An impassioned plea from Bettina Arndt...

Ok, all you people who care about what is happening to men and boys in this country.

I’m spending many hours trying to organise screenings of The Red Pill – partly as a free speech issue and more importantly because I think the movie does an excellent job showing how rarely we properly address the problems in men’s lives. [It also covers the issue of male victims of family violence really well - ed.]

I URGENTLY NEED YOU TO HELP ME GET PEOPLE TO BUY TICKETS! IF NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE BOOK, THE SCREENINGS WON'T GO AHEAD.

We have two Sydney bookings now on the Fan-Force sites. Please tell everyone you know who lives in Sydney to book in.

WEDNESDAY 26TH APRIL, 6:30 PM DENDY CINEMAS NEWTOWN

https://fan-force.com/screenings/the-red-pill-dendy-newtown-nsw/

We have managed to get Palace cinemas to back down and agree to show the movie.

Please books tickets and get your friends to do likewise. PLEASE DO SO URGENTLY, AS SOON AS YOU CAN!!!

We also have another screening booked in:

Wednesday the 10th of May at 6:30pm at Hoyts Cinemas Broadway, NSW.

https://fan-force.com/screenings/the-red-pill-hoyts-broadway-nsw/

This is a bigger cinema and we need to sell 74 more tickets by April 27 for this one to happen.

Note we also have screenings booked in for on Fan-Force for Maroochydore Qld and Adelaide Hills SA – and really need booking to come in quickly for those.

See here… https://fan-force.com/screenings/theredpill-event-cinemas-maroochydore-qld/

And also here…. https://fan-force.com/screenings/the-red-pill-wallis-cinemas-piccadilly-sa/

If you have friends who live in these areas please alert them to these screenings and get them to book in fast!

Note - people need to book in using a credit card but will only be charged if the screenings go ahead.

In the next few days we will have screenings planned for other places like Perth and Melbourne. I will put links to all new venues on my website.

(Note – do have a look of my new website, which finally has all my men’s issues material prominently displayed – courtesy of the wonderful Scott Korman. He’s a great bloke who knows all about websites, IT, videos, podcasts etc. He happened to contact me to make a comment about the Red Pill and ended up spending a whole week helping with the website and is now working with me to help pull together the Fan-Force screenings.)

I am about to embark on a media blitz getting everyone I can think of to try to help me get the word out in the traditional media but you have to help with social media because that is not my thing.

Help end all violence against women, men, children and animals

We are living in a society that is in the midst of an epidemic of domestic violence and during Men’s Health Week this month it is time that men unite to SAY YES to Family Peace and start to put in place actions for ending all violence against women, men, children and animals.

Whilst violence in our community affects all ages and genders, there has very understandably been an emphasis placed on raising awareness of violence against women because two-thirds of the victims of domestic violence in Australia are women. As a result, many people tend to think of domestic violence as something that happens to women perpetrated by men only - but this is not the case. Both men and women are capable of violence in relationships. Domestic violence against men is under-studied, under-reported and they become the hidden victims of domestic violence.

There are real differences between genders in the reporting of violence and the affects of the violence on women and men and we need to appreciate this and open the discussion up on these differences and similarities. As well as the effects of violence on men, the negative impact on children can impair their behavioural, cognitive, emotional, and social development. Turning a blind eye to violence in the family is neglecting the needs of children who witness violence between their parents.

The fact is that most Australian men - some 98% of all men, manage to get through their day without being violent or abusive to their loved ones. Not only do they manage this feat on any particular day; but they are loving husbands, partners and fathers day in, day out, week after week, year after year. The Relationships Australia "Relationships Indicators Survey 2006" found that 1% of respondents said that violence was an issue that was negatively impacting on their partner relationship.

During Men’s Health Week we believe that the community needs to be informed about violence against women, men, children and animals that is occurring in some Australian families every day. A free Community Forum will take place to look at the current situation of domestic violence in Australia, look at what forms this can take and what the differences and similarities are for men and women who are affected by violence and abuse.

