Japan disaster– an eye-opener for all

Japan has seen it all in a span of week. It suffered a series of natural calamities accompanied by nuclear meltdown which brought one of the fastest growing nation to stand still. Thanks to social networks and media, everyone of us witnessed the devastating images of them. Being such a technically advanced nation and having the foresight and experience of previous earthquakes,Japan handled the disaster and after effects in best possible way. While Japan recovering, one has to question oneself about their nations that “Are we prepared for this if not bigger? ” . As Japan is on the Pacific Ring of fire where earthquake activity is highest, it has taken preventive measures for minimizing the damage and human loss. But there are many developing and poor nations that are not even prepared for any disaster forget about this magnitude.This unpreparedness is not because of negligence but out of helplessness. By collaborating with developed countries and achieving respected standard of living for all the citizens can only focus them to these problems. Earthquake, Tsunami, Volcano etc. are challenges for entire mankind which can only solved by efforts from all over the world. Instead for working after the disaster, if the countries work together to develop a standard warning system for every country and prevent loss happening at all.

That’s for natural calamities, coming to nuclear or man made disasters, its better to avoid them and invent ways to use renewable resources like wind,solar etc. effectively. Nuclear plants are helpful for energy but always dangerous because if uncontrolled, can lead to not only large human loss but also making the place inhabitable and after effects.Unless there is a way to control it in worst situation like in Japan now, the plants has to be established far in isolated places.We cannot avoid natural calamites but at least we should not create our own.

Disasters are the one of those events where nations work together. Water is the most abundant and most misused resource in the world.As per the reports, 4000 children die of drinking unclean water each day.Unhygienic drinking water is the one of the causes of the most of the deadliest diseases.Its unfortunate to have this situation but need to deal with this as quickly as possible.

Though we are progressing in technology to reach wider range of people, we are still unable to provide basic needs like clean water,food etc., for the entire population of the world.There are many organizations that are trying to help people who lacks clean drinking water.

These last few days are quite an eventful days in Indian History.Wondering how these effect Indian History, let get into details straight away:

Robo : Robo is the one of the most anticipated movies of the year and costliest movie ever from India.It has all the big stars in Indian Cinema like Rajnikanth,Aiswaraya rai,Shankar,A R Rahman etc and technical values from famous studio which involved in films like Avatar,Jurassic park etc.It is sci-fi movie and hoping to watch it in this week.Looking at the teaser videos, it feels like Hollywood movie from India.I hope this rewrite all the records and take Indian Cinema to new heights.

Aadhar : Aadhar or Unique Identification Number Project is the biggest project by Government of India has launched by giving UIDs to 10 tribal people from Maharashtra.This project (headed by Infosys CEO,Nandan Nilekani) provides UIDs to billion people so that there will one card for everything from tax payments to voting in elections.This can reduce corruption and make governance easier.

CWG (Common Wealth Games ) : CWG 2010 is conducted in New Delhi starting this Sunday.It is the one of the biggest sporting events that our country has organized after Afro-Asian games in 2003.There has been many reports of corruption in huge scale while preparing for event,construction and providing facilities.But looking at the snapshots of the stadium and facilities, I am amazed with the work of thousands of engineers and laborers and hope this event will be a success without any hiccups.This event should showcase the true potential of India and use this opportunity for getting a chance to organize Olympics like China in coming years.

Ayodhya verdict : The most awaited verdict by a billion people is finally out.It has no surprises but the real surprise came from people of India. Though the verdict doesn’t favored one community, fortunately there is no violence against it.This showed again that the real Unity in Diversity of India.This is a welcome change that people believing that better India is more important than religion.

All these are showing India not only one of the world’s fastest economies but also a better place to be in.What are your views?

International Peace day

Today (Sept 21) is observed as International Peace day worldwide.This day is celebrated for world peace and cooperation among the countries.On this day, all the countries will cease fire for 24 hours.There will no war or any sort of attack among the countries.Considering many clashes and wars between countries for supremacy or civil wars in many countries for better livelihood, everyone is need of day off from these violent activities.

