Methodist Hospitals donated a one year’s supply of daily living necessities to support the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in Gary. The supplies included razors, shaving gel, lotion, deodorant, toothbrush and paste, slippers, combs, soap and shampoo – many items we all take for granted.

“We are proud to be able to support the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center in Gary as this program is essential to the community,” said Dr. Michael Davenport, President and Interim CEO of Methodist Hospitals.

The Salvation Army Center Center in Gary is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program which provides spiritual, social, and emotional assistance for men who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. The facility, administered by Captains Robb and Lynn Buttrey, offers residential housing, group and individual counseling as well as work therapy for program participants. The physical and spiritual care that program participants receive prepares them to re-enter society and return to gainful employment. Many of those who have been rehabilitated are reunited with their families and resume a normal life. A long term commitment of at least six months is required so patterns of poor decision-making can be broken and replaced with positive life choices which will help them become productive citizens of the community. The ARC program is free of charge to men in the Northwest Indiana area.

Gary, IN - November 6, 2014 – Methodist Hospitals today announced that it has been named to the Top 500 of the 2014 HomeCare Elite™, a recognition of the top-performing home health agencies in the United States. Now in its ninth year, the HomeCare Elite identifies the top 25 percent of agencies and highlights the top 100 and top 500 agencies overall. Winners are ranked by an analysis of publicly available performance measures in quality outcomes, best practice (process measure) implementation, patient experience (Home Health CAHPS®), quality improvement and consistency, and financial performance. In order to be considered, an agency must be Medicare-certified and have data for at least one outcome in Home Health Compare. Out of 9,994 agencies considered, 2,501 are elite.

The award is sponsored by OCS HomeCare by National Research Corporation, the leading products for home health metrics and analytics, and DecisionHealth, publisher of the most respected independent newsletter in the home care profession, Home Health Line.

“The 2014 HomeCare Elite winners demonstrate a commitment to providing high quality care in their home health communities and we recognize them for their remarkable achievements,” said Mary Oakes, Senior Vice President of Post-Acute at National Research. “We congratulate Methodist Hospitals on being one of the top 500 home care agencies in the country.”

Methodist Hospitals Manager of Home Health Services, Martha Sutkowski, attributes the hospitals’ strong performance to “our single-minded focus on achieving the best possible outcomes and experience for every patient, every day.” In 2014, Methodist Hospitals consistently scored significantly higher than the state average on all seven outcomes measures on which CMS evaluates home health providers and its patient experience scores exceed state and national benchmarks.

“We are very proud to be counted among the top home health agencies in the nation,” said President and Interim CEO Michael Davenport, M.D. “This award is another indication of Methodist Hospitals’ deep commitment to the health and wellbeing of the Northwest Indiana community.”

“HomeCare Elite recognition is a significant acknowledgement. In today’s healthcare ecosystem, it is imperative that our seniors have access to quality home healthcare in order to ensure better patient outcomes and improve overall cost, and therefore, home healthcare continues to remain an integral part of the care continuum. The winners of the HomeCare Elite Award are proving that a heightened focus on clinical outcomes, patient experience, and financial management lead to success,” said Marci Heydt, Product Manager for the post-acute care business group of DecisionHealth.

Gary, IN—(October 8, 2014)—Methodist Hospitals recently signed an $11 million dollar agreement with Siemens Medical Solutions USA Inc. to replace all of its diagnostic imaging equipment with the latest technologies available. The first phase of this agreement to be completed in 2014 will be a multi-million dollar investment in Siemens’ cutting-edge CT and radiography equipment, including:

	• Two SOMATOM Definition Edge 128-slice CT systems, which provide clearer images with reduced scanning time and dose reduction technology using Siemens SAFIRE dose reduction algorithm, which can reduce dose to the patient by 54% to 60%. This system boasts enhanced neuro and cardiac imaging capabilities. Through these technologies, clinicians are able to make more sound diagnoses even for the most challenging cases, such as trauma and bariatric patients.

• Four Mobilett Mira mobile digital X-ray systems with wireless technology, which are among the smallest on the market and have a rotating swivel arm, giving radiologists and technicians more flexibility to access patients and capture high-quality images with greater ease. These systems also boast short exposure times which results in radiation dose reduction for the patients.

• A Luminos dRF MAX digital radiography/fluoroscopy room. This system combines radiography with a video screen, enabling real-time visualization of a body part or of a foreign body or dye though the body. The Luminos MAX System offers the advantages of both digital fluoroscopy and radiography in one system, with a flat panel detector for sharper imaging and the lowest table height for safer patient transfer.

Later phases of this project will include the addition of new MRI systems, nuclear medicine systems, ultrasound systems including systems with dedicated breast imaging capabilities, and further additions to the array of CT and radiography equipment available at Methodist facilities.

