ABOUT THE SHOW

The father and daughter artistic duo of Michael and Elena Orwick will be exhibiting their artwork prior to embarking on a journey around the world as part of the “Studio Everywhere” project to teach art to children at orphanages, schools and community centers.

ART Elements has featured Michael Orwick as a top selling landscape painter since opening in 2010. After being introduced to Elena’s artwork the gallery wanted to give the young emerging artist an opportunity to be included in her father’s show. Michael and Elena look forward to sharing their newest works before they leave for their year long artistic journey.

Growing up in the Oregon Cascades and the Willamette Valley, nature and the rich landscape have had a profound impact on Michael Orwick. He has always been awed by the extraordinary ability of landscapes to tell stories, just as art does. Michael’s career in art started in animation (Will Vinton Studios) and moved quickly into illustration, where he enjoyed bringing the ideas of others to life. Today Michael is creating what he calls “Inspired Expressionism,” painting his own ideas on canvas and inviting you to provide the narrative. Michael offers hints of the mood through atmosphere and serene colors, suggesting a place and a time of day. It is what he leaves untold that grabs you though. He shares his enigmatic vision and invites you to imagine your own story. And, often you can’t help the feeling that you have ‘seen this place,’ as if through a car window or in passing to somewhere else…Michael's paintings grant you the rare chance to go back and explore a special place that fuels the imagination.

There is a reason we are drawn toward beauty, it is the language of God and nature. To me there is nothing more provocative than beauty, it inspires deep reflection and motivates me to create. I mix from a primary color palette, painting wet into wet and with layers, to both reveal and hide what lies behind; in this way I entice you into the painting. I love it when people share the feeling and stories my paintings evoked. It is my sincere wish that you will want to revisit these beautiful locations and painterly stories again and again.

About Elena

Most of my recent art has been about color, but lately, I have been experimenting with the values, harmony and contrast in my paintings. I have also been noticing how the quality of the paint itself changes the painting too.

I have been exploring how the harmony and contrast are like a kind of music that leads my brush like a dancer. In my opinion painting in general is like dancing, each new move is a color, every step is a stroke. Sometimes I like to let the music take over. It leads me to another world where it doesn't matter if the painting is perfect, or if it sells at all. All that matters is that I have fun painting, because if you are having fun the painting will be fun. Artists don't want you to just see it, they want you to feel it. So do you feel it too?

Dueling Easles – A Spectacular Finalé for the Stormy Weather Arts Festival!

For several years now, I have made a November pilgrimage to the Oregon Coast. The reason–The Stormy Weather Arts Festival. Now in its 27th year, Cannon Beach, Oregon, which is considered one of the 100 best art towns in America, has hosted this popular event.

Successful regional artists converge on this picturesque coastal community to exhibit their works and demonstrate their techniques. This is a good opportunity for artists at any level or anyone who appreciates good art to come and observe accomplished artists as they work on their latest pieces. The artists are very approachable and will gladly answer most any questions you may have.

This year the festival ran from November 7th to 9th.

There are a couple things you can always count on at the Stormy Weather Arts Festival.

First… well, at least a bit of stormy weather. Although the weather was exceptionally nice this Saturday, some heavy wind and rain came in overnight.

Another thing you can depend on, is that you won’t go away disappointed. And this year was no exception. Besides some particularly nice receptions and demonstrations over the course of the weekend, there was also a special event on Sunday which was not only educational and inspirational, but also provided a good amount of entertainment.

This first time event was called Dueling Easels. It featured two seasoned painters,Michael Orwick, and Anton Pavlenko. The DragonFire Studio and Gallery, which features the works of dozens of artists, each with their own distinctive style, was the venue for this event.

The format for this “duel” began with each artist starting an oil painting. The two artists were nearly side-by-side but turned enough so neither could see the others’ painting as it progressed. After 30 minutes of frantic painting, the two artists switched places, andworked on the painting started by the other artist. They switched again, going back to the painting they had started, and then once more as they finished the painting the other had started.

Anton and Michael are friends who often do plein air paintings along side each other.

At the outset Michael suggested that the event could turn out to be a slow moving disaster.

Right from the start, it was apparent that Michael and Anton had very different ways of starting a painting.

The painting session was complete with it’s share of playful banter, trash talk and posturing, but it was all in good fun and drew laughter from the crowd. And the collaborative effort made for a thrilling event for the large crowd that gathered to watch.

At one point Michael called the event “intimidating,” and yet he looked at ease, and in his element.

Besides the difficulties of continuing to work on a painting that was started by someone else, there was also the issue of using an unfamiliar palate. Michael said, “I’m actually dipping into colors that I don’t even know what they do or what they are.”

Just before the first switch, Anton put squiggles in a few large areas that had been left unpainted. When Michael moved over to the painting, Anton announced that they were paint by number numerals left to give Michael a little needed help.

