Medical experts in India oppose the asbestos from Canada for export to developing countries

Medical experts in New Delhi have called Canada continues to export asbestos to developing countries "criminal" and warn that asbestos kills workers in India. The head of India and the business environment of the department, Dr TK Joshi, reports that millions of construction workers and at least one hundred thousand workers at the plant were exposed to asbestos all days in India. Workers are often not provided with masks by their employers and who are not in a position to demand. Most cases of deaths related to asbestos in India go unreported and almost no pay. Asbestos is used in India to make a variety of products for concrete pipes of the metal roof, and one-third of the asbestos comes from Canada, the rest is imported from Zimbabwe, Russia and Kazakhstan. Dr Joshi calls on the Canadian government to stop the export of asbestos to stop exporting "misery" and to oppose the use of asbestos anywhere in the world.

Hi everyone,

This is the newest issue that appears in Mesothelioma situation. Regarding to the mesothelioma news, the issue -"New research shows baseline
CT screen helps detect early stage lung cancer in people at high risk because of asbestos exposure" were reported at 28th November 2007. I'm continuing my reading to the main source of this issue at The Oncologist. It was told that Italian researches have found a new method to prevent lung cancer especially in mesothelioma. It's also reported CT ( computed tomography ) screening of persons exposed to asbestos is useful for the detection of early lung cancer.

As we known, this issue certainly will be good news for mesothelioma patient or people with a history of
asbestos exposure. People who are consequently at high risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer will get a change to be healthy and prevent themselves from these diseases early. At the end of the day, it should increase the action of Mesothelioma prevention and improving the quality of life.
It’s too difficult for me to give more elaboration about this issue because I’m not a doctor or specialist into that way. But, I’m really happy to share and spread it in this blog and hoping that people who are suffering of mesothelioma will get a better life.

“Over 1,000 persons enrolled in a surveillance program for asbestos-exposed workers participated in this program. The median duration of exposure to asbestos was 30 years, and the median age was 58 years. Sixty-six percent of participants were smokers with a median of 18.5 pack years. Results of CT were compared to routine chest X-rays. Eight-hundred thirty-four non-calcified nodules were detected in 44% of participants on initial CT compared to 43 nodules in 4% of participants by chest X-ray. There were nine cases of lung cancer detected by CT and none by chest X-ray. Eight lung cancers were Stage I and one was Stage IIA and all were treated with potentially curative surgery. In addition, one person had a thymic carcinoid detected by CT. There were 11 false positive results. No cases of mesothelioma were detected in this study.”

Differences Between Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer

Hi everyone,

This is a new thing and it is very important to know. Actually Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer is not a same disease. Although mesothelioma and lung cancer are both serious illnesses, there are differences between of them. After I known this issue, I have trying to get more info about Mesothelioma and Lung cancer. It is really weird for me. As I was known, Mesothelioma is a diffuse malignancy. One of Mesothelioma types is Pleural mesothelioma – It is also called “asbestos lung cancer” – and it is really not a form of lung cancer, but a cancer of the lining that surrounds the lung.

Okay, I’m not sure whether you are interested or not. But it was gave me a new knowledge. When I’m reading this issue in one of that site, I have got the main difference between lung cancer and mesothelioma. The difference is that lung cancer is in the tissue of the lung. By the way, pleural mesothelioma occurs in the lining around the lung. Is it right?

How is about Lung Cancer? Actually Lung cancer works differently. I don’t know how to elaborate it because my languange is too limited. So, I’m just took these informative sentences and wrote here:

Lung cancer works differently. It arises within the lungs themselves and is characterized by individualized tumor masses. Even for people with multiple masses, the tumors generally possess clear boundaries. The tumors can grow quite large and in its late stages and most aggressive forms, lung cancer is just as deadly as mesothelioma. However, it is much more amenable to treatment than mesothelioma is. Because of the individualized natures of its tumors, it is possible to completely remove all visible malignant tissue. Chemotherapy and radiation are more effective treatment modalities as well. None of this is to say that lung cancer is not a serious diagnosis, because it is a deadly serious disease. It is simply to draw a clear difference between lung cancer and mesothelioma.

In fact, there is another difference between Lung cancer and mesothelioma lung cancer. Huh, I don’t think so. Loll...Anyway; it’s still a reality situation that asbestos exposure is a causative factor for mesothelioma while lung cancer can be caused by other agents like cigarette smoking. The differences are related to the symptom or causes of this disease.

