First of all, Fedora 17 is out today. Grab at https://fedoraproject.org/

A few months ago, I subscribed to the UK-native magazine Linux Format, which IMHO is so much better than US' Linux Journal. There is a lot more content, the articles are more technical and Linux relevant, and every issue comes with a DVD that includes more than 1 'live' Linux distribution.

So, far in 4 or 5 months since I started getting this magazine, I've had the chance to play around with Linux distributions like: Sabayon, Mint, Arch, CentOS, Ubuntu, Bodhi, OpenSuse, WattOS, Puppy, Scientific, Tails and TinyCore.

And although I've been around Linux since 1996, and I work for an Open Source company, I will confess that some of these distributions were entirely new to me. Also, I know that all of these distributions are available on the Internet, and can be downloaded and installed by anyone, and even though my Internet connection is fast, I never have the patience to search, download, burn Linux images... I use Fedora. And for me to try other things I basically have to get it at my doorsteps ready to run :-)

With all that in mind, tonight I created a KVM virtual machine with Fedora's virt-manager. The vm has 256 MB of RAM, and 200 MB of disk space. I then installed TinyCorePlus, which is 66 MB long ISO download, and once installed, it takes about 150 MB of disk space.

With networking working out of the box, I then used TinyCore's application installer, and installed Opera 12 (aka Next) beta version, and turned on Opera turbo feature.

So, at the end of the day, I was running a linux distribution on 256 MB of RAM, 200 MB of disk space and a cutting edge modern browser like Opera, which by the way, I truly hope it doesn't get sold to Facebook.

I don't own a mac anymore, but Matthew Garret's blog post is very good news to all of us who have spent hours getting Fedora running in macs in the past.
I hope it works out of the box for everyone!
Update - At least on Firefox 12 under Fedora 17 (beta) I started having some problems where the Firefox button stops responding and sometimes the pages stop rendering... Not sure if it is related to the Firefox 12 bug they describe on their site... I will try this plugin again when a new version is out.
I went ahead and volunteered to clean up after myself. After 'googling' around for the best way to get the file completely removed from the git history, I settled for these instructions: http://www.ducea.com/2012/02/07/howto-completely-remove-a-file-from-git-history/

The directions assume you are going to remove the file from your local .git clone, I actually removed it from remote git itself, which the only change I had to do was instead of applying the commands against .git, I ssh into the git remote host, and cd into the repo.git directory (whatever repo is), and apply the commands relative to the current directory.

A couple of precautions:

1. If you are not the only person pushing to that repo, give your teammates a heads up, and ask them to push all their changes before running the command.

2. Make a copy of the repo.git you are going to modify (aka backup), just in case ;-)
As a follow up to my last blog post, mccun934 informed me via twitter last night about an application called darktable that is available in Fedora 17. So, I decided to isntall it and play around with it a bit... Wow! Just Wow! This application is very nice. The best way to describe it, in the words of mccun934: "sort of a FOSS Lightroom clone" and it really is.

Below are a couple of screenshots of darktable on Fedora 17 (beta):

The indexing of the images seemed quite a bit faster than other applications I've tried before, and I really like the "collect images" section where I can filter (aka search) for images. darktable's layout is much more friendly to GNOME 3's full screen mentality, and its plugins make the application pretty flexible when it comes to editing photos.

darktable allows you to modify a photo, export it to Flickr, Picasa Web Albums or your disk.

darktable uses gphoto2 support for 'Tethered shooting' which is a terminology I wasn't familiar with in photography. It is basically connecting a camera to your computer and using the computer to take photos. See the video below to find a bit more about it.

Even though I have only played with darktable for a little less than 1 hour, I have to confess I am very impressed with this application, and I thank Mike for bringing it up to my attention.

PS - On their site you can also find an experimental build of darktable for Mac OS X.