World Peace day is one of those days which has to be celebrated worldwide like a festival.In 21st century, where world on one side is moving in the rate of knots,on the other side we have wars which causing the progress to slow down.Because of fear of attacks,almost all the countries are investing more in military than in improving living standards.Clashes are mostly because of resource imbalances or cultural differences.Most of these can be eliminated by talk and cooperation between countries.

Military should be used only for defense but not otherwise.As we can see the pattern, all the wars are followed by recessions or economic disasters that are causing unemployment and other problems affecting each and every country.To sum up what the war results in, as German proverb says “A great war leaves the country with three armies - an army of cripples, an army of mourners, and an army of thieves.”

Lets hope there will be peace worldwide throughout the year but not in few specific days.All the countries should start to decrease the military budget and concentrate more on providing basic facilities and education for every individual.Share your thoughts and bye!!!

Literacy – a one time solution to many problems

Sept 8th is celebrated as International Literacy Day. UNESCO started this tradition in 1965 to highlight the importance of education in the welfare of mankind.According to Global Monitoring Report 2008, about 750+ million lack the minimum literacy skills. Being one of the fastest growing economies in recent times, India still constitutes 35% of world illiterate population and has highest number of illiterates in the world.If this is the case in a huge country like India, it must be worse in the countries with low income. As the estimation from UNESCO says it needs additional $16 billion to improve education standards in 46 low income nations. These figures will be worse because of rise in food prices and unemployment caused due to recession.

Education is defined as the accumulating knowledge and passing it through generations in any form.If any society unable to provide minimum education to each and every individual then it can cause disruption in functioning of that society either politically or economically or any other way.Lack of education causes wrong perception or superstitions to grow without any understanding or reasoning and causes all sorts of havoc in the society.World’s deadliest diseases like AIDS,Hepatitis-B etc., are spreading rapidly because of lack of awareness . The countries with low literacy rates are the highest effected ones.Though overall illiteracy is a problem, its female illiteracy % which is more worrying than male %.Now-a-days women are competing equally with the men in every field.So a little encouragement from the society improve these stats.So in an effort to make this progress faster, UNESCO dedicated this years literacy day for that purpose of improving women’s literacy.

Even though there are many initiatives from governments (recently India made education as a fundamental right) and organizations like UNESCO, I think the solution to illiteracy lies in the hands of people like us.Educated people has to contribute in one way or other to get rid of the illiteracy from face of the planet. Everyone have to spend part of our spare time to educate others rather than giving money as donations to the organizations.This reminds me of the quote ‘Time is always precious than money’. As UNESCO sets an ambitious plan of achieving 100% literacy by 2015, its our responsibility to contribute and help it to reach the goal.I think illiteracy is a global problem like Global warming,Terrorism etc., everyone of us has to fight against it irrespective of race,place and culture.

Last weekend was an eventful one having visited Times square again and wax museum for first time. Times Square always gives me immense pleasure and joy looking at the people from every corner of the world.To tell the importance of the place,there is Yahoo! boarding which says ‘place where world checks in everyday’.In Times square , world famous Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is a must-visit place where you can see the statues of renowned personalities who made their mark in the history through their contributions.

There are more movie stars than from any other field . The list of stars that I admire present in the museum include :

iPhone – world in your hand

I got iPhone 4 last week and have already been my must-have companion all along this week whether it may be finding timings of NJ Transit,getting a coupons for NY cruises or in giving directions to a South Indian restaurant. I thought of buying iPhone when I first came to USA but it happened after 2 long years.Its very exciting to have it after such a long time of aspiration.After the purchase of my first computer, iPhone 4 is definitely the notable electronic I used.I think its interface and design is best in the business. I am happy with it without any signal issues that scared me to delay the purchase and thought of sharing some features that caught my eye in a week usage.

