Just before Christmas Metal Toast reached it’s 3rd birthday which made me think what exactly have I done with the site over the past few years. I’ve only ever had one long stint of a running site lasting for about 6 months. All the other time it’s been sitting there gathering dust. So I’ve decided to revive it a little and change the format of the site to be a little more interesting and thought-provoking.

The aim of the old site was to just be a blog which hasn’t worked as I can never think of anything to write, so I’ve decided to make the new site a more defined one which isn’t about posting everything and anything but posting my views and opinions on certain themes.

However, at the moment I’m bogged down with the development of Citable so it won’t be an overnight transition, but I am constantly planning the features and design of the new site with the hope of making a much more interesting and regularly updated site.

It just leaves one big question as to what I should use to power the site. I can’t decide whether to use a blog-engine like WordPress, which would need a lot of tweaking in order to make it look how I would like but would be ready to go instantly, or whether to build my own system, which could easily be changed to work how I want it to but would take quite a while to get finished (as I found out with Citable).

Whichever system I decide to use it’ll be a while before the “new” Metal Toast goes online as other projects desperately need finishing first.

I hate posting updates but I can’t help but think that 4 weeks is an awfully long time to pass by without a new entry.

I bought a new domain at the end of September so all my spare time has been devoted to that, leaving all my other sites at the road side whilst I get it finished. However it’s coming along so it shouldn’t be too long before I have my own Tumblelog up and running.

To add to all this I now can’t stand the theme I designed for our socio-political blog which I’m due to launch with some friends. So I guess that’s back on the list as well then!

Topping it all off is the fact that the latest version of Movable type has gone from a repetitive (but usable) templating engine to one that is less repetitive but painfully complex to understand, hence why my blog still uses the default theme.

I can still remember when I started my GCSEs’ thinking how I just can’t wait for them to be over and enjoy my 3 month summer holidays without a single stress in the world, getting up when I wanted and going to bed when I wanted, however like most things in life it sounded better than it actually was and by the end of the holidays I was ripping my hair out with boredom.

However all good things must come to an end, so after collecting my GCSE results a few weeks back (which I never got round to blogging about), and confirming my place in the Sixth Form, I’ve now started!

I’m still finding it weird having all these free periods though, dotted all over the place, but ‘eh who’s complaining? It’s more time for chatting and messing about, plus it means I can do some homework to save time at home (not that I’ve done any in school yet).

It’s only early days so things could change but so far it’s so good and I’m enjoying it.

Several years back Google had to stop people from the UK registering an email address @gmail.com because the word “gmail” was trademarked to another company. Now Google has made signing up to Gmail public rather than invitation based they’ve decided to put a link on the UK Google Homepage. The only problem is when you start clicking through you can register an email address @gmail.com rather than @googlemail.com, which it should be. However people clicking the signup link from within Gmail will have to register an @googlemail.com address. I’m not complaining!

UPDATE (19 Dec 2009): This article is extremely out of date but you can still claim an @gmail.com address by going to www.gmail.com and clicking sign up via a proxy such as www.hidemyass.com.
