Special livery for the BMW M235i Racing at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife!

2014-06-18T10:02:00.001-04:00

Official BMW Press Release:

Nürburgring (DE), 18th June 2014. BMW Motorsport will compete with a real eye-catcher at this weekend’s Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE). The BMW Motorsport design team has given the BMW M235i Racing with the appropriate start number 235 an extraordinary look, reminiscent of the famous Art Cars of former years, for the race in the Eifel Mountains.

Among those in action at the wheel of the works-assisted car will be two motorsport journalists Marcus Schurig (DE) and Jethro Bovingdon (GB). They will be supported over the course of the marathon venture by BMW Motorsport Junior Alexander Mies (DE) and former MotoGP rider Alex Hofmann (DE). Hofmann will be out on track in his role of expert for TV station Sport1, which is broadcasting the 24-hour race live, and will provide spectacular images of the Nordschleife (DE) from the on-board camera. Sport1 will show regular footage from the cockpit of the BMW M235i Racing.

“I am delighted we will get to see this model at the 24-hour race, as well as the many BMW M235i Racings fielded by our privateer teams,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “The livery on this special BMW M235i Racing is fantastic. I must pay a huge compliment to the staff in the Design department. With almost 50 cars in the field, the variety of BMW racing cars at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife is once again mighty impressive in 2014. However, this particular car adds a very special splash of colour and I am certain it will go down well with the fans.”

The BMW M235i Coupé’s motorsport genes are clear to see in the production version, thanks to the aerodynamically optimised chassis design. And the car is driven by the most powerful petrol engine ever developed for a BMW M Performance car: a straight six-cylinder with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. With a capacity of 2,979 cm³, the racing version generates a mighty 333 hp (245 kW).

Motorsport-specific driver aids, such as ABS, DSC and traction control, ensure that the BMW M235i Racing can also be driven safely by those new to motorsport. The equipment also includes a mechanical limited-slip differential, which is also available for the BMW M235i Coupé in the original BMW Parts range, and built-in components like the FIA-approved safety cage. The BMW M Performance Parts range has also provided components, including the rear and front spoilers, the diffusor and the carbon wing mirrors.

The car was in action at the qualifying race for the Nürburgring 24 Hours back in April, and will start the race from 17th place overall.

Endurance highlight in the “Green Hell”: strong contingent of BMW Sports Trophy teams heads to the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

2014-06-16T09:33:00.000-04:00

Official BMW Press Release:

Munich (DE), 16th June 2014. This weekend features the highlight of the endurance season for BMW Motorsport: the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring (DE). After months of intense preparation, the BMW Sports Trophy teams travel to the long-distance classic on the Nordschleife (DE) with a strong line-up. The high-class field in the “Green Hell” will include six BMW Z4 GT3s, all with their sights set on overall victory. They are joined by the starters in the BMW M235i Racing Cup class, a BMW M235i Racing fielded by BMW Motorsport as a journalist car, and the usual large number of privateers in their own BMWs.

“The 24-hour race at the Nürburgring and BMW Motorsport can look back on a long and successful history together,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “It was a BMW that crossed the finish line first at the inaugural event back in 1970. To date we have claimed 19 overall victories there. Our teams are determined to make it triumph number 20 for BMW in the Eifel Mountains. We are hugely optimistic ahead of this classic. However, there is still a very long way to go before the finish on Sunday – and absolutely everything must come together perfectly to have any chance of a top result in this extremely tough race. And you obviously need that little bit of luck too in the ‘Green Hell’. Whatever happens, our preparations with the BMW Z4 GT3 have definitely been satisfactory. The BMW Sports Trophy teams are fielding a car that has been tried and tested on numerous occasions, and which has proven itself more than once on the Nordschleife. As far as the squad of drivers for our teams with the BMW Z4 GT3 is concerned, I feel we are competing with some of the strongest drivers you could possibly find for the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. And we need them to be, as our opponents are also very strong. They have shown that at the preparatory races.”

BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert lines up with works support from BMW Motorsport for the third time, and fields two BMW Z4 GT3s. Car number 19 will be driven by Lucas Luhr (DE), Dirk Müller (DE), Alexander Sims (GB) and Dirk Werner (DE). Meanwhile, the driving duties in the number 20 car will be shared by Dominik Baumann (AT), Claudia Hürtgen (DE), Jens Klingmann (DE) and BMW DTM driver Martin Tomczyk (DE).

