Happy New Year, everyone!!

Hopefully you had good food, drink and, most importantly, company!

MICHIDO has had a really eventful year! Just to list a few of the highlights:

We were able to have a smashing time at AM2 and meeting with some awesome bands like heidi., Sadie, SCANDAL and KanonxKanon.

We were able to experience 雅's talent in person while writing our first concert report in hopes of sharing the experience with you all.

We had another team member, Kyuuppa, join the team and released our first ever drama subs.

And, most importantly, we were able to enjoy all of your continued support even when we were absent.

Thank you so much for supporting us, and please continue to look forward to more MICHIDO content in 2012!

Aoi: Yes! I've been waiting for this! I've been waiting for this y'know! Ye~s! Bring it on!

The Gazette: Hahahahahahaha

Takuya: Because you're done with your part of the investigation, right?

Aoi: Yes! Yes!

Uruha: (quietly) Yup

Takuya: (laughs) You're really excited, aren't you!

Aoi: Yes!

Uruha: (quietly) Yup

Takuya: According to everyone here, Ruki's good feature is...he has good taste!

Aoi & Reita: Aaah--

Uruha: Yup yup

Aoi: Umm, well that's nice

Takuya: But Aoi, you wrote that down, “Ruki has good taste”

Aoi: Ah but...well, okay yeah he does. According to us, right! But really, he has the best tastes among the five of us...definitely~

Takuya: He has some pretty good design skills right?

Aoi: Well~

Kai: Pretty exceptional

Aoi: Huh?

Kai: He's pretty exceptional (laughs)

Kai: I'm going to be next (laughs)

Takuya: Mister leader, stop baby-sitting everyone (laughs) Next, Reita says he has good taste in food. He must have some pretty good tastes, eh.

Reita: Yes, like, when we're together and I'm thinking about ordering take out but not sure what I should get. I'll ask Ruki “Hey, what are you getting?” and we end up getting the same thing, something I always end up getting...Ahhh! He has good taste!

The Gazette: Ahahahahaha

Reita: No, seriously, there wasn't any mistake!

Takuya: So even without seeing what you might be interested in, there's nothing wrong with what he chooses?

Reita: Absolutely nothing wrong. Seriously, the eye he has for these things is incredible (laugh)

Uruha: That's awesome (laughs) Usually when I see Ruki eating it makes me want to eat it too.

The Gazette: Yeah!

Takuya: Ahh~I see! What he's eating seems to look good, is that what you mean?

Uruha: Yeah! There's that too.

Reita: Yeah, there is.

Aoi: It really does look like it tastes good.

Takuya: And what Kai wants Ruki to change is Ruki's slow eating.

Kai: Ahh! He talks too much. When he starts talking, he can't stop! And also when he's eating he doesn't move his chopsticks. He eats the slowest!

Takuya: I see! Moving on, what Uruha wants Ruki to change. It's...only one word. “Noisy” is what you have written down.

The Gazette: Ahahahahaha

Reita: Eh?? (laughs)

Uruha: He is noisy!! (laughs)

Takuya: Is he really that noisy?

Uruha: He is! And there's even a time for it!

Takuya: Ah!! But, what Aoi wrote down is a little different. “For the sake of his throat I want him to stop talking for a bit after the lives.”

The Gazette: Ahahahahaha

Aoi: Yes yes yes~ I'm considerate aren't I☆

Takuya: and for Uruha he's “noisy” (laughs) Uruha, you're worried about Ruki's throat too!

Uruha: Well, I am a bit concerned. Ahhh, yeah that's what it is, I'm concerned!

Aoi: Well, he is noisy. (laughs)

Uruha: Yeah, and he's loud.

Aoi: So today, when we were on our way here I was sitting next to him! Man, he was noisy!

The Gazette: Ahahahahaha!

Aoi: And I was like, “Are my ear drums going to be worn down?” (laughs)

Takuya: After lives, what kind of things does Ruki talk about?

Aoi: That's... actually I don't even get what he's talking about.

Takuya: Huh?

Aoi: He just talks to himself whenever he wants.

Takuya: Alone?

Aoi: It's like he has no friends (laughs)

Takuya: What, hey guys! That's when you should listen to him! (dry laugh)

Kai: When he was talking to Reita, the subject didn't focus on Reita but shifted to me in a flash! (laughs)

Uruha: Yeah! (laughs)

the Gazette: Ahahahahaha

Uruha: (laughs) Yeah, it's really scary!! We can't even make eye contact with Ruki.

Kai: Seriously! I was shocked! (laughs)

Reita: He's cute, though (laughs)

Takuya: Uruha, you said you don't listen even when he's talking, but...you should still listen...

Uruha: I said that, huh, but Ruki being Ruki, well, anyone would be like that...

Kai: He keeps looking for someone to listen to him

Aoi: That's the problem, you know... (laughs)

the Gazette: Ahahahahaha

Reita: Hey!!! (laughs)

Takuya: All right, and in regards to Ruki's good and bad points, they're actually the same!

Reita: Eh?!

Takuya: He wrote things like being selfish, short tempered. I wonder about this too. Does he know how everyone feels?

Kai: Him short tempered? I don't think so.

The Gazette: Ye~ah

Reita: Yeah, but...like (Uruha accidentally covered the mike)

Uruha: Ah, sorry go ahead

the Gazette: Ahahahahaha

Uruha: (laughs) I want to know too.

Takuya: Yes Reita, please go ahead (laughs)

Reita: Even though he wrote down that it's something he wants to fix, he also wrote it down in the “good traits” section. There's no sense of him wanting to fix anything at all (laugh)

the Gazette: Ahahahahaha

Reita: That guy...(laughs)

Uruha: No feeling of that at all (laughs)

Takuya: I see... But being selfish can also be a good thing...

Reita: Well, there's a good time and a bad time.

Takuya: And what he wants to change is, sleeping in late and his good point is also sleeping in late.

Reita: See, he has no intention of changing himself!

The Gazette: AHAHAHAHAHA

Takuya: Wouldn't it be better if he changed that?

Uruha: He definitely won't change that!

Aoi: It's useless!

Takuya: When is he like this?

Uruha: Well...

Aoi: It's ALWAYS!

Uruha: Yeah, ALWAYS!

Reita: Well, Aoi is a little...

Aoi: OI OI OI OI OIIIIIIIIIII (he covers what Reita has to say)

Reita: Ah! But today, right~TODAY!

(Seems like Aoi was late today)

Takuya: During meetings, who arrives the latest?

Aoi: Everyone gets picked up from their home, right? He doesn't come out of his place at all!!! Even though we're waiting in the car.

Uruha: Ah! Yeah!

Aoi: Hey, you're like that too!

Uruha: Ah! I am but I've been to Ruki's place and he didn't even come out at all!!

Takuya:What was he doing?

Uruha: Even though I called him he said, “Yeah, okay okay.” I get the mail, and even went to get coffee and he still isn't here! Then, after about 20 minutes he comes and says “Yo!” (dry laugh)

Takuya: After 20 minutes? That's...he's definitely busy with something right?

Uruha: Well, I was just, “Um, yeah, okay let's go.”

Takuya: You're so nice! Uruha, I have a better impression of you now.

Uruha: Ahaha (laughs)

Aoi: No wait, the three of us~me, Reita and Kai have done that at Uruha's house too!

Uruha: Ahahaha

Reita: Yeah!

Kai: We did, we did! It's pretty much the same thing!

Takuya: So everyone does it! I see! Ah, I wonder how Ruki is doing. Is he still there? Ah he just did a peace sign (laughs)

Reita: He's enjoying himself, eh.

The Gazette: WAHAHAHAHA (roars with laughter)

Takuya: Ruki, welcome back.

Ruki: Ye~s. I'm back~(in a girly voice)

Reita: What the...

Takuya: Huh? He changed his character? (laughs) Well, the investigation will continue! Final person! Mr. Leader, Kai!!

Reita: Ah~oh ho ho ho!

Takuya: Are you all right?

Kai: Please be nice to me!

The Gazette: Ahahahaha!

Kai: Please be nice (laughs)

Takuya: Why has your voice gotten so timid, Kai? (laughs) All right, please, step outside the studio~

Long time no see! Apologies for the long wait--Episode 2 of Kaito Royale is finally here! A very special thank-you to timer Miyavi for helping us out~

The only firm rule we have is that you do not stream our subs. Please honor our only request. Uploading them to streaming sites make other people money with the ads on their page while the people who put in the time to sub dramas, us included, make no profit, ever.

Mobage
A social networking app that you can play games in. Previously only in Japan, you can now get Mobage games as they expand to the US!

Helene Kingdom
Doesn’t exist. Could be in reference to Greece, but the way that it is referred to in the drama does not directly indicate this. Though, Nemesis is, after all, a Grecian goddess (of revenge, btw).

MI6
The near equivalent to the CIA for the United States, it’s a British intelligence service. Its internal counterpart is the MI5, which can be compared to the FBI, responsible for internal affairs. From what I know, MI6 has no connection to creating actual security systems like it is in the drama.

