Jurassic Park is one of the biggest movie franchises in film history… and not just because there’s a T-Rex in the mix.

Universal was going to go ahead with a fourth sequel to the dino adventure piggybacking on the release of Jurassic Park in 3d.

Now, it looks like those plans are on hold. Universal has stopped production on Jurassic Park 4 and Sam Neil weighed in on it.

Sam Neil starred in part one and three, recently said that the new film is going to be “a big reboot of the franchise.”

Does this mean that they are going to redo the original which is a stupid idea or are against doing a direct sequel. It’s very interesting to me though. I hated the third one, so seeing what happens with this one is really interesting.

There are times when I say, “Enough is enough! I’m not going to take on any new TV shows!” (I know, way to put a stake in the ground, right?) The thing is, the DVR guilt already hovers around DEFCON 2, so getting hooked on any new shows just seems overwhelming.

And then something like “New Girl” comes along and I remember how dumb I’m being for pretending I don’t love watching TV and immediately allow myself to get hooked and fall in love with the wacky crew in the hip L.A. loft.

It’s one of those shows guaranteed to make me laugh out loud every episode. So when I learned the entire cast was going to attend a recent screening and Q&A, I knew I wanted to try my luck and see if I could meet a few of them.

It didn’t seem like a lot of the usual suspects (i.e. collectors, graphers, etc.) knew about this event, as it wasn’t widely publicized. When I arrive, Billy Beer is already on the scene, deeply embroiled in a game of Candy Crush Saga. He apologizes for being rude — a first for him.

Just when I think the afternoon is going to drag until arrivals, two girls, who clearly will be attending the event, begin shrieking/wailing/annoying because of the imminent venom they narrowly escaped by a deadly…lady bug. Yup, a lady bug. It’s been a few days, but trust me: that image is still highly annoying.

The venue is new to me and Billy and the others, including birthday-boy Ace, aren’t jazzed by the set up. We keep hope alive though and ultimately, we’re asked to move from the center platform in the circle drive to the far sidewalk (just as the group predicted). In orderly fashion — there’s maybe 10 of us — we line up on the sidewalk and wait. The fan line is already wrapped around the building and press row has filled in across the lot from us. Now we just wait for the cast. I have heard for some time about how nice and friendly the three men are, but that Zooey Deschanel and Hannah Simone are a bit tougher to get. That doesn’t mean they’re not friendly, just not as apt to cross over and sign autographs/pose for pictures. I don’t care who comes over — I’m just excited to see them up close!

First to arrive is Lamorne Morris, who plays Winston. He gets out of the car, and our little assembly calls for him.

The security guy says something like, “You don’t want to sign, do you?” Lamorne disregards and heads straight over to us.

Yeah! He signs for the entire group, whatever each person wants and takes photos as well. He was adorable.

Now I honestly don’t remember if it was Hannah or Jake Johnson who showed up next, but here’s all you need to know: Hannah said she would come over after she did the press row (she didn’t) and Jake came right over to us.

Again: Yeah! And just like Lamorne, he signed whatever people asked him

(Billy got two cast pieces finished with his autograph!) and took photos. Such a nice guy.

Now Zooey’s car pulls up. And then takes off. Literally. That’s what happened. The car pulled up, paused for less than 20 seconds and then drove off — around the building and to a side entrance that would take her straight on to press row. Oooookay, I guess that means she’s not coming over to us.

Then, finally, there’s Max Greenfield. At first we think we’re foiled because his car pulls up along the far side, almost where Zooey was ultimately dropped off. Our waiting army starts jogging across the lot to his car but security stops us and says he will come over to where we were. So we all file back and line up like good soldiers. Just like the other two guys, Max immediately comes over, signs and poses for pics. Truly, all three guys were so nice.

I scored three pics and I couldn’t have been happier. I decided to head home and not wait for exits. I heard some people stayed and were able to get Zooey and Hannah as they were leaving. But for my first “New Girl” experience, I was highly pleased and happy for a calm evening of order (sans barricades, no less) and three fun photos with stars from one of my new favorite shows.

It’s Written Revelry time! I have to tell you, this is the most wonderful exploration of Geek culture and fandom in general. And I have to tell you, it’s pretty on point! I mean being a geek is so accepted now, plus there are different levels of geekdom that one can be in. Personally, I’ve never dressed up… Okay fine, I was Angel for Halloween… For three years in a row, but other than that no cosplay for me.

