A walk into Montreal's public markets

Montreal in the Summer is an awesome place to be. From the many festivals that bring our city to life, to the outdoor activities that give us the opportunity to take advantage of our green spaces; Montreal transforms itself into a desirable island with an infinite list of activities to make our days brighter. One of my favourite things to do during the warm months is to explore our public food markets.

Montreal is home to four public markets; Jean-Talon, Atwater, Maisonneuve, Lachine. Each is strategically located in a different area of the island. There are also 11 neighborhood markets and flower kiosks that are open to the public throughout the city.

Aleks Schürmer on holograms, baroque music, and partying like it's 1699

One of the most interesting, bizarre, and wonderful things cooking in Montreal right now is Le Pop D'Epoque, a digital baroque opera featuring a few of montreal's biggest artists. Promising everything from holograms to 18th-century period instruments, this should truly be a unique performance - the world's first digital baroque opera.

Recently I spoke with artistic director Aleks Schürmer about the project, its indiegogo funding campaign, and what we can expect when it debuts on June 22nd.

Jon Cohen talks the founding, life and future of the One Man Band Festival

It takes a special vision and a lot of drive to start a new festival in Montreal's extremely saturated market. That's exactly what Jon Cohen had when he held the first One Man Band Festival last year. Inspired by his own life experiences trying to tour with a band and then alone, and noting meteoric rise of solo artists from Owen Pallett to Grimes, it seemed like the right time to take a risk and try something new. The second instalment of the festival is next weekend and features artists like Montag, Danny Lutz, Jenn Mireau, Ira Lee, Elgin Skye, and Cohen's own Jon Cohen Experimental.