First and foremost feature is Facetime. It may be available only on Wi-Fi but the interface and functionality of it is the best of its kind.It never been such easier to talk face to face when moving.Switching between front and back camera while chatting makes you to share surrounding in an eye blink.
Next comes is the iBooks. I am a reluctant reader who reads books when it is needed to. iBooks is making me to look into book more frequently than before. I have started Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and hoping to finish.
Cameras : Two cameras (front and back) of iPhone are valuable components of its hardware. Though back cam as specified is 5 megapixel cam, its quality beats most of the 8 megapixel cameras available in the market.It supports HD video and quality is immaculate.Front cam, which is the real enabler of Facetime , is VGA cam of decent quality.
AppStore : There are as many as 200,000+ apps for iPhone for every purpose from navigation to recreation.To name few useful apps I used, Shazam,Facebook,Firefox Home,Red Laser,Siri etc. are all for free and highly productive.We will see more on essential apps to have in a future post.
Last but not the least that I like is voice mail. Using a voice mail never been that easy for me as I upgraded from Nokia 2630 to iPhone.

Though these are few to point out in iPhone, . As they say,”For every good ,there is a bad that follows it.”, I am disappointed in few areas.I would like to have flash support and longer battery life.Overall in my view, iPhone is the best smartphone in the world now . I would recommend it anytime and must-have experience .Thanks to Steve Jobs and Apple for giving a wonderful product to the world!!!

Simplicity is divine

Simplicity defined to be uncomplicated. This attribute does not mean doing uncomplicated work but doing work in an uncomplicated way. All the greats that I have been admiring since my childhood have a personal trait in common i.e., simplicity. They make their work look so simple that their way is the only way to greatness.Personalities to name a few such as Albert Einstein,Mahatma Gandhi,Sachin Tendulkar etc. are all contributed to their fields in their own way.Let me tell you how these greats said the world that simplicity is divine through their works.

E = mc² by Einstein is the one of the most path breaking equations of all time.Its applications are enormous ranging from PET(Positron Emission Tomography) scans in hospitals to energy calculation in nuclear bombs.The equation’s elegance lies in explaining complicated mass – energy relation in a most simple possible way. Even a non-physicist can understand that as it says ‘under right conditions, Mass and Energy are inter-convertible’. He is an example for Simplicity in expression of thought.

Mahatma Gandhi is an internationally renowned Indian leader who led the only non-violent Independence struggle against Britishers.His principle is ‘ahimsa paramo dharamah ’ (means non-violence is the ultimate duty that can be performed) influenced many Indians irrespective of their culture,religion or race to join the movement and made an empire like Britain to declare independence on August 15 ,1947 after two centuries.His simple life style and principles made him ‘Father of the Nation’. He is an example for Simplicity in life style.

Sachin Tendulkar is the most worshipped cricketer in the past 20 years and greatest batsman after Don Bradman.To sum up his popularity,a quote from his fans ‘In India, Cricket is religion and Sachin is God’.His batting style is simple and compact making very difficult to bowlers all over the world.Timing and placement of shots and grace in the shots make him spectator’s delight.He makes batting look simple that it will never be that easy.He is an example for Simplicity in redefining how sport has to be played.

These few great people are self disciplined and committed to their work that makes their style of work so simple and great. These people always reminds me that ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication that can be done’.So this comes to the end of another post, next time I like to share my experience with my new and first smartphone, iPhone 4.

Once upon a time…

All the good old stories always used to start with those lines.Yes today I feel like sharing a story with you. This story has its humor with wisdom.All the credits for this story has to go to one of my dearest friends.So lets start the story now.

Once upon a time there is a king and an intelligent minister.One day coming back from evening walk with minister, king cut his finger off while closing the door.
In lot of pain he shouted : “Why did it happen to me?”
then minister replied back: “Everything happens for good.”
Listening to minister’s reply made Akbar angry and ordered soldiers to keep minister in jail for improper behavior.
             After few days, one fine morning king went for hunting into forest.While he was hunting for a deer,a group of man eating tribes attacked and caught him. The tired and tied king was brought to their camp and started preparations for cooking him to eat for dinner.Meanwhile, head of the tribe started examining king’s body as they have norms like not to eat a handicap or injured creature etc. Fortunately for king, tribal head found that Akbar doesn’t have a finger which he lost earlier so they considered him to be handicap and released him.
            Coming back to palace with happiness and joy of escaping death, king reminded himself minister’s words of wisdom and released the minister from jail.While talking after a long time,
King :“You are so true that everything happens for good.As I cut my finger on that day, I am alive now.”
             “But I have a question for you.If everything happens for good, what good happened for you by going to jail ?“
Minister (with a smile):“If I would not have gone to jail, I would have come along with you to the forest.They might have killed me after releasing you.So in that way, its good for me to be in jail”.
King appreciated his minister’s wisdom and went to their homes before the dusk.

