In this update, former Michigan goalie Bryan Hogan puts some equipment up for sale, including some of the maize n’ blue variety. Coach Berenson comments at Chicago Coaches Tour stop. The Big Ten announces their head of officiating (Gongshow!). Max Pacioretty is putting up big numbers at the World Championship. And an update on commit Alex Kile and the Green Bay Gamblers quest for the USHL Clark Cup.

Former Michigan goalie Bryan Hogan posted this photo on Twitter this evening with the note “All for sale. Contact me if interested.” As you can see, some of that hockey equipment is his Michigan gear. If interested, you can find Hogan on Twitter under the handle BryanPWHogan.

BERENSON COMMENTS IN CHICAGO

Michigan head coach Red Berenson took part in the U-M Coaches Tour in Chicago last night. The Detroit Free Press has a recap of the event. Red praised senior goalie Shawn Hunwick:

Berenson praised goalie Shawn Hunwick who went from walk-on to Hobey Baker finalist, impressive for a player Berenson said would never play for U-M: “that’s the thing we’re learning… you never say never.”

He also said he’d like to see the BTHC tournament in Chicago:

Berenson said he hopes the upcoming Big Ten hockey title game gets to Chicago at some point.

Right now the Big Ten tournament is slated to rotate between the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul (2014, 2016) and Joe Louis Arena in Detroit (2015, 2017).

On the topic of recruiting early commitments, the Free Press writes:

Berenson said recruiting sophomores is a challenge to hold a commitment for that long but it’s necessary to keep up.

The Coaches Tour makes a swing up the West Coast next week, but Berenson will not be a part of it.

PIOTROWSKI TO HEAD BIG TEN OFFICIALS

According to USCHO yesterday, the Big Ten named Steve Piotrowski its coordinator of men’s ice hockey officials following the conclusion of the 2012-13 season. Piotrowski is currently the Director of Officiating for the CCHA.

Of course, this raises a caution flag among fans seeing as the state of CCHA officiating has deteriorated to gongshow levels over the past few seasons under his watch. I understand officials are human and sometimes get it wrong. It’s not a job I would want. But you would think after a few years there would be a level of consistency among the men in stripes, but instead it just got worse and worse to the point half of yourself would shake your head and laugh at how bad a call was and the other half of you was shaking your fist in rage.

If Piotrowski’s first decision is to migrate current CCHA officials over to the Big Ten Hockey Conference, that caution flag instantly becomes a red flag.

PACIORETTY ON FIRE AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

While all the talk before the IIHF World Championship was on former Wolverine defenseman Jack Johnson, it’s another former Wolverine who is making a statement in Finland.

Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty has quietly put up “the most points by any U.S. player at the IIHF Men’s World Championship since at least 1975,” says the USA Hockey press release following the American’s 5-2 win over Switzerland today. Pacioretty had two assists in the win, giving him 2-10-12 in seven games to lead the U.S. in scoring.

Today’s game closed out the preliminary round. The U.S. will face defending champion Finland Thursday at 11:30 a.m. ET with the game available on NBC Sports Network. The Americans blanked Finland 5-0 on May 13.

GAMBLERS TIE UP CLARK CUP FINAL

The Green Bay Gamblers shut out Waterloo, 2-0, on Sunday to tie up the USHL Clark Cup Final series 1-1. Michigan commit Alex Kile netted the empty net goal in the win.

In the opening game for the championship, the Black Hawks shocked the Gamblers, 2-1. Kile had no points, five shots on goal, and two penalty minutes in the loss.

Game 3 takes place Friday night in Waterloo. The championship is decided in a best of five series.

BLUES’ GIFTS TO BERENSON
When Michigan hockey head coach Red Berenson scored six goals in one game on November 7, 1968, what did the St. Louis Blues owners reward him with? According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

… ownership presented the outdoor enthusiast with a new station wagon, a canoe attached to the top and a Browning 20-gauge shotgun inside.

Berenson, who had played previously in Montreal and New York, commented: “In New York or Montreal, all you’d get would be a handshake.”

I think there’s a great Photoshop opportunity involving Red, a station wagon, canoe, and shotgun if anyone is up to the challenge.

MORE TROUBA? MORE TROUBA
In addition to being on NHL Live a few days ago, NHL.com had yet another write up on the future Wolverine blue liner. Let the praise train begin…

“He skates well, is physical, he moves the puck, and communicates pretty well on the ice,” (WJC coach Dean) Blais said. “He doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes, and he’s just going to get better and better.”

“From where he was last year as an underage player to where he is now, he’s developed physically and has even passed some players his age,” Central Scouting’s Jack Barzee told NHL.com. “He’s very mature and pretty close to what he’s going to be [in the NHL] … he’s got confidence, tenacity, combativeness and leadership qualities.”