With Fedora 17 release approaching, I started looking over some of my old posts and thought I'd write a quick follow up to my 'Linux and photography' series. Here are a few of my previous posts that may still be relevant under Fedora 17:

Back in 2011, I started a new experiment with my photography hobby. The experiment was simplicity. I decided to sell my Canon Ti1, close my Flickr account and pretty much live out my hobby only with my iPhone 4s. I know it sounds crazy, and it probably is, but honestly I was getting fed up with all the gears, expenses, and the time I was spending with photography in general... But, don't get me wrong, I still love the art of photography, and even though I am no professional not even a trained amateur, I believe a lot of great photos happen in one's mind before it is actually captured by a lens.

A few weeks ago I picked up this affordable lens kit for my iPhone, and I have been reasonably happy with my photos, it has been really fun trying to come up with creative photos with such a limited set of tools (and much cheaper too) :-)

Picasa 3.8 running on Wine on Fedora 17 (beta)

This week Google announced it is no longer supporting Picasa for Linux, which is sort of funny to me, because it feels like Picasa for Linux has been dead for at least a couple of years now. I have been using the native Windows Picasa binaries with Wine for at least that long.

There is a known issue and workaround for Google+ (Picasa Albums) authentication on the latest version of Picasa for Windows (v. 3.9).

I mostly only care about Google Picasa to back up my Picasa Albums, so instead of trying the fix above, which at least when I tried with Fedora 17 (beta) it was a bit painful... I just grabbed Picasa 3.8, which has built-in authentication with Picasa Album to do the 'needful'.

Shotwell 0.12.2 on Fedora 17 (beta)

Fedora has been packaging Shotwell as its default photo manager application since version 13, and even though the application has made quite a bit of progress over the years, IMHO, it still a bit quirky to use. I am not a huge fan of its editing/touch up capabilities, but I do like its built-in flexibility to publish photos directly to: Facebook, Flickr, Picasa Albums, Piwigo. As a side note, the iPhone works really well with Shotwell too.

Digikam 2.6 running on Fedora 17 (beta)

Digikam is a qt/KDE photo manager that I actually like quite a bit for touching up photos, but like a lot of other things in KDE it always feels like it has way too many menu options, and buttons that may or may not do what you want, but I think it is by far the most robust none-wine photo manager application Linux has at the moment. I am also a fan of the kipi plugins that allow me to connect to Facebook and back up my photos.

Fotoxx 12.01.2 on Fedora 17b (beta)

Have you ever heard of Fotoxx? Well, I hadn't until today. I was playing around with a few other Linux distributions and saw that one of them came with this application installed as their default photo manager. I did a yum search on Fedora and found that the RPM for fotoxx was available in Fedora. I was actually surpised by how well made it is. GNOME 3's full screen 'friendly' design doesn't quite work with it, but something like LXDE could a reasonable solution. The only thing I found it to be a bit annoying is the fact that you can't edit a photo while they are being synced with its photography library.

I assume you have Chrome already installed, and that you use kerberos authentication tools for other things (ie kinit).

As root:

edit /usr/local/share/applications/google-chrome.desktop and modify the Exec line to:

Exec=/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome --auth-server-whitelist="*example.com"
--args %U

where *example.com is your kerberos realm.

Your Chrome icon should now be kerberos aware.

I love writing, yet, in recent years I've found myself writing very little if at all. Now, just because I love writing it doesn't mean I am a good writer.

I write for myself.
I write because I love words.
I write because it's a privilege.

It is a privilege to have the mental and physical ability to write.
It is a privilege to have been educated to translate thoughts into written words.
It is a privilege to be able to write in a language that is not my native language.
É um privilégio também poder escrever em Português, minha língua mãe.

In recent years, I've written a few poems [http://allpoetry.com/poems/by/afsilva] and a few Linux articles [http://linuxgazette.net/authors/silva.html], but not much else. The question I ask myself is 'why?'

