Photo Essay: Opening day at the 10th Edition of Piknic Electronik

An estimated crowd of 8500 were out enjoying the beautiful 30-degree weather and dancing to the sounds of the Art Department, the Rose Crew and other DJ sets. The organizers at Piknic have put together a great lineup for this season, which continues every Sunday until September 30th. Check out a few of our photos from opening day...

It featured many of Montreal's DJ community with the likes of DJ Brace, Camereo, Capitaine Soldat, and Wilcox & Promise. We raised nearly $1000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Here's a selection of photos from the benefit:

Montreal Sketch Fest at Theatre Ste-Catherine, until Saturday

A video like this one does a better job of getting bums in chairs at Montreal's upcoming Sketch Comedy Fest at Theatre Ste-Catherine. Stuff this video almost teaches you: 1. What a juicy stinger is 2. How to milk a delicious awkward silence 3. How to annoy French comfort food 4. How to steal lights from Centaur Theatre. All are clearly essential life skills.

The Midnight Poutine Podcast - May 23 - 28, 2012

Temperatures are rising around the city, literally and metaphorically. Controversial legislation (and questionable government and police behaviour) has driven thousands to the streets to lend their voices to the 100+ day long protest. As the mercury climbs, the student strikes show no signs of cooling. We're not sure whether the music on this week's show will soothe the savage beast or fan the flames of revolution, but we're sending it out there for your consideration, whatever side of the debate you're on.

The crowd in red started over at the Quartier des Spectacles and were supposed to head east on Sherbrooke street toward Lafontaine park. Instead they moved west to downtown and then travelled east on Rene Levesque all the way to Berri. The supporters reached Lafontaine park and staged an umbrella rally as it started to rain. The demonstration continued into the evening as marchers and supporters were chanting and hitting pots and pans throughout the city. In case you missed it, here are a few photos of yesterday's protest.

Call & Response: PARLOVR

It's an exciting week for Montréal band, PARLOVR, who have a release party for their second LP Kook Soul this Thursday at Jackie and Judy, and then are the subject of a Polaris Record Salon at Casa del Popolo on Saturday. Band members (from left to right) Alex, Jeremy and Louis seem to be taking it all in stride, or at least that's the impression they gave during an informal interview with MP at their practice space in Rosemont. Jeremy and Louis warmed us up, while Alex, who Jeremy described as the Holden Caulfield of the group ("He's allergic to phonies"), kept mostly silent, eating fruit and setting up for practice. Despite an attempt to sabotage the interview by offering a faulty stool, the band gave some insight on their new album, waxed nostalgic about drunken antics in Dubai, run-ins with a Nazi bouncer, and espoused their views on how they'd like to cover Montréal in tons of spaghetti.

Grumman '78: No wheels at the Faubourg

Last summer, <a href="http://www.grumman78.com""target_blank">Grumman '78 skyrocketed to fame, its overwhelming success a play on Montreal's lack of street food. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I might have to slap you across the face with one of their not-Mexican-but-Mexican-inspired tacos and throw you under the truck it came from. But as the sunny days faded, so did the <a href="http://www.grumman78.com""target_blank">Grumman '78 craze. Yes, they appeared at a few winter events and held the occasional taco party at headquarters, but frankly, they dropped from my radar when the season put a strain on chowing down tacos street side.

But now, there's no need to wait on the weather. Or chase after the truck for that matter. <a href="http://www.grumman78.com""target_blank">Grumman '78 recently opened a permanent stand in the food court of the Faubourg. That means tacos all year round, at functioning hours of the day, in one very convenient location.

What's New Chez Vous, Jon Cohen? (Hint: It's The One Wo/Man Band Festival!)

Jon Cohen is soft-spoken, but unrestrained when it comes to enthusiasm for the work itself, the people that inspire, the community. That small lovely electric light is no doubt part of the contribution he's made (you know, aside from the music he's played) in bands like The Dears and The Social Register; in his own successful solo project; and now in the flourishing of his festival: a celebration of that small lonely light that graces a stage in the body of the One Wo/Man Band...

"My name is Jon Cohen, of the Jon Cohen Experimental. I'm the founder & artistic director for the one-man band festival (18th to 20th of May 2012), an original new music festival in its maiden year here in Montreal, which celebrates and showcases exclusively, the talents and creativity of one man/ one woman bands from all over the world. I started out as a musician in a band and gradually moved into a one man band format which has allowed me to make a living touring the world and now I want to bring this unique phenomenon into one big amazing music fest exclusive to the solo performer."

Less Than a Semi-Charmed Kind of Life

Une Vie Inutile is Simon Paquet's second novel published at one of my favourite small presses, Héliotrope. Unlike the life of the main character implied by the book's title, it is far from being a useless read. I'm going to urge all of you French-reading bros and babes to get interested in some local franco literature because the voice of the main character, Normand, is everything that is great about so much francophone Québécois writing. He is cynical, self-deprecating, with a tar-black sense of humour and just the appropriate pinch of suicidal tendencies.

This long weekend alone there's Montreal's punk focused Pouzzafest, the start of Piknic Electronik's 10th season and a brand new fest to add to the mix: The One Man Band Fest. The organizer of this last one, Jon Cohen, joins us this week as guest host to tell us about the 3 day affair of shows, workshops and more useful events for solo artists. And, lest we forget, there's also our own Midnight Poutine event going down: a Beastie Boys themed dance party tribute in honour of MCA (R.I.P. Adam Yauch). It's got a great line-up of DJs, it's co-organized by the always awesome Pop Montreal and all door proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