“There are all kinds of stories of guys that are thought of who will be really high and then you have to live up to those expectations, they naturally fall off,” Central Scouting’s David Gregory said. “With Trouba, he stepped in and showed leadership, showed unbelievable skill and ability to lug the puck, defend and be tough. So he’s a complete package-type defenseman who skates so well that he’ll make someone very happy in this draft.”

Gregory compares him to Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle, only faster! Wait, this isn’t football. Make that a bigger hitter.

NO MORE SWISS PUDDING

Former Wolverine star Jeff Tambellini helped the ZSC Lions capture the Switzerland National League A championship last month and recently talked to ESPN about the season and their coach, Bob Hartley, who might be in line to make a return to the NHL. Hartley made it a priority to recruit Tambellini to the Swiss league, and there he took a team of soft players and changed the culture of the locker room.

“There will be no more Swiss pudding in this group,” (Hartley) said often. “I will turn you into Lions.”

Tambellini remembers the looks on their faces when he repeated it and repeated it often.

“The guys hated it,” Tambellini said. “Oh, they hated it. It’s such a proud country.”

Tambellini certainly became a believer in Hartley and thinks he deserves another shot in the NHL.

Brian at MGoBlog is starting up a MGo Hall of Fame and has listed his first nominees for hockey from 2007-11. The candidates are Shawn Hunwick, Jack Johnson, T.J. Hensick, Kevin Porter, and Carl Hagelin. If you want to add your two cents, follow the link and post in the comments. My two picks were Hensick and Porter and a question mark on Hunwick. My comments on each one are after the jump. Feel free to agree or disagree.

I guess it all depends what you want to base it on–a player’s whole career or one or two good/great seasons?

I love Shawn and his story is phenomenal. Statistically on GAA and save percentage records he should be included. However, based over the course of a whole career, it’s tough. He went from walk-on who was never suppose to play, to magical run when least expected to save Michigan’s NCAA tourney streak. But the following season Hunwick was actually LOSING the starting job battle to Bryan Hogan and had it not been for Hogan suffering an injury prior to The Big Chill, we might not be talking about Hunwick being included today. Shawn certainly made the most of his opportunity after that. My biggest knock would be the big rebounds he always gave up. But a good defense helps out and they certainly did that for Shawn at times, too. Hunwick stood on his head many a game, too, and never got the credit he deserved. When I think of Michigan’s past great goalies, would I put Hunwick up there with Marty Turco in the first go round of voting? I can’t say that I would, but I can’t say that I wouldn’t, either.

Jack Johnson. Can’t do it. LOVE Jack and everything he’s accomplished. But the two years he spent at Michigan, the Wolverines were like watching a circus freak show more than a hockey game. Fans went just to chant “Kill, Jack, Kill!” rather than cheer the team. He was obviously very talented, however more times than not Jack acted more like a fourth forward than top line DEFENSEMAN on the ice. I lost count on how many times he and Matt Hunwick left Billy Sauer out to dry due to poor decisions like pinching when they shouldn’t or simply just getting beat (totally remember a game at the Joe vs. MSU where the Spartan player won a face off in the MSU zone and skated straight ahead right through Hunwick/Johnson and scored). Sauer may not have been the best goalie, but the year after Jack left I remember predicting in my season preview that it may be addition by subtraction for the U-M defense. Though only remembered for his NCAA semifinal meltdown that season, Sauer did set Michigan’s single season GAA and save percentage records the year after Jack left. That speaks volumes to me.

T.J. Hensick is a definite yes from me. His attitude issues aside, the kid was phenomenal his whole career. I don’t always hold his attitude against him, either. Yes, it was frustrating to watch Sauer in net his first two years when Hensick was there and perhaps T.J. shouldn’t have vented his frustration on national TV during the NCAA playoffs (I remember the reporter asking him about Sauer and T.J., obviously not happy, said something like “I don’t know what’s going on with him.”). But you can also choose to interpret it as the competitor inside him. I remember another short, uber-talented center who was a glory hound and had a feisty attitude named Mike Comrie. Hensick could have left early for the pros but chose to stay. His point total is probably one that won’t be reached again by a Wolverine in the modern era of early departures. And is being a glory hound always a bad thing? The hockey team these past few years have had no standouts who could create the magic Hensick could and be a threat every time he touched the puck. I wish we had another Hensick on the team.

Kevin Porter is another yes from me. I think the problem he faced his first three years is that he was a solid winger who was always overshadowed by the likes of Hensick, Andrew Cogliano, Johnson, etc… Porter had 24-34-58 his junior year (Hensick’s senior year). Any other year on any other team and you’re looking at a Hobey Baker finalist for putting up stats like that. Yet that campaign in his career is totally forgotten because everyone pretty much attributed those stats to playing alongside Hensick. Porter didn’t have the flash of Hensick. Maybe he didn’t have any highlight reel goals. But what he was, was consistently good at both ends of the ice, and his senior year, with Hensick gone, he went from good to great, proving he wasn’t just a product of Hensick. Porter scored 33 goals his senior year, a number the likes of Cammalleri, Hilbert, Tambellini, Comrie, Muckalt, and Morrison never accomplished in one season. And perhaps above all else, Porter and Chad Kolarik brought unity, leadership, and discipline to Michigan hockey once again after the two years of the JMFJ circus freak show that seemed to alienate some of the team as not feeling all inclusive on and off the ice. To me, all seemed right again with Porter captaining the ship, and the Hobey Baker Award capped it off.