We also want to raise awareness of violence against animals caught up in domestic abuse situations and the services that you can access to protect pets from danger.

We have a very knowledgeable panel of speakers and plenty of time for discussion in a safe environment.

Our society has the capacity to support all victims of family violence just as we support all victims of cancer, or any number of other impacts upon people's health and wellbeing.

Deakin public health policy seminar: DOES MEN’S HEALTH POLICY DESERVE OUR SPECIAL ATTENTION?

The Deakin public health policy seminar series is targeted at senior researchers, academics and policy makers.

Date: Tuesday 10 June 2014 Time: 12pm for 12.30pm until 2pm (sandwich lunch) Location: Conference Room, Deakin City Centre, Level 3, 550 Bourke Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Panelists: Dr Carol Holden, Tass Mousaferiadis, Dr Daniel Perkins

Does men’s health policy deserve our special attention? Despite poorer health outcomes and lower health service engagement there are few specific initiatives focusing on men’s health. Why do men not access healthcare more regularly and should health services do more to improve the engagement of men? Alternatively, why is there a need to focus on men’s health policy separately when the health care system cares predominately for male focussed diseases and chronic conditions?

Dr Carol Holden is CEO of Andrology Australia, a commonwealth funded ‘centre without walls’ that brings health and education experts together to raise the awareness of male reproductive health disorders and their associations with chronic disease. Carol has published research internationally and in 2012 completed a Masters of Public Health with a major in health policy analysing the National Male Health Policy.

Tass Mousaferiadis is Men’s Program Leader, with beyondblue. Tass has advised state governments on public health policy and has extensive governance experience having served on Boards of multiple health and community services. Particular areas of interest include primary health care, the acute hospital sector, mental health, and alcohol and drugs services.

Dr Daniel Perkins is Senior Policy Advisor in the Diversity Policy and Projects Unit at the Victorian Department of Health. Daniel is responsible for the forthcoming Victoria’s men’s health policy and also the development in 2010 of Victoria’s first Men’s health and wellbeing strategy. Previously he was Research and Policy Manager in the Social Research Centre of the Brotherhood of St Laurence, leading work relating to social inclusion issues.

The first of the University of South Australia Male Studies courses planned for 2014 is now accepting applications for enrolment.

You can find information about the first of the courses on offer – the Professional Certificate in Male Health and Male Health Promotion here.

You can also download a Registration Form, which must be completed if you are intending to undertake one or both courses in 2014, from here. Processing of enrolments will commence early in the New Year.

Students may enrol in the entire Professional Certificate in either Study Period 2 (Semester 1) or Study Period 5 (Semester 2), which means completing both courses in one semester. Alternatively, students may elect to complete only one course in each of the study periods. If both courses are completed in 2014 then students will be awarded the Professional Certificate for that year. We recommend students complete Course 1 (Male Health in Perspective) before commencing Course 2 (Male Health Promotion) should they elect to separate the courses.

The University would prefer to receive payment prior to courses commencing, so participants planning to complete both courses in one semester should pay for both prior to course commencement. For students enrolling in courses in different semesters, payment can be made prior to the start of each semester. Payment details are on the Registration Form.

We look forward to seeing you in 2014.

If you know of anyone who you think may be interested in undertaking one or other of the courses on offer, please feel free to forward this information on, including to international colleagues.

The Course web page will not be available until the beginning of 2014, so for further information please Gary Misan directly (details below).

Glen Poole of the UK-based consultancy Helping Men, is on a mission to spread awareness and understanding of the barriers men and boys face and give more professionals the skills and knowledge they need to help men and boys overcome these barriers and access help and support services.

Head or Heart?

As men we are generally comfortable using our heads. We think order, logic, process. What of matters of the heart: love, soul, honour, compassion?

Man Alive is a men's gathering near Berry over the weekend 13-15 September. Man Alive invites you to come and explore what it means to live with Wholeheartedness—that place where head and heart work together!