Hi everyone,

It’s taking a long time for me to write back here (Mesothelioma Lung Cancer Blog). I have to complete my task before get back to my town. At the same time I have to repair my laptop. However, it’s had done and I have a lot of time right now to write and sharing any new info about Mesothelioma around the world.

This is a simple question but the answer is not. I’m tried to understand about the simple step that mesothelioma being diagnosed. So, searching on Google is a simple and your first step. After that, we will found the answer.hehe...So how the mesothelioma is diagnosed? Refer to one of website that I’ve visit, the diagnosis of the mesothelioma is often difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a certain number of other conditions. I’m just simplify all off this article by doing a short phrase

Hi everyone.. It’s too long not to write here. Actually I’m really busy with my final exam. So, I don’t have a lot of time to make any post here. I’m just searching for anything news about Mesothelioma lung cancer and one of issues has attracted me so much. It’s really a fact that you have to know. Based on several comment here, I’m know that Mesothelioma lung cancer is really dangerous and its effect too many people at the west.

Regarding to this blog "Mesothelioma Resource Centre ".I've found there is the "new wave" of Australian asbestos victim...An article also announced on news.com .au declares that Australia sees a new wave of the women of asbestos victims…, in particular of young women. According to the article, this alleged “third wave” of the asbestos victims includes these women whom “played around their parents' feet while walls were torn to the bottom and the prolongations at the house of family built.” Of the decades later, these now-means-old women are diagnosed with the mesothelioma lung cancer and other diseases connected by asbestos. Obviously it's too dangerous

Regarding to Forbes, more than $1million spend for a lung cancer patient to get an extra year of life, but overall survival from the disease hasn't increased significantly. Its not a small budget. Actually, the outcome of Health Care for this disease ( Lung Cancer ) is not significantly with their medical cost.

As the medical officers said, Lung cancer still remains the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. This year 160,390 Americans will die from the disease. From a survey,The researchers found that an additional year of life for a patient with lung cancer cost an average of $403,142. The cost of each additional year of survival for people with local disease was $143,614. For people with metastatic lung cancer, each year of additional survival cost $1,190,322, Woodward's team found.

Each in the United States, more than $5 billion is spent on detecting, diagnosing and treating lung cancer. However, the one-year survival rate from the disease has increased only 5 percent from the late 1970s to 2002, the researchers noted -- between 1975 to 1979 the one-year survival rate for lung cancer patients was 37 percent and, in 2002, it was 42 percent, they said.

This is a wasted health care. Although it can cost more dollars, the outcome of this way are not significant. We are able to control this situation if we aware about this disease's dangerous and it's medical cost. Im agry with an opinion of one of medical officer in this news. He said the government should spend more money to prevent smoking" and this is the most cost-effective way of bringing lung cancer costs under control.

A new report from the nation’s leading cancer organizations shows cancer death rates decreased on average 2.1 percent per year from 2002 through 2004, nearly twice the annual decrease of 1.1 percent per year from 1993 through 2002. So, this is a good news for everyone and it shown the succesfull progress in the fight against cancer. Among the types of cancer, there are the three leading causes of cancer deaths in men: lung, prostate and colorectal cancers. In women, deaths rates from colorectal cancer and breast cancer decreased, while the rate of increase for lung cancer deaths slowed substantially.

Unfortunately, The death rate for mesothelioma, an extremely painful cancer in which membrane cells lining the chest or abdomen become malignant and proliferate uncontrollably, is on the rise. ( source : Diane Miletto )

The Author said that the fund for mesothelioma only less than 3 percent of cancer research dollars. So, the governement should spend more to Mesothelioma Research because not all cancers or cancer death rates are on the decline.

Asbestos is the single biggest work place killer today। People who have worked with the material are at serious risk from developing lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, fatal respiratory illnesses that debilitate their victims। Evidence of asbestos’ deadly effect on those who breathe its fibres is likely to multiply in the decades to come.Asbestos was once heralded as the greatest building material available to those in the construction industries. Its high tensile strength, durability and flexibility, as well as heat insulation and fire retardant properties meant that it could save lives, make buildings strong and make industries rich. It was first used by the Greeks some 2000 years ago. They were aware of the health hazards it posed but believed that its magical ability to withstand fire far outweighed this danger.The dangers to health were all but ‘forgotten’ until at the turn of the twentieth century when medical researchers noticed a large number of deaths and lung problems occurring in asbestos mining towns. In 1917 and 1918, several United States studies discovered that asbestos workers were dying unnaturally young.

