Sending emails, placing calls and sending letters as well as attending meetings and even holding protests would be more effective than paying up to $60K for a non-binding advisory vote. Finally, the bill as written is not likely to pass and all of this will be moot anyway.

Redirecting the stream deprived neighbors of their water and forced some to drill new wells. Sugarman contested a proposed order to repair the stream and had a hearing last December but according to Bob Lobdell of DSL, "The state was upheld on all counts including the 10,000 civil penalty."

When asked why the county would need to partner with the tribe Main admitted that a co-management agreement with the tribe would cost the county money. The county forest timber management cost is only 10% and a partnership would cost the county up to an additional 40% of the gross.

Now that a bill is being floated by DeFazio that does in fact give management over to the county, Main is now concerned with whether the public wants to co-manage the lands with the tribe. On Tuesday's BOC agenda is an item submitted by Main to, "discuss putting an advisory vote on the ballot, asking if the county should partner with the Coquille Tribe on any timberlands".

It is clear that commissioner opponents, incumbent Bob Main and challenger Randy Sanne share a few common views, in particular, their mutual disdain for the opinions and tactics used by structure advisory committee co-chair, Al Pettit. Speaking at the Americans For Prosperity meeting this week, Sanne fielded a question about the recommendation to hire a county manager. The recommendation is not popular with AFP members and it opened the door for more comments about the often insulting Al Pettit.

DeFazio bill proposes county not tribal management of Coos Bay Wagon Road lands

What is immediately notable about the bill is the proposed handling of the Coos Bay Wagon Road lands which proposes giving management not to the Coquille Tribe but rather to the county. The county may choose to contract with the tribe or any other public or private timber management. Evidently, Parry's lobbying didn't benefit the tribe at all.

Presenting perhaps the first real budget plan I have seen in a local campaign, Sanne demonstrated to a group attending an Americans For Prosperity meeting how the county, using its forest fund and the average annual property tax increase to meet its current level of services.

in the absence of a public vote, it is not possible for the public to ascertain whether a majority of members support the Structure Committee’s recommendations. Similarly, in the absence of a public vote, the public cannot identify the individual committee members who support or oppose the Structure Committee’s recommendations. The public needs and deserves this information, particularly in light of recent events suggesting the Structure Committee’s recommendations do not have the unanimous support of members.

Sanne to discuss the county’s budget at Americans for Prosperity meeting

Randy Sanne, candidate for commissioner position number one, will be speaking tomorrow evening at the Americans for Prosperity meeting to be held at the ESD building in North Bend. Sanne will present his budget plan and explain how close the county os to a balanced budget already. Sanne is expected to provide a detailed analysis that belies recent claims made by the structure advisory committee co-chair, Al Pettit, that the county is close to insolvency.