How it all works

The idea is to let you choose how you want to participate, and which of the wide-ranging selection of activities offered during the weekend you want to involve yourself in. The choice will be yours; whether this might be to immerse yourself in deep personal enquiry, or to stay relaxed and chilled—or both!

Why go to a Men's Gathering?

Throughout Australia and internationally the Men’s Gathering has become an enduring and very important forum where men from a wide range of backgrounds come together to connect, explore and have fun in a non-threatening, non-judgemental and safe environment.

Man Alive South Coast is open to all men from any background, religious, political or sexual persuasion. It is a safe, non-judgmental, supportive space where men can explore the connections, modalities, challenges and exercises that facilitate real and lasting change.

Who attends a Men’s Gathering?

There is no ‘type’ of man who comes to these events.

The men who come are of all ages and at all stages of life; they come from all socio-economic groups, cultures, creeds and nationalities. If there is anything that they do have in common it is the desire to see the growth of authentic and responsible communities, and their belief that the first step towards this goal is for them to take responsibility for their own growth.

Their desire is to learn, share and connect with other men who share this vision, and from this platform invite real change for themselves as well as for their ‘community’ – be it local, national or planetary.

Young men (under 18)

If you wish to invite your son, or a young man you are mentoring, to Man Alive you must consult the Organising Committee as there are strict conditions on the attendance of young men. A fee of $110 (incl. GST) applies to young men who are accepted for attendance. Contact Scott on 1300 13 88 50.

Financial support

A limited number of subsidised places are available from the donations made by other men attending Man Alive. If you are receiving CentreLink payments and would not be able to attend Man Alive without support, up to half of your registration fee can be subsidised this way. Subsidised men repay the gathering by helping set-up on Friday, pack-up on Sunday afternoon, and in the kitchen throughout the weekend. In the event applications exceed donations, subsidies will be awarded in order of need. Please call Scott on 1300 13 88 50.

About the Venue

Man Alive is held at Berry Sport & Recreation facility, 2km from Berry which is 60km south of Wollongong on the South Coast of NSW. The complex is in a rural setting with impeccable facilities. Accommodation is modern dorm style with 2, 4, or 6 beds.

I am in awe of the way the team created such an environment of respect, support, compassion, connectedness and openness. I was impressed with the strength of their gentleness and their smooth teamwork in achieving a splendid weekend. It was truly love in action... love as a verb!!! I am equally in awe of the quality of the 55 other participants. What an extra ordinary group of men.

I was touched to the core by father-son interactions of those who were there with sons, not the least of which was mine with the man who encouraged me, his father, to be involved.

I have learned much and grown from the whole experience.

It was my first time at a gathering for men that focused on men being themselves. Today I am feeling so alive (most appropriate title for such a happening) and have spent today feeling the joy, at times close to tears as yet another recollection or new insight into something someone said or did drops like a pebble into my already overflowing heart.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Tuesday 24 September 2013
7.00am for a 7:30am start - 9.30am
National Press Club of Australia
$70.00 per person

The Menslink Business Breakfast is a great opportunity for leading Canberrans to show their support for a truly local charity and a great cause. Now in its seventh year, the breakfast is an ideal networking event for anyone interested in supporting young men across our region.

Over the past eleven years, Menslink has supported over a thousand young men through their adolescence to become contributing, productive members of society. Yet the statistics are still stacked against young men and we need your assistance to help turn them around. Young men are overwhelmingly represented in adverse violence, crime, school and university retention rates, while suicide remains the leading cause of death among young males aged from 15 right through to 45.

Our goal at Menslink is to provide positive role models and support for young men as they go through the turbulence of their teenage years. With one in five teenagers no longer living with their father, the need for Menslink’s services are greater than ever. Buying a ticket – or even signing your organisation up for a table of ten – is a great way to hear firsthand about the work we do and from these interesting speakers.