Fermat’s Last Theorem and Wiles
A math theorem stating that if there no three positive integers a, b, and c, can satisfy the equation aⁿ + bⁿ = cⁿ where n is greater than 2. The Wiki article gets really confusing as it was probably written by a math guy for math people, but in case you’re a math person and are interested, you can learn more about it here.

The problem that they mention in the drama though, is that they were having trouble proving it true by proving its opposite false.

Live Report: L'Arc~en~Ciel 20th Anniversary Live

20 years later, and L’arc~en~Ciel only got more amazing.

On November 30th, it was a chance to return to my source of love for Jrock with a screening of L’arc~en~Ciel’s 20th Anniversary Live in San Francisco.

The actual live was held for two days in Tokyo's Ajinomoto Stadium on May 28 and 29th, 2011.

I’m going to admit that after sitting through the Hatsune Miku screening, I was much more excited for L’arc since I would actually know the musicians and the songs that they were performing. The screening also held a more special place in my heart simply because they were when I discovered that Jrock was incredible.

To prep for the screening, I went through YouTube to listen to some of my favorites songs and found clips from the 20th Anniversary live. These low quality previews gave me some idea (perhaps too many ideas) about what to expect during the screening, and it was enough to get me excited to see everything on the big screen and in high definition.

There were some ups and downs though.

To keep the downs short (there really weren’t that many), watching the live screening was essentially the same as watching a live DVD on your own computer. I was perhaps expecting something more interactive because of Hatsune Miku.

The Vocaloid screening had many enthusiastic cosplayers and the audience in the theater was more interactive with the concert. The L’Arc audience was much less vocal and kept a more respectful silence, only occasionally clapping along to certain songs and cheering whenever one of the band members flirted with the cameras filming them.

I was also looking forward to certain clips I had seen on YouTube, particularly one where different singers sang the opening to Honey on the screens (even SID’s Mao, who was mistaken by someone as a member of Alice 9, and ABC’s Yasu made a cameo!), but with the time restriction, Honey wasn’t one of the songs that made it into the screening.

But the ups definitely outnumbered the downs.

Since the footage was edited, that meant that the audience got more chances to see the band close up. Hyde also gave the cameras treats by occasionally interacting with the cameras close by. At one point, when the audience in the Ajinomoto Stadium was singing back to the band, Hyde held the microphone up to the camera, gesturing for whoever was watching to sing along.

Hyde also rewarded everyone when he lay down on the stage on his side while still singing and gave the camera a smoldering look that was meant to seduce the viewers’ socks off. Besides the seductive look though, the fact that he managed to keep his singing volume and depth consistent was, in and of itself, very impressive.

The next member who got the most screen time was Tetsu with his signature flashy pink bass. He was spectacular, as usual, for his wide range of backup vocals, and as far as bassists go, he was very interactive with the audience. As someone who didn’t quite pay attention to the back up vocals in recordings, this screening definitely increased my appreciation for Tetsu.

It was also touching to see the bassist occasionally survey the packed stadium with an expression that seemed as if he was about to cry from seeing all the fans that had come to support them.

Ken and Yukihiro received the least screen time. Part of this was due to Ken simply moving around nonstop. With what screen time he did get, he was running to the side wings to lavish the fans with attention.

Yukihiro was clearly heard, but most of his shots were profile views in between his cymbals and flash of drumsticks. He did have a particularly impressive drum solo which ended with a dramatic bang--he finished by literally punching one of his cymbals.

The stadium audience also were featured prominently in the concert. One of the best parts of the screening was when the cuts panned to show the entire audience as they waved their glowsticks in unison to a song. Since the sky was darker than usual with the rain and the stage lights were minimalized, the entire stadium looked as if it was an entire city from the air with its soft neon glows.

Throughout the two hours of screening, which covered both days of the concert, only one MC was included in the last half hour. Hyde essentially thanked all the staff and fans that had continued to support L’arc throughout the band’s history. It was a pleasant change to see Tetsu and Ken stand respectfully in their areas of the stage while surveying the thousands of fans that had braved the unpredictable rain to see them.

All in all, the screening had some obvious missing elements since it wasn’t a real concert, the but the band did not disappoint at all. L’Arc performed to their fullest, and it was incredible hearing songs from nearly a decade ago come to life again on the Ajinomoto Stadium stage.

The screening was an excellent teaser for when the band will perform in New York on March 23, 2012 at Madison Square Garden Theater. Unfortunately, it’s also a sad reminder that there is no scheduled show (yet!) for the San Francisco area.

For those of you who have gone or will go to the screenings, let us know what you think! Did you wish for more close ups of Hyde? Were the harmonica lickings not enough for you? I personally would have loved to see more of Tetsu tossing fresh bananas out to the audience, but alas, the banana basket could only hold so many bananas.

Remember what I said about some dramatic news?!

Well, it's here!

MICHIDO officially has a new ~~coolie~~ team member! She'll be referred to as Qappa and will be helping us with projects here and there. Her first project is the first episode of the new drama, Kaito Royale.

At any rate, you can find the subtitles to episode 1 of Kaito Royale here. We won't be providing the video file, but we're sure you'll be able to find it somewhere~ VLC Media Player will be able to handle this file automatically as long as it and the video file are in the same place on your computer and have the same name. :) Before you run off and enjoy yourself, keep in mind two things:

1. DON'T upload these onto streaming sites (ex. YouTube, DramaCrazy, MySoju, etc.) or profit off of them.
2. Read the notes below! They're important~

This is your chance to get smarter while you watch dramas! 8D Here're some more details about things mentioned in the drama:

“The Tear of Alexander” Cocktail (00:34)
While rather amusing to see in the drama, this “cocktail” is most likely a diluted red cabbage juice pH indicator. It can be made at home, and is really quite interesting if various liquids are tested. In the case of the cocktail turning green, it is because a liquid base (pH 8-14) was added. Though in the drama it looks to be a lemon or other garnish of some sort, it was most likely window cleaner, or another household base. If an acid is added to the pH indicator, it’ll turn bright pink! Don’t try this at home, however, if you intend to drink your concoction.

“Cursed” gem (1:22)
Though The Tear of Alexander doesn’t exist, and therefore doesn’t go around offing people, there’s the Hope Diamond, which is often claimed to be cursed, as all of its wearers or owners are brought tragedy and misfortune.

Caligula Effect (04:17)
What Rei refers to as the Caligula Effect is actually just reverse psychology. Reverse psychology is exactly what Rei states, but there is much more to it than is revealed. (It’s super interesting, so read more about it here). The real definition of the Caligula Effect is the phenomena where, in the simplest of terms, powerful men compulsively cheat (on their woman/women). Caligula (otherwise also known as Gaius) was a politically powerful Roman emperor who constantly sought to increase imperial power, and is infamously referred to by the few surviving sources as having an insatiable sexual appetite. There’s absolutely no connection between the Caligula Effect and what it’s said to mean in the drama. Don’t be fooled!

Hausmann (11:11)
Full name Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann, a German mineralogist. The nice chap who wrote the screenplay for this episode clearly just needed the name of a real (and old, preferably dead) mineralogist. Hausmann didn’t actually say the line he is quoted to say in the drama.

Wooowwwww, how long has it been since we had a magazine translation?? I'm not even going to put a date because it'd be embarrassing to admit.

With the American Thanksgiving in my lap, I want to show grateful I am for a break from my 3 jobs by putting up a project! Thanks for being so patient and still following us! I promise that we've got more projects coming up, and we've got some dramatic news on the way too! ;)

At any rate, this piece is from volume 8 of H'evn Another Side. Kouki reveals his first love and talks about how he was a sports freak when he was a kid. If that isn't enough for you, then you definitely have to read about why he couldn't date until high school--even though I'm pretty sure he had girls falling all over his feet.

PERSONAL INTERVIEW: KOUKI

--What kind of kid were you back then?

Kouki: My dad was a track and field coach and he was always training me. I remember when I was in kindergarten I always won first place in the foot races. There's a beach called Suma beach. I always trained there and always got first place. It was sort of like if I didn't get first place then I had failed something. (laughs)

--Did you go to supplementary after-school lessons?

Kouki: In elementary school I was in the little league baseball team. I took abacus lessons starting from the 3rd year of elementary school to about 6th year up to level 2. Baseball was also from 3rd year to about 6th year.

--Did you also join the baseball club?

Kouki: Baseball was more or less like softball, but I wasn't a good player. I got 3s in almost everything on my report card except Physical Education, which I got a 5 in.
5 being highest, 0 being lowest

--Did you have a favourite school subject?

Kouki: Art and social studies. I was really bad at math though.

--I hated math too. It's like, "Isn't it enough if we can do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division?" (laughs)

Kouki: And you keep thinking about it, right? I was really bad at home economics too. There's always a girl that's really good at that class. I either got the group leader or someone really good at it to do it for me.

--What kind of personality did you have at the time?