"Well, I've been busy." - I keep telling myself. In the past couple years, work really has taken a toll on my free time, but then again as a someone once said 'if it is important enough for you then make time.' So, I will scratch that one.

If it is not because I am too busy then what is the main reason for the decadence of the virtue of writing in my life?

I blame social networks!

I have been charmed into the webs of Facebook and Twitter in such a way that I believe a couple of things have happened to me over time.

The idea of instant gratification (and notification) that surrounds 'micro-blogging' is very attractive. By 'micro-blogging' I mean: write to 'your friends' whatever you want to say in a very limited number of characters (i.e. 140 characters in Twitter).

Now, I understand I have never been forced to use Twitter (or Facebook), and I am an adult with the power to walk away any time I choose. But between our natural desire for not being alone and being noticed by others combined with the social aspect of these tools (i.e. connecting with friends) I feel I have sold out my personal opinions for the sake of others approval and degraded my thought process for the sake of getting noticed in 'virtual real' time.

Instead of experiencing life, absorbing the moment, contemplating on it and eventually expressing myself in written words, I will quickly post something on Twitter or Facebook to try to get the attention and approval (or sympathy) of my so-called 'friends'.

I am not writing this to complaint or bash social networks. Not at all, and I don't intend to boycott them either ... Well, I do want to eventually leave Facebook, but not because of my lack of writing [maybe a subject for another post in the future].

I am writing just because... I can!

Back in December 2009, I wrote 'My computers over the years' just to see if I could list all the computers I've ever owned until that point in time. Well, today, someone at work made a statement that reminded me of this old post, and inspired me to write a follow up to it. The statement my co-worker made was so 'touching' that I even shared it on twitter:

"someone at work today said they got their first computer in 2001, and then bragged about how 'slow' it was...#neverfeltsoold"

Quite a few things have changed since December 2009, netbooks have been replaced by tablets, Apple is the most valuable company in the world, and everyone is talking about the 'cloud', but I still keep going back and forth between OS X and Linux at home. Anyway, let me get back to the subject.

I am glad to report that I owned that Lenovo T500 (from my previous post for an entire 12 months), and only on October 2010 did I get a new computer. [Trust me, that is an accomplishment for me] :-)

Apple Macbook Air r 13.3/1.86/2/128FLASH - Very nice laptop, and to this day, I still think it is one of the finest portable laptops ever put together, but it wasn't good enough if you wanted to run Virtual Machines.

System 76 Pangolin Performance 7 - These are basically MSI laptop re-branded that are shipped with Ubuntu Linux. The laptop itself is pretty customizable and reasonably priced, but they are big, and bulky. Yet, unlike most of the laptops in this post, I still own this one. It currently runs Windows 7 and my wife uses it. :-)

Lenovo Thinkpad X220 - It turned out that the System76 laptop was way too big/heavy for me, and since my wife needed a new computer, and she like the bigger machines... I went ahead and went 'small'. Although I find Lenovo Thinkpad design extremely ugly, IMHO, when it comes to running Linux they have the best laptops around.

Apple MacBook Pro 13.3/2.3/2X2GB/320/SD - Now, in the Summer of 2011, I got a new job offer which I actually accepted. So, as I was ready to leave Red Hat, I thought to myself: "Let's get back into some photography, family videos since I will probably won't be using as much Linux I usually do..." Well, it was kinda of a mistake because I ended up going back on job offer and decided to stay at Red Hat. :-)

March 2012

HP Envy 14 - Here I go again, not only did I stay at Red Hat, I also got a new job within the company which has been requiring me to 'play' with and learn a lot of new technologies [insert shameless self-promotion here: http://www.openshift.com], and unlike the Macbook Air which ran Fedora Linux well enough, I did have quite a few issues trying to get the Macbook Pro with the latest Fedora of the time.

So what to do? Try to get something that runs Linux (well and easy). Well, this HP Envy 14 was a very nice machine and reasonably priced as well, but getting Fedora to run on it was a real pain the butt [I eventually figured it out].