Tomczyk’s two DTM colleagues Maxime Martin (BE) and Marco Wittmann (DE) start in one of the two BMW Z4 GT3s run by BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS. They share the cockpit of the number 25 car with Uwe Alzen (DE) and Jörg Müller (DE). Car number 26 will be driven by Dirk Adorf (DE), Nick Catsburg (NL), Bas Leinders (BE) and Markus Palttala (FI). Like the two BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert cars, the number 25 and 26 BMW Z4 GT3s are equipped with innovative BMW laser light technology, which guarantees significantly improved vision in the dark. In addition to these four cars, the Walkenhorst Motorsport team will also run two BMW Z4 GT3s in the SP9 class.

Fourteen teams are registered for the BMW M235i Racing Cup, which is making its first appearance this season. BMW Motorsport will also field a 15th BMW M235i Racing. This car will be shared by motorsport journalists Marcus Schurig (DE) and Jethro Bovingdon (GB), alongside former MotoGP rider Alex Hofmann (DE) and BMW Motorsport Junior Alexander Mies (DE).

Quotes from the team principals and drivers ahead of the 24-hour race.

Stefan Wendl (Team Manager, BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert):“On the whole, we are very happy with our preparations. You obviously always find the odd detail that can still be improved, but we have plenty of time for that during the practices on the race weekend. We gave every detail of our cars a thorough check after the last VLN race. We know that we have two durable cars, in which our drivers will feel very comfortable. That is an important part of an impressive total package.”

Bas Leinders (Team Principal, BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS):“Our preparations were absolutely perfect. We always finished with both cars, won twice, and had no problems with the reliability of the BMW Z4 GT3. We gathered an awful lot of data. Therefore, we now take a lot of optimism into the race. Thanks to the support of BMW Motorsport, the package of team, car and drivers is very strong. We should be in a position to mix it at the very front of the field. However, we must remain cautious, as we can be certain that the opposition did not show all their cards during the preparations.”

Dirk Werner (BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert, car number 19):“The fact that this year’s 24-hour race comes later in the season means we have had more time to prepare for the big day. It also means that I am even more excited about tackling the marathon through the ‘Green Hell’ with BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert. We have a great team, a strong and reliable car, and the atmosphere around the Nordschleife will be amazing, as always. I can hardly wait to get started.”

Martin Tomczyk (BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert, car number 20):“I am taking on the ‘Green Hell’ for the second time in a row with the BMW Z4 GT3, and am really looking forward to it. There is no greater challenge for a racing driver than this 24-hour race. I have a strong and experienced team behind me in BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert, and three very quick drivers in the form of Claudia, Dominik and Jens. The preparations for the race have been long enough for us all to compete as well prepared as possible. A lot will be decided during the night. I think our new BMW laser lights will help improve our vision in the dark. The goal is obvious: we have our sights set on overall victory.”

Marco Wittmann (BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS, car number 25):“I have had an excellent season so far. I could never have dream that I would be travelling to the Nürburgring on the back of two DTM wins and leading the Drivers’ Championship. I obviously hope to continue this run with BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS. We have a very reliable car in the BMW Z4 GT3 and are a very strong team. We should certainly be able to challenge at the head of the field.”

Dirk Adorf (BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS, car number 26):“The preparations went very well for us – particularly with the victory at one of the VLN races. I am very impressed with my team, who I only met up with for the first time this season. We have formed a very tight-knit unit in recent months. That could be our trump card. If the racing gods are on our side, I think we could be in with a shout of overall victory. The preparations showed that we have what it takes.”

Alexander Mies (BMW M235i Racing, car number 235):“I am looking forward to being part of the journalist car at the 24-hour race. I know most of my team-mates from the qualifying race. We are a good troop. It is a bit odd, as a BMW Junior, to be the man with the most experience of the car and the circuit. However, that only serves to make me even more determined. I find the professional way in which BMW Motorsport goes about its work particularly impressive. Compared to what I have experienced in the past, the organisation in a works team is on a completely different level.”

Videos of my E92 M3 on the dyno...

2014-06-14T08:14:00.000-04:00

While at Rogue Engineering's Open House/Charity Event I made a few runs on their Dyno Dynamics dynamometer.

*This car has no performance software at this time

The car put down 336.1 WHP on the Dyno Dynamics dynamometer. While the low numbers are disapointing considering the car's modifications, they were to be expected from the Dyno Dynamics... They don't call it the heartbreaker for nothing. I'd be interested to see what it puts down on a Dynojet.

Here is another BMW brochure that I picked up. This is a French market brochure that introduced the European E36 M3 equipped with the legendary S50B30 motor. Sadly, this engine never made it into the U.S. market cars...