“Methodist Hospitals is committed to providing the highest quality of care, and this starts with the quality and range of our diagnostic imaging capabilities. We are pleased to be working with Siemens to bring our patients at both the Northlake and Southlake Campuses the best in imaging technology,” said Dr. Michael Davenport, President and Interim CEO at Methodist.

“Siemens is honored that the Methodist Hospitals organization, with its reputation for exceptional patient care, has chosen these Siemens systems for the initial phase of its ambitious multi-million dollar investment in advanced diagnostic imaging,” says Gregory Sorensen, MD, CEO of Siemens Healthcare North America. “Leading-edge medical imaging technology helps physicians reach an accurate diagnosis more efficiently.”

*In clinical practice, the use of SAFIRE may reduce CT patient dose on the clinical task, patient size, anatomical location, and clinical practice. A consultation with a radiologist and a physicist should be made to determine the appropriate dose to obtain diagnostic image quality for the particular clinical task. The following test method was used to determine a 54 to 60 percent dose reduction when using the SAFIRE reconstruction software: Noise, CT numbers, homogeneity, low-contrast resolution and high-contrast resolution were assessed in a Gammex 438 phantom. Low-dose data reconstructed with SAFIRE showed the same image quality compared to full-dose data based on this test. Data on file.
Physicians affiliated with Internal Medicine Associates (IMA) and the Methodist Hospitals GERD Center were recognized by EndoGastric Solutions Inc. for outstanding achievement for their ongoing contributions to treating and improving the quality of life for patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) also known as acid reflux. Gastroenterology physicians Drs. Daniel B. Hurwich, Peter Mavrelis, Ahmad B. Shughoury and Kumar Venkat have performed over 250 Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) procedures, a highly successful procedure to repair the antireflux valve with no incisions.

“We believe the TIF procedure fills a therapy gap that exists for GERD patients who take daily medications and who remain unsatisfied because of incomplete symptom control,” said Skip Baldino, CEO of EndoGastric Solutions. “The TIF procedure may offer these patients the opportunity to safely eliminate their troublesome typical and atypical symptoms without the risk of post laparoscopic fundoplication syndromes like gas bloat and difficulty swallowing. The physicians at IMA are recognized nationally as thought leaders who have embraced new and innovative methods to care for the GERD patients they serve. We compliment them as well as the entire staff for their dedication to their community.”

IMA Endoscopy SurgiCenter, P.C. has partnered with Methodist Hospitals in a co-management relationship under which Methodist Hospitals acquired the IMA Endoscopy SurgiCenter. The co-management arrangement has enabled Methodist Hospitals to increase the number of endoscopic procedures it conducts by more than 2,500 annually. The co-management agreement is an arrangement where physicians and Methodist Hospitals share involvement in the daily operations providing the opportunity to deliver high quality, coordinated care with the focus on outstanding patient outcomes.

“Methodist Hospitals congratulates the physicians of IMA on being recognized for this outstanding achievement. We are very pleased to work with the physicians of IMA and our partnership has provided us the opportunity to work with an outstanding group of physicians in order to provide excellent care to the individuals in our community, “said Dr. Michael Davenport, President & Interim CEO.

Methodist Hospitals announced the enrollment of the first participants in the Lipid-Rich Plaque (LRP) Study, a large-scale, multi-center, international study aimed at linking the presence of LRP, a type of fatty coronary artery plaque, to the occurrence of a cardiac event, such as a heart attack. LRP is implicated in most heart attacks and will be identified in study participants using an intravascular imaging technology known as the TVC Imaging System™.

“As one of the nation’s leaders in cardiovascular medicine, Methodist Hospitals is proud to be involved in a cutting-edge research effort that could advance our understanding and management of coronary artery disease,” said Andre Artis, M.D., Codirector of the Heart and Vascular Institute at Methodist Hospitals. “The findings from the LRP Study could show that patients with LRP are more prone to experiencing a major adverse cardiac event, and that knowledge could help inform our decision of how and when to use drugs and/or interventional treatments like angioplasty to improve patient outcomes.”

LRP and other coronary artery plaque is caused by the build-up of cholesterol and other materials inside the walls of the coronary arteries. Over time, the accumulation of plaque can gradually reduce blood supply to the heart, leading to chest pain during exertion. In addition, the plaque may also rupture, which can lead to a blood clot that causes a heart attack or sudden death. Intravascular imaging using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and enhanced intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is currently used at Methodist Hospitals to assess the structure and composition of plaque from within the heart’s blood vessels, and to guide the interventional treatment for better procedural outcomes.

The LRP Study, which launched in October 2013, will use NIRS-IVUS imaging to identify patients with LRP, and monitor these patients for two years for the incidence of a major adverse cardiac event. The study will initially focus on validating the ability of NIRS-IVUS intravascular imaging to predict coronary events, including heart attacks. If and when that goal is achieved, the study will transition

Respiratory Monitoring Helps to Protect Patients on Pain Medication

Gary, IN—(June 25, 2014)—Methodist Hospitals recently strengthened patient safety measures by expanding its use of capnography to monitor patients using patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) to regulate their pain after surgery.

