The five man group from Youngstown State University, directed by Dr. Glenn Schaft, presented several compositions that showcased a wide variety of percussion instruments. The group’s purpose is “to inspire young audiences and help them understand the universal elements of musical communication as well as the experience of rhythm as movement, music as a communal activity, and the beauty, simplicity, and appeal of percussion instruments from around the world.”

Steps. At the conclusion of his performance, he handed pledge cards out so the students could have a list of the steps to keep on hand to remind them how to deal with bullies. More information about Mr. Dixon’s program can be found at http://www.bullyfreeschools.com/.

On Friday afternoon, March 13, Maplewood Elementary students got “fired up” to take the PSSA in a special assembly held in their honor. While the whole school staff and grades K-2 assembled in the gym, grades 3 through 6 waited their turn in the auditorium to be introduced. As each grade was introduced, they ran into the gym through a human “tunnel” and burst through a paper banner while inspirational music blared over the sound system.

After each grade was introduced, two MHS students spoke some words of encouragement and gave some tips for taking the test. Finally, Mr. Cokain addressed the group and explained the testing format, encouraged them to get plenty of rest, and inspired them to do their best.