Men’s Health in NSW Planning Meeting August 13 1pm – 3.30pm

Conference Room B Level 4 Ozanam Learning Centre, 99 Forbes Street Woolloomooloo

Dear MHFNSW Members and Supporters,

The NSW Ministry of Health will not be replacing the current NSW Men’s Health Action Plan with another plan or policy. New South Wales was the first government in the world in 1999 to produce a men’s health policy, which was followed in 2009 by the current NSW Men’s Health Action Plan which expired at the end of June this year. We know do not have any men’s health policy, plan or framework in place.

They have also announced that the Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre (MHIRC) based at Richmond in the University of Western Sydney will not have their current funding renewed as it has been since 1999 – instead men’s health work in NSW will be put out tender. This new tendering approach could spread men’s health and wellbeing work to potentially many organisations without experience in men’s health work and without any network or central organising body.

There can be no doubt that the current state of men’s health in Australia is very poor compared to women’s health. Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that's five men a day, on average). Accidents, cancer and heart disease all account for the majority of male deaths and males die five years earlier than women from many preventable illnesses. MHIRC focuses particularly on the health status of marginalised or disadvantaged males - like Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, unemployed men, separated men, incarcerated men, new dads and other males who may find themselves at risk of increased stress and therefore poorer health outcomes.

NSW was the leader in implementing a men’s health policy which has been the template for other policies at a national level both in Australia and Ireland. Why would NSW cease to fund the body they have worked with for over 14 years and which has, at little expense, brought considerable acclaim and positive media attention to the State?

MHIRC has an international reputation for working men’s and boys’ health. They have been consulted by, have held joint policy workshops with the Men’s Health Forum of England and Wales and been consulted by the European Men’s Health Forum, the US Men’s Health Network, and the International Society of Men’s Health on issues and policy around male health. MHIRC’s experiences of coordinating Men’s Health Week in Australia has provided a template for how other organisations could coordinate such a week. MHIRC has achieved this for comparatively little money (less than the cost of 2 hospital bed nights per year).

There can be no doubt that the current state of men’s health in Australia is very poor compared to women’s health.

It's an opportunity for each man to feel the importance of learning to honour his own capacity to become more present, sit deeper within his truth, connect to his heart, offer his wisdom, and feel his connection to mother earth.

The Fire Circle is also a place where men of all ages are brought together. The purpose of this is to support the older men to continue being valuable in the community, and to offer younger men, teenagers and boys a place where they can feel accepted for who they are, and learn from the life experience and collective wisdom of their elders.

The Fire Circle is designed to support you to develop your sensitivity and awareness to the earth, to each other and also to our differences. We will prepare ourselves for entry into the fire circle where we sit and take part in open sharing, we learn the art of respectful communication and powerful listening, and we become familiar with the guidelines of circle work. We also learn about the lightness of not taking ourselves too seriously, and we are encouraged to have fun, laugh and enjoy simply being together.

Young men - There is also deeper intention for the boys and young men. Within this safe and confidential environment, an awareness of self and the other is heightened. Responsibility for each person’s impact on others is increased. When a young man is respected and listened to without judgment, his capacity for inner resilience increases exponentially. In the Fire Circle the presence of older men from the community, also fosters a non-confrontational and reciprocal mentoring environment.

The Fire Circle is being held in Newcastle and will take place once a month. Bookings MUST be made, LIMITED places available!

These gatherings are also an opportunity to receive important teachings about men's rites of passage that offer guidance into their masculine potential.

Warren Farrell is an American educator, activist and author of seven books on men's and women's issues. He came to prominence in the 1970s as one of the leading male thinkers championing the cause of second wave feminism, and serving on the New York City Board of the National Organization of Women (NOW). However, when NOW took policy positions that Farrell regarded as anti-male and anti-father, he continued supporting the expansion of women’s options while adding what he felt was missing about boys, men and fathers. He is now recognized as one of the most important figures in the modern men's movement.
In 2009, a call from the White House requesting Dr. Farrell to be an advisor to the White House Council on Women and Girls led to Dr. Farrell creating and chairing a commission to create a White House Council on Boys and Men. The multi-partisan commission consists of thirty-five authors and practitioners (e.g., John Gray, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Michael Gurian, Michael Thompson, Bill Pollack, Leonard Sax) of boys' and men's issues. They have completed a study that defines five components to a "boys' crisis," which has been submitted as a proposal for President Obama to create a White House Council on Boys and Men.