On a day-to-day basis I would say I’m surrounded by all things geeky, nerdy and fandom inspired. I mean I blog for Mikethefanboy, I work at an internet site that has a ginormous amount of fan fiction, fan art, cosplay, etc. I follow well-known geektastic sites on Twitter. And none of this takes in consideration the massive amounts of fan related conversations I have per day with my coworkers and friends. I eat, live and breathe it.

In case you don’t know Her Universe and other sites that are similar have declared 2013 the “Year of the Fangirl” which I think is a-may-zing. So I’m always on the lookout for things related to that. Today, a coworker sent me a link to a Youtube video where these three young women are talking about how they got started in cosplay and how massive their fandom is (yes, cosplayers have fans…wild right?). I was enjoying it when two things that were said hit me : One girl talked about how they refer to people who don’t dress up at Cons as “mundanes” and another talked about how much negativity she can get from fans if her costume isn’t just right or if the fans feel she’s just riding the coattails of popularity and not because she eats, sleeps and breaths that fandom.

At the end of the video they talk about how they’re so happy that this is a great time for cosplay because it helps all those kids out there who are awkward like these girls were feel like they belong.

But do they?

Not to rain on this feel good parade, but in my experience fandoms can be some of the most judgmental and elitist groups out there. I’m guilty of it.

For instance, I do not count people who like “True Blood” as being real fans because I’ve been reading the books they’re based on since they came out and the show is nothing like the books. Or the fandom that’s grown up around the BBC Sherlock and it’s many, many, many offshoots (curse you tumblr!). I tolerate them, but they’re not real fans like me since I’ve been reading the stories from the time I was 13 and have seen nearly every movie, tv show or play about the characters. I also own, in addition to several versions of the original Canon, countless books that are based on, about, feature, or even hint at the famous detective. I even have a board game. And that’s just those two fandoms. I have many more.

Get any comic book fan started on their favorite comic or graphic novel then mention the film version, and just stand back and watch the fireworks. Or the reboot of an entire comic series, I mean how many versions of Batman do we need? How many AU’s do the X-Men seriously have to live in?

(Editor’s Note: The only AU that erase’s The Last Stand forever from my mind! M-)

OH! How about the kerfuffle when J.J. Abrams was announced as the director for the next Star Wars films. BUT WAIT… he’s directing the Star Trek reboot…HOW CAN HE DO BOTH?!?!?! Star Wars and Star Trek are like the Ghostbuster proton packs – you cannot cross the streams!

Next time you’re at a convention ask someone who’s in costume who they are or what their character is from and just see the reaction. They may answer you politely enough, but there will be an air of condescension to it especially if it’s a really popular anime. I don’t mean to pick on the anime cosplayers, but I’m speaking from experience here.

So what we really mean is: I WANT YOU FOR MY FANDOM! So long as I feel you’re a “real” fan.

But what constitutes a real fan?

Why is someone who only watches “True Blood” less of a fan than me who’s only read the books? Ok, I did watch the first season, but I’m sorry and no offense to Alexander Skarsgard, he is not Erik and that killed it for me. Why am I a bigger Sherlock Holmes fan just because I’ve been alive longer and own a Sherlock Holmes nutcracker? No I’m not lying, And there are Sherlock societies out there who would scoff at me and claim me not to be a true fan because I don’t read the original stories all the way through every year.

Why can’t I love both Star Trek and Star Wars? Why do I have to choose? And can I call myself a Trekkie if I don’t speak Klingon? What if I don’t own a lightsaber? Can I still say I’m a Star Wars nerd?

Why is your fandom better than mine or vice versa?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying everyone who is part of a fandom is an a**hole but I’d say it’s a good 80% when they are in groups. Individually it’s usually 15%. Ah, the mentality of the masses. And again, I’m not exempting myself I’m just as bad.

It’s like we want new recruits and acceptance so badly, but at the same time we want to protect our territory and like being “in the know” while judging those who aren’t. It makes us feel special, and if too many people know about it then we aren’t special anymore. There’s always been a certain level of pride in being a nerd or geeking out over something no one else knows about.

However with things like Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. our fandom can now reach millions and those millions believe they own the fandom. It’s crazy!

How am I supposed to keep up when my fandoms are always changing and adding in things? How can I possibly keep myself plugged in? How can I choose? Do I follow Redpants, Smauglock, or Otterbatch? Although I personally would like to propose SherKhan ;P

Do I only wear brown for my Steampunk? Do I cosplay Steampunk Star Wars? Steampunk Disney Villians? Steampunk monster hunters? What about Lady Mechanicka?

Do I cosplay Assassins Creed or Bioshock Inifinte? Can I still do the Legend of Zelda? What about Game of Thrones? Do I cosplay the books or the show?

AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s hard work to be an accepted geek. You have to basically plug into the Matrix and forget the real world. If you can’t name drop then you’re nothing. If you don’t follow a certain website or “expert” then you’re not really one of us. If aren’t aware of how your fandom changed 5 seconds ago, then how can you call yourself a real fan? Forget you’re # and you are in some serious trouble because then no one will know you’re out there.

I’m half terrified of this strange new rise of the geek and thrilled at the same time. I guess you just have to figure out how best to navigate it and keep your head down, because even amongst ourselves we can’t get along. This is no longer a tribe for those who don’t fit in, it’s a massive culture of assimilation to the “norm” that your fandom chooses.

But I’m still taking the blue pill and jumping head first down this rabbit hole.

Excuse me now, I have to go drink some Sherlock fan tea while tweeting about the latest New Adult novel a la Fifty Shades while Facebooking about how many times I’ve seen Iron Man 3 and planning out my Steampunk costumes for Comic Con 2013.

I should probably do my actual job in there at some point but who has the time? My geek cred it at stake!

Welcome back to Billy Beer’s Barstool. Now as Mike has mentioned a few 
too many times, I have a little bit of a singing background.

(Editor’s Note: Me? Would I have said that? M-)

So when I heard Adam Levine from the Voice was going to be out, Maybe I wanted 
to make sure he was going to be able to hear and see me. Maybe he’ll 
pick me to be on his team next season. Maybe Karalee will get a 
picture with this sexy beast! Maybe he’ll come over and sign about 100 
pictures people have of a model grabbing his crotch from behind while 
he’s naked. OR, maybe I don’t really care cause I’m really there for 
the lovely Alice Eve!

Karalee and Scotty get there a little bit before me today and were 
nice enough to hold a spot down for me. I think we’re all in it for 
the long haul today, cause it’s starting to get close to taping time 
and neither guest has arrived yet. Finally the door opens and it’s 
Adam. At this moment I am unable to hear due to the high pitch noises 
coming out of all the female voices around me. Adam looks over and 
waves.

I really wasn’t expecting him to do it, but it would have filtered 
out half of the crowd if he did. After the disappointment of Adam 
walking in, we all put our stuff down. When we look back up, there’s a 
blonde walking in too. CRAP! I think we just missed Alice on her way 
in too, and nobody said a thing. Someone finally yells to the guard, 
and affirms it was her. Grrrrrr! Time for the waiting game.

Montage! (Karalee bought some pretzels which I split with her, ruining 
my diet! But they were soooo good)

Wow, they are sure taking their time to come out. During the montage, 
even more people started showing up. I can’t believe how many people 
there are. We discuss the fact that there have been Oscar award 
winners here with a tenth of the crowd that is here right now. This is 
just stupid! I guess girls love their male singers that sound like 
girls.

Finally Adam makes his way out. ADAM! ADAM! ADAM! Adam! Adam Adam adam 
adam a-dumb! BOOOOOOO! All we get is the lamest waves you have ever 
seen. Yes, that is what all these people have been waiting hours for, 
is for you to wave at them. They will cherish that moment forever. I’m 
going to change my facebook status to “Adam Levine waved at me and 99 
other people!”

Well at least now everyone will leave…..NOPE! Really! All you people 
have stuff for Alice too? AGH! I can see the disappointment in 
Karalee, but she sticks around to help me out. I’ve got a combo shot 
with Chris Pine that I’m trying to get finish, a combo shot with ME 
that I want to get done, and an 8 x 10 of her from Star Trek.

Here comes a blonde walking out. ALICE! ALICE! She stops and looks 
like she’s asking people if she should do it. Finally, she heads on 
over. YAY! She starts signing and taking pictures with people.

  After about 10 people, her people start realizing this is going to 
take forever if she keeps doing that. So 2 people before us they 
announce no more pictures with, she will only be signing. I’ve learned 
that means nothing. She signs my combo shot then sees my picture with 
her. She’s like “Oh, that was the other day”

I then ask for a picture 
and she poses really quick. Karalee was nice enough to take the pic 
for me.

DONE! It’s funny to listen to her the rest of the way. She’s very 
witty and very funny! On her way back, Scotty is asking her for a pic, 
but she walks past. Luckily he’s able to run around and get her as 
she’s driving out.

Well, I guess I’m not going to be on The Voice next season, but I did 
get to see the lovely Ms. Eve again. And for that Success! Till next 
time!

Warner Brothers has just released three new character posters for Man of Steel, the new Superman saga. They look pretty damn awesome. I have to tell you, I was more than a tad skeptical of the new Zack Snyder movie but the more and more that I see it’s looking pretty damn good!
