MOP Day 25 – Saturday Challenge: Nonsense poem

I set today’s Saturday challenge for the Month of Poetry group I’m part of. Which meant I actually had to write one myself. Not doing so well on the poem a day thing this year but some is better than none!


Sir Herbert was a humble knight
Dutiful and true
His armour kept in mint condition 
Sword well sharpened too
He wasn’t one to curry favour
The king already knew

So when the kingdom faced perilla
Threat most dire they say
All sage advice agreed he was
The one to save the day
His majesty called out to Herbert
“Keep our fear at bay!”

Though Herbert was a cautious man
No fan of questing capers
His polished mace and well trained steed
Heartsease on him did favour 
And sally forth he did without
Succumbing to the vapours

The chilli morn and unnamed threat
Had poor Herb mired in dread
He thought himself an utter dill
He’d rather be in bed
As gingerly he broached the cave
In which it lay they said

The king called out as Herb crept in
“We’re running out of thyme!
The dragon’s seed is like to sprout
At twenty two to nine!”
And Herbert filled with horror thought 
Well isn’t that just fine

Through maize of tunnels Herbert wound
As onward minutes flew
Then suddenly a sight most feared
The seed was clove in two
And Herbert softly told himself 
My man, this day you’ll rue

But came a greeting from the shards
Unexpectedly contrarian
“I beg you not to smite me down
Let’s not be so barbarian”
The new born dragonette declared
“I’m strictly vegetarian”

MOP 2025 Day 2 – I don’t know how you do it

I don’t know how you do it

Smoke and mirrors
Don’t look too closely
Cracks become chasms
Everything crumbles

Blood minded determination
Any problem can be solved 
If enough energy is applied
Running on empty 

There isn’t any other option
One foot in front of the other
Keep moving forward 
Stumble and fall

How do I do it?
Frequently, I don’t

MOP 2025 Day 1 – Dispelling the Dark

Dispelling the Dark
(With apologies to Shel Silverstein)

I’m writing this poem
From inside my brain
And it’s been rather dark in here
So rhyme and rhythm don’t come easy
My inner voice unclear 
But lately there’s been glimpses
Of light and hope and cheer
And I write these refrains
From inside my brain
To chase away the fears

I wrote a thing

Sometimes 
I just get really
Really
Tired

Of people needing to 
Build themselves up
By sneering at others 
Passing judgment 
Finding fault
Belittling 
Over trivial things 

Of people tearing down
Instead of building up

And I feel weighed down
By the rubble 
Of petty destruction 

I want to take the broken pieces
Launch them high
Into the air
Make space to breathe deeply
Move freely 
Let loose song and dance and joy

And create something beautiful 
To dispel
The pain

MOP 2023 Day 12: In praise of freshly vacuumed carpet

I honestly didn’t think I was going to write anything today, but then inspiration struck! 

When the cat litter lives in the ensuite
And it’s been a few weeks
Since the cleaners were here
It can get to the point
Where it makes perfect sense
To break out the vacuum
And freak out the cats
Right when the household 
Is settling for bed
Because even
One
More
Minute
Of walking on that floor
Cannot
Be 
Endured

MOP 2023 Day 9

I’ve tried to find a poem
It should be somewhere here 
I’ve searched today and last night too
But without joy did fare
I’ve delved in all the usual places
Nothing loitered there

I’ve poked at lots of tender spots
Where bruises heal and fade
I’ve looked for mirth and whimsy
Even in the most mundane 
I’ve waited for my muse to come
She must have been delayed

I’ve asked the dog and cats for help
And puzzled over tea leaves
I’ve listened to the stormy wind
Carousing through the trees
I’ve rummaged through my memories 
Foraged in my dreams

I’ve toyed with many well worn words 
And phrases that won’t fit
I’ve felt the fleeting shape of verse
Smoke drift twist and shift
I’ve strewn my thoughts out on a page
Ah well, I guess that’s it!

I hear your sighing
Quiet aching

Put the kettle on to boil

I hear your footsteps 
Slow and dragging

Tea pot warming over flame

I see you standing
Lost, uncertain 

Scent of tea leaves fills the air

I see your anger
Fearful, hurting

Mugs, milk, sugar all are there

I can’t solve all things
Know no answers

Pot brewing steam twists rising

Come sit down with me
I’ll stay silent

Pour out tea and all your cares
