Contemporary Dance Music from the USA which has just too much elements of Dub and Reggae to ignore.

Then we've got our last MP3 from Nucleus Roots, a Dub and Reggae collective from the UK which should get much more recognition than it currently gets.

And thirdly, the new Dancehall phenomenon Vybz Kartel, whose brand new release "Pon Di Gaza" was featured in the Dubroom in the form of a couple of free and legal MP3's.

Reggae surely came from a long way, and the music is not about to turn dead either!

One Love, Give Thanks,
Messian Dread (Dubroom Webmaster)

The above column is the personal opinnion of the Webmaster and does not neccesarily reflect the contents of the Dubroom Website and/or Message Boards and/or Weblogs.

ITEMS FOR THIS EDITION:

BEAT PHARMACY - ROOFTOPS (DUBROOM ONLINE MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, November 6 2009 - US based "Beat Pharmacy" would classify as Dance Music, but "Rooftops" stands out very well as neccesary addition to the collector of DUB and derivatives... The Dub is crucial, the music is too, and the fact that Ticklah comes from the US says a thing there.

While in America, I witnessed how different the musical styles and preferences are when it comes to Reggae Music. I witnessed how Dub is still to rise up in ways that the style has already achieved in Europe, especially the UK although France is a good second.

However, with engineers like Ticklah and the Canadian based Dubmatix, I do foresee the possibility that in an overseeable future, Dub could very well claim it's place in the North American continent.

Will there ever be such a thing as a clear, distinctive style of Dub like UK DUB? Just recently, I was thankful to close that period as taking airplanes is not really one of my favorite occupations.

I hadn't really scheduled this, because at the moment this all started I was also engaged in building the Dubroom Studio. There's material here which will enable us to record live play by artists, one of which is a crucial electronic drum kit, a Roland drums from the V-series.

This kit triggered me to take up on an old habit which is to play drums. I hadn't played drums for years, kinda stopped doing it in the early 1990's, but for some reason I'm driven to take the drum sticks again and beat the rust out of my body.

EDI FITZROY - HOLD THE VIBES (DUBROOM ONLINE MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, November 1 2009 - With the right echo's on the right place, a solid bassline that many will recognize, crucial lyrics sung in Edi Fitzroy's very own individual style, Holding the Vibes won't be too hard.

NUCLEUS ROOTS - LIFE (DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 2009 - Lot's of phasers on this upfull Steppers rhythm by the UK based Roots and Dub collective. A love for (DUB) Reggae and Consciousness, shared by countless others.

Almost everything on this website is offered free of charge, sections of the Dubroom like the MP3 portal serve both listeners and label in this Musical Culture called Reggae, a Culture rather than a business because to promote (DUB) Reggae is, in the end, to promote the sufferers who originated the music and dominate it until this very day.

Anyway, I needed to share a little bit, these last days, about just what drove me to start the Dubroom and keep maintaining it throughout these last 12 years and -Jah willing- years to come.

BITTY MC LEAN - THE REAL THING (DUBROOM ONLINE MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 28 2009 - It was his first release on Sly and Robbie's Taxi Label and was received very well: Bitty Mc Lean's "The Real Thing" has every element you'd expect from the Riddim Twins, their band, and their studio.

NUCLEUS ROOTS - FOOL'S PARADISE (DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 2009 - In a One Drop Style, Nucleus Roots describes living inna Babylon. It's still this love that keeps me doing what I do, so it's not so far stretched to call the Dubroom a labour of love.

Reggae Music has taught me a lot throughout life. Bible quotes, insightful lyrics, musical vibrations that enter where no other music can touch my heart and soul, et cetera.

Unlike some folks, it is simply impossible for me to separate the music from the lyrics and therefore I do take the lyrics very serious.

This is why the Dubroom has several research projects wherein, if you will, footnotes are added to many Reggae lyrics. I hope you don't mind that Jah Willing, the next days I'll use my column to explain a little bit just why the Dubroom is the site that it is.

The reason for that is that I've seen some rather confusing speculations, basically giving the idea that the Dubroom's aim is to make money or at least to increase traffic at any cost.