Carl Hagelin, I’m sorry to say, I can’t do it the first time around, either. Amazing his junior and senior years. Off the chart speed and work ethic at both ends of the ice, like Jed Ortmeyer only with skill. But offensively, Hagelin always lacked that ability to be a major scoring threat, that something special that Hensick possessed. He never had a 20 goal season and never elevated his offense to elite status like we were all waiting for. What he lacked there he made up everywhere else, but it’s not enough for me to vote yes for him on the initial ballot.

KILE, GAMBLERS GO FOR USHL TITLE
Michigan recruit Alex Kile is the lone commit still in action and this Saturday night he and the Green Bay Gamblers will face off against Waterloo in Game 1 of the USHL Clark Cup Final. The championship is decided in a best of five series.

Kile has seen action in all seven post-season games and has three goals and two assists along with a +5 rating. His five playoff points is tied for sixth on the Gamblers.

The Gamblers finished the regular season with the USHL’s top record at 47-9-4 to earn the Anderson Cup. After a first round bye, they dispatched Youngstown 3-1 in a best of five series, then swept Indiana in three games. This is their third consecutive appearance in the Clark Cup Final. Green Bay took the regular season series over Waterloo, 3-1, though the Black Hawks won their last meeting, 5-3, on April 7 in Green Bay.

TROUBA AFFIRMS DECISION
Highly touted defensive commitment Jacob Trouba was a guest on NHL Live a few days ago. You can watch the whole interview below.

During the interview he was asked about his commitment to Michigan and whether he’s still planning on heading to Ann Arbor or going to look at his options. Trouba without hesitation said, “I’m committed to college and that’s where I’m going.” He added that he’s not going to go back on his commitment because that’s not how he was raised and not the right thing to do. Gotta love it!

The University of Michigan hockey team is trying to become the University of Oregon football team of the college hockey world as they released five jersey designs for the 2012-13 season. Let us now look at Jersey Monstrosity: 2012 Edition.

The home jersey that sparked JERSEY OUTRAGE!!!!! last season due to the goofy gimmicky use of the block ‘M’ in Michigan naturally stays the same, of course! I hated this jersey design then and I still hate it now. Get rid of the block ‘M’ in Michigan, please!

But wait, there’s more. Presenting the new road jerseys…

Look familiar? It should. It’s the road version of the home jersey, complete with gimmicky block ‘M’ in Michigan. Ugh. I remember the previous home white throwback jersey without the block ‘M’ that was universally loved and for the past few years everyone has wanted a road version of that jersey. Well, we almost got what we want, except once again they had to use the block ‘M’ in Michigan. Thanks for listening to fan feedback. Won’t be buying this one, either…

Moving right along, a favorite of mine returns. No, not the 90s script Michigan that I’m still hoping makes a comeback. I’m talking about this bad boy…

The throwback alternate jersey that was worn for The Big Chill at the Big House makes its return. Okay, there’s goofy bad that shouldn’t be done and there’s goofy bad that should and to me this always fell in the latter category.

There was an old Michigan hockey jersey from like the 1950s that had that Wolverine mascot on the front that was always a favorite of some of us because of how goofy it looked and no one ever thought would ever be recreated. Then the jersey ended up being the throwback worn for The Big Chill. I couldn’t believe they did it (but in an awesome way).

I don’t have a problem with them using this for one season mainly because I don’t expect to see the maize jerseys busted out very often. And this time I might buy one because it won’t have the stupid Arby’s logo on it.

The Great Lakes Invitational is where they traditionally bust out some throwback jersey and these have a traditional block ‘M’ only on the front, too. I can dig that. But our helmets have no wings. I suppose it’s to go with the plain look. Just odd to see.

“We wanted to pay tribute to the great tradition of our hockey program by redesigning our jerseys to honor teams of the past,” said head coach Red Berenson.

“This season’s uniforms will recognize the heritage and success of the Michigan hockey program,” said Dave Brandon, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. “We hope that our fans enjoy the retro designs as much as the current and former players.”

MGoBlue posted the jerseys on Facebook and judging by the feedback most dislike the use of the block ‘M’ in Michigan. And one guy is really, really adamant in believing that Michigan has always used the block ‘M’ at the start of MICHIGAN across the road jerseys for the past 30 years (save the years of the plain block ‘M’ jersey). Uh, okay, you keep believing that.

I’m gonna file this one under The Brandoning.
