Wondering where to take your family (or friends) for a quick, yummy meal in Miami Springs? Well, if you’d like a new spin on pizza or salad, make sure to check out Original Big Tomato, voted “Best Healthy Fast Food” by Miami New Times.

Original Big Tomato is located right in the downtown circle. You may have difficulty choosing from the long menu, which includes a variety of gourmet pizzas, French “boule” salads (salad served in a bread bowl), wraps, panini sandwiches, and soups. Once you get past some of the “cheesy” names of menu items, you’ll find there’s something for every tastebud, including vegetarian, California-style , Jamaican jerk, Mexican, and of course Italian. You can even request whole wheat crust for an extra charge.

My personal favorites are the Big Tomato’s Most Popular pizza (#3 on the menu) and the Greek Salad (#27). We bought a 10-inch pizza pie and a salad, and had more than enough food for three persons. The dining area is a bit small, but those who prefer more room can always take-out and eat at the grassy circle across the street. There’s even a quaint, white gazebo for you romantics! And if you have a sweet tooth, don’t forget to try one of Hope’s delicious cookies; my mom says Hope’s Royale is the bomb!

The bathrooms and dining area are kept clean and the employees are polite. Check the website bigtomatopizza.net for discounts. Catering is available if you’re planning a party, and there’s also the “original” location in Pinecrest.

Enjoy!!!!!!

If you want to get away from the South Beach crowd, then try Suvi Thai and Sushi Restaurant in Miami Springs.

My father loves spicy food, and he decided to try the Tum Yung Goong soup with medium spice. Even though he LOVES spicy food, it was still too spicy for him!!Even if you LOVE very spicy food, I would recommend trying the mild spice before trying the hot spice that this restaurant features.

My mom and I shared an order of spring rolls (four small pieces in an order), and I ate the pad thai (rice noodles) with shrimp and chicken. My mother got the ginger chicken with vegetables. My father enjoyed the Tom Yung Goong soup and the seafood Sunomono salad (with chunks of octopus–eeek!). My sister chose the shrimp fried rice and shared some of my pad thai. My mom and my sister said the Thai iced tea was creamy and not too sweet. And do not forget the best part: DESSERT!! We had the Thai donuts, and I hope all the other desserts were as yummy as it was.

My family sat on a raised platform with pillows (a cultural feature that some Thai restaurants provide), but there are also many booths and regular tables that you may choose instead. When I walked into the door, I was amazed at how clean and spacious the dining area was. The servers were extremely polite, and the chef even came out to greet us before we left!

The bathrooms are very well-kept, and prices are moderate. So go off the beaten path and check out Suvi at 5683 Nw 36th Street in Miami Springs, just behind Miami International Airport.

If you’re a fan of German comfort food, checkout Heidi’s Gasthaus, located at 1674 SW 57th Avenue, on the edge of Coral Gables. The moment you arrive, you are warmly greeted; and since this restaurant is a family business, you will enjoy meeting all the different family members.

Menu items appear in German, but don’t you worry. Your server will gladly assist you with any needed translations. You can feast on generous portions of homemade sausages, schnitzel, various potato sides and much more. My personal favorite is the Wiener schnitzel, which consists of thinly sliced veal, coated in breadcrumbs and fried. It is served with a hearty helping of mashed potatoes. Schnitzel can also be ordered in chicken or pork.

Whatever you decide for the main course, make sure to save room for dessert– the best part of the meal! You simply can’t leave without tasting the mouth-watering apple strudel drizzled with caramel and served with vanilla ice cream. The German chocolate cake is also very rich.

Every Thursday through Sunday, talented musicians play the double bass, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, guitar, and drums. Not only are they great entertainers, but they also ask kids to come up and play the cowbell with them. Between sets, band members go around to the tables and chat with the patrons. On Fridays and Saturdays the band specializes in German music. On Thursdays and Sundays, they play relaxing jazz.

One of the best things about eating at Heidi’s is getting acquainted with . . . Heidi. You can easily mistake her for just another friendly employee when she greets you at the door or stops by the table to make sure everything is to your satisfaction. She won’t tell you she’s the namesake matriarch, the keeper of the secret family recipes, or the one making sure to care about little details for your party.

Speaking of party, if you’re celebrating a birthday, Heidi will make sure you have a memorable experience. Just call ahead and mention that you are celebrating a birthday. She will make sure to decorate your table with birthday party favors. You might even find a sign with the birthday person’s name on the wall!

Whether for a special occasion or a change of culinary fare, check out Heidi’s Gasthaus. For reservations call (305) 265-4496. And remember to tell them you saw it on Miami Fun Guide!

The Miami Herald has an interactive map of Christmas light displays for you to find in your area.
We used to have friends who would drive around town and shout “Tacky!” whenever they saw a Christmas light display that fit the bill. Sounds like a fun family activity for the holidays.

Family operated Italian restaurant on Lincoln Road

Rosinella is more than you can expect for a restaurant on Lincoln Road. This family friendly Italian cuisine is a great place to take your loved ones for a tasty lunch (or dinner). They offer delicious bread to dip into oil and vinegar. My family usually orders the fantasy salad. It consists of lettuce, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella cheese and artichokes. Rosinella has a variety of other different mouth-watering salads.

Next comes the main course. Our favorite dishes are the margherita pizza and the mushroom pizza. Spaghetti, panini sandwiches, and other homestyle Italian dishes are just a few other examples of delicious foods served at Rosinella.

The last most liked part of a tasty and simple lunch is……..D E S S E R T ! ! ! ! Rosinella has the best dessert I’ve ever tasted. Tiramisu! ………….