Kouki: I guess you can say I wasn't a very bright kid. There were kids who are really good at sports that always get the top places, and kids who are good at studying always study a lot for some reason...By the time I entered junior high things suddenly changed. I was quite a mischievous kid. To put it in a more modern way I was “Oraora type.” (laughs)

--Who was your first love?

Kouki: It was Ms. Kimura, a new kindergarten teacher at the time. I still remember it, even now. But when I think back, she was really young--in her early 20s. I guess that means I was mature for my age (laughs)

--Where did you go for school trips?

Kouki: I went to Ise. For fifth years, there was something like a week-long camp at an eco-institute that was a lot of fun. We had a camp fire and even played dare. For some reason someone dared me to play a ghost (laughs). Then I thought I could probably run off to do something else if I was a ghost because I'd be a ghost wandering around (laughs). I'm the type that likes to scare people, and usually I'm in the right place at the right time to do that.

On the other hand, the school trip was 2 nights and 3 days and as a group we visited famous places. I got stuff like a toothpick holder in the shape of a fish bone and brought back souvenirs that had nothing to do with Ise. I gave my grandma a picture of rocks from Ise and the fact that she still has it for decoration makes me happy. After that, I started listening to music around 6th grade. Before that I had absolutely no interest in music. Every time my mom watched those music programs, I'd think, “Hurry up and change the channel.” But around 6th grade I started liking Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi, CHAGE & ASKA, and B'Z and after that I was completely into music.

--What instrument did you play in elementary school music festivals?

I played the pianica. And the recorder had the most people because it was a group of people who couldn't play anything, but I played the pianica (laughs). I still have it at home with my name written on it. I still use it when I want to play music.

--Do you remember what you wrote for graduation?

I wrote about my parents. “My Dream” was the title but, because my parents were always playing sports and also taught baseball, my dream was to become a baseball player. Up till then I was having fun learning baseball so for the time being I wrote that because I wanted to be like my parents. After that, I also wrote “and pro baseball players can earn millions of dollars.” (laughs)

--Did you still play baseball in junior high?

I did. I was completely sure that I'd become a baseball player. When I was a 1st year, there was a really scary 3rd year. He was seriously like those gangsters in mangas. Elementary kids know nothing about a hierarchy, right? It's after you get into junior high that you come face to face with it. But I questioned it and there was a period of time when I resisted it. It was like, the guys better at it were at the top, right? They weren't selfish and they got along with their team mates. At that time I even bullied the seniors. I was a bully (laughs). I really liked going against people stronger than me. Kids in their third year are really scary, huh.

--By the way what was your uniform?

I wore a Gakuran. Blazers aren't common in Kansai, you know. Most of the schools wear gakuran.

--You still didn't start music in Junior High?

Not at all. I didn't even think about music. Baseball was really tough and I was immersed in it. Which is why even dating was after the third year of junior high after the baseball club finished. Before that it was all about baseball.

--Where did you go for that school trip?

We went skiing in Nagano. I've skated before, but skiing was a first. And there wasn't a lot of time, so when I finally improved, it was the end of the trip. But it was fun though.

--Do you have any memories from your graduation ceremony?

In elementary, junior high and high school I cried. I cried really hard, especially in junior high, because everyone in the baseball club made a promise to stay together, but we all ended up separating.

--Was music after entering high school?

It was still baseball in high school. In junior high we were only allowed to have a sports cut on the team, so in high school nothing but buzz cuts were allowed so I had to cut it too.

--3 years of intense baseball?

It was 2 years, and honestly I was really bad at it. In the first year I was allowed to play but I wasn't motivated at all and my team mates weren't either...During junior high I was too into baseball but I felt really unsatisfied. Despite the strict relationship between the seniors and juniors in the club, I couldn't really get used to it. The 1st and 2nd years used a storage place as a clubroom, but a proper clubroom was only for the 3rd years. We ended up throwing away the captain's uniform and gloves and quitting. (laughs) A friend and I quit but in the end the captain couldn't put up with the situation either. In my 2nd year I didn't join any clubs. It was after 3rd year of high school when bands were popular and then it started when I was said, “Hey, let's start a band!”

--Did you start off with vocals?

It was the guitar. After school I went and bought an acoustic guitar and played Fuji Fumiya's “True Love.” I didn't feel like I was improving so I kept practicing. When I was in a band there were 3 people on guitar, and we didn't have anyone on vocals. And just as I was getting better at the guitar, we decided that "the person who isn't as good on guitar will be on vocals for now". It was obvious that I wasn't very good, and that's how I became the vocals.

--What made you decide to continue with vocals?

Same as baseball--when I start one thing, I don't do anything else. I'm the type that gets completely absorbed in what I'm doing and I got into vocals pretty quickly. Despite the fact that we were a cover band in high school, I thought I could make a living out of it (laughs). That's how I started with vocals.

--And that's brought you to where you are now, right?

Yes.

--Lastly, a message to the fans please.

It's the first time I've talked so much about myself. Even though it was all about baseball and not really about music, I wonder if it was because of those circumstances that I got to where I am right now. It's really a privilege for us to have a relaxed performance at Liquid Room. I always thought doing lives as usual was for the best, but for D=OUT lives are really competitive. This live for D=Out is going to be a gamble, so at the Liquid Room, even if I'm the only up there, I want everyone who has even a slight urge to see to come and watch us.

Wow, can anyone imagine Kouki with a pianica? Every time I see one of those, I think of Nodame Cantabile. Someone should totally convince Kouki to do a concert with his pianica.

Anyways, tell us what you think of Kouki with a buzz cut! Also, what do you think of Kouki's taste in music? I didn't really listen to B'z before working on this post, but now I think I'm becoming more and more of a fan of them!

Live Report: Hatsune Miku's Live Party 2011

Who can change stage outfits in a whirl of clothes and can disappear in and out of thin air?

Hatsune Miku can!

Hatsune Miku’s Live Party 2011 39’s Sapporo Live was screened on November 10th in nine major cities following the August concert celebrating Miku’s first birthday. San Francisco was one of them, and Mou Ichido was there with a friend from eventseekr.

So how exactly do you enjoy a virtual concert with a virtual pop star? I was wondering this for a few days when I was confirmed for the show and still wondering when the film actually began rolling.

The answer? Enjoy it like it’s a very good piece of anime that had been overlaid in a concert hall full of men waving green glow sticks, which it basically was.

It was a Hatsune Miku concert, but all the major vocaloids, the Kagamine twins and Megurine Luka, made appearances--mostly out of thin air. The virtual stars were projected onto a screen with real musicians playing on both sides.

And of course, I was watching the entire concert DVD projected onto a screen, making it a virtual concert with its virtual pop star.

Despite the number of times I’ve already typed the word “virtual” though, I will admit that there were times when this Vocaloids felt very real. The attention to detail on the Vocaloids, from their movement down to the swish of Miku’s infamous turquoise hair, sometimes made me forget that I was still watching an animation and not just a very good cosplayer dancing on stage as the music rolled. Megurine Luka particularly impressed me when she began to “sing” and demonstrated a voice that was extremely life-like and human.

In fact, my realization smacked me head on when I was confronted with Miku’s (>∀<) face. Yes, >∀< was exactly what showed up on her face. All of the Vocaloid’s inhumanely fast costume changes (Miku literally “gave us a twirl” and had a new costume on half a twirl later) were also something that real performing celebrities could only dream of.

Another giant flashing sign that the concert didn’t have a flesh and blood singer was the projector that was behind the screen. It sometimes proved distracting when the camera caught a Vocaloid at an angle where you looked directly into a flashing light instead of Hatsune Miku’s uniform.

Many of the audience members might as well have sat in the concert itself. There were plenty of cosplayers, and many attendees arrived and armed with green glowsticks, some in the shape of Hatsune Miku’s iconic welsh onion.

Audience members cheered when their favorite Vocaloid appeared, and Ooohed and Awwwed when a Vocaloid did something particularly impressive. During ballads, there was a steady wave of green glowsticks, and during more upbeat songs, rhythmic clapping in the theater auditorium matched those of the recorded audience.

The best part of the show wasn’t Hatsune Miku though. It was in fact her live band. They brought out the best of the concert. The band brought a very human and interactive talent that couldn’t be replicated by programming and synthesizers.

With Hatsune Miku’s programming, it was given that she couldn’t interact with her audience like a human performer. So with what the Vocaloids couldn’t do, the band did by showing off their many skills when solos came up. The two guitarists would shred through their solos while the bassist and drummer had no trouble keeping with the beat and energy.

The keyboard pianist was a ringleader in many ways. When he wasn’t playing wildly at his keyboards, he was cheering on the audience and encouraging them to wave their own glowsticks by pulling out his own. The other musicians followed suit and five pairs of glowsticks also lit up the stage.

All in all, the Hatsune Miku concert was definitely an interesting concept, but not one that felt quite as exciting as a live concert. It was reminiscent of when I browsed YouTube videos online, only much higher quality on a much larger screen. While interesting and definitely unique, the length of the show felt longer than necessary, especially with the lack of interaction between the Vocaloids and the audience. Plus, it didn’t help that Miku waved goodbye for the last half hour before actually getting shut off.

