It's almost Valentine's Day, so we send you our love with another dose of glorious podcast poutine to temper your frigid February. Like last week's episode, we check in on the Nuits D'Afrique and Fade to Black shows happening as part of Black History Month and we see who's in the next round of preliminaries for Les Francouvertes. We're also happy to send special anniversary wishes to Noah Bick and the whole crew at Passovah Productions; the local promotion outfit is celebrating their 4th year of putting on killer quality shows with a suitably killer showcase at Il Motore.

No sooner did Igloofest leave us high and dry (multiple puns intended) than other festivals and events have rushed in to fill the void. This week marks the kick off of Black History Month and some great shows courtesy of Nuits D'Afrique and Fade to Black. It's also the start of Les Francouvertes, the annual battle of the bands that puts some of this city's greatest francophone acts in tête-à-tête competition. In the end, musical awesomeness usually wins. Oh, there's also Chicago and Megadeth in town (we do not believe that is a battle of the bands, though it clearly it should be).

January is ending in a winter heat wave, the melting snow an apt metaphor for the final weekend Igloofest. Before we watch the city's great outdoor party drip away for another year, we thought we'd play a few more tunes from artists playing down in the old port this weekend. We've also got music from MTL-based artists like Daniel Isaiah, NYCE and Sean Nicholas Savage as well as our usual healthy dose of inane chatter.

While we should be going dark today to protest the wrong-headed and detrimental "Stop Online Piracy Act", we're not sure our tiny slice of internet readership would draw enough attention. Although the legislation is U.S.-based and is currently in the process of making its way through congress, it has significant repercussions for the internet, globally. If the bill passes in its current form, sites that rely on user-generated content like Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, (and potentially even good ol' Midnight Poutine) could be held liable if infringing content is found on their sites. Although we spend most of today's podcast talking about Igloofest and other great shows happening around town, we wanted to give a shout out to sites that are raising awareness about SOPA.

Hey hey. The Midnight Poutine Podcast is finally back from the holidays. It took a week or and a bit, but we're now officially ready for 2012. We hope you all had great holidays and that you're set for another great year of messy musical discovery, poutine-style. Temperatures are dropping, but shows are slowly starting to pick back up. And it wouldn't be January without Montreal's coldest music festival: the unparalleled 3-weekend long snowsuit-filled electronic/DJ/club party that is Igloofest (e.g piknic's frozen twin).

Here we go folks. The last podcast of 2011. We're sad to be heading off-air for a few weeks but looking forward to catching up on our favourite tunes of the year during holiday downtime. This episode is a fairly unprecedented seasonal sign-off, at least as far as this usually humbug podcast is concerned: we've got 3 holiday-themed songs, christmas cookies and a list of holiday shows for you to enjoy. We're just as shocked as you to learn that this week's episode of the Midnight Poutine podcast is the second last one of the year. It seems like just yesterday we were basking in the above seasonal temperatures of a mild November, and now we're seeing venues slowly finish off their 2011 shows. Don't check out for the holidays just yet though...Greg and I have plenty of suggestions to keep you busy during the last few weeks of the year.

Covered in a fresh blanket of fluffy white neige, the Midnight Poutine podcast digs itself out from the first real snowfall of the year. Although winter show-going presents many challenges - planned and unplanned prat falls from icy venue entranceways, mandatory overpriced coat checks, deciding between cool shoes or dorky winter boots - we encourage you to persevere and face these difficulties head on (or rather, touque on). While today's dump was a gentle nudge of what winter has in store, the forecast calls for a warmer weekend, so the snow will be a melting memory by the time you get out for the shows featured in today's podcast.

M for Montreal unleashes its 6th edition, M83 unravels his new epic double album at SAT, Youth Lagoon offers up some understated sonic beauty at Il Motore and Honheehonhee are finally ready to launch their debut album, Shouts, at Club Lambi on Friday. We are so unable to contain our excitement that this week's podcast runs almost an hour and a half.

After being sated with turkey and spoiled with a gorgeously sunny and warm long weekend, things are back to normal on this week's Midnight Poutine podcast. Well, as normal as things get 'round these parts. There are too many shows to talk about this week, including the launch of the Barr Brothers' brilliant debut album, the 3rd edition of the Montreal Ska Festival, and an experimental puppet and performing objects cabaret, but we do our best.
