When we went there, we ordered an assortment platter and Mofongo. We actually got the Mofongo with chicken, and the chicken was absolutely mouth-watering. But the Mofongo was a different matter– I dodn’t like it… I LOVED IT!!!! It came with a home-made broth, and it was like nothing I ever tasted before! My father also ordered some conch, which he informed me was delicious.

When you go to Benny’s make sure to order one of the desserts. They are awesome!

If you’re looking for a place where you can have your fill of sushi, then Hiro’s Sushi Express is the place to go. This restaurant is only a few blocks south of Lincoln Road on Washington Avenue and may be easy to miss, but if you keep your eyes open you’ll find it soon. Once you get in, there will be a plentiful menu waiting for you, and I guarantee that you’ll have a hard time choosing what’s your pick. When my family went, we ordered the Egg Roll, Spinach & Shittake, Chicken Yakitori (this dish includes fish eggs, but my Dad chose to take them out), Dragon Roll, and Volcano Roll. I’m not a seafood person, so I did not taste all these dishes, but my sister and father heartily recommended all these dishes.

The bathroom was tidy and clean, and our food was brought to us promptly. Hiro’s Sushi Express’s phone number is (305) 531-6068, and they offer take out, delivery, and catering.

Hours of operation:

Mon-Fri: 11am-2am
Sat-Sun: 1pm-2am

If you ever want a gratifying portion of delicious chocolate, then Schokolad Chocolate Factory is exactly the place to go. When you think about this, usually your first thought is that only a big portion is filling. But this “home-made” chocolate is able to satisfy. And to make your first visit special, they give you a taste from the very chocolate machine! All the chocolate is kosher, and they make different molds for holidays. Since my mom and my sister and I visited shortly before Mother’s Day, they had many beautiful molds made for celebrating that holiday. When we went to the back of the shop, we saw many other things. We saw a chocolate tool set, swan, and even a chocolate house that was labeled as My Chocolate House! But when we went this time, we had gelato. I had German Chocolate, my sister had Capuccino, and my mother had Mango. But that’s not all that they have to offer. They also make truffles, chocolate turtles, almond bark, chocolate-covered pretzels, cookies, cherries, and fruit dipped in chocolate!

Looking for a weekend getaway for the entire family? Just 3 and half hours away from Miami, there is fun and adventure awaiting! Miami locals and tourist alike will enjoy an eight mile trek down the Peace River, from Arcadia in Central Florida. This is the real lazy river, but watch out! You will see the natives: turtles, alligators, fish and more! Two canoe rental companies are Canoe Safari and Canoe Outpost. For the less adventurous or time-contrained, there are canoeing opportunities closer to Miami in Oleta State Park.

And for homeschooling-minded people: check out the Ice Age fossil adventures organized by the Creation Science Institute. Arcadia, Florida, is also known as Bone Valley, for its rich deposits of fossil bones — including those of the Sabor Tooth Cat, Columbian Mammoth, Giant Sloth, and Megalodon Shark. For more information, call 800-882-0278 or visit www.creationstudies.org.

Last October, Morton’s Steakhouse opened in Miami Beach. While their steak is not bad, it is definitely not worth the $15 valet parking, even if their motto is “the best steak anywhere.” The famous “onion bread” wasn’t bad either, but it isn’t anything to write home about. Do I sound like I ‘m complaining? In honesty I expected more. It’s hard for this restaurant chain to compete here when the public can get just as good for less or the same at other restaurants. Our server was great– prompt, friendly and knowledgeable; Morton’s gets high marks for training their staff well. The presentation of the menu was too cool; especially the live lobster on a platter! We were also entertained by the unexpected fire from the oven in the open kitchen. The black leather seats were comfortable, but I thought it odd that they provided no butter knife (and expected us to use the steak knife to butter our bread?!).

Overall, the food was not necessarily better than the high-end competition. Smith & Wollensky, The Forge, Joe’s Stone Crab, Houston’s– these places don’t have anything to worry about. We tried some other things on Morton’s menu. The steamed asparagus were a bit stringy, and the broiled sea scallops wrapped in bacon were acceptable. The culinary highlight of the evening was the sauteed button mushrooms which were absolutely fabulous. The baked five-onion soup tasted all right, again nothing spectacular. The raspberry souffle was a letdown, baked well on top but slightly undercooked in the middle. So this restaurant gets a mixed review.

For those who like the outdoor café atmosphere without the crowds of South Beach, checkout Balans Restaurant in Brickell. A quick walk from the Miami Metromover, the Brickell area has recently expanded to include many quaint stores, art galleries and a number of yummy eateries. The cuisine at Balans is international modern, including luscious breakfast selections served until 5pm and fresh eclectic entrees for every palate. For lunch I ate a colorful African chicken salad that was full of curry flavor paired with light and fluffy taboule. My kids loved the burgers and fries, but careful: the portions are substantial. Newcomers will get a kick out of the bathrooms with glass walls that transform from clear to opaque when in use. Afterward, you can enjoy strolling around to see some beautiful sculptures, including a gigantic depiction of Samson Agonistes.

Trying to get last minute tickets to the Super Bowl is next to impossible. We do not advise that you buy tickets from anyone on the streets in Miami. Nothing against Miami; just realize that there are going to be hundreds of crooks ready to take your cash if you are fool enough to let them and you might end up with counterfeit tickets.

Here are some tips we found:

Beware of online auctions, but if you do use eBay to buy tickets, make sure that the seller has a long history of customer satisfaction and credibility.

Ask for photos of the tickets. Try to compare them to real ones.

Don’t buy tickets from anyone outside the U.S.

If you are buying a package deal with travel, verify that the game tickets are included with the travel package.
