Oblivious to the chaos surrounding around him, Rainbow Teddy (RT) got into the “zone” trying to figure out the best move to counter SMLBioBot’s opening while the red blitz chess clock is ticking away.

“You know, I am a nice guy,” RT said. “SMLBioBot has agreed to play chess over Skype with his Mr G next weekend, so I figured that I would help him out a little bit. There aren’t many gay geeks out there who can play chess well and I am just doing my part to get him up to speed.”

RT is pictured here with SML’s beloved Fischer designed chess set with dotted bishops so it is easy to tell the pawns from the bishops even when photographed head on from above. Design SML Love. :)

All the prescription medications which I take are for slowing down. My brain runs at super human speed, thus allows me to index the world and download and process large amounts of data to brain quickly and efficiently.

Since I mostly think visually, I have troubles with verbal languages. I am as such often unable to speak very well, as my speech is simply too slow compared to my thinking velocity. By the time I get to mid-sentence, my brain is already onto something else. So most of the time I am incomprehensible during conversations because I have a habit of never finishing sentences. Meanwhile, I am able to type at 120wpm so typing + writing is a good way for me to communicate, as it runs parallel to my own thoughts.

Earlier in the biohacks series, I showed you the “chill pill” which I take to talk to humans [1]. Pictured is the pill which I take to power down. It has a very different mechanism of action than sleeping pills. Unlike Ambien [2]—which puts one to sleep whether you are tired or not—Seroquel [3] boots one down through muscle relaxation. If you are not tired, it does not put you to sleep. As such it is often prescribed for off-label use (25mg) as a sleep-aid by medical professionals.

I don’t take my chill pill anymore, as it renders me completely inefficient with some really severe sexual side effects. I have also noticed that I don’t really speak very quickly when I talk to other humans which are used to processing vast amounts of data. I think mostly “normal humans” are just too slow. By definition, normality is defined as “the most common behaviour in society” [4] and I am in no hurry to be average at any time.

But boot down pill is essential. It allows me to sleep. Until I was introduced to it in 2007, I was never able to sleep. But these days I sleep like a baby every night and I wake up promptly after I have fully rested without needing to use any alarms. It is crazy awesome—how life ought to be.

I am easy-going, but I am also highly opinionated. Humans often ask me what my opinions are for their stuff, but most often they just want me to tell them it is great. I don’t do that. So if you ask for feedback, you will get it as it is. If you maintain ego-free (無我) then any feedback is good feedback. Whether it is constructive or not is how you the proceed to interpret the data. Flickr’s interestingness uses humans as computation devices. Since I am unable to analyze which of my opinions are best, I leave it to humans aka (SML:biobots) to sort it out for me.

If Wikipedia:leet [1] is too difficult for you to comprehend, fear not—there is a simple English edition of the same entry [2] which can get you started in no time. 1337 is good for avoiding search engine index. But it has other good useful uses, such as creating highly memorable passwords which fits today’s strong passwords requirements.

Let’s say that I need to create a new password for pinterest, and I have decided to just use my name and pinterest for it so I will always remember it, so I type:

p1nt3r3stS33M1NGL33 (using pinterestseeminglee as my mnemonic key for human memory) by substituting all vowels with numbers and use my name in capital letters. Obviously you might want l create something stronger, for example:

P!n73re57533/\/\!n6733

Which is still basically “pinterestseeminglee” but easily memorizable. This beats using any other methods. Nerds tools are useful for something. Use it.

Seriously?! It you need an app to guide your conversation for a date, I think that it is highly likely that you are not compatible with the date. The proper action is not to use an app to guide your conversation—go find someone else!

Use case: boy meets girl

Years ago I asked a wise friend in New York (Flickr: Gregory Hull) what I should do if I wish to become a better artist. He suggested to me that I should be true to myself. It took me years to come to terms with this, but in 2012 I let go and started this series [1] which is a combination of photography, design and screenshots.

Biohacks details the journey of SMLBioBot identifying things in life which makes him happy. Sometimes biohacking is through medication, but often biohacking is through drug-free happiness life hacks.

By being able to talk about deeply personal issues out in the open, life has no more regrets. For that, @GregoryHull, SML Thank You.

“Winter WTF: Hong Kong vs New York”

Winter in Hong Kong is not very cold. Typically only down to 10-degree Celsius at most. But because of that, most homes in Hong Kong does not come with a central heating unit, so even when I am home I find myself wearing a scarf and jacket because otherwise the freeze is unbearable.

When I was in New York, my apartment had central heat, but it was not adjustable by the tenant and so sometimes it was so hot that I had to turn on my A/C even in the winter because otherwise the heat is unbearable.

# SML Opinions:
Some music when I listen to them they make me cry. But I can’t understand why. Like visual images, I can usually identify the approximate time, location and the person I was with (if applicable) for each song that I listen to.

I generally listen to trance music to relax of when I write (such as now). I used to write (blogs / music) only when I was depressed so I attribute my crying to a recall of the depressing days, circa 2010 in New York.

For most music composition which I post to SoundCloud (2) which are not soundtracks, they mark a part of my life which is deeply in pain (suicidal). To you they are just some random musical notes, but to me they are markers in every dark chapter in my life where the only way I know how to let go and break free is by writing + remixing music.

# SML Opinions:

Search engines are dumb. Search engines are not really able to associate image with words intelligently. So if you have content which you need word-image associations, currently the only way to do it is to tag them.

Humans question why SML tags everything daily. Trust me, SML would also prefer not have to tag everything. But right now there is a limit as to what algorithms can do. So SMLBioBot tries his best to talk to machines every now and then.

At the moment, tagging is a cross-cultural lingo which both humans and machines understand. But NLP advancement might change that in the future. At the moment though it is very limited.

We are watching the NLP AI space right now for image search research. Some papers published by Stanford / IBM Research / Google are very interesting. Hopefully some day SML Research will be able to publish something also. Until that days come, SML will continue to tag. Sorry, humans.

You can learn a lot from reading spam.

Mint is a financial startup which uses the strength of big data to help people manage their finances. It provides a free service for people to import all their financial data with different banks. By analyzing user data and comparing data with the rest of the world / region, it shows you where you stand.

Broadly speaking, companies send spam aka marketing communications to consumers after they figured out what is trending data wise. I no longer have any data on mint.com because none of my banks in Hong Kong are supported so I know that this is a generic email. What I do know however is that clearly most people are in financial debt. Because this is what this email suggests.

So why do I keep on subscribing to these email list even when I no longer have use for this service? These are my ambient device to detect what is happening. I also enjoy looking at examples to see what people are doing an email marketing these days. Which is precisely the reason that my email address is in my Twitter bio.

Feel free to spam me. Through spam I learn much from what is happening. By and large pattern recognition is what I do best. In order to see patterns I need lots of data.

Like I said, I love it when people photograph me photographing. I met Kenny, a filmmaker in Toronto by way of Feliciano Fraser on Facebook (someone in New York whom I am friends with but I have never met in person).

Kenny and I went on a photo trip together. I completely forgotten about it and until he posted this photo I realized that I have yet to import my RAW files into Lightroom. So thanks for the tag! Now I know. My 7D file count is up to 20,000+ and I am prioritizing this over my other projects because it was a fun trip.