The concert didn’t leave me with nothing through. I definitely developed a greater appreciation for the Vocaloids, especially Megurine Luka, and I have a newfound respect for the crew that put the concept together. The concert was truly a gathering place of talent--both on the programming end and the artistic end. There was also a part of me that enjoyed this rather philosophical mix of where "reality" started and stopped. It felt as if there were deeper cultural implications that were clearly playing out on the screen in front of me.

And, of course, before I go off on an analytical distraction and forget...Happy belated birthday, Miku!

Live Event: 雅 - What's My Name? - Irving Plaza, NYC 2011

With Miyavi making his way all over America, we've teamed up with the fantastic Melissa Castor, who covered AM2 Convention's big stars, to tell and show us Miyavi's rocking out of the East Coast.

Melissa sheds some light on Miyavi's costumed antics and also provides a live clip of some of that night's happenings. Enjoy!

Miyavi’s return to New York City couldn’t have come on a better day – October 31st, Halloween.

As is typical with New York Jrock crowds, the line outside of Irving Plaza on 14th Street and Irving Place in lower Manhattan began before the crack of dawn.

This is nothing new. When Miyavi played at Irving Plaza the previous June, the line was already down the entire block the night before. This year, it snowed the weekend before - very unusual weather for NYC.

But that didn’t stop some fans from showing up around 6am – and a very brave few who camped overnight. That was dedication.

There was never a dull moment even before doors opened. Quite a few people had arrived in costume for this Halloween concert. Regular New Yorkers also passed by, wondering what everyone was lining up for. Some even asked if the crowd was with Occupy Wall Street (“Occupy Irving Plaza” was the real mission though).

Doors opened at 8pm, with jump-the-line tickets (an Irving Plaza ticket where you can skip the line for an extra $10), VIP and CWIF (fanclub) going in first. Miyavi started promptly an hour after doors opened at 9pm.

“New York, are you ready? WHAT’S MY NAME?”

He started out with the tour’s title song, “WHAT’S MY NAME?” playing guitar off stage to rile up the crowd before his drummer Bobo and Miyavi himself appeared on stage.

This was not Miyavi’s first time in New York City, but the crowd went wild as if it was. For some, it was their first time seeing him.

Miyavi started with a few new songs, “HELL NO,” “MUSIC FREE” and “A-HEAD” (these titles, as is Miyavi’s style, are subject to change). During “Hell No” he had the audience scream, “No no no no no!” back to him.

“This is my new track--are you ready to dance?” he said before playing “A-HEAD.” It was most certainly a dance track to which one can’t help but move their body along with the beat.

“My name is Miyavi, all the way from Tokyo!”

“WHAT’S MY NAME?!”

Nobody could possibly forget Miyavi.

“It’s my second time in New York. Having a good time, people? Am I rocking everybody? You guys rocking out there?

We had a show in San Francisco, LA, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Toronto and tonight New York City! Last time we had a show here, it was crazy…hot. But I’m sure tonight will be way hotter!”

It was true: last year, he played Irving Plaza in the summer – and it was sweltering to the point that people fainted. The staff had to provide the audience with a steady supply of water. This year, it was several degrees colder outside but still HOT inside (thankfully not to the extent that anybody passed out)!

After speaking, Miyavi played another new song titled “MUSIC FREE” on the setlist. It was a special treat for fans when Miyavi sang and spelled out “S-E-X--” while panting into the microphone. Definitely H-O-T.

“We can be one, right, people?”

BOOM-HA-BOOM-HA-HA was another fun song for everyone to clap and sing along to.

“Having fun with my crazy and weird music?”

“YES!”

“We had a show in Toronto last night, then we drove down to this f*cking crazy city, New York City. We dived in Niagara Falls and swam~.”

“This is my man Bobo. You know his name, right? Bobo who wears short shorts, showing off his pretty legs, right? Haha, gross. He’s a great drummer, ya? Only two people on stage, rocking the world.”

Miyavi also gave a shoutout to one of his crew, “Stage hand Pepsi! Mr. Pepsi who likes Coke. He’s a cool dude.”

Shelter was another great live song with Miyavi dancing while weaving back and forth with the beat. Miyavi demonstrated the hand motions the audience could also do, but most people preferred waving their arms up and down.

“Getting wet? It’s freaking hot in here. Last time I was here, I almost fainted. Thanks for having me again. Seriously. We’re having a good time on the road. Bunch of people are crazy. We love you. I so appreciate it.”

“Before I got here, I was walking around Union Square, seeing all the costumes. Is anyone in cosplay?” he asked the audience if they were dressed up (it was Halloween, after all). One girl shouted she was a demon, and it took a little clarification for Miyavi to understand it was “oni.”

“Sorry, I can’t speak English. I couldn’t speak English 5 years ago. Keep on teaching me English, okay?”

“Bobo speaks English too, you know. The only word he knows is, ‘What the f*ck.’ Always--never thought he would stop. Everytime. ‘What the f*ck.’ Enter the bathroom. ‘What the f*ck.’ He’s so shy, right? He’s a really great drummer. We went to Niagara Falls and was just like, ‘What the f*ck.’ It was crazy, like ‘What the f*ck.’ ‘What the f*ck’ so many tourists. We’re also tourists though, haha.”

The audience was in for a real treat when the sheet music was brought out along with an acoustic guitar. He told the audience how he knew everyone wanted to hear everything, especially older tracks, but he could only play a few of them.

His first song was Selfish Love--definitely a fan favorite. It wasn’t the entire song, but a good portion of it.

Miyavi then taught the audience how to say Bobo’s favorite phrase “What the f*ck,’ in Japanese. After the audience shouted it back at him, he was taken aback, “…oh…”

Next, he played a song many hoped for, but few expected to hear: “Itoshii Hito.” The audience went crazy and then quiet; some held hands with fellow Co-MYV, swaying to the music, and it brought tears to many eyes.

After Bobo’s drum solo, Miyavi once again introduced his drummer, “You know his name right? Bobo! Looks like Mexican from Brazil who likes Chinese food.”

Miyavi then had the audience call out his name for the who knows how many-th time that evening.

Futuristic Love turned into a Co-MYV dance party that went on for as long as Miyavi wanted it to. “Go beyond: Race, Gender, Generation, Nation, Language, Culture, Religion, History – BE ONE!”

The audience patiently waited for Miyavi and Bobo to come back on stage for an encore and nobody was disappointed to see them emerge in costume.

“We stopped by Ricky’s [costume shop]. Got these…so how do we look?” Miyavi was dressed in a cape and mask, perfect for the first song of the encore. “Do you know what? I am so embarrassed [in this outfit]. Tonight is Halloween! We can enjoy this Halloween party. So it’s fine, put a mask on…”

Bobo was in a cape and butterfly mask, which came off quickly. Two of the stage crew/staff also joined the Halloween spirit with their costumes. Mr. Pepsi was in a blonde wig and Spike was wearing a pirate hat and eye patch. Definitely a sight to see.

As Bobo was preparing, Miyavi kept speaking until someone from the audience shouted, “Señor Señora Señorita!” Miyavi’s “surprise” encore song had been ousted.

“Don’t say that, don’t say it! How rude!” he joked.

“Sorry!” the girl replied. Miyavi asked for his camera phone from the staff, and he went around stage photographing the audience members in costume.

At this point, a fan handed him a beautiful painting of Miyavi holding Lovelie as a newborn. “Oh, wow. See, this is me…and my son Bobo 36 years ago! No, this is my daughter Lovelie. Thank you.” He displayed the painting on stage rather than handing it off to the staff.

The live finished up with a 30-minute long encore with Miyavi shouting, “HAPPY HALLOWEEN!” He lingered on stage at the end, bowing and smiling. He jumped down in the space between the barrier and the stage and high-fived and shook as many hands as possible.

Miyavi fans consider themselves Co-MYV – BE ONE – a family. The concert definitely carried this atmosphere with the old and new Co-MYV friends that people made and met. Everyone simply followed Miyavi’s message.

Product Review: Ichikami Series

I'm pretty sure many of you have heard the phrase, “A girl's hair is her most prized possession.”

This is also the basic premise for Ichikami, whose name originates from the popular Japanese proverb, "いち髪二姿" (Hair first, looks second). This emphasizes the idea that if your hair isn't beautiful, then it's impossible to be entirely beautiful no matter how pretty your face may be, therefore, hair care should come before facial care.

My mother also, since I can remember, constantly reminded me the importance of taking good care of my hair and scalp. So naturally, it's important to choose a good shampoo and conditioner. Not only do you want your hair clean of all that icky build up, but you want it conditioned, manageable and healthy.

Healthy hair is important, especially for those of you who love to model yourself after your favorite celebrities and their hairstyles. Over the years I've put my hair through a lot, I've chemically straightened it a couple of times, constantly coloured it, and heat styling has also left its mark. Due to all of this, my hair has become fairly damaged to the point that my hair had its fair share of split ends, tangles, and it was definitely lacking in lustre.