June 2014 BMW of North America Open House and E30 M3 SIGFest

2014-06-12T12:47:00.002-04:00

SIGFest is the annual meeting of the members of the E30 M3 Special Interest Group. This year marks the 15th SIGFest gathering and could not have been held at a better venue, BMW of North America. BMW NA was kind enough to open their doors and extensive property to some of the most dedicated automotive enthusiasts that I have ever met. The excitement in the air was palpable. Some of the most pristine E30 M3s on the East Coast juxtaposed by BMW's newest offerings, including the new fifth generation F80 and F82 M3/M4 and even an i8! Even against such a technologically advanced backdrop of turbocharged and hybrid powered machines bristling with carbon fiber composite components, ultimately, it was the E30s that drew the crowds.

This year's event drew over 60 E30 M3s. Examples ranged from immaculate, bone stock, no expense spared restorations, to full blown race cars that have probably seen more tire changes than applications of wax. The cars that fell in between these extremes were powered by everything from the standard S14 powerplant, to S54 swaps that somehow look perfectly at home in the E30's engine bay. It's always enjoyable to listen to the owners talk about their cars, how they acquired them, future plans, and their never-ending quests to find just the right piece to complete their builds.

A lot of talk gets thrown around regarding what makes an M car an M car. It's not just a badge. The E30 M3 is a total package, it can do a lot, and it does it all well. To this day the E30 M3 remains a standard by which modern sports car offerings are measured. It is the essence of BMW Motorsport condensed into streetcar form. To me, it is not only one of the best M cars ever, but one of the best cars ever, period. The designers and engineers that conceived this car never could have known that it would have such a lasting influence on the automotive world, but the fact remains that it has. With the level of care and maintenance that the SIGFest attendees pour into their M3s, street going versions of this icon will continue to inspire onlookers for many years to come.

They say that you should never meet your heroes, well who ever coined that phrase has never sat in an E30 M3. I met mine, and I won't rest until one occupies a place in my garage.

BMW Group Technology Office and GoPro Create First Automotive Sports Camera Integration

2014-06-12T12:02:00.003-04:00

Official BMW Press Release:

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 12, 2014 11:30AM EDT / 8:30AM PDT . . . The BMW Group Technology Office and GoPro have announced the first-ever, mass-produced integration of a GoPro camera with an automobile’s on board infotainment system. In BMW Group vehicles equipped with the BMW Apps or MINI Connected option, a GoPro camera may now be configured and controlled using BMW’s state-of-the-art iDrive controller and high-resolution screen. Starting in July 2014, the integration will be functional on all model year 2012 and later BMW Group vehicles equipped with the BMW Apps or MINI Connected option, when used with a Wi-Fi-equipped GoPro camera. The updated GoPro App is now available for free in the iTunes Store (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gopro-app/id561350520).

“Working with GoPro to design this integration was remarkable,” said Phil Johnston, Head of BMW Group AppCenter USA. “’Creative’ and ‘insightful’ just begin to describe the experience. GoPro is a natural fit for BMW enthusiast drivers. The power and flexibility of the BMW Group App Integration Platform coupled with GoPro’s advanced camera technology brings new, safe, and engaging experiences to the enthusiasts that were previously not possible. When the camera is connected to the car, it allows GoPro’s app to present context-appropriate presets that allow the enthusiast to capture the perfect shot.”

“GoPro has deep roots in motorsports and is passionate about enabling drivers to capture their road or track experience,” said Adam Silver, GoPro Director of Strategic Product Opportunities. “The GoPro and BMW collaboration sets a new standard in the category and is an important first step in a partnership designed to deliver next-level integration between camera and car.”

This groundbreaking integration is designed specifically to reduce driver distraction and enhance the capabilities for which “The Ultimate Driving Machine®” and GoPro, one of the world’s most versatile cameras, are famous. In addition to aiming the camera using BMW’s large central screen, users may quickly choose between six pre-set camera modes: Leisure Drive Facing Out, Night Driving, Sport Drive Facing Out, Drive Camera Facing In, Winding Road Time-lapse, and Straight Road Time-lapse. The camera’s RECORD function may be started and stopped by the driver at will, and vital camera status indicators are displayed, including recording elapsed time, battery life, and Wi-Fi signal strength. The user may also toggle the camera’s SLEEP mode to prolong battery life between shots.

How it works.