Asbestosis was first diagnosed in a 33 year old woman in 1924, this lead to studies being carried out on asbestos workers in the UK। Examinations on the workers showed that thirty percent had asbestos-related lung disease. UK laws were introduced in 1931 to increase ventilation and to make asbestosis an identifiable work related illness.

Despite the established link between asbestos and lung diseases the industry continued to grow well into the last century। At the peak of its usage asbestos was produced in 24 countries worldwide; it was also manufactured in over 100. World production climaxed at over 5 million tonnes. The building, shipping, insulation and demolition companies whose workers came into contact with asbestos were often aware that their staff were at risk. They did not take sufficient steps to protect their workforce from personal injury.

Sadly the effects of asbestos take many years to manifest themselves। People who worked in the construction industries some 20 to 40 years ago may still be awaiting their fate. Asbestos causes several diseases, two of which occur only in those who have had contact with asbestos, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Lung cancer and emphysema are more commonly associated with smoking but frequently occur in non smokers with a history of asbestos contact.

It is thought that the worst is yet to come। The peak of asbestos usage was in the 60’s and 70’s so many people may develop lung diseases in the near future.

Due to the latency of asbestos diseases it is thought that we will be seeing many more incidences of mesothelioma in the next 25 years। Hugh Robertson, head of health and safety at the British TUC says: "A realistic estimate is that within the EU alone 500,000 will die in the next 35 years, half from mesothelioma and half from lung cancer. In Japan, an estimated 100,000 will die. If you add the Australian, Canadian and US figures then even a million is an under estimation – and that is only for the developed countries.”

DO NOT force yourself to eat if you are nauseated
If you feel nauseated, choose foods that are easy on the stomach—bland foods such as dry crackers, for instance
Eat frequent small snacks or meals rather than three large meals daily
Add extra calories and protein to food and try nutritional supplements for convenience
Cut back on fluids with meals
Select foods that are cold or at room temperature
Ask someone else to prepare your meals if you are nauseated or vomiting
Eat more on the days—or at the time of day—that you feel better and your appetite is good

Chemotherapy AND Alimta ?

The most common use for chemotherapy in mesothelioma patients, is as an option for those who are not surgical candidates, however, various cancer centers are now conducting trials using the neoadjuvant approach. Alimta (pemetrexed) is a new drug recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use with Cisplatin in the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma whose disease is either unresectable or who are not candidates for curative surgery. Alimta is the first drug approval specific to mesothelioma.

The Alimta/Cisplatin chemotherapy regimen is the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment specifically for malignant pleural mesothelioma. This is currently considered the most effective first-line treatment for mesothelioma patients who are not surgical candidates. A multi-targeted antifolate drug, Alimta works by blocking the enzymes necessary for DNA copying and cell division. During the clinical trial process, Alimta/Cisplatin improved median survival for pleural mesothelioma patients by approximately three months over treatment with Cisplatin as a single agent.

As with any medical treatment, it is important to discuss the use of Alimta with your doctor. This conversation should include all pertinent information regarding effectiveness, administration and possible side effects of the drug combination. It is also important to begin vitamin supplementation of B12 by injection during the week prior to treatment (to be repeated every 9 weeks), and folic acid by mouth daily (to be continued until 21 days after the last cycle of Alimta). Additionally, you will be given an oral steroid medication to minimize the risk of skin rash or other possible side effects. Your doctor will have information on the correct dosages of each medication. Be sure to tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking (including non-prescription drugs) so he may be aware of any adverse interactions.

Alimta/Cisplatin is administered to patients on an outpatient basis every 21 days. This cycle of treatment involves a 10-minute IV infusion of Alimta followed by a 2 hour infusion of Cisplatin. How many cycles of treatment you receive will be dependent on your response rate to the drug (regression of the tumor or halt to progression of the disease) and the side effects you might experience.

Side effects of Alimta/Cisplatin are mild to moderate for most mesothelioma patients, i.e., nausea, vomiting and fatigue, and can usually be managed by your doctor. For some patients, however, side effects may be debilitating, and may require a decrease in dosage or removal from the program. All potential side effects should be mentioned to your doctor. Never assume any complaint is minor.

Chemotherapy may be used to achieve different goals, depending on the stage of the cancer at the time of diagnosis and the age and health of the patient. Since chemotherapy for mesothelioma is not considered "curative", the goal is:

To control the cancer by stopping its spread or slowing its growth.
To shrink tumors prior to other treatments, such as surgery. This is called neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
To destroy microscopic disease which may remain after surgery. This is called adjuvant chemotherapy.
To relieve symptoms, such as pain. This is called palliative chemotherapy, and is given in cases when a drastic reduction in the tumor is not expected.