And then came Ichikami.

A while back my friend gave me the Ichikami shampoo, conditioner and hair mask set when she came back from Japan. I had seen it at my local Asian grocer but had never bothered to try it.

The Ichikami series is from Kracie which was formerly known as Kanebo.

Designed for damaged hair, the product contains black rice essence which helps to boost the hair's moisture and lustre. It also contains 6 other pure Japanese herbal essences (Camelia also know as Tsubaki, Walnut, Belamcanda and Soapberry, Sasanqua and Sakura) all of which serves to repair and also strengthen the hair.

Another selling point of the shampoo is that it does not contain silicon—a chemical used in many shampoos to give the result of smooth silky hair after rinsing. Even though your hair will feel silky, silicone can also cause hair loss with prolonged usage.

The packaging is very feminine. The shampoo bottle is white, and the conditioner is black and pink which is helpful because I've used products where both shampoo and conditioner look similar and sometimes I accidentally pump out conditioner first.

The scent is also very feminine. The scent of wild sakura has a slight fruity tint to it but not to the point that it's overpowering or artificial. The consistency of the shampoo is not too watery or too thick and lathers up quite well. After rinsing, the shampoo leaves my hair feeling clean and not icky like some other shampoos do. However, it does leave my hair feeling a little like straw, so conditioning is absolutely essential.

The conditioner also smells pleasant, but the consistency is a little watery. Once I apply the conditioner to my hair, the straw-like feeling disappears and the hair feels fully conditioned. Within a couple days of usage, my hair has become shiny, tangle free and the ends less dry. On top of that the faint scent of the sakura is a plus for me.

Pros: Silicon free; pleasant smell; nourishing
Cons: Must use conditioner because shampoo dries out hair

The hair mask was highly recommended by my friend. It was ranked as one of the best products of 2009 on a well known Japanese cosmetic site called @Cosme

Prior to this, I was already using a hair mask from Kao's Essential line, so I was relatively familiar with Kao's products.

Ichikami's hair treatment contains black rice extract, soy bean/ black bean extract, and helps to repair and protect damaged hair. The extracts penetrate deep into the core of each hair strand and leaves hair feeling silky and shiny.

My first impression of the product again was how feminine it was with the black and pink colour scheme. However, I don't like the lid because it tends to break easily. A twist-to-open cap works better for me. Given it's 180g content I find the packaging is a little bulky compared to Essential's 200g packaging. Therefore the packaging of the product wasn't as satisfactory as other Kao products.

The scent of the hair mask is similar to the shampoo and conditioner with a consistency that's slightly thicker than the conditioner. I apply an appropriate amount to the ends of my hair, let it absorb the treatment for about 5-10minutes and rinse thoroughly. While rinsing I tend to comb my fingers through my hair to see if it has been conditioned enough to smoothly comb my fingers through.

The hair mask does leave my hair soft and smooth without a greasy feel to it but I personally feel it isn't comparable to Essential's hair treatment. The Essential product I had used left my hair feeling very hydrated, but Ichikami's hair treatment left results that were similar to regular conditioner.

My final verdict for the hair mask is “average”. The results I got were mediocre compared to the description's promises. Honestly, the packaging design really sold me at first, but considering its performance I probably would not make a repurchase. Price wise it's on the moderate side, but most worth your money if you purchased it on sale (at around $9 a bottle).

Takuya: Somehow Reita's image, especially from the talk about the other members about buying things...makes him seem immature?

Takuya: And he says his good point is that he likes pets.

Uruha: Like the ending was interesting but the movie was boring....but it's really the complete opposite (laughs)

Ruki: He tells us that this will happen and we'll definitely be surprised~but after watching it, what he described didn't happen at all (laughs)

Uruha: Yeah! It's completely different!

Takuya: (laughs) Are we going to get over this hurdle I wonder? But that's nice, isn't it? That he's interesting.

Kai: He's a really nice guy!

Takuya: Next, everyone says he wears his pants low.

Aoi: About the low pants thing, it's like, even if you say he's already a good grown up...

Ruki: He's always been like that but, well it's not that I want him to change it or anything. It's just, it's embarrassing just being with him, and the way he walks is so gangster like!

Takuya: AHAHAHA! The way he walks!
Uruha: and his pants are tacky!

Ruki: On top of that, he wears these satin varsity jackets!

Live Event: 雅 - "What's My Name?" Tour - Slim's, San Francisco 2011

“We’ve been here since 11 yesterday.”

My first thought? “Holy shit.”

This was only the beginning of Miyavi’s 2011 North and South America Circuit of the What’s My Name World Tour and people were camping out before he even officially started.

Dedicated fans lined 11th Street's pavement where the venue was located, and (perhaps as an extra treat), those who were lucky enough also got a chance to get a glimpse of Miyavi offstage as he went in and out of his trailer parked in front of Slim’s.

Following my intuition (and advice from friends), I decided to scope out the venue to figure out the situation before maybe wandering off to explore close by.

After seeing the lines that stretched out past Slim’s though, I decided I should probably stick around to make sure I would get a decent view of the stage. This was at around 17:45. The doors didn’t open until 20:00.

As I went around chatting with fans and other people who were there for the show, I also caught a glimpse of some people who had gone above and beyond to dress up and really make this a party.

The sky started to darken and the wind picked up, which wasn’t so bad for me in my three layers, but definitely bad for those who were preparing for an extremely hot live and had worn sleeveless tanktops and tshirts.

The box office opened at around 19:30, so will call (me included) got to pick up our tickets and hustle to the other line for actually getting into the venue.

The doors opened at around 20:00, and Co-Miyavi members were allowed in first with VIP following shortly after. The rest of the attendees was a long line against the building.

The actual live didn’t start until around 21:30, and there were a few false alarms when people would randomly cheer as if they were trying to lure Miyavi out of the stairwell.

When he did come out with Bobo, the crowd went wild. Extremely calm and down-to-earth people I had just been having a normal conversation with were suddenly screaming enthusiastically while waving their arms as Miyavi strutted onto the stage.

“What’s my name?! WHAT’S MY FUCKING NAME?!”

This wouldn’t be the first time Miyavi would ask this question, and yet no matter how many times he asked, the crowd never tired of it.

“MIYAVI!” everyone would scream back.

“WHAT’S MY FUCKING NAME?!”

“MIYAVIIIIIIIIIIIIII!”

He also thought it would be a great idea (and it was) if he pulled up his shirt, “You guys wanna see my new tat?” The happy screams around me were deafening.

The focus of the music was--of course--on his newest album in October 2010, but he played older fan requests which was a nostalgic taste in between all the new tracks.

He started with his electric guitar, and opened with “What’s My Name?” When he finished the song, he spoke to the audience when a girl who had been hanging on to his monitors screamed, “IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!”

Miyavi gave her an amused look before saying, “Happy birthday,” to the cheers of the audience. A bouquet that had been prepared for him by a fan also got passed up to the front, which he accepted graciously and spoke to the audience. One of his big phrases that night was, “San Francisco, I fucking love you.”

Later that night, the topic of him loving his fans would also come up when someone screamed, “I love you!” Miyavi replied calmly as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, “I know. Because I give you my love.”

Awesome, clever and frank much?

Although he started with his electric guitar, after a few songs, he switched to his acoustic. Before he started playing though, he spoke with the crowd, and the topic of how long people had been waiting for his live came up.

“Two days?!” his eyebrows went up in surprise. “That’s fucking crazy. You’re fucking crazy.”

When the fans cheered, someone wanted her hand shaken, to which Miyavi shook his head slightly, “No, I can’t. If I shake your hand, then I have to shake everyone else’s.”

“YEAAAAHHHH!” fans cheered.

“Ok,” Miyavi grinned at the audience. “We can do that, but we’ll have to stop the show now or we won’t have enough time.”

At some point, he also spoke in Japanese, “私は雅です(Watashi wa Miyavi desu)。あなたは・・・最高 (Anata wa...saikou)。Not ‘psycho’,” he stressed in English. “最高 is Japanese for ‘awesome.’ You guys are awesome.”
Following this brief compliment, Miyavi also talked about learning English.

“You know, I went to study English in LA five years ago,” he held out five fingers to the audience. “It was hard, and blah blah blah.” Everybody laughed as he looked bored already with his own story. “You guys understand me, right?” The fans chorused, “Yes!” before Miyavi gestured to the back of the venue.

“Good, because sometimes people don’t even fucking know when I’m speaking in English or Japanese. Like those guys in the back, they think I’m fucking speaking in Japanese or something.”

He pointed at Bobo, “Bobo speaks a little bit of English too. The only word he knows is, ‘Hola.’” In continuation of the joke, he also called Bobo a “Brazilian Mexican" later on to which Bobo gave a resigned smile and the crowd laughed again.

At some point, one of the fans presented a banner than many other fans had signed that wished Jewelie happy birthday.