First, the user’s BMW or MINI vehicle must be equipped with the BMW Apps or MINI Connected option, respectively. Next, the user’s Wi-Fi-equipped GoPro camera (HERO3+ and later) communicates with the GoPro App installed on the driver’s iPhone 4 or later, which must be connected to the vehicle either through the iPhone USB cable or the BMW Accessory snap-in adaptor for iPhone. The driver will access the App through the BMW ConnectedDrive or MINI Connected menu, which is displayed on the large, trans-reflective central screen (up to 10.2 inches, depending on model).

The BMW Group Technology Office and GoPro designed the on-board operating menu to streamline the camera’s operation and take full advantage of the integrated environment. Menu choices appear to the left of the screen, and the camera’s actual field of view is displayed in near real-time while the vehicle is stationary.

Yas Marina Bue Metallic vs Santorini Blue

2014-06-07T21:51:00.001-04:00

While at the Cars and Croissants event hosted by BMW of North America, I had the chance to take some comparison pictures of the F80 M3 in Yas Marina Blue vs my Santorini Blue E92 M3.

I'm still reserving judgement on the Yas Marina Blue, but the photos I've seen thus far haven't done it justice. After seeing the paint in person, it's starting to grow on me. I think the black wheels lend a bit more visual aggression to the car which the somewhat pale YMB really needs.

BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS with strong driver line-up for home race – More BMW Z4 GT3s in action in the Ardennes.

2014-06-05T08:57:00.004-04:00

Official BMW Press Release:

Munich (DE), 5th June 2014. As well as the Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE) on 21st/22nd June, BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS is also preparing for the second highlight of the 2014 endurance season: the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps (BE). The Belgian team will field two BMW Z4 GT3s at its home race in the Ardennes on 26th/27th July, and is putting its faith in a strong driver line-up bolstered by BMW works drivers: Jörg Müller (DE) and the two BMW DTM drivers Maxime Martin (BE) and Augusto Farfus (BR) will share one cockpit. In the second car, Team Principal Bas Leinders (BE) will share the driving duties with BMW works driver Dirk Werner (DE) and Markus Palttala (FI).

“After the Nürburgring, the endurance classic in Spa-Francorchamps is not only another highlight of the season for BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS, but also for BMW Motorsport,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “After struggling with technical issues and not achieving the results we had hoped for last year, we are extremely motivated to succeed in this year’s race. You could say that the BMW Z4 GT3 has a score to settle with this classic. BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS will be joined in the Ardennes by numerous other BMW customer teams. It will certainly be another exciting race.”

The provisional entry list for the 24-hour race includes the ROAL Motorsport and TDS Racing teams, as well as Ecurie Ecosse. For these three teams, the Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours also represents the highlight of the Blancpain Endurance Series season.

Quotes from the BMW Sports Trophy Teams Marc VDS drivers:

Bas Leinders (driver and Team Principal): “The 24-hour race in Spa is our home event, which obviously makes it a very special race for us. I am pleased that we are once again able to compete with two very strong driver line-ups this year, thanks to the support of BMW Motorsport. The BMW Z4 GT3 is extremely reliable this season. As a result, we are confident we can make it onto the podium this year, after finishing fourth in 2012 and last year’s misfortune.”

Jörg Müller: “It is great to be back at the 24 Hours of Spa. Together with Maxime Martin and Augusto Farfus, we have assembled a really strong trio. The BMW Z4 GT3 has been very impressive this season, so I am confident we will challenge for a top result in Spa.”

Maxime Martin: “I have been racing at the 24 Hours of Spa since 2006, so it is definitely my home race. I think I have a good chance alongside my team-mates Augusto and Jörg, as they have both experience and speed – everything you need to be successful in an endurance race.”

Augusto Farfus: “I am very much looking forward to taking part in one of the biggest races for GT cars. I see no reason why we shouldn’t have a chance of winning with the BMW Z4 GT3 and such a strong trio of drivers. This will be my first outing at this classic. It means an awful lot to me, as I will have competed at all the major 24-hour races in the world by the end of the weekend.”

Dirk Werner: “The 24-hour race in Spa is one of my favourite races. I have fond memories of my races in 2010 and 2011, both of which I ended on the podium. The track is a highlight for me and, with what is a very durable BMW Z4 GT3 this year and my strong team-mates, we can hopefully be right up there among the front-runners again.”

Markus Palttala: “I really love the circuit in Spa, it’s my absolute favorite. I’ve been a part of the 24-hour-race from the beginning of its GT-era. My first start was back in 2000 and this will be my 14th. So I know what to expect and how to deal with the special challenges of such a marathon. I’ve won the class there, but my dream is to win it outright once in my career. We finished fourth in 2012 and were leading last year with the BMW Z4 GT3, so I know we have a package to do it if we get everything right.”