Potentially Curative Procedures

These procedures are performed with "curative intent". Their goal is removal of all gross disease, with the knowledge that microscopic disease will most likely remain. Adjuvant therapy (another form of treatment in addition to the primary therapy) is typically aimed at eliminating residual disease.

For Pleural Mesothelioma:

Pleurectomy/Decortication is usually performed on patients with early stage disease (Stage I and selected Stage II), and attempts to remove all gross tumor. If it is found that all tumor can not be removed without removing the lung, this may be done at the same time and is called pneumonectomy.
Extrapleural Pneumonectomy is considerably more radical than other surgical approaches, and should be carried out by surgeons with great expertise in evaluating patients and performing the procedure itself. Because in the past surgery alone has failed to effect a cure, or even to help prolong life for any extended period of time, it is currently being combined with traditional chemotherapy and/or radiation, or other new approaches such as gene therapy, immunotherapy or photodynamic therapy.

For Peritoneal Mesothelioma:

Cytoreductive Surgery is aimed at removing all or nearly all of the gross or visible tumor in the peritoneal cavity. In order to treat any remaining cancer cells, Intra-Peritoneal Hyperthermic (heated) Chemotherapy (IPHC) is then delivered to the abdominal cavity. The type of chemotherapy drug used may vary according to the physician’s preference.

Treatment-Surgery ( Palliative Procedures )

Palliative Procedures

Palliative surgical procedures are those which treat a symptom of mesothelioma, without aggressively treating the disease itself.

Chest Tube Drainage and Pleurodesis is considered the most common of palliative treatments. Fluid build-up, or pleural effusion, is most often the first symptom which will prompt mesothelioma patients to seek medical attention. Once this effusion has occurred, it is many times persistent, returning rapidly after initial thoracentesis (draining of the fluid). In order to eliminate this problem, the pleural space must be closed. This is accomplished by use of a talc slurry or other sclerosing agent which produces an adhesion.
Thoracoscopy and Pleurodesis is done in conjunction with VATS using a powdered form of talc versus talc slurry. Both this and chest tube drainage and pleurodesis will be only effective if there is no tumor encasing the lung which restricts its expansion.
Pleuroperitoneal Shunt plays a limited role in palliation for several reasons. It involves placement of a catheter run under the skin from the pleural to the peritoneal cavity. Obstruction of the catheter and possible seeding of the tumor into the abdominal cavity may be concerns.
Pleurectomy, used as a palliative procedure, may be performed where more extensive surgery is not an option. In these cases, it is understood that all visible or gross tumor will not be removed. It is considered the most effective means of controlling pleural effusion in cases where the lung's expansion is restricted by disease.

Recently a new test has been approved by the FDA to monitor patients who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. The Meso-mark assay is an in-vitro test that monitors levels of the biomarker mesothelin, the concentration of which is proportional to the size of the tumor allowing physicians to monitor existing tumors, patient response to therapy, effectiveness of treatment, and possible recurrences.

Diagnostic Procedures

A diagnosis of mesothelioma from fluid is many times inconclusive. Given this fact, diagnostic surgery becomes a necessary next step in confirming and staging mesothelioma.
There are four different type of prsedures:
Thoracoscopy enables a physician to evaluate the pleural cavity and to conduct multiple tissue biopsies under direct vision. In up to 98% of cases, a definitive diagnosis can be obtained. Often, chemical pleurodesis aimed at relieving the accumulation of fluid in the intrapleural space, can be accomplished during the same procedure. It is also possible to gauge the extent of the tumor, and make a determination of surgical resectability. While less invasive than an open biopsy, it can only be performed on patients where tumor has not obliterated the pleural space.
VATS, or video-assisted thoracic surgery is an alternative to thoracoscopy, although because of its more invasive nature, concerns of tumor seeding increase. By utilizing small incisions, the physician can view the pleural space with the assistance of a camera, and obtain sufficient tissue samples for analysis by a pathologist. Extent of the tumor (i.e., pleural involvement, chest wall invasion) may also determined, and recommendation as to the type of debulking procedure necessary can be made at this time.
Mediastinoscopy is sometimes used as an aid in staging extent of disease when enlarged nodes are seen using imaging techniques.
Laproscopy is used in mesothelioma patients in cases where imaging techniques suggest possible invasion of the tumor through the diaphragm. This information can be important in evaluating a patient for potential pleurectomy or extrapleural pneumonectomy.