Now, I have 3 growing boys and as they get older and require technology to do school work and play some games, my wife has become more and more deprived from the System76 she has been using. So, I suggested she'd take the Macbook Pro, while I used this new HP Envy 14.

Two things ended up happening:

1. My wife does not like macs, she gave it a honest try, but she just doesn't care of OS X.

2. The Ctrl key on my HP Envy 14 started sticking, and it was a bit of a pain to get support to fix it, but it was resolved.

Specs:

2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2720QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 3.3 GHz

1GB DDR3 Radeon(TM) HD 6630 switchable Graphics [HDMI, Mini Display Port]

8GB 1600MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 DIMM)

Lenovo Thinkpad T420 - And that's how I got here! In a nutshell: My wife doesn't like Macs, I am not happy with the HP Envy, and I want to use/develop in Linux. So, I sell my Macbook Pro, give my wife the HP Envy so the kids can use the System76, and I get a new Lenovo Thinkpad T420. And they lived happily ever after... so far ;-)

I have an HP Envy 14 with an 1GB DDR3 Radeon(TM) HD 6630 switchable Graphics device. I had to do some researching online to find a way to get Fedora 16 working on it. Here are some tips:

When you install Fedora, isntall witht he basic graphics driver, if you do a regular install you will get a 'blank' screen.

Once that is installed using the VESA X drivers, you will be able to get to your Window Manager of choice, but it won't be running at the native resolution of 1366x768.

Add the following to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local

#!/bin/bash
modprobe radeon
echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
echo 2 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
modprobe cpufreq_ondemand
chmod 777 /sys/module/iwlwifi/parameters/power_save
echo Y > /sys/module/iwlwifi/parameters/power_save
echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host*/link_power_management_policy
for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend; do echo 1 > $i; done
hdparm -B 1 -S 200 /dev/sd*
xset +dpms; xset dpms 0 0 300

    4. Check your /etc/grub2.cfg, and make sure you don't have "nomodeset" on your kernel entry, if you do, remove it.
    5. Add the these extra parameters:

        i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 pcie_aspm=force

This should take care of it. Basically, what we are doing here is turning off the ATI graphics on the laptop, and leaving the Intel HD 3000 on, and setting a few more parameters to manage the battery life a bit better.

The reason the 'blank screen' shows up is because for some reason the machine gets booted with the brightness all the way to 0. That's what 'echo 2 >...' line does, set the brightness up.

I am using XFCE, and my work around for it is to find in which workspace the application is running, use ALT+TAB to select the application, and then use ALT+SPACE, which will bring up the "right click" title bar menu for that application and then I can click on "Move" and bring the window back into the display.

Should work in GNOME too.

After 4.5+ years in IT, I will be joining the Openshift Ops team in Engineering.

What's Openshift? Simply put it is an implementation of PaaS (Platform as a Service). Currently there are two solutions being offered by Red Hat:

<strike>Express:</strike> "A free, shared, cloud-based application platform for Java, Perl, PHP, Python, and Ruby applications. It's super-simple—your development environment is also your deployment environment:
git push"

<strike>Flex: A dedicated solution that gives you "more control over your apps, or move your existing applications to the cloud with ease! Flex is a dedicated cloud solution that provides everything you need to easily scale, provision, deploy, and monitor your applications."</strike>

I have written a couple of application and deployed them on Openshift.

The first one is a PHP based application that interfaces with the flickr API, and allows you to search for users on flickr while displaying their most popular photos: http://f-bean2.rhcloud.com.

The second one is Ruby based, and it basically uses Google's gdata API to talk to YouTube and display my family's playlist in a customized way: http://videos.the-silvas.com (http://y-bean2.rhcloud.com).

bash-3.2$ c=1
bash-3.2$ echo $c
1
bash-3.2$ ((c++))
bash-3.2$ echo $c
2