Shortly before the last switch, Michael called on his secret weapon, his daughter Elena Grace, who added a few strokes of her own. Although Elena Grace is only nine years old, she is a budding artist in her own right.

Those in the crowd were curious to see if two talented artists who have different styles and different approaches to painting, could join together to create works that were not complete disasters. The consensus, at least in this case was that, despite the challenges thrown in front of them, Michael and Anton were able to team up in a way where both of their individual styles were able manifest themselves, and the pieces were stronger for it.

During the event, live music was performed by Bucky Pottschmidt, and tasty hors d’oeuvres were provided by Jonathan Hoffman.

Following the event, the two pieces went up for auction. The vertical painting was sold for $1,000, but the horizontal painting didn’t meet the $800 minimum bid. I think that it has sold since then but I have not been able to confirm this yet.

The Art of The Allison is a private collection representing over one hundred local and regional artists working in diverse media including fiber, glass, sculpture, wood, photography and paintings. The collection focuses on the natural beauty of Oregon and celebrates the bounty of our great state.

It is a growing collection that includes six commissioned works by local painters and fused glass artists. The majority of the art was purchased from local artists responding to an invitation to submit work.

The decision to use original Oregon Art to adorn The Allison was an easy one. Joan and her family have a long tradition of supporting the arts in their home state. Whether they are giving access to cultural opportunities through partnerships and programming, creating Art Festivals or developing Regional Art Centers or the community, art is a passion and a privilege that is near and dear to the family heart. It is this love of art and commitment to their community that drove the Art of The Allison Collection.

Art Elements Gallery's owner Loni Parrish, along with her family, curated the private collection at The Allison Inn & Spa in 2009, featuring over 100 Oregon artists and 500 works of original art. Loni's family have a long tradition of supporting the arts in their home state. It is this love of art and commitment to their community that drove the Art of The Allison Collection. Each of the 85 suites has at least three pieces of original art. 37 paintings, sculptures and glass are available for the public to enjoy, in addition to a substantial collection in the Spa. Even Staff and Administration offices are filled with original art.

What makes The Art of The Allison a distinctive collection are the people who created the artwork. They are an integral part of the "dream that Joan built."

As a surprise, Loni presented her mother with the Art of the Allison Collection book that she and a team of artists published. Now in it's second edition, this vast project includes artists portraits in their own home or studio, artist statements, a walking tour of the public art and a index of the artists in each of the room.

How was I inspired?

My dad always loved to paint and day after day I would just sit and watch as he built his creations step by step until it was done. But the thing that he always asked me when he was done with his painting was...”What is it?” I always thought it was odd the it obviously was a river, lake, mountains, forest or a sunset.

I would just say what I saw, one by one, but then one day I thought why does he keep asking me when he knows I know the answer? I thought to myself, everyone sees differently, some might see a blur, stripes, colors or abstract shapes, but I see beauty.

I was born nine years ago on August 19th, which is World Humanitarian Day. Coincidence? I hope not. Maybe that is why I have chosen to use my art to help support charities that I like.

I want to thank the people and galleries that make raising money for my favorite causes possible.

Amy Isler Gibson, from the beautiful Gallery at the Watershed in Eugene, Oregon created my first art show with so much support and love. Together we raised money for CHAP.

Next, Eeva, and her group at the famous Dragonfire Gallery in Cannon Beach, Oregon set up an art show for my girlfriends and me. It was amazing. Eeva had even invited real owls from the Wildlife Center. We had a nearly sold out show, and together we raised money for The Wildlife Center of the North Coast.

Right now, I am showing my work with the Portland Audubon Society, and I hope to raise money for all my owl friends there.

And like most things parodying Bob, it is done with a touch of humor and love.Growing up far from anything artsy, Mr. Ross was some of my first and most profound exposure to art, and painting. He made days stuck at home sick almost enjoyable. I think most any artist that can make creating and self expression approachable is to be commended.

Most artists I know both smile and cringe at the mention of Bob Ross and I think even he would understand the way he has gone down in pop culture history.

A few years before his death, Ross filmed several "self-parodying MTV spots".

Bob Ross' patient teaching and "wet on wet" painting techniques helped introduce thousands of amateur painters to the art world. The "serious" art establishment might not have had much time for Ross—and the contempt was mutual—but even now, almost two decades after his death, Ross' iconic show The Joy of Painting still enjoys a large following in syndication. Let's take a look at five things you might not know about the man who brought us so many happy little trees.1. HE WAS A MILITARY MAN
Ross' quiet voice and gentle demeanor made him the perfect host for The Joy of Painting, but those traits might have kept him from being the perfect soldier. Before Ross became a TV painter, he spent 20 years in the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of master sergeant. In fact, an early assignment to Alaska helped expose the Florida native to the snowy mountains and evergreens that would become staples of his art.
Viewers might find it surprising that the serene Ross was an Air Force sergeant, and it sounds like the painter thought it was a little odd himself. He later told the Orlando Sentinel, "I was the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work. The job requires you to be a mean, tough person. And I was fed up with it."
When Ross retired from the Air Force, he allegedly vowed never to scream again, a plan that seems to have worked perfectly.