Rogue Engineering 2014 Open House/BBQ/Dyno Day/Charity Fundraiser

2014-06-03T19:46:00.000-04:00

I've known the owners of Rogue Engineering well before the company came into existence. Mark and Ben are both extremely generous individuals so it came as no shock to me when I heard they were hosting an event to benefit charity. All of the proceeds from this year's charity fundraiser went to support the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI).

As expected, Rogue had an impressive turn out for this year's gathering. The event was not limited to BMW badged automobiles as there were a couple of Nissan GTRs, a Lamborghini Gallardo, C7 Corvette, and quite a few other cars that lacked a Bavarian accent.

Matt Russell of BMW of North America surprised us by stopping by with an Austin Yellow F82 M4. I never got a chance to sit behind the wheel of one at NYIAS, so I didn't hesitate when I was offered a seat this time. Unfortunately I couldn't drive it, but I'm sold. Just take a look at the name of the website... BMW owner for life. Looks like another trip to Germany is in my future once these receive an LCI/ZCP. I'm guessing Santorini Blue again, but Signal Green is also a possibility...

As always I ran into a lot of old friends and made a few new ones. I can't wait for the next one!

Randomly issued NJ plate is strangely appropriate on this car...

Tastefully modded, super clean, Alpine White E46 M3.

I don't recall ever seeing this color in person on an E46 M3. As the owner of a Santorini Blue E92 M3, I return the favor often...

Rogue Engineering's Brilliant White Individual E46 M3 track weapon, partially prepared by IND Distribution.

Alpine White E36 M3 on Rogue's dyno. See, it's not just E9X M3s that came in Alpine...

I'm a fan.

What a machine... There will be an M4 in my future for sure.

Huge thank you to Matt Russell from BMW NA for bringing this beautiful Austin Yellow M4 for everyone to drool over.

Timelessly alluring: 25 years of the BMW 8 Series

2014-06-03T10:37:00.000-04:00

Official BMW Press Release:

Munich. It was streets ahead of its time at launch and maintains an ageless glow to this day, yet a glance at the calendar reveals the disarming truth: 25 years have passed since the BMW 8 Series was presented to the world at large for the first time. The car’s international fan community duly came together last weekend at its Bavarian birthplace to celebrate the anniversary, with events including a spectacular parade of 120 cars at the BMW Group headquarters highlighting their collective adoration of the brand’s exclusive luxury Coupe.

The event was a team effort fronted by the BMW 8 Series club 8er.org (The international 8 Series community) and ClubE31 Worldwide Owners Group e.V. with support from the BMW Club International Office. The 260 participants from 20 countries began proceedings with a tour of BMW Plant Dingolfing, where the BMW 8 Series was produced from 1989 through to 1999. The second highlight of the weekend was the gathering of club members and their cars at the BMW Museum and BMW “four-cylinder” head office in Munich for a combined photo shoot. The BMW 8 Series models fanned out in formation according to paintwork shade, creating an imposing image – and an added attraction for visitors to the BMW Museum and adjacent BMW Welt.

ClubE31 Worldwide Owners Group e.V. brings together more than 2,000 owners and fans of the BMW 8 Series from around the world. The club’s activities include regular national and international meetings and a lively experience-sharing forum. Here, members can find assistance in procuring replacement parts and expertise to help them with the upkeep and care of their cars. The meeting in Dingolfing and Munich attracted enthusiasts from the USA, Iceland and New Zealand, among other countries. Two club representations from Spain, meanwhile, decided to take their cars on a particularly epic journey to celebrate the BMW 8 Series anniversary, driving them more than 1,800 kilometres (approx. 1,120 miles) and almost 2,500 kilometres (1,550 miles) respectively to Bavaria for the event.

The BMW 8 Series stands out as a landmark model in a BMW Coupe lineage that dates back to the 1930s. A clean-sheet design, the car tagged “E31” by its maker launched its challenge to the world’s finest sports coupes with a design oozing avant-garde elegance, arresting performance attributes, an exceptional wealth of innovations and a sprinkling of exclusive luxury. The BMW 850i presented at the 1989 International Motor Show in Frankfurt represented a demonstration of the Munich-based carmaker’s development expertise, revealing not only a cutting-edge new design line but also an unparalleled array of technological details making their automotive debuts. The design of the wedge-shaped body – headlined most strikingly by a long, swooping bonnet (housing retractable headlights), smooth lines, the absence of B-pillars and a steeply cut rear end – showcased the dynamics and grace of the new coupe with equal élan.