PCA can provide an effective way to control pain by allowing patients to self-administer small doses of pain medication intravenously, but the technology poses unique risks because the opioid medications used can also suppress the patient’s breathing. The Joint Commission, the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices all recommend that hospitals take special precautions including monitoring patients with capnography and oximetry.

Specifically, capnography measures how effectively patients are breathing by measuring exhaled carbon dioxide and can alert medical caregivers when life-threatening respiratory depression occurs. Capnography provides the earliest indication of evolving respiratory compromise, which can lead to significant morbidity or even cardiopulmonary arrest if undetected. Oximetry monitors the patient’s blood oxygen levels ensuring that the patient is receiving enough oxygen.

Methodist Hospitals is among the nation’s leaders in the early implementation of capnography monitoring to protect patients using PCA. Long used in operating rooms to monitor patients under general anesthesia, hospitals are now deploying capnography after surgery, as well. The early indication of respiratory depression capnography provides enables medical staff to intervene before serious adverse events happen.

“Our decision to expand the use of capnography beyond surgery and the ICU to monitor all of our patients using patient-controlled anesthesia is in line with national best practices and underscores our dedication to patient safety,” said Mary Jo Valentine, RN, CNS, Director of Nursing Professional Development.

“Methodist Hospitals is committed to providing the highest quality of care. This is a great accomplishment and supports our efforts to provide the best quality care to all of our patients,” said Dr. Michael Davenport, President and Interim CEO at Methodist.

Methodist Hospitals chose capnography equipment from Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products and recognized innovator in patient monitoring and respiratory care devices.

“We commend Methodist Hospitals for being part of a growing number of facilities across the country committed to patient safety through the use of capnography,” said Matt Anderson, Vice President and General Manager Respiratory & Monitoring Solutions, Covidien. “Its decision to monitor patients at risk of respiratory depression with capnography and oximetry ensures patients have a level of protection when using state-of-the-art pain management systems.”
Methodist Hospitals has once again received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients. Methodist was the first hospital in Northwest Indiana to receive this award. Get With The Guidelines Stroke helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Methodist earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.

“Methodist Hospitals is dedicated to improving the quality of stroke care and The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Stroke helps us achieve that goal,” said Dr. Michael Davenport, President and Interim CEO. “With this award, our hospital demonstrates our commitment to ensure that our patients receive care based on internationally-respected clinical guidelines.”

“We are pleased to recognize Methodist Hospitals for their commitment and dedication to stroke care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines steering committee and Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. “Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures can reduce patients’ length of stays and 30-day readmission rates and reduce disparity gaps in care.”

Get With The Guidelines–Stroke also helps staff implement prevention measures, which include educating stroke patients to manage their risk factors and to be aware of warning signs for stroke, and ensuring they take their medications properly. Hospitals can make customized patient education materials available upon discharge, based on the patients’ individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format in either English or Spanish.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals honored for providing exceptional patient care and treatment.
Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals has been named a recipient of the Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Breast Centers, acknowledging its dedication to providing exceptional patient care and treatment. Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among American women according to the American Cancer Society, and one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The Women’s Choice Award seal signifies Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals’ commitment to a global mission to elevate the patient experience for women and all patients as one of America’s Best Breast Centers.

“Today, there are nearly three million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and we only want to see this number increase,” says Delia Passi, CEO & founder of Women Certified, home of the Women’s Choice Award. “Breast care is extremely vital to women’s health and we want them to know that Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center has met the highest standards in caring for the needs of their female patients. The Women’s Choice Award is the only program that identifies the nation’s best in healthcare based on patient satisfaction, clinical excellence and what women really want when it comes to treatment and a quality medical experience.”

Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals earned the award by having met the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) standards from the American College of Surgeons. The NAPBC is a consortium of national, professional organizations focused on breast health and dedicated to the improvement of quality care and outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast through evidence-based standards and patient and professional education. As one of Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals is Among America’s Best Breast Centers. America’s Best Breast Centers, Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center also carries the Seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and scored above-average on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient satisfaction measures.

“We are proud to receive this award, and I congratulate our staff and physicians for their hard work and dedication each and every day. This is a great achievement, and comes on the heels of being the first hospitals in Northwest Indiana to offer 3D mammography technology and the first to gain NAPBC Accreditation, and being awarded the Breast Imaging Center by the American College of Radiology. This award is a testament of our overriding goal of providing the best treatment and outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Michael Davenport, President and Interim CEO.

The Women’s Choice Award helps women and their families by providing recommendations they can trust and use when making healthcare choices. “We have found that recommendations are the single most important consideration used by women in selecting a hospital or care center,” added Passi. “By letting women know which breast centers in their area are among America’s best, we are able to reduce risk by helping them make better decisions and smarter healthcare choices.”

As the collective voice of female consumers, the Women’s Choice Award provides women with recommendations from other women that they can rely upon.
