-of bridal styling, to wedding dress shopping, accessories styling and engagement shoot production - we certainly have the stylish NYC bride covered}!
The beautiful flowers that graced our table were designed by Blade Floral and Event Design. Owner Anne Kilcullen has a beautiful eye, and picked the most stunning blooms that not only complimented the accessories we carry, but also coordinated back to our soft color palette. As I am sure you can imagine from all the amazing buzz leading up to the big day, the 2012 Wedding Party Event was absolutely wonderful, thanks to the collaborative energy of amazing vendors, fantastic brides, and of course, event hosts Claudia Hanlin of The Wedding Library and Martha Stewart Weddings...
Merci New York had the pleasure of not only exhibiting our bridal fashion styling services {more on that later}, but also walking the show at the New York Palace and interacting with all the wonderful goings-on as the event's Style Editor. Wow, it's been a whirlwind here at Merci New York... and somehow in the process of styling some majorly fun clients, working on wedding shows, and many, {many} meetings, we forgot to share something that absolutely knocked our socks off: A wonderful mention in the New York Times Style Section in a fabulous article on bridal fashion.
You can imagine how thrilled I was to open the Sunday New York Times and see this article... And not just because I contributed to it. It's just amazing to see the media reinforcing that bridal "rules" are changing, and that a bride's wedding fashion should dictated - first and foremost - by her personal style.

Real NYC Engagement Session | Anna + Matt in the West Village

Recently Rebekah, one half of husband and wife photography team Kallima Photography, contacted Merci New York with a real NYC engagement session that was two years in the making. Bride-to-be Anna was stranded in the Netherlands, yearning to get back to NYC and be with her fiance, Matt... Kallima Photography planned the engagement session over emails, and eagerly awaited the couple's reunion...
As we expected, the resulting engagement session were pure and fun, packed with city-centric details such as an iconic yellow taxi cab, and the High Line's bustling cityscape... Take a moment, or a few, and enjoy the breathtaking photographs of lovebirds Anna + Matt.