The BMW 850i, moreover, followed the BMW 750i luxury Sedan introduced two years earlier as the second post-war German car to be powered by a 12-cylinder engine. The 5.0-litre unit developed 220 kW/300 hp and peak torque of 450 Newton metres (332 lb-ft) to propel the 1,790 kg 2+2-seater from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.8 seconds.

Channelling the engine’s power to the rear wheels was either a six-speed manual gearbox specially developed for the BMW 850i or a four-speed automatic, while its pioneering integral rear axle with five-link suspension was celebrating its premiere in the luxury Coupe. Automatic Stability Control plus Traction (ASC+T), speed-sensitive power steering and the Electronic Damper Control (EDC) system introduced as an option in spring 1990 were among the other details that helped give the BMW 8 Series its distinctive identity as a driving machine. The motoring press heralded the BMW 850i as a “coupe of velvet and silk” and the “perfect symbiosis of power and comfort”. After its first road test in the car, German car magazine “auto, motor und sport” wrote: “BMW has given the 850i all the high-tech weaponry it needs to take top spot.” And turning its attentions to the chassis technology of the BMW 8 Series, “Auto Bild” magazine commented: “It needs to be experienced to be believed, preferably through high-speed corners on the motorway: bumps, expansion joints – shocks that are sure to trigger sudden jolts of adrenaline in other cars – leave the 850i driver totally unruffled.”

Among the other new features of the BMW 8 Series were the belt system integrated into the seats, an electrically adjustable steering column with memory function, an automatically dimming rear-view mirror, remote-control central locking and a high-performance onboard computer. A multiplex electrical system featured for the first time, with data transfer from several different systems via the same conduit enhancing reliability and reducing weight. Both the front and rear side windows of the luxury Coupe could be fully retracted. And, in another new addition, the front side windows were automatically lowered or raised when the doors were opened or closed, improving sealing and reducing wind noise as a result.

A second version of the 12-cylinder engine was added to the range for model year 1993. With displacement increased to 5.6 litres, the engine imbued the flagship BMW 850 CSi model with 280 kW/381 hp and peak torque of 550 Newton metres (406 lb-ft). The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) could now be wrapped up in under six seconds. To take into account those elevated performance figures the BMW 850 CSi was also given a new driving dynamics system, including active rear axle kinematics. Here, the rear wheels respond to the car’s speed and steering angle by turning in the same direction to optimise directional stability through dynamically taken corners and sudden evasive manoeuvres. The electrohydraulic system in the BMW 8 Series was the precursor to the Integral Active Steering available for today’s BMW 7 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 5 Series.

With the launch of the BMW 850 CSi, the existing model was rechristened BMW 850 Ci and given myriad detail modifications. Standard equipment now included an airbag each for the driver and front passenger, infrared remote control and folding rear seat backrests. DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) was available as an option and the automatic gearbox was now equipped with adaptive control. Autumn 1994 witnessed a changing of the guard under the bonnet: the BMW 850 Ci was now powered by a 5.4-litre V12 engine with 240 kW/326 hp, which customers could choose to combine with a new five-speed automatic gearbox. The BMW 840 Ci joined the line-up in 1993. Its 4.0-litre V8 produced 210 kW/286 hp, providing an undeniably sporty entry point into the world of BMW luxury Coupes.

In 1995 the BMW 8 Series inspired British artist David Hockney to add his vision to the BMW Art Cars series. The BMW 850 CSi he created symbolised an artistic take on transparency. Hockney added flourishes such as stylised intake manifolds on the bonnet and silhouettes of the driver and steering column on the driver’s door, while the artist’s dachshund Stanley is painted onto the rear side panel as if he were a passenger in the rear.

A total of 30,621 examples of the BMW 8 Series were produced up to 1999, 24 of which were lavishly hand-built at BMW’s Rosslyn plant in South Africa. For tax reasons, assembling the cars there was more cost-efficient than importing the finished articles. More than two thirds of all the BMW 8 Series Coupes produced were 12-cylinder models, and only one in six were fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox. The top-of-the-line BMW 850 CSi accounted for 1,510 of the overall unit figure. The ultra-high-performance model was available exclusively with a manual gearbox, in keeping with its sporting character.