"Oh whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa," Miyavi looked happily surprised when he saw the banner and a wide smile spread on his face. "In Japan time, yeah, my second daughter made fucking one year," he held up a finger insistently. "Yeah, thanks for your celebration my sweet and precious," he gestured as if he was reciting poetry, "shining," he looked up at the ceiling as if he was surveying something far away, "and crazy...daughter, Jewelie." He took the banner with a happy grin and held it up for the fans to see.

“Yeah, I got a present for her,” when the crowd laughed, he continued with a deadpan face, "Yeah, we went to Gap Kids,” he jerked this thumb back. When the audience, "Awwed," he chuckled. "No, seriously, I got something for her. So, I'll see her tomorrow in LA," he nodded as the audience cheered.

"I'm sure my daughters are gonna be banging their heads during my show," he did a minor "headbang" (that actually resembled bobble head figurines).

He also talked about Lovelie and Jewelie and how they rock out with him at home.

“Always, always, you know, Lovelie, my other one is alllways, y'know, shaking her," he shook his hips in imitation of his elder daughter. "And playing the mini guitar like me, 'BUUU, BUUU,'" he imitated the distortion of his daughter's "mini guitar". "'Daddi,'" he imitated Lovelie's pointing at her father. Clearly, they had another rockstar in the making at home.

Miyavi held his hands up, as if to say, "Well, what can you do?" before smiling and saying, "Crazy, right? And Jewelie, the second daughter's, always like, 'What the fuck are you doing?'" he imitated Jewelie's blank confused face.

"But once the music starts," he continued, "she starts, 'Fuuum fuuum,'" and he showed the audience Jewelie's uniquely drunken head bang/roll. He grinned again.

"Crazy. Thank you."

I think the audience came to love the kids as much as they loved the father that night.

He chatted on a bit and did a few more songs before asking, “Alright, what songs do you want to hear--” Before finishing his question though, the fans started shouting titles that weren’t from What’s My Name?

“Ok, wait, wait,” he held the mic stand, and there was a slight grin on his face. “Let them speak. Let the crazy people who waited here for a fucking two days tell me what they want to hear.”

The audience laughed, and while there were fewer people shouting, someone shouted a name of an older song that had been played on his electric guitar.

He gave the audience a highly skeptical look, “You want me to play that on my acoustic guitar?”

The audience laughed and he tried to convince everyone to pick a song from “the new tracks”--which no one did.

Eventually Señor, Señora, Señorita won out, and Miyavi turned to Bobo, saying in Japanese, “Just some of it,” before turning back to the audience and saying, “Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Sorry, I don’t remember all the lyrics to the old tracks, so can you sing it with me?”

In actuality, he jammed out the song very well for someone who didn’t “remember" it, and the audience loved it.

Immediately after Señor, Señora, Señorita, an audience member (from right behind me) yelled on behalf of one of the fans, "MIYAVIIIII!!! THIS IS FOR YOU!"

Miyavi turned to see one of the fans in the front row holding out a miniature hand-made plush of him, complete with one of his outfits and a hat sewed on. He strode over and picked it up, "Thanks!" before returning to the center of the stage. "It's mini me," he declared before changing his voice and holding up the doll.

"I'm from San Francisco! I'm mini Miyavi!" the doll rasped.

"No, really," Miyavi insisted, "Where're you from?"

"I'm from fucking Tokyo!" Miyavi gazed at it for another second before pulling hard on the "mini Miyavi's" hat, "I can't take off my hat!" mini Miyavi growled. "I can't take off my hat!! I'm can't take off my hat!!!"

Miyavi looked over at the girl who had given him the gift before giving her a warm, "Thank you," and placing mini Miyavi on the stand behind him where the bouquet also rested.

In between all the sets, Miyavi made the live intimate and I’m sure everyone felt pretty warm and fuzzy inside--if they weren’t already warm from being surrounded on all sides by very excited people and weren’t fuzzy from the bar that was at the back of the live house.

Eventually the first set ended, but soon enough, after chanting, “MIYAVI. MIYAVI. MIYAVI,” a few times, both Miyavi and Bobo emerged from the stairwell, this time wearing the tour tshirts.

Part way through a song, Miyavi also grabbed a water bottle, and took what seemed to be a sip, but in reality was just a mouthful of water. He strode over to the left side of the stage (right above me), and what seemed to be a giant water/spit bubble landed on a few people in the front (me) while others got a spray of saliva.

When he finished the song and finished spraying the center section as well, he only offered a few words of apology (which weren’t very apologetic at all), “Sorry I got you guys wet. I--I’m also wet."

After a song, Miyavi spoke again, “I’m actually not sure why the fuck we’re wearing...my T-shirt.”

Everybody laughed and clapped.

The encore lasted about half an hour, before Miyavi and Bobo finished the concert for real. People swarmed over to the merchandise table, which had tour T-shirts (black and white) available along with hoodies, sweaters, posters and wristbands.

The next great thing about this live was the fans. Everyone was very friendly and outgoing, so even though I didn’t know anyone going in to the concert, I definitely left Slim’s with some new friends. It doesn’t mean much coming from me, but Miyavi fans, thanks for being such a nice group of people. You were the other factor that made this live so fun.

All in all, this was a great live. Although the audience did have to wait another half hour before the show actually started, I think that and the money everyone paid was extremely worth it since Miyavi really made the live a very intimate personal experience.

For those who attended the live and (for some reason) are reading this--it was awesome seeing/meeting/knowing you!

For those who will be attending the rest of the lives in the leg--have fun! I’m sure you will because Miyavi was/is seriously just that awesome.

Luckily for us, Rock and Read's ameblo has a nice "behind the scenes" going on for those of us who can't always just bust into a photoshoot to ogle our favorite celebrities.

Live Event: 2nd ScReW Q&A at Brand X, Tokyo (2010), Part II

Ok~! This is the last part of the Brand X in-store event from before! This one's quite interesting since it's got quite a few personality quizzes embedded inside, and Byou had some verryyyy interesting reactions and answers to them. To give you a little hint--the way Byou chases after taxis he wants to ride tells you a lot about how he goes after girls he's interested in. He might even be considered a stalker by some standards and have to get reported to the police!

Yeah right, like any of you would have a problem being stalked by Byou. I think he'd have to put restraining order on the people wanting to be stalked by him instead...

Aoi: Well, he can say whatever he wants, right!

Live Event: J-pop Summit Festival 2011

It's been a bit quiet on the blog this week, but I promise it was for a good reason!

Last weekend (Aug. 27-28) was the annual J-pop Summit Festival in San Francisco. Since I live close by, I figured I'd hop on a train and take the ride up to check it out. After getting in touch with the Summit organizers, I also managed to get a press pass, which meant entry into shows that otherwise meant I'd have to pay for (h.Naoto fashion show, anyone?).

All in all, it was a pretty fun festival. This is the 3rd annual Summit, so I wasn't too worried about how fun it might not be since the festival obviously was popular enough to continue on for 3 years.

I got there early on Saturday morning with my brother at around 9am, and even though it was early, Japantown was already bustling with plenty of people setting up their booths and the Summit organizers running around and speaking into their walkie-talkies in a mix of Japanese and English.

After staffing at AM2, I'll just say that I was pretty happy to experience the fest as a press pass holder instead of a staffer. It's nice to relax once in a while, even if AM2 was awesome, y'know?
And by relax, I meant explore the food trucks. In case you didn't know, to be a part of Michido, you kinda have to love food. Like, really love it. Love it to the point you dream about buffets. So it made plenty of sense for me to make a beeline for the food trucks (which I had researched thoroughly, by the way) and ponder the options.
I'd have to say that my favorite (but most pricey (；´Д｀) ) food was from the Brass Knuckles food truck. We got the Snoop Dog, which was actually not worth $7, in my opinion, but still pretty delicious. For those of you who knows of the infamous Vancouverian Japa-dog, this was probably the closest you'll get down here in San Francisco.

While ~~stuffing my fat face~~ eating my food, I also went around to the other stalls to get a look at other attractions. One of the major draws was the fortune telling booth, hosted by diviner Hoshi and Juno. I felt a bit shy about asking for a photo (because he was pretty good looking in person, haha), but he was happy to give it to me. The booth was pretty popular, and as I passed by it both days, there were people who were constantly going to find out what they could learn about themselves from Hoshi.

One of the other awesome things to see was Hechi-ken Hamazaki's "you aRE goD" tea ceremony. To those of you who don't really know about this (I didn't), I'll explain it in a way to make it easy for you.

Take the Blueman group. Switch the blue makeup for white. Wear bright red clothes. Set up a tea ceremony. Voila, you have "you aRE goD".

