Keep reading for a chance to win a product worth $135 value!!

LEGO® Education BuildToExpress is more than a new product, it is a teaching process that can be built on over and over again. Hence the name build to express. The core set contains a variety of LEGO pieces, 200 in all, that range from minifigures to tools to bricks to wheels. Everything a kid would need to really spark his imagination. Each piece can easily be turned into something else with a little creativity. That is what this set is designed to do.

How it Works

1. There are 2 components to the set, the core set which comes with the actual LEGO pieces in a small tub, and the teacher’s guide, which contains instructions, lessons, a CD, and challenge cards.

2. The challenge cards are the backbone of the set. Each build, or topic, consists of 4 cards: Think About It; Remember; Imagine; and Conclude. Each of the 4 cards asks the child to build a small model using the pieces in the tub. Card #1 helps the child establish their general views about the topic, card #2 asks the child to remember back to similar experiences and build a new model, card #3 instructs the child to use their imagination on a related build, and card #4 encourages the child to sum up their conclusions or what he has learned with another new build.

3. The challenge cards enable you as a parent or teacher to open up a dialog with your child so that they can better understand what they are building and why, as well as their emotions behind the build. In addition to the 29 sets of printable cards, there is a challenge card creator that lets you implement your own topics and ideas.

The scene above was created by my son for the Story Character Challenge. He chose King Arthur and His Knights. The scene depicts King Arthur and the sorceress Morgan le Fay.

“In just a quick 20-minute brainstorming, I can fit a LEGO® build to any standard and usually it ends up being cross-curricular. I had a build about a poem, and you would think that is a literacy standard, but it also became a social studies standard, a little bit of a history lesson. So it kind of naturally branches out for you and hits the cross-curriculum.” - Andrew Charland, 5th grade teacher, quoted from LEGO Education

Above is my son’s scene from Letter to the President Challenge Card. This one really made me laugh. That is my son on the right, talking on the phone to the president, who is on the left and looks more like Abraham Lincoln because there was not a minifigure in the set that looked like our current president. Behind the president, who is holding a key, is a money vault with only $100 left in it. My son is telling the president that he needs to stop bankrupting our country! Smart kid, huh.

This is my son’s build to go along with the Mood of a Poem Challenge Card. The poem he chose is I Can’t/I Can by William Allen Butler

I Can’t is a sluggard, too lazy to work;
From duty he shrinks, every task he will shirk;
No bread on his board, and no meal in his bag,
His house is a ruin, his coat is a rag.

I Can is a worker; he tills the borad fields,
And digs from the earth all the wealth that it yields;
The hum of his spindles begins with the light,
And the fires of his forges are blazing all night.

On the left is the I Can’t sluggard who is sitting in his chair, in rags, surrounded by trash and a weird skeleton in a bush. The I Can worker is on the right, sweeping up his property, with a toasty fire going, food and drink on the table, and a garden growing.

I love mugs. My 2 favorite mugs are an oversized Winnie the Pooh mug and a Star Trek transporter mug that “magically” transports the crew members when you pour in a hot liquid. When I bought my Silhouette CAMEO, one of the first things I did was run out to Old Time Pottery and stock up on mugs and glassware.

This mug belongs to my son. It is his word-of-the-day mug. It is a delicious way to introduce new vocabulary words! The little book is cut from black vinyl. Did you know that vinyl is very similar to a chalkboard. It actually wipes off cleaner than a chalkboard!

That above is my name in Greek. I took a picture of the black piece of paper after I removed the letters, because I wanted you to see an up-close picture of how crisp and clean the CAMEO cuts.

Here are the punched out letters. We have made dozens of Greek letters in all different sizes and colors. This has not only helped us learn the actual letters, but we create fun games with them like spelling entire sentences, and recreating English words in Greek to see if we can pronounce them. Since we are deep into studying ancient Greece right now, we also use these letters to memorize the spelling of famous figures in ancient Greece.

You can also do all that I mentioned above with any language, such as Egyptian hieroglyphs. That was a ton of fun! I am sure you can imagine the myriad of activities you can do with a set of sturdy cardstock hieroglyphs.

I LOVE maps. I think this stems from the genealogist in me. Township, city, county, state, country maps…they all fascinate me. I look at a map and start to wonder about the deep history of the land, how it once looked, and why the original settlers chose to live in the exact spots they settled in. The United Kingdom especially fascinates me, primarily because most of my heritage is Irish, Scottish and English. When I started to teach my son all about our heritage, we had to un-jumble several terms that are often mixed up and bumbled about. You’ve probably heard all these: United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, the island of Ireland, the country of Ireland, Great Britain, British people, Scotland, Wales, British Isles, England…what??

Enter my handy Silhouette CAMEO, some vinyl and a sturdy piece of wood. First, some amazing facts about vinyl:

The CAMEO cuts through it like butter.

It is like a cheap whiteboard. You can write on it with dry erase markers and wipe it cleanly off with a magic eraser.

It sticks to wood beautifully, but also peels off easily in one piece when you are done with it.