The tour of the Dingolfing plant also allowed the enthusiasts at the BMW 8 Series meeting to catch up with a spectacular prototype of the luxury Coupe. This one-off, high-performance variant of the BMW 8 Series was completed in 1991 and featured an all-new 12-cylinder engine developing around 550 hp, chassis technology tuned precisely to the power unit and specific body features with optimised airflow characteristics and aerodynamics. Co-developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH and BMW Technik GmbH, this super-sports car was employed as a test bed for technology and innovations. Its engine, for example, served as the basis for the V12 unit powering the legendary McLaren F1.

Truly great high-performance cars cannot be built in the laboratory.

Ever since hurricane Sandy devastated my collection of rare BMW memorabilia I have been trying to slowly restore it. This time I intend to scan in what I can and post it here for other enthusiasts to enjoy. Looking back, my vintage BMW Motorsport brochures didn't do much good sitting in boxes in my garage. I hope the entries in this series can help to preserve some of BMW's history and expose fellow enthusiasts to some of BMW's past that they may have not seen otherwise.

I came across this booklet while browsing eBay, and was immediately taken by the cover's text and artwork. At first I thought it was an old single page advertisement, but upon closer inspection realized that it was actually a beautifully put together BMW Motorsport booklet. The cover alone is frame worthy, the text, graphics, and photography inside were equally well presented.

It's truly a shame that car manufactures no longer seem to pour so much enthusiasm, passion, and quality into their marketing materials.

Please note that all of the booklet's pages were scanned in at the highest resolution that I had at my disposal. Each one can be clicked on which will bring you to a larger version with fully readable text.

My BMW E30 M3 SIGFest 2013 Article was Published in Performance BMW Magazine

2014-02-14T21:55:00.001-05:00

I shot the 2013 BMW E30 M3 SIGFest and did a small write up for my site, I also wrote an article for Performance BMW Magazine. The feeling of seeing my first article in physical print is indescribable. Hopefully this is the beginning of many more.

Original article text below:

SIGFest, is held by the E30 M3 Special Interest Group. Now in its 14th year, the annual Concours D'Elegance was held at Ross Dock Park located in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The park is situated between the sheer cliffs of the Palisades and the Hudson River, with a beautiful view of NYC and the George Washington Bridge. That view and its soundtrack improved tenfold once the E30 M3s started rolling in.

Everyone has a passion, and it is truly a feeling beyond compare when you can share that sentiment with like-minded individuals. Every BMW model has its hardcore enthusiasts, but it's been my experience that the E30 M3 crowd takes it to a level beyond reproach. SIGFest concentrates this passion into something resembling critical mass. This enthusiasm is not without justification. How often do you see an E30 M3, let alone 30 of them?

Speaking to the owners of these cars is always a humbling experience as they are the caretakers of one of BMW's great technical masterpieces. Everything came together in the right combination at the right time to forge the E30 M3 into the gold standard by which new cars still find themselves judged against. While there was no shortage of period correct restorations at this year’s event, there were also some impressively modified examples with enough firepower under the hood to lay waste to most anything without an Italian accent coming from the tailpipes.

My Santorini Blue Individual E92 M3 is one of eight in the United States. It's equipped with Brembo brakes that would look oversized on a 747, an M-DCT transmission with a GTS tune that fires off downshifts resembling a strafing run, and enough carbon fiber to make a Pagani owner envious. Yet walking back to my car after spending a day with those E30s took the luster right out of pressing the engine start button. Always remember to respect your elders.

mfatuation's Santorini Blue M3 gets a paint correction and Auto Finesse ...

2013-12-23T12:22:00.001-05:00

Shortly after taking re-delivery of my car in the US, I sent it off to Supreme Power Parts in California for some fairly serious modifications. It was then shown in Bimmerfest West and a photoshoot in the desert was done by European Car Magazine. Unfortunately, the paint received quite a few swirlmarks in the process, and I was a bit apprehensive to take a orbital buffer to the $5,000.00 Santorini Blue exterior... After much research and a few glowing recommendations by their peers, I decided to make an appointment with Detailers Domain in Norwood, New Jersey.

I had high hopes for the end result, but Phil and the guys that worked on my car blew me out of the water. I picked this car up in Germany, fresh from the factory and prepped by the experts at BMW Welt, yet the work that Detailers Domain did made my jaw drop. Truly superlative attention to detail and the pride that they take in what they do was readily apparent.

Please take a moment to review the full write up on their site, and check out their beautifully edited and shot video below!

BMW 2 Series Test Mule spotted!

2013-12-16T12:26:00.001-05:00

A friend of mine spotted this 2 series test mule in Toms River, NJ this morning. I have very high hopes for this car, and certainly wouldn't mind owning an M235i or the rumored M2!