Often you'll see campaigns that aim to shock, scare, compel or otherwise encourage people in the community to do 'more of this and less of that'.

We think that there is a real opportunity through Men's Health Week to empower people on the frontline of health to work with and reach out to local men and boys and find out what can they can mutually achieve to live more healthy lives where and as they live.

Local communities are the best placed to take a stand on the health issues that result in statistics like 'five times more males than females take their own lives each year' and 'men can expect to live four years less than women.'

So, what do we recommend?

Health services and organisations, workplaces, clubs and communities should work together to create events and promotions that encourage men to remain active in aiming for good health. This means involving blokes in creating events that are fun, non-threatening and an enjoyable way to lead into better health.

Men and their families and friends should take some time to actively plan for better health this year. There's plenty of information, a host of health-related apps for health and wellbeing and many qualified professionals (including your GP!) who can provide advice specific to your situation.

Most of all, don't ignore your health. If something's not right, get it checked.

What are we aiming for in Men's Health Week?

To create a showcase of events that worked directly with men and boys in their own communities about all aspects of physical, emtional and social health and wellbeing

To help services run promotions, events and discussions with local men and boys in their communities for mutual benefit

To promote systems that build male health and uncover the kinds of practices that work for men and boys.

What is the 'Health Snapshots' theme about?

'Health Snapshots' is about showcasing the diversity, range and variety of different events put on during the week around Australia and showing the community what's needed to improve male health. An essential part of this approach is about uncovering 'male-friendliness' in services - that is, the things that services are doing that actually work for men and boys. Things like being open so that they can come in after work, or showing men that they are ready and prepared for them.

What 'male-friendly' means is "Is our service actually welcoming and helping men and boys to achieve better health?".

As more events are listed on the Men’s Health Week website, you can see what’s happening around the country as we get closer to June. Hundreds of men found support through these meetings. Mark is now assisting SAMSN to run similar groups; each group will have two experienced facilitators to guide the two-hour meetings that run for eight consecutive weeks.

No matter what the details of your abuse, you can contact SAMSN about joining. Acceptance is an important feature of their joint recovery so the groups are open to men from different cultures and sexual orientation. There are clear guidelines to ensure confidentiality and a structure that ensures the whole focus of the groups is SAFETY.

Men who have completed one of the 8 week groups can continue to use the support of other Survivors. SAMSN men meet once a month to continue their shared journey at relaxed meetings with the same support, same safety and same mateship. “Don’t let those feelings of isolation back into your life,” says Mark Griffiths. “Keep in contact with SAMSN and in helping yourself, you will help SAMSN grow so it can help other men like yourself.”

If you decide you want to join a group, one of the psychologists who will be facilitating the group will get in touch, ask you some basic questions and outline how the group functions.

Participants who have a GP referral will be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $20.45 per session. SAMSN is happy to recommend GPs if you require one.

Comments from SAMSN 8 week group participants:

“The privilege of being heard and treated as a valuable being among others is an enormous gift that life doesn’t readily deliver. It makes it possible to be more who you really are.”
Bran, 41

“The group has made me a much more confident and stronger person.”
Trev, 46

“Hearing other people’s stories, the similarity of emotions and effects … It has made me realise that my feelings are normal after what I have been through. It has given me more confidence. I highly recommend it.”
Talal, 36

“My anger is now directed outwards at the man that abused me instead of at me. I can now see how the abuse has affected me, I have stopped abusing myself! I have the courage to tell people I am a survivor.”
Mark, 40

“This has helped me heal a very difficult, complex wound that I have carried since childhood. It has given me the opportunity to look at something I have kept pretty much to myself and has helped me to heal.”
Jonno, 40