I found a simple map of the British Isles, used my CAMEO to cut it out onto vinyl, and stuck it to a nice piece of wood. This became our dry erase map to study the land more in-depth.

Writing on maps over and over again is a real hands-on learning experience. The boundaries, capitals, rivers, major cities, historical battlefields, castle locations, and former kingdom divisions are fully drilled into our heads. No more confusion about what exactly the United Kingdom is!

The beauty of this project is that when we were done with this map, we simply peeled off the vinyl and stuck another vinyl cut-out on the wood! Yeah for upcycling wood!

In case, you are interested, this video really clears things up about what to call that historic and fascinating bunch of islands across the pond. Take a few minutes to watch it when you have the time. You will definitely learn a lot!

If you are not a very crafty person and do not subscribe to the popular craft blogs, like I do, you may have NO idea what a Silhouette CAMEO is or why I am dedicating an entire series to it. People, this machine is crazy. Crazy awesome, I mean. This machine is a die-cutter, with a teeny tiny blade that can make very intricate cuts in paper, vinyl and even fabric. Unlike other machines, this one does not require you to purchase cartridges, designs or fonts. You create your own images using their free software, connect the machine to your computer and hit cut!

It is not a cheap machine ($270 at Amazon) but in less than one year, mine easily paid for itself by saving us money on birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, and products that can easily become DIY if you have the right tools.

By DIY, I mean that I made my husband and son several etched glasses and mugs with the Star Trek emblem, the Ohio State logo, a LEGO minifigure, and even a Dalek and Tardis from Doctor Who.

I am always on the lookout for new ideas to give me an excuse to use this machine, however I’ve noticed that it is mostly used for designing and crafts, so I wanted to share my ideas for using this machine in your school or for educational projects.

So, welcome to day one: Educational Crafts with the Silhouette CAMEO

How many times have you wished you had some cut-outs of states or countries, like the ones above? These are made of cardstock and are very thick and sturdy. To give you an example of how intricately the Silhouette can cut, I included state abbreviations. Here is what the image looks like in the software before cutting…

Below you can see it just finished cutting Tennessee…

And here is a close up of the states before I separated them…

The Silhouette machine comes with a super sticky mat that holds the paper in place during the cutting. Below is a photo of the paper that was left after I pulled away each state and left behind the letters. I saved this on transfer paper because I am sure I can find a use for it in the future! It just looks too cool to throw away!

So, what would you do with these? Here are some ideas:

Create a matching game by either matching the name of the state or the capital to the cut-out.

Add some magnets and decorate your fridge.

Use them as puzzle pieces and see how fast you can put the country back together again.

If this were created without the abbreviations, you could have a game of guess the state by its shape.

Alphabetize the states by abbreviation.

Play along with the book or video for The Scrambled States of America.

“Outstanding … should be on every home educator’s reference bookshelf.” —Homeschooling Today. This educational bestseller has dominated its field for the last decade, sparking a homeschooling movement that has only continued to grow. It will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school. Two veteran home educators outline the classical pattern of education—the trivium—which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child’s mind. With this model, you will be able to instruct your child in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects. The Well-Trained Mind includes detailed book lists with complete ordering information; up-to-date listings of resources, publications, and Internet links; and useful contact information.

Classical education has seen an explosive rebirth in the past few years in the homeschool community. Experts shout for your attention with advice like “teach world history in four distinct units,” “learning Latin is mandatory,” and “finish the logic stage before moving on to the rhetoric stage.” You could easily spend weeks pouring over all the different requirements, curriculum, teaching resources, and interpretations out there…and you would feel overwhelmed with the burden of trying to comprehend and apply all that you learned. You only have a few years to shape your child’s heart and mind. With so much at stake and so little time, which way should you go? Diane Lockman has been through a similar journey, and she wants you to know that what she discovered was liberating. Classical education, if taught like it was for most of Western history, can be enormously fun and energizing! All you have to do is teach three skills to mastery (language, thought, and speech) while discussing meaningful ideas like truth, goodness, and beauty. Home school parents need practical instructions for turning the idea of a classical Christian home education into reality. Diane shows you exactly how to teach these three skills through 12 real-life case studies with children ranging in age from 5 to 13 years old. Using her “must-know” checklists, Diane develops customized strategic semester plans for each child, a to-do list for the parents, and a to-do list for the children. Use these personal “makeovers” as a guide to develop your own strategic plans.

Newspapers are filled with stories about poorly educated children, ineffective teachers, and cash-strapped school districts. In this greatly expanded treatment of a topic he first dealt with in Rediscovering the Lost Tools of Learning, Douglas Wilson proposes an alternative to government-operated school by advocating a return to classical Christian education with its discipline, hard work, and learning geared to child development stages. As an educator, Wilson is well-equipped to diagnose the cause of America’s deteriorating school system and to propose remedies for those committed to their children’s best interests in education. He maintains that education is essentially religious because it deals with the basic questions about life that require spiritual answers-reading and writing are simply the tools. Offering a review of classical education and the history of this movement, Wilson also reflects on his own involvement in the process of creating educational institutions that embrace that style of learning. He details elements needed in a useful curriculum, including a list of literary classics. Readers will see that classical education offers the best opportunity for academic achievement, character growth, and spiritual education, and that such quality cannot be duplicated in a religiously-neutral environment.

