Last October, Morton’s Steakhouse opened in Miami Beach. While their steak is not bad, it is definitely not worth the $15 valet parking, even if their motto is “the best steak anywhere.” The famous “onion bread” wasn’t bad either, but it isn’t anything to write home about. Do I sound like I ‘m complaining? In honesty I expected more. It’s hard for this restaurant chain to compete here when the public can get just as good for less or the same at other restaurants. Our server was great– prompt, friendly and knowledgeable; Morton’s gets high marks for training their staff well. The presentation of the menu was too cool; especially the live lobster on a platter! We were also entertained by the unexpected fire from the oven in the open kitchen. The black leather seats were comfortable, but I thought it odd that they provided no butter knife (and expected us to use the steak knife to butter our bread?!).

Overall, the food was not necessarily better than the high-end competition. Smith & Wollensky, The Forge, Joe’s Stone Crab, Houston’s– these places don’t have anything to worry about. We tried some other things on Morton’s menu. The steamed asparagus were a bit stringy, and the broiled sea scallops wrapped in bacon were acceptable. The culinary highlight of the evening was the sauteed button mushrooms which were absolutely fabulous. The baked five-onion soup tasted all right, again nothing spectacular. The raspberry souffle was a letdown, baked well on top but slightly undercooked in the middle. So this restaurant gets a mixed review.

For those who like the outdoor café atmosphere without the crowds of South Beach, checkout Balans Restaurant in Brickell. A quick walk from the Miami Metromover, the Brickell area has recently expanded to include many quaint stores, art galleries and a number of yummy eateries. The cuisine at Balans is international modern, including luscious breakfast selections served until 5pm and fresh eclectic entrees for every palate. For lunch I ate a colorful African chicken salad that was full of curry flavor paired with light and fluffy taboule. My kids loved the burgers and fries, but careful: the portions are substantial. Newcomers will get a kick out of the bathrooms with glass walls that transform from clear to opaque when in use. Afterward, you can enjoy strolling around to see some beautiful sculptures, including a gigantic depiction of Samson Agonistes.

Trying to get last minute tickets to the Super Bowl is next to impossible. We do not advise that you buy tickets from anyone on the streets in Miami. Nothing against Miami; just realize that there are going to be hundreds of crooks ready to take your cash if you are fool enough to let them and you might end up with counterfeit tickets.

Here are some tips we found:

Beware of online auctions, but if you do use eBay to buy tickets, make sure that the seller has a long history of customer satisfaction and credibility.

Ask for photos of the tickets. Try to compare them to real ones.

Don’t buy tickets from anyone outside the U.S.

If you are buying a package deal with travel, verify that the game tickets are included with the travel package.

Wondering where to take your family (or friends) for a quick, yummy meal in Miami Springs? Well, if you’d like a new spin on pizza or salad, make sure to check out Original Big Tomato, voted “Best Healthy Fast Food” by Miami New Times.

Original Big Tomato is located right in the downtown circle. You may have difficulty choosing from the long menu, which includes a variety of gourmet pizzas, French “boule” salads (salad served in a bread bowl), wraps, panini sandwiches, and soups. Once you get past some of the “cheesy” names of menu items, you’ll find there’s something for every tastebud, including vegetarian, California-style , Jamaican jerk, Mexican, and of course Italian. You can even request whole wheat crust for an extra charge.

My personal favorites are the Big Tomato’s Most Popular pizza (#3 on the menu) and the Greek Salad (#27). We bought a 10-inch pizza pie and a salad, and had more than enough food for three persons. The dining area is a bit small, but those who prefer more room can always take-out and eat at the grassy circle across the street. There’s even a quaint, white gazebo for you romantics! And if you have a sweet tooth, don’t forget to try one of Hope’s delicious cookies; my mom says Hope’s Royale is the bomb!

The bathrooms and dining area are kept clean and the employees are polite. Check the website bigtomatopizza.net for discounts. Catering is available if you’re planning a party, and there’s also the “original” location in Pinecrest.

Enjoy!!!!!!

My father loves spicy food, and he decided to try the Tum Yung Goong soup with medium spice. Even though he LOVES spicy food, it was still too spicy for him!!Even if you LOVE very spicy food, I would recommend trying the mild spice before trying the hot spice that this restaurant features.

My mom and I shared an order of spring rolls (four small pieces in an order), and I ate the pad thai (rice noodles) with shrimp and chicken. My mother got the ginger chicken with vegetables. My father enjoyed the Tom Yung Goong soup and the seafood Sunomono salad (with chunks of octopus–eeek!). My sister chose the shrimp fried rice and shared some of my pad thai. My mom and my sister said the Thai iced tea was creamy and not too sweet. And do not forget the best part: DESSERT!! We had the Thai donuts, and I hope all the other desserts were as yummy as it was.

My family sat on a raised platform with pillows (a cultural feature that some Thai restaurants provide), but there are also many booths and regular tables that you may choose instead. When I walked into the door, I was amazed at how clean and spacious the dining area was. The servers were extremely polite, and the chef even came out to greet us before we left!

The bathrooms are very well-kept, and prices are moderate. So go off the beaten path and check out Suvi at 5683 Nw 36th Street in Miami Springs, just behind Miami International Airport.