Frozen Gray E46 M3 and Santorini Blue E92 M3 Shoot

2013-11-23T17:52:00.003-05:00

Took a few shots after Matt Petrie finished shooting my car for an upcoming issue of Performance BMW Magazine. Martino Auto Concepts did an unbelievable job on the Frozen Gray respray, that's right respray, this car is not a wrap and it shows.

My Day Trip to Salzburg, Austria

2013-10-23T12:52:00.001-04:00

Another day trip that I took during my European Delivery vacation. This time to the town of Salzburg, Austria. Words of advice, dress warmly...

Audi S3! I was more excited to see this thing than the R8.

Nein.

NEINFLOWERSTOMPEN!

Audi R8 on the streets of Salzburg.

You poor, poor X1...

Yeah, no.

Mozart's birth house.

I won't be flying into or out of that airport anytime soon.

This was easily the most shocking vehicle that I saw on my entire trip. A Ram 1500 looks a bit out of place in Austria...

"ML 61 AMG" looks legit...

Neuschwanstein Castle, Schwangau, Germany

2013-10-22T13:00:00.000-04:00

During my latest European Delivery vacation, I decided to take another day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle. I had gone there during my previous European Delivery trip for my 2011 M3, and couldn't resist another visit. I used Munich Direct for the tour, the total cost was 39 euros (this included the rail ticket). Not bad for an entire day's worth of sightseeing...

I think I took this shot from Marienbrücke (Marie's Bridge) which was pretty much the worst thing ever. Nothing like standing on an ice-covered bridge, teeming with tourists, while suspended between two mountains and a frozen waterfall. I could have done without the brutal wind gusts as well. Needless to say, my time on that bridge was fleeting.

Who knew the Germans could make such delicious non-pretezelbased food? And this was in a train station!

The castle as seen from the base of the trail.

Beautiful F10 530d. Diesels, diesels everywhere...

Debadged GL 63 AMG?

Audi A3, three door hatch!

Marienbrücke (Marie's Bridge) as seen from the base of the waterfall.

Delicious Quarkbällchen that I ate on the way up on the trail. I cannot recommend these things enough. Nothing like hot balls dough and cheese fresh out of a deep fryer while you're freezing to death on the side of a German mountain. Recipe here if you don't feel like traveling to Germany for them. I'm not sure where to source the Quark cheese though.

It's fairly obvious that I didn't take this with my 5D Mark II...

Why have a sentence when you can just remove the spaces and make it a word? Those efficient Germans!

Opel Wind.

BMW E30 M3 SIGFest 2013 Concours d'Elegance

2013-10-14T13:13:00.000-04:00

SIGFest, one of the largest gatherings of BMW E30 M3s in the world, is held by the E30 M3 Special Interest Group. Now in it's 14th year, the Concours D'Elegance was held at Ross Dock Park located in Fort Lee, New Jersey on Saturday, October 5th, 2013. The park is situated between sheer cliffs and the Hudson River, with a beautiful view of NYC and the George Washington Bridge. That view improved 10 fold once the E30 M3s started rolling in...

The awards were beautifully prepared by Dave at Renewed Finishes.

My Santorini Blue E92 M3 relagated to the non-E30 M3 parking area. Mike from VAC's E46 M3, my E92 M3, Godzilla, and a minivan...

It doesn't get much more rare than a Laguna Green E30 M3 Cabrio. The only think you'll see rarer than this is a steak on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. "IT'S RAW!!!" -G. Ramsay

The juxtaposition between the period correct Buick and the E30 M3's really makes the shot. Or something...

If only modern engines looked half as good as the S14...

E30 M3 Special Interest Group Visits Rogue Engineering

2013-10-06T22:01:00.001-04:00

I spent a few hours with the E30 M3 Special Interest Group while they took a tour of Rogue Engineering's facility in Upper Saddle River, NJ. I've been here countless times, but the machinery that greets you when you walk in never ceases to amaze.

Rogue Engineering's Brilliant White Individual E46 M3 painted by IND Distribution.

Rogue Engineering's Racebrace as shown on their E46 racecar.

VF supercharged E46 M3 w/Vorsteiner hood.

Estoril Blue Brembo calipers behind BBS LM wheels.

Carbon fiber E30 M3 mirrors.

The classic combination of BBS wheels and Brembo brakes.

S62 powered Estoril Blue Z4.

The superlative S62 E39 M5 motor looking right at home in the Z4's engine bay.

I wouldn't mind having either one of these flawless E30 M3s in my garage. Apparently, neither would Rogue.

Individual throttle bodies, the hallmark of "real" M motors.

My Turn...