Bauer’s The Well-Trained Mind (which she co-wrote with Jessie Wise) taught parents how to educate kids; her latest is designed for adults seeking self-education in the classical tradition. Reading-sustained, disciplined and structured-is her core methodology, so she starts with tips on improving reading skills and setting up a reading schedule (start with half-hour sessions four mornings a week, with daily journal writing). Reading is a discipline, like meditating or running, she says, and it needs regular exercise. To grow through reading-to reach the “Great Conversation” of ideas-Bauer outlines the three stages of the classical tradition: first, read for facts; then evaluate them; finally, form your own opinions. After explaining the mechanics of each stage (e.g., what type of notes to take in the book itself, or in the journal), Bauer begins the list section of the book, with separate chapters for her five major genres: fiction, autobiography/memoir, history/politics, drama and poetry. She introduces each category with a concise discussion of its historical development and the major scholarly debates, clearly defining all important terms (e.g., postmodernism, metafiction). And then, the piece de resistance: lists, in chronological order, of some 30 major works in each genre, complete with advice on choosing the edition and a one-page synopsis. Bauer has crafted a timeless, intelligent book.

In the past, correct spelling, the multiplication tables, the names of the state capitals and the American presidents were basics that all children were taught in school. Today, many children graduate without this essential knowledge. Most curricula today follow a haphazard sampling of topics with a focus on political correctness instead of teaching students how to study. Leigh Bortins, a leading figure in the homeschooling community, is having none of it. She believes that there are core areas of knowledge that are essential to master. Without knowing the multiplication tables, children can’t advance to algebra. Without mastery of grammar, students will have difficulty expressing themselves. Without these essential building blocks of knowledge, students may remember information but they will never possess a broad and deep understanding of how the world works. In this book, Bortins gives parents the tools and methodology to implement a rigorous, thorough, and broad curriculum based on the classical model.

Is American education preparing the future leaders our nation needs, or merely struggling to teach basic literacy and job skills? Without leadership education, are we settling for an inadequate system that delivers educational, industrial, governmental and societal mediocrity? In A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-first Century, Oliver DeMille presents a new educational vision based on proven methods that really work! Teachers, students, parents, educators, legislators, leaders and everyone who cares about America’s future must read this compelling book.

How can you give your children the tools they need to teach themselves? Long ago students were first taught how to learn. Today, students are taught an encyclopedia of subjects trivia but they are not taught the basic skills of learning: to discover, to reason, and to apply. They are not taught the trivium. Can you homeschool in a classical style without compromising your Christian principles? Classical Education must be sifted through the critical screen of the Scriptures to be transformed into a Biblical model. Can you homeschool in a classical style without buckling under the burden? There is only so much time in the day. For every subject, and for every age, we have a workable plan which leaves you free to breathe. You can continue to use other approaches to homeschooling within the framework of classical education. Is homeschooling about renewing family vision? The family is at the heart of God s plan for restoring Christian culture. Homeschooling is not alternative education. Homeschooling was here first. We want to restore Biblical order to education.

With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers’ bestseller for 10 years! Thirty years in New York City’s public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto’s “guerrilla teaching.” John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. His other titles include A Different Kind of Teacher (Berkeley Hills Books, 2001) and The Underground History of American Education (Oxford Village Press, 2000).

The world’s problems can be summed up in just a few words: lack of leadership. While the world is in desperate need of leaders very few people have the tools to become one. Oliver and Rachel DeMille’s Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning is the manual that every person who aspires to be an effective leader, or to raise one, needs. Principled decision-making, the cultivation of character, studying the classics, and using critical thinking skills are just a few of the lost educational virtues of today restored by this book. An in-depth look at the philosophy and phases of education are indispensable when creating leaders. This book will help any family find the direction they are looking for when pursuing leadership education. This book teaches not only the theories behind Thomas Jefferson Education but also the practical application of these theories for you and your children. If we apply the philosophy contained in Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning then we will transform not only our families and our classrooms, but the world.

1. Unexpected peanut butter pancakes for breakfast. On a week day.

2. Waking up to realize there is cold pizza in the refrigerator.

3. When first thing in the morning I look him right in the eyes and say, “I challenge you to Mario Cart.” I have never won a single game, but he thoroughly loves beating me and it makes him so happy when I show interest in video games.

4. When I read aloud to him. I love to read to him and I hope he never grows out of it. I joke that when he is an adult, I’ll call him every day to read him a chapter in a story.

5. When I ask him to open a jar for me. He pretty much is as strong as me now.

6. When my husband sends me funny videos or interesting articles during the day and tells me to share it with him. It makes him happy to know that Dad thinks of him during the day.

7. When my husband unexpectedly comes home early.

8. Waking up and realizing we have absolutely nowhere to go that day.

9. A huge pile of pillows and blankets.

10. When I tell him it is a Netflix school morning and we watch nothing but documentaries all morning.