“Just knowing that I am not alone, that other guys have gone through what I have and can understand how I feel is so powerful! I only met these guys eight weeks ago, but we have known each other all of our lives.”
Stu, 51

Rural and remote communities are at the centre of the mythology and cultural ethos of Australia. Most of us have indulged nostalgic and sentimental thoughts of the outback and life in the bush – helped along perhaps by a film we’ve seen. But the reality of life for many people in rural and remote Australia is quite another story – and one that needs to be told. The fifteen programs in the Living Outback series will draw out the reality of life in rural and remote communities, in order to highlight their needs and struggles, but as well their successes and dogged determination to somehow shape a new way forward – a new future for themselves.

Victims No Longer Weekend #7

Friday 1 March, 6pm – Sunday 3 March, 2pm

South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA) invites male survivors of sexual abuse/assault to participate in a residential retreat weekend facilitated by Mike Lew, the world renowned author of ‘Victims No Longer, The Classic Guide for Men Recovering from Sexual Child Abuse’, & ‘Leaping Upon the Mountains’.

If you are interested in taking part in an incredible healing journey, please join us. No longer forced to suffer alone, survivors and professionals continue to develop resources and support systems that move the recovery process forward.

This weekend workshop is for non-offending adult males survivors of sexual abuse and rape. It provides a variety of healing activities: sharing of stories, writing exercises, anger work, group discussions, shared creativity, relaxation and even fun in a safe, nurturing environment.

The event is for men who are actively engaged in recovery work, and is not a substitute for therapy/counselling. A letter of recommendation from your counsellor/therapist or support organization should accompany your registration. Considerable attention has been put into creating a safe, nurturing environment respectful of people’s needs

The weekend focuses on the reality of recovery as revealed by male survivors.

The workshop will be held in central Victoria at:
Derby Hill Blue Light Youth Camp, Phoenix Street, Maldon, Victoria 3463

The fee of AU$400 (inc. GST) covers accommodation and all meals. A deposit of AU$50 is required with your booking, with the balance payable by 15th February 2013 (with no refunds after 25th February 2013). Progressive advance payments welcome, following an Invoice request. No one will be turned away through inability to pay in full. A contribution to enable others to attend would be very welcome.

From the Men's Health Information and Resource Centre at the University of Western Sydney.

2013 is shaping up to be a huge year for people working in male health. There's plenty on!

1. The eternal question: how do we get men to become involved in programs?

Not surprisingly, this is one of the most common questions as organisations consider how to meet the health needs of males. Engaging Men is an important training event to be held in Newcastle on March 14 and 15.

At just $400 for a full two-day program, you'll come away being a better worker with an improved ability to reach out to men and help them help themselves. It's the kind of event that will pay for itself just in improved attendance at your own events (think Men's Health Week)!

Find out the details >>

2. What actually works in male health programs? What have other people done that has succeeded?

Lots of people are doing lots of good work in male health. We set out to capture some of the results of this work through our new clearinghouse, MENGAGE. Usually when an organisation releases a report, they also issue a media release, maybe some photos, a summary document, maybe a video or recording. Normally, these items are distributed across their website.

What we do with MENGAGE is create a profile that links to these resources from one page. It's an easy, free way to complement your own website and help other services make better use of your hard work.

Find out the details >>

3. Lots of talk about Closing The Gap and the health of Aboriginal people.

The Shed at Mount Druitt in NSW has become a safe and trusted place where men and their families can come to access the kinds of help they need during difficult or not-so-difficult times.

We thought it was about time to tell the inside story of the work of The Shed. Our new 12-page ebook is a personal account of individual and community efforts to reduce suicide in their own community.

4. Three 'Save The Dates' you should diarise...

Here are three important dates for you to put in the diary. These are ideal development opportunities for services to better meet the needs of men and boys:

Put this one in your diary - we're pulling together a unique event focusing on the transition of boys from school into the big, wide world. Thursday May 2nd 2013 in the Sydney CBD.
