The Maidens were there to get the lowdown and check out his “muscle car” (see the picture above). We also wanted to know what makes him tick… he loves traveling, moto, tattoos, snowboarding and art. The Star Valli Yamaha Rockstar Metal Mulisha team took on the opening round of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship series at Hangtown over the weekend. Kyle Cunningham was the top finisher in the super-competitive 250 class. Cunningham turned in a strong performance, notching two top-10 moto results – a ninth and an eighth – to finish the day in seventh overall.

“I didn’t get a good start in the first moto, but I rode a decent race. In the second moto, I was feeling good, but I caught my foot in a rut and I struggled through the last half of the race. We got two top-10 finishes and we’re still in the hunt with a lot of races to go. Now we go to Texas, which is where I live, and it’s going to be a hot one. The track is pretty difficult too, so it should make for some good racing.” – Cunningham.

Star Valli Yamaha teammate Gareth Swanepoel returned to racing this weekend after missing the final few rounds of Supercross due to illness. Trying to get back into his groove, Swanepoel struggled but then rallied; the South African finished 12th and 15th in his motos to take 14th overall.

“Today was OK but I kept crashing in practice. In the first moto, my start was decent and I managed to hang on for 12th. In the second moto, my start was not so good and I was 15th. It was disappointing, but I’ve only been back on the bike for two weeks, so I can’t expect too much. I just tried to limit the damage and will build from this for Texas.” – Swanepoel

Finally, Star Valli Yamaha’s Kyle Peters started out strong in the first moto and was dicing with the frontrunners. Within a few laps, however, the rookie lost several spots but still held on for 11th. In the second moto, he had some issues and finished 30th. Overall, Peters finished 17th.

In the premier 450 class, Star Valli Yamaha’s Nico Izzi enjoyed a noteworthy debut, capturing an impressive 10th-place finish overall, thanks to well-earned 11th- and 10th-place moto results.

“Hangtown was a little rough on me. I rode well, but I went down in both motos. In the first, I went down on the first lap but I rode hard and came back to 11th. In the second moto, I was in seventh but I went off the track and got T-boned trying to come back and went down again. But I ended up 10th, so I know I’ve got the speed. I just need to be a little smarter. Texas is going to be tough, we’ll have to prepare ourselves and come out with our guns loaded and hope for the best. That’s all you can do.” – Izzi

Star Valli Yamaha teammate Bobby Kiniry put in a solid performance in the 450 class, turning in consistent laps on the daunting Hangtown track. Kiniry finished 12th in the first moto and 13th in the second to take 12th overall for the day.

“I’ve never really had a good result at Hangtown. But the Rockstar Yamaha got me through the day. I got terrible starts, but I worked my way up, and stayed strong and put myself in contention for top-10 points. I got out safe and learned some things about my bike and about myself. I know I’m strong and I’m looking forward to Texas. I believe I can be in the top five and that’s what we’re shooting for. The hotter and rougher and gnarlier it is, the better I do. I’ve shown that throughout the years, and I’ve got the results to back that up.” – Kiniry

Star Valli Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes moved up to the 450 class at Hangtown, and realized he needed to lift his game to be competitive. Sipes had some issues in the first moto and finished 25th, but he redoubled his efforts in the second moto to finish 15th. Combined, these results were good for 18th overall.

“Hangtown was a rough weekend for me. Practice didn’t go well and I just couldn’t get going, so that gave me a bad gate pick. In the first moto, I kind of hit a wall, mentally. I just couldn’t get going. In the second moto, I rode pretty well, and I came through the pack after a terrible start. I’ve definitely got a few things to work on. Texas will be hot but I’ll be ready for it, it’ll be good.” – Sipes

The Rockstar Metal Mulisha FMX team and Jimmy Fitzpatrick are once again laying out the ramps at the Temecula Balloon & Wine Festival on June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd! Fitzpatrick and the team will be gearing up and going ramp-to-ramp with a huge list of tricks for all you wino’s, so get ready for one hell of a show!

Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha Racer, Luke Styke claimed his second round win and fourth consecutive podium with a dominant performance at round four of the MX Nationals held at Wanneroo, WA, last weekend.

Styke has been a revelation in season 2012 and continues to impress with his new found speed, skill, determination and work ethic. The Wanneroo round tests all those aspects of a rider and Styke came through with flying colors to take the round win and move 39 points clear in the championship chase.

Posting the second fastest lap time in qualifying, Styke knew he had the speed to run at the front and he immediately got to work in race one and two in the back to back moto’s and took the win in both moto’s and set up his day.

Moto three saw Styke take a mature approach allowing the race to unfold and settle into a groove that he could sustain for the full 14 laps and secure the all-important round win. He moved into fourth place with a few laps remaining and that was more than enough to stand atop of the podium on a day that really challenges all riders.

“I really like racing in sand but it is always hard work when we race here at Wanneroo. It’s an awesome track but to ride it well you really have to flow well and be ready physically or this place can punish you. I did exactly what I needed to do and that’s win the races that I can and be up the front in those that I can’t. Consistently good results are what it takes to win a championship and so far things are working well and the Serco team are doing a great job.” – Styke

Team mate Kirk Gibbs faced some adversity despite racing well in the tough conditions. A flat tyre early in moto one saw Gibbs return to the mechanics area to change the rear wheel but left him out of the points. He bounced back strongly in moto two with a second place finish and salvaged some much needed points.

Race three and 14 laps is a tough ask of any rider, but with Gibbs still dealing with wrist injuries from a pre-season fall, the race was always going to be about survival. He hung tough the entire moto and took a well-earned sixth place finish, leaving him in 10th for the round but still remains third overall in the series standings.

“This year I seem to struggle to string three races together to make a good round. The last two races today were good but that DNF in the first race cost a lot of points and set me back in the overall. With Luke being so consistent, no rider can afford to drop motos. But we head to my home state next week and its time I got it together and put in three good races at the level I’m capable of!” – Gibbs

Todd Potter, Wes Agee, Nick Dunne, and Rob Adelberg took on Southern California’s Red Bull X-Fighters located at Glen Helen Raceway. This was the largest course in the history of FMX measuring 300 feet by 750 feet, mixed up with 30 different riding options; a bowl-curved wall, quarter pipe, wall ride and a 160-foot jump, a 60-foot-high step. Adelberg went down hard, prior to the contest breaking his jaw. This didn’t stop Rob from riding as he finishing up with a 6th place finish. Dunne made his first X-Fighters appearance laying out a solid run with some huge tricks for the judges finishing off in 10th place.

Agee took on his first Red Bull X-Fighters, stepping it up and impressing the fans and judges with his huge tricks and big extensions, wrapping up a 3rd place podium finish and claiming Best Move! Potter showed that fans how it’s done, dominating each jump while checking off a list of tricks that impressed the judges for this 1st place podium finish. Congrats to the Metal Mulisha team for dominating the Glen Helen X-Fighters!

The X Fighter gates open at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The event begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $30 for grandstand and $275 for the VIP area with a trackside hospitality suite. Overnight camping beginning Thursday costs $400 and includes access to practice.

As part of the Red Bull Signature Series, the event will be televised nationally on Saturday, May 12 on NBC Sports Network at 9 p.m. PT/midnight ET and on Saturday, May 26 on NBC at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT.