2. HE WORKED FOR FREEThe Joy of Painting ran new seasons on PBS from 1983 to 1994, so even at public broadcasting rates the show must have made Ross quite a bit of loot, right? Not quite. Ross actually did the series for free; his income came from Bob Ross Inc. Ross' company sold art supplies and how-to videotapes, taught classes, and even had a troupe of traveling art instructors who roamed the world teaching painting. It's tough to think of a better advertisement for these products than Ross' show.
How did Ross find the time to tape all of those shows for free? He could record a season almost as fast as he could paint. Ross could bang out an entire 13-episode season of The Joy of Painting in just over two days, which freed him up to get back to teaching lessons.

3. HE DIDN'T SELL HIS PAINTINGS

In a 1991 interview with the New York Times, Ross claimed he'd made over 30,000 paintings since he was an 18-year-old stationed in Alaska with the Air Force. When Ross died of lymphoma in 1995, most of his paintings either ended up in the hands of charity or PBS.
That's not to say there aren't any Ross paintings floating around, though. While he generally didn't sell his canvasses, Ross did sell some souvenir gold pans during his stint in Alaska. At the time, the amateur artist got $25 a pop for a gold pan with an Alaskan scene painted in the bottom. [See Also: What Happened to Bob Ross' Paintings?]

4. HE HAD A DR. DOOLITTLE STREAK
Before he ever picked up a paintbrush, Ross was an animal lover. During his childhood in Florida, he once shocked his mother by trying to nurse a wounded alligator back to health in the family's bathtub. Throughout his adult life, he maintained his soft spot for animals; his Florida home usually housed any number of critters that Ross was trying to help rehabilitate. At various times he played host to birds with broken wings, orphaned baby squirrels, and an epileptic squirrel that lived in his empty Jacuzzi.
Ross liked animals so much that he would tape squirrels in his backyard. During the early 1990s, Ross had hoped to develop a new non-painting show that would introduce children to a variety of new wildlife.

5. HE DIDN'T LOVE THE FRO

It's hard to think of Bob Ross and not immediately key in on the giant bushy mushroom cloud of hair that exploded off of his head, and Ross knew it. Unfortunately, he also supposedly hated the haircut. Ross had an uncanny knack for marketing, though, so he knew that trimming his locks down to a more conservative "˜do would probably undercut part of his business. Ross decided to stick with his trademark look and even had his permed visage emblazoned on every tube of Bob Ross Inc. art supplies.

Bob Ross was raised in Orlando, Florida.^[2] Ross had a half brother Jim, whom he mentioned in passing on his show.^[3]While working as a carpenter with his father, Ross lost his left index finger. It did not affect the way he held his palette while painting.

Ross enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 17. The Air Force transferred him to Elmendorf Air Force Base^{[citation needed]} (in Alaska), where he first saw the snow and mountains that later became recurring themes in his artwork. He developed his quick-painting technique to create art for sale in brief daily work breaks.^[4] Having held military positions that required him to be, in his own words, "mean" and "tough," "the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work," Ross decided that if he ever moved on from the military, "it wasn't going to be that way any more," vowing "never to scream again."^[4] This was where Bob would meet Jane, when they were in the medical field and would become Bob's second wife.

During Ross' stay in Alaska, he worked as a bartender part-time, when he discovered a TV show that was called The Magic World of Oil Painting, hosted by a German painter, named Bill Alexander.
After studying with Bill Alexander, Ross discovered that he was soon able to earn more from selling his work than from his Air Force position. Ross then retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant ^[5] and became famous worldwide hosting the television program, The Joy of Painting,^[1] with the help of Annette & Walter Kowalski.
Before the show was launched, Bob would try to promote the painting technique but with little interest. He also had to find a way to cut back on spending, so he decided to have his hair permed, just so he could save money on haircuts. The perm hairstyle was not comfortable for Bob, but ultimately became an iconic feature of the painter

People do not go to Facebook to buy things. They use it to socialize with others. When you suddenly start throwing a sales pitch at people for your art, you become that guy at the party trying to sell you insurance. It is the wrong place at the wrong time. You also lose an element of trust. You are no longer the artist trying to share your gift to the world. You turn into a website trying to sell things to people.

So what is the point of the Facebook? Facebook is the social equivalent of a handshake. It is the opportunity to meet someone and decide if they are worth a conversation. This is your shot to connect with another person and see if you have anything in common. You put aside the sales pitch and tell people about your art and see if it resonates with their life. You also listen to their feedback - it is a conversation.