And what made this exhibit even better than any other tea ceremony I've ever been in was--yes, you probably didn't guess it--a lolita. I don't think you get the chance to see things like this very often, even if it was in Japan.
At some point, I wandered over to the New People building, where there were plenty of other fun things going on. Nico Nico was doing a live broadcast when I stopped by, and there were also free tshirts (more news on this later! Stay tuned!). The Nico Nico guys were quite a cute bunch, and after chatting with them, I headed up to the third floor for the h.Naoto fashion show.
This was my first time attending and shooting a fashion show, so now my admiration for fashion photographers skyrocketed after this. Even though there were awesome outfits, it was hard to take a clear picture. At the fashion show, h.Naoto introduced his outfits and explained the inspirations behind each outfit. For those who couldn't see the fashion show, there was also a fashion contest the next day with h. Naoto and wonderful Cynthia Anderson (of Style Wylde fame). I got a chance to chat with Cynthia before the fashion show and came to the conclusion that fashion bloggers = incredible. Hope to see her again someday!

h.Naoto also had a pop up shop that was only open for that weekend. When it closed, fans would have to wait until October to get a chance to start purchasing his goods for real at the official h.Naoto store in the New People.

Other events included a fashion show by Sou・Sou featuring traditional and modern Japanese fashion fusion as well as screenings of various animes and movies (Gantz!!! Which I missed...). The Vocaloid themed activities also got a lot of attention along with the air band concert performed by K-On's voice actresses. One of my personal favorites was watching the Jazz musician, Emi Meyer, perform on stage.

For those of you who didn't get to attend this year, I'd definitely check it out next year! The food is good, the attractions are great, and the people are nice--all the factors to a great festival. And, to my surprise, there were a lot of awesome cosplayers--one of whom was my high school classmate!!

All-in-all, thanks Japantown and J-pop Summit Festival organizers! I had a great first year with you all, and I'm hoping you'll be back for 2012!

Takuya: Tonight we're going to start with a class called “the GazettE Seminar.” Let's just call it “Gaze-sem” for short. The subject of this particular investigation are the band members of the GazettE, and will be brought to you in a report style. Just before this, we had each member fill out a questionnaire...Basically, it's going to be a judgement of each individual~ Aoi, can we get you to step out for a moment?

The Gazette: Hahaha!

Aoi: Do I really have to go out?

Reita: Get out~get out~ (laughs)

Takuya: We're going to have everyone step outside the studio once at some point for about 5 minutes.

Aoi: Eh? Eh?

The Gazette: Hahaha

Aoi: Isn't that cruel? That's a little cruel.

The Gazette: Hahaha

First, we have Aoi step out of the studio, and the questionnaire starts with him.

Takuya: “His hobby is coffee,” is what Uruha wrote (laughs)

Uruha: Huh? I did?

Takuya: He loves and is obsessed with coffee, seems to like to recommend it to people too. But that's a good point about Aoi?

☆He loves bikes. Since Reita is the only one he can talk to about bikes, both of them talk about bikes pretty often. Invited Reita out for a bike ride but he didn't seem to have went (laughs)

Aoi also seems to have lots of hobbies and he's....shallow!?

The Gazette: Hahaha

Reita & Ruki: He's shallow!

Takuya: Oh, I see, even Aoi is nodding his head outside the studio. (laughs)

☆ He's generous.

Reita: He often treats people...he bought me nikuman, and on my birthday he gave me a pack of cigarettes. He put it in my pocket.

Ruki: He bought me juice, but I forced him to buy it.

Uruha: You're dirty! (laughs)

Aoi also has paid for their meals (individually). He really has that big brother type of personality.

Something you want him to change

Ruki: I want him to stop showing off his macho-ness imitations and flexing his muscles behind us when we're putting on makeup. (laughs)

Takuya: He does that?! Wooooow Ao~i...Ah! He's gone~

the Gazette: Ahahaha

Takuya: Oh! And we have a “NO WAY” from Aoi. (laughs) Ah, “no way”? Well since it's funny it should be fine, right? Kai seems to want him to change that too. Is it that bad?

Kai: He used to surf so he's got a nice body. His physique is my ideal type of body...it really has become my ideal type...

Uruha: Your ideal body type you say huh~ (laughs)

Aoi's personal report

Takuya: He's chivalric.

Ruki: Ah~that's definitely because of his muscles. (laughs)

Takuya: And what he wants to change about himself is his over generosity. Aoi doesn't seem to want to treat people so much (laughs)

Reita: Aoi's fickle--I'm not trying to criticize him or anything, but there are lots of fickle people, right?

Ruki: Dude, you are criticizing him. (laughs)

Takuya: Seems like there are a lot of things written about him here--he's fickle, the type that can't be bothered...Reita, are you talking about yourself?

Reita: Ah no, I wrote that about myself too.

Ruki: Well, then why don't you tell us about it. (laughs)

Reita: Well~everyone is similar...the only person who isn't fickle is Kai.

Takuya: Ah, really?

Reita: But he's kind of not really here at the moment...

Kai: I'm here! I'm here! (laughs)

Takuya: Kai, if everyone is fickle, does that irritate you?

Kai: No, I don't. I don't get pissed...but, Reita...you~ ah, it's because it's Aoi, and you're at it again (laughs)

Takuya: Alright Aoi, welcome back!

Aoi: Aah~I'm sorry, like seriously, I really am. Just so you guys know.

Hi, everyone!! We've got a post about another band we haven't covered before--ScReW!

It's another in-store event, this time with Brand X at their Ikebukuro branch in Tokyo.

We meant to get this up some time last week, but both of us were busy with school and work, so it's a bit delayed. In return though, this is a pretty long post, so things kinda balance out.

Now onto how Rui loves girls in tiger-print bikinis--er, I did not just spoil anything for you (;´∀｀)

Part 1

Q.1 If you could become anyone of the members who would you want to be?

Manabu wants to be Byou

Manabu: I can be a cool looking guy, and while I'm oozing “coolness” I want to walk along Ikebukuro.

Yada: Why Ikebukuro?

Manabu: Because we're in Ikebukuro right now (laughs). Shinjuku or Shibuya is ok too.

While Manabu was talking, Kazuki started to poke at Jin's chair, making Jin scoot to the side. Jin couldn't take it anymore and stood up.

Manabu: Anyways, (to Jin) you know, you don't look very big.

Jin: Speaking of the others, I want to become one of the other members and perform up front.

Yada: How about performing right in the middle of the guests' seats?

Jin: (laughs) Sure!

Yada: There's an overseas band with the drummer performing at the very front.

Jin: Ah, I think I've heard of that before.

Yada: But he had his back facing the audience, so that means if you do it everyone will be looking at your butt.

Jin: (laughs)

Kazuki wants to be Rui

Kazuki: I can play with Maru as much as I want.

Ruki: Maru as in my cat

Yada: Oh? Have you met it before?

Kazuki: Yeah, once.

Rui: The other day, Manabu and Kazuki came over to my place and Kazuki kept doing (pretends to stroke a cat's chin) that to my cat.

Yada: What was Manabu doing?

Manabu: His cat didn't even pay attention to me, it felt like I was being ignored.
Rui wants to be Byou.

Rui: Manabu and I are taken away by Byou--I want to ooze out sex appeal and walk along Ginza.

Yada: At...Ginza huh? (laughs)

Byou wants to be Jin

Byou: I want to be bullied. Well, just to an extent where it's not overdone, so it's kind of not really bullying. (laughs)

Kazuki: It's important to not be too harsh. (laughs)

Q.2 Favorite girl's attire
Byou: Black OL attire. (OL as in office lady)

Rui: I like Lum.

Yada: Umm (laughs) Lum as in...

Rui: Yup, from Urusei Yatsura.

Yada: Ah, if I'm not mistaken Lum's wearing a bikini with a similar pattern to Raijin?

Rui: Yup, that’s right.

Yada: Oooh! Well then, you want girls to come to lives like that too?

Rui: No, not for lives. (laughs) I'd be in trouble.(laughs)

Yada: So you'd be in trouble, eh. (laughs) You just want a situation where you can walk the streets normally with her?

Rui: Well...something like that (laughs) If it's her, then it's fine. (laughs)

Yada: I see, so if it's Lum then it's all good, but she would probably get arrested (laughs)

Rui: Yeah, since she's showing too much (laughs)

Yada: Ah no, I mean...

Rui: Oh? You mean me? (laughs) Okay, fine, arrest me (laughs)

Yada: Alright, so Kazuki what kind of Lum do you...

Kazuki & audience: Whaaat?! (laughs)

Yada: Ah, sorry! (laughs)

Kazuki: The usual Lum is fine (laughs) Hmm...Actually if it looks good, anything is fine with me.

Yada: What if it were skirts or pants?

Kazuki: Skirts!!!

Jin: It's summer, so the less the better.

Yada: We're not talking about how much you need on (laughs)

Jin: Ahhh (laughs). Well, I also think whatever looks good on is fine.

Yada: What about a cloak?

Jin: (laughs) Yeah

Yada: What about with Lum's attire under the cloak?

Jin: (laughs) Yes! (laughs)

Kazuki: Well, that's a job well done!

Jin: Oh yeah. (laughs)

Yada: Oh really? (laughs)

Manabu: If it's feminine I don't really care.

Yada: In what way?

Manabu: Umm, like hair? I think long hair is pretty feminine.

Yada: What about the length of Rui's hair.