However, neither money nor traffic drives me to maintain the Dubroom. What drives me is love, love for (DUB) Reggae Music and love for the consciousness that people can get when they listen to Reggae Music with an open heart and mind.

Even though there are many things outright wrong in Reggaeland, and even though it's possible to have endless debates as to what exactly is Consciousness, I do love (DUB) Reggae and Consciousness and that made me start the Dubroom in 1997.

TYRONE TAYLOR - JAH JAH I AM CALLING YOU (DUBROOM ONLINE MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 26 2009 - In Reggae Music, it is common to make variations on a musical theme. When new pages are added in the tempo that it currently is done, we should reach the 150 by the end of this year.

That's not all that needs to be done on the site, though.

As the MP3's are flooding in, everything has to be properly linked to in the MP3 portal. The download pages need links to other recommended tracks, and more.

Then there is the Video portal. Today, Dubroom Online features a fresh Dub that I mixed just yesterday. I didn't make the riddim yesterday, though. That was a couple of months ago.

It's the first Dub I was able to mix after quite a while. Time-consuming events which equally caused a lot of stress and uncertainty simply prevented me from actively touching the musical atmosphere.

In a way, the Dub is actually quite personal, if you will, as I worked out a lot of emotions in the mixing, emotions I had to deal with within myself these last months as my spiritual journey came into a next phase.

I hope that you like the release as much as I enjoyed mixing it, it's made with a lot joy in an Ire atmosphere while giving thanks and praise to the Most High Jah!

MESSIAN DREAD - DUB INNA THIS TIME (DUBROOM STAR SELECTIONS RELEASE)

WWW, October 2009 - You could call this a very personal tune, as a lot of emotions are put in the mix. The only problem actually is, where to host the Podcast.

Whatever the case, Jah Willing I will find a place to put the podcasts online and start broadcasting again even though I doubt it will be before the end of this year.

VIBRONICS - ZION-I (DUBROOM ONLINE MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 22 2009 - In case you didn't know: there's hardly a Vibronics track that can not be described using all kinds of superlatives. Go Deh!

NADINE SUTHERLAND - REMEDY (DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 2009 - Nadine Sutherland has the remedy: it's a pumping One Drop drums and ditto bassline, echo's here and there everything in a very acceptable tempo. Not for nothing the title track of her excellent release on Eight76 Records.

GLEN BROWN (DUBROOM ARTIST PAGE)

WWW, October 2009 - They called him the "Rhythm Master", because of his strong productions. His close collaboration with King Tubby's the God Father of DUB was definitely an influential part in this. Financial problems, however, disabled him from pressing his material on the wide scale it deserved.

Since then, a number of bands with that very same name have come to the surface as well. There's one in Australia and one in the USA, and that's not all.

A problem with this?

I don't have one...

I just know and believe, that if you call yourself Jah Roots, you do give yourself the responsibility to actually live up to that name and not use it for "cultural" reasons.

Like Burning Spear sings: "I will always remember my roots, strong roots, Jah roots".

GLEN WASHINGTON - CAN'T YOU SEE (DUBROOM ONLINE MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 18 2009 - Just can't ignore this heartical and upfull tune by Glen Washington: it has everything to make a positive and happy vibe for the Righteous Lovers among us. And for the rest of us, too.

NADINE SUTHERLAND - CALL MY NAME (DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, October 2009 - With a very surprising Spanish guitar on top of the riddim, Nadine Sutherland once again showcases her skilled voice. Reggae purists might not apprecilove this one to the max, though...

DUBROOM DRUMS 0.1 (DUBROOM DRUM LOOP)

WWW, October 2009 - This drum loop is a Steppers rhythm at 133 BPM, both in WAV and DR. REX format. The loop comes in three parts: one with an intro-break, one with a break in the rhythm, and one with the rhythm itself.

It is a first try on what could possibly become an interesting pack of drum loops at a later stage.

CREATION REBEL (DUBROOM ARTIST PAGE)

WWW, October 2009 - Part of Adrian Sherwood's On-U label, Creation Rebel released their first (Dub) album in 1978. They're also known as The Arabs as they backed up Prince Far I on his On-U releases. Fat bass, intelligent Dub, timeless and priceless.