Moral of story : Everything happens for good.As they say in 3 Idiots (Bollywood movie), “Aal Izz Well”

Dalai lama @ 75 – Spiritual leader with Scientific thinking

Yesterday,I saw an interview of 14th Dalai lama on his 75th birthday by Barkha Dutt and was rightly amazed and amused with simplicity and humor from a spiritual leader.Dalai lama is the head of Tibetan Buddhist monks. As I used to think, it is not the name of the person, it is the title just like Pope for Christians. At present , we have 14th Dalai lama beginning his reign from 1950’s till present.His Holiness shared his experiences throughout his life.Among those, I would like to share a few facts which I found interesting from this elegant,intelligent yet humorous Buddhist monk.

He is very fond of watches and eating non-vegetarian food. As he from Northern Tibet where vegetation is not possible, he has to go for meat as a part of diet. At age 7,
he was presented a watch by Theodore Roosevelt , an American President in 1942. He feels that he is half-Buddhist and half-Marxist. He believes that communism with moral values has a potential to change the world.He has been here in Dharmashala,India for 5 decades and believes that Tibetans are the disciples of Indian Buddhist masters like Nalanda.He is a spiritual leader with scientific inquisitiveness of a common man.

This is small glimpse of a great spiritual leader of our time who preaches non-violence and brotherhood more than religion.I learnt more regarding Buddhism and Tibetan movement through this interview.I always felt that science and spirituality must coexist like mind and heart in our body.Thus, we need more of these kind of spiritual leaders to make this world a better place to live.

Aamir Khan with NDTv – Revenue sharing business model in movies

I like to share gist and my views on that interview. Before getting into details, let me start with an intro of who the person is. ‘Aamir khan’ name speaks for itself in India.Last few years has been dream run for him with movies like Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots.He is one of the few multi-talented people in movies with mix of intelligence and care for masses.He gave an interview regarding the revenue sharing business model that he generally follows in his movies.He talked about inner details of how movie market works from promotion to profit distribution.For his full interview, click here.

Personally, I always felt that profit sharing is the best strategy to have in movie business. As I have grown up in India where Movies and cricket are the main sources of entertainment from childhood till now, I have been following both very closely.Setting cricket aside for another day, movies are entertainers as well as business to make profits in no time. So these profits should be reached to all levels of movie industry who kept time and sweat for the movie. In our usual movie world, movie will be sold to distributors before its release. Depending on the stars craze among local people, movie can be sold to huge amounts (can be even Rs. 100 crores). After the release,
its up to distributors to bear loss or profit. Because of this, distributors suffer a lot if it is high budget movie flop. Movie success always relied on story rather than on star cast in it. So if the quality is maintained , rather than selling it for huge amounts ,producer can sell to small profits and share the profit/loss from collections it gets. Thus, distributors can bear a smaller loss and can recover from it with time and it will be a win-win situation for everyone.

Profit for films is calculated this way:

Gross = All the money generated by movie (collections at box office,satellite rights,overseas etc)

Net = Gross – Entertainment tax (usually ~30 %)

Distributor share = Net – Theater charges (20 – 60%)

Profit/Loss = Distributor share

These equations tell you why distributor takes hit if poor storyline movie is being bought for high price out of speculation . This way I think Aamir way of business in movies is the way for future movies and here to stay.