Manabu: Aah, that's good too (laughs)

Q.3 Are you still smoking even with the tax increase on cigarettes?

First off, Screw members were asked who smoked. Everyone raised their hands.

Second, they were asked who was still smoking. Everyone raised their hands.

How much are you willing to pay?

Byou, Rui and Manabu are willing to pay up to 1000yen.

Kazuki is willing to pay around 500yen.

Yada: What brand are you smoking?

Kazuki: Marlboro Menthol

Yada: Isn't that around 400yen now?

Kazuki: What?! That's expensiveeeeee! (laughs)

Yada: It used to be around 200yen right.

Kazuki: Oh really? I didn't know that.

Yada: That was way back in the day, when I was still a student.

Jin: Hmm, around 300yen for me?

Yada: Ah then it's going to be hard for you (laughs)

Jin: Hmmm, maybe 1000yen? Ah around 500yen?

Yada: Isn't that a wide range?

Jin: (laughs) Around 500yen.

Q4. Who do you think “sparkles” the most today?

On the count of 3 please point to that person.

Results:

At first Manabu was pointing to no one in particular, but then he pointed to Gotou.

Rui's reason for picking Byou:

Rui: His glasses are nice.

Yada: How so?

Rui: Hmm...it really suits him?...Um, never mind I'm sorry! (laughs)

Q.5 If you had to live together with a member who would it be?

Byou chose Rui.

Byou: Every time I read his blog he always has delicious looking food posted.

Yada: Do you like eating?

Byou: I like curry and baseball.

Yada: (laughs) Can you make curry?

Rui: Hmm? Oh, yeah I can.

Yada: What kind?

Rui: Huh?

Yada: Like vegetable curry or...

Rui: Oh, umm just the usual kind.

Yada: What do you eat it with? Rice?

Rui: I eat it with rice when I'm at home, but at restaurants I eat it with Nan bread.

Rui chose Jin

Rui: He can make you feel really laid back...plus, I want to keep him as a pet.

Kazuki picked Rui

Kazuki: His blog has been looking like a cooking blog lately. (laughs)

Yada: What do you want him to make for you?

Kazuki: Bread!

Rui: What?!

Kazuki: Bread!

Yada: (laughs) You want to eat it with bread?

Kazuki: I had bread just now, I had a sausage bun.

Yada: A sausage bun? (laughs) Rui you're going to have a lot of work.

Rui: Huh? Anyone can make sausage buns.

Yada: Then you're going to start with making the sausages, right?

Rui: Whaaaat?! (laughs) I'm not going to go that far (laughs)

A moment later...

Rui: Okay, maybe I want to try it.

Jin also picked Rui

Yada: Oooh, we have a couple! You guys can be a couple

Jin: We're a couple (laughs and Jin starts whistling)
It's cause he makes food for me (laughs).

Yada: And next we have Manabu, who no one has selected yet.

Manabu: I'm going with Jin.

Yada: Oh! Are you trying to snatch away someone else's love?

Manabu: (laughs) Yes, I am (laughs)
When we get put in the same room during tours and it's just Jin and me, somehow I end up falling asleep right away.

Yada: Huh?! Is that because he doesn't want to talk to you?

Manabu: Ah no, it's just...I feel relaxed?

Jin: He usually holds his guitar to sleep. (laughs)

Yada: You don't wake him up?

Jin: Ah, he looks kind of cute that way, so I don't wake him up.

Yada: What do you do then?

Jin: I'm on my computer

Reita: Yeah, excuse us. That's just how we are...

DJ: Why are you apologizing (laughs) The tempo of the song gives off a good feeling and it also sounds cool. It really is cool.

Aoi: Ah, of course. We sure did well on the song, didn't we.

Reita: We sure did.

Aoi: I'm sorry~I'm sorry! (Imitates Ｕ字工事 here) Aah~that wasn't funny was it?

Reita: Ah no, don't worry your joke was a complete slip.

Aoi: Ah (laughs)

DJ: In the middle of such a tight schedule, when do you guys start recording?

Aoi: Ah, it's that you know... in your dreams, you do it on your butt, during the summer...you do it all over the country. Great, did I just tell another lame joke?

DJ & Reita: (Dry laugh)

Aoi: Anyways, we did a national tour.

Reita: Yeah, yeah, we did a national tour.

Aoi: During the break between our travel days, we had to go back to Tokyo...

DJ: So within that interval, you had to travel around since there was going to be a performance somewhere the next day.

Reita: Yeah! We had to pull ourselves together for that period of time.

DJ: Wow...

Aoi: Right in that moment

Reita: Yeah (laughs)

DJ: That's amazing, must be really tough.

Reita: It was hard.

Aoi: Well...I thought it was a piece of cake.

DJ:...So you have good concentration powers?

Reita: (quickly) What! No! Nothing like that at all!

DJ: If you have time then... (laughs)

Reita: If you say that, the manager is going to have us do it again!

DJ: He'll think, “Ah you guys can do it” and your schedule is going to get waaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse (laughs)

Reita: No, it's not going to happen!

DJ: And, in the questionnaire you wrote “If it's too hard, I'm going to go bald.”

Aoi: Ah, that...

DJ: What places are you referring to when you say “balding”??--If it's okay to ask.

Aoi: There's nowhere else but the hair on your head, right.

Reita: You know, I'm even wearing a hat right now.

DJ: Are you trying to hide it?

Reita: The other day I was walking along the streets and this pre-schooler said to me “Hey, it's Kappa!”

DJ & Aoi: Ahahahahahaha (laughs)

DJ: You're kidding! You're balding to that extent?? (laughs)

Reita: No no, I'm joking, just joking.

DJ: You'd describe it to that extent in terms of your feelings, right?

Reita: Yeah.

DJ: And it's not something that has become reality.

Reita: Yeah, I'm still doing fine.

DJ: Good to hear you are still doing alright. How is recording going for you, Reita?

Reita: Its nothing but tiring. From audio mixing, to coming back to Tokyo mid tour...oh and also filming the PVs.

Aoi: Yeah

Reita: The filming during the tour was really tough. During the waiting time, we were seriously having a hard time.

DJ: Ah, I see, I see.

Aoi: Yeah.

DJ: How do you endure with the waiting time?

Reita: Just slept.

DJ: No way—even if there wasn't a “speciality” of that region...you just kept taking breaks

Reita: There was nothing to do but sleep. There wasn't any internet at the hotel where we filmed.

Aoi: Yeah.

Reita: So it was just, “What should we do?” and when I'm on the streets I get called “Kappa.”

Aoi: Ahahaha (laughs)

DJ: (laughs) The “Kappa” joke again! Next up we're going to play a song from tomorrow's release.

We've got our first ever....*drum roll* Sadie entry!!!

Remember this thing we tweeted a couple of days ago?

A lot of the Twitter followers went wild, and there were so many hopeful answers/guesses, but only one lucky (or incredibly savvy!) person got the right answer.

Kudos to blue_spaces! Congrats!

And with that said we now present to you our very first Sadie entry. At the Nagoya Like an Edison in-store event back in March 2008, Sadie answered a few randomly selected questions submitted by the fans. Despite their serious, intimidating and hardcore persona, the Sadie members are actually a bunch of clowns!

Aki: Do I have to say it? You guys don't really want to know right?

Audience: We want to know!

Aki: (Menacingly) Are you all sure about that?....Well...I do.

Mao: At this rate, you're going to really start talking dirty. As for me, I'm a cool S during the first half, become an M in the middle, and then finish the last half as an S.

This is kind of ordinary, but for me it's smoking.

Mizuki: What does that have to do with “growing out of something”?

Aki: Well...I just want to go back to sleep.

Mizuki: Anyways, if you smoke you'll definitely say smoking, but for me it's....um...piercings. I think there's a nice feel to them.

Kei: You two really like to get piercings. (referring to Mizuki & Mao)

Mizuki: We're gradually becoming more grown up. (laughs)

Q3. Among the members who is the most perverted? Also, who is a closet pervert?

Mao: Instead of answering, how about everyone decide from how we look.

With that, the members closed their eyes while the audience votes were tallied by raising their hands.

The results:

The number one pervert: Mizuki (with the most votes)

The closet pervert: Aki and Tsurugi were tied, and this put Kei in charge of deciding which of the two would be the closet pervert of Sadie.

Kei: Who here thinks Aki is a closet pervert?

Aki: Can I see a raise of hands?

Mao: Yes!

People raised their hands, but the number was a little less than the actual.

Aki: Is this less than the vote we had just now?

Since some people were afraid of putting up their hands, Tsurugi won the title of closet pervert.

Tsurugi: I'm not a closet pervert! When I'm with the other members, I don't try to hide anything!

Mizuki: That's what closet perverts say.

Q4. What's your charming point?

Here each of the members will give a charming feature about the person sitting to their left.

All the members in Sadie don't seem to play games very much. Mao doesn't even seem to have a DS. Mao got a lot of games for presents and that was sort of troublesome, giving that he doesn't seem to play games.
