Both fun and educational, Google Sky Map is like having a planetarium in your pocket.

This app uses your phone’s GPS, accelerometer, and compass to provide a guide for identifying and locating celestial objects. Navigating Sky Map isn’t complex. In automatic mode you just hold it in front of you and the screen orients to display a notated version of the sky in before you. In manual mode Sky Map let’s you pan across the sky by dragging your finger across the screen or your phone’s alternate pointing device (track ball etc.)

Sky Map is quite entertaining for the amateur astronomer. Looking for a particular star, planet or constellation? Type the name in search and the display reconfigures to point you to your target. It’s also interesting to use in the daytime to find out where the stars go when you can’t see them. Toggling to the thoughtful night mode helps preserve your night vision by switching to red against a black background.
