People from New Zealand travelling to England to retrace their family tree and understand their roots a bit better is a common thing to do, but last year I was in the uncommon situation of travelling to New Zealand to try to discover the roots of my Mauri background.

To look at me you would think that all of my ancestors were Caucasians, but that is not actually the case. There is some suggestion that one of my relatives on my fathers side was a Mauri. Unfortunately the trip did not enlighten me, but it did introduce me to the beautiful country of New Zealand.

I had been determined to find out about the place and I had managed to find some very cheap Christchurch flights online which made it possible for me to head over, if only for a week. Christchurch is a beautiful town and is full of wonderful people. Lots of people often say that the New Zealanders are some of the friendliest people on the planet, but I think you actually have to go there to understand just how nice and welcoming they are.

My week over there was full of great sites and great fun. I began to understand why people described it as a more beautiful version of England. The place was like England, but on a smaller scale. Everything seemed cleaner and brighter, and the scenery was stunning. I wish that I had been able to find out more about my heritage, but the fact that I didn’t just gives me an excuse to go over there again next year!