Today, thought of blogging after a long time and doing first time in US after completion of masters.Its been 2 long years of struggle and joy in Syracuse making life an exciting roller coaster ride till now. Though ,I completed my masters and started the job hunt long back, getting a job for me in this post recession period has been like finding oasis in a desert .Like in desert, I saw mirages of phone interviews from some companies but no fruitful results yet. For making myself not to get disappointed and get lost in this pathetic situation, I am watching 1 movie each day. In that way, covering some decent Brad Pitt’s movies recently. Now its time to watch a movie and call it for the day and till next time…goodbye

It was a day of timepass and struggle with my webcam.I bought a webcam recently and it is making me sick day by day as the drivers are not installing properly in my system.I left that work and installed my new LAN card successfully and it works fine for me.It was the day when one of my friends left our town for going abroad.He is going to Melbourne,Australia for his Masters in Biotechnology.I gave send off to him last night and the day come to an end.

Birth of Universe

Hello,

Yesterday I saw a program in Discovery named "Birth of Discovery".It is fascinating but confusing as well to know about the universe and how it evolved.It all started with Big Bang explosion and a time line used to show the evolution of planets,stars and other extra terrestrial objects in the universe.After the Big bang,the universe is all about energy.Energy is flowing around like a super heated and frictionless liquid.According to Einstein's famous equation E=mc²,mass and energy are inter convertible.Amazingly, after thousands of years,energy slowly started to form matter.This matter combined to form basic elements like Hydrogen and Helium.These elements are sources to form vast variety of elements that we see today.The temperatures fallen from billions of degrees into negative degrees and enabling the planets like Earth to have conditions suitable for life.Thus everything in and around of our planet i.e., water,air,you and me are all formed from the energy after Big bang.

It has been a long halt from last time when I blog.Last week,I went for a tour of 5 days of divinity.It is exciting and joyful but then tiring as well.After a 4 days of worship, went to Hyderabad to meet a schoolmate.On that day,I visited the International airport for the first time and it is interesting and wonderful one.When I return to home,I was tired and very sleepy.After having a good sleep ,I was rejuvenated and back to normal again.At night,I met a Syracuse college mate and had a nice chat about shopping.Thus finishing off the day with Kamal movie.

Today,I went to college for getting my certificates and went to university with my friend.In university,my friends applied for OD after painstaking ride and walk in the university to apply.It was tough and all of us were tired after the process.Then we had nice lunch at 2:30p.m and started back to college to collect TC of my friends.Later we came out of the college in the evening and went to shopping mall for baggage information and got back to home.The day was tiring and end in a sound sleep at night.

It has been much anticipated day with sporting events starting from evening.To start with,it is nice cool sleep which made me to wake up at 9:30a.m.I surfed along with my friend for accommodation in my university in housing site.The search continued for almost 2 hours.All the required information gathered and session suspended for the day.Afternoon started like bore but eventually got excited when my friend called me to play.In evening,I went to his house and had a nice game of cricket.After that ,I rushed to home so that not to miss the most anticipated match between Federer and Nadal in Wimbledon final.This match is very special for both players.For Federer,he will able to cross Bjorn Borg record of 5 straight wimbledon titles and to equal Renshaw's record.For Nadal,he will be the next to Borg who will win French and Wimbledon in the same year.The game started in a big way and had various nail biting moments which made it game of the tournament.However Nadal took hold of the game by taking first two sets by muscling great ground strokes for which even Federer don't have an answer.This is the first time when I saw Federer got angered and made me to realize "Even Federer is a human".After 2 sets,3rd set was interrupted by rain giving everyone a breather in crunch and fabulous encounter between Magician Federer and Spaniard Spartan Nadal.That's how I finished the day and fingers crossed for the much awaited result of final tomorrow.

Hi folks,

This is first post of this blog and can never be right time than today.It is 30 days away for me to leave Land of Diversity and enter Land of Opportunities.The countdown have just started.Today is a normal and pleasant days of mine.I woke up pretty early than I usually did at 9a.m.Morning was a routine session with chatting and orkutting.At evening,friends visited my house and had fine conversation about US preparations.It has been a day of review of Williams sisters final and preview of classic final(Roger vs Nadal).In a brilliant final between William sisters,Venus outclassed Serena in every aspect and giving the audience a fantastic 7th final between them.Thus,finishing off the day with a Venky movie and completing my first day as a novice blogger.
