The power of belief is being revealed in many fields. We are becoming more aware of how our beliefs affect our mental and physical health, our levels of success, and what we allow ourselves to receive in life. In this post, we’ll explore why this is so and how we can use this power to our advantage.

In a culture dominated by science, the power of belief has often been relegated to the realms of religion or superstition. However, these days science is beginning to recognize and document the power of belief to affect every dimension of our lives. Our beliefs not only affect how we think and feel and what we do, but they affect us down to a cellular level.

Here’s a simplified summary of how this works: Our beliefs have a powerful effect on how we think and feel; how we think and feel strongly affects the physical environment of our cells; and quality of our cellular environment determines how our DNA expresses itself. In short, your consciousness plays a major role in which genetic potentials express themselves. In other words, how your cells are functioning is strongly influenced by what you think, feel, and believe.

If you’re interested in learning more about the scientific evidence for how belief affects cellular function, check out “The Biology of Belief” by Dr. Bruce Lipton and/or “The Genie in Your Genes” by Dawson Church, Ph.D.

Not only do your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs affect your cells, but their effect extends beyond your body into the surrounding environment. This is most obvious in the fact that these consciousness factors affect the actions you take, which have an immediate impact on the environment around you. Yet, the effect goes even deeper.

How you think, feel, believe, and act affects how the people around you think, feel, believe, and act. Yet it doesn’t stop there either. Evidence suggests that your consciousness even affects physical events in the field around you. This leads to all sorts of interesting possibilities.

Now, if you really took in this information, instead of just questioning, doubting, or arguing about it, what might it mean for you? If you believed it, how could it affect your life? Could you use this insight to make your life better?

At the very least, when you begin to feel discomfort, negativity, stress, or pain, especially if these experiences are recurring or dominant ones in your life, you might ask yourself:

What do I believe about this situation?

For example, do you believe that what’s happening is the result of “outside forces” or the result of “something you are doing?” Which way you believe gives you more or less power.

To help you get a better handle on your beliefs, you might ask:

What thoughts are in my head? What feelings are in my heart? What actions am I engaged in? Have I had this or a similar experience before? When was the first time I can remember feeling this way?

Shining awareness on your recurring thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can open you up to a whole new dimension of inner power. When you witness how your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs shape what happens in your life, it may inspire you to experiment with what you can do to shift these consciousness factors in a positive way.

Enjoy your practice,

Have you ever been in the supermarket where you witness a mother or father struggling with their kids and yelling at them? Did you get upset at the “meanness” of these parents? Did you feel that the kids weren’t being respected and cared for? Have you ever been shocked to find yourself being that parent?

Or have you found yourself annoyed at a driver weaving in and out of traffic because he was only thinking of himself and putting the rest of us at risk? Have you also found yourself occasionally being that driver?

Do you get angry when you see wars of religion—one trying to dominate the other with its “right” point of view? Do you find yourself being intolerant of intolerance?

The web of judgment is certainly tangled.

Is it possible to move beyond that?

Let me share a brief story that opened my eyes about this.

As I related in last week’s post, my wife and I take an annual trip to Sedona Arizona for our anniversary. On this trip we like to take a hike up onto Cathedral Rock. It’s one of our favorite spots. The lush environment around the base of the rock is so peaceful and serene, while the heights of the perches at the top are simply majestic. Legend has it that this gigantic red rock formation has a powerful energy that comforts you and makes you feel like everything is O.K. It’s even said, as I shared last week, that, if you are open to it, you can receive messages from this rock.

Any judgments come up for you yet?

So, my wife and I are enjoying the two hour climb around the north face to east face and upward to the top. At several points, the rock gets pretty steep and some folks balk at this point. On my first time here, I had serious doubts and had to take a moment to relax and dig for some courage. To an experienced hiker or climber, it’s probably nothing too exciting or dangerous. Nevertheless, everyone seems quite accepting of varying levels of courage when you reach these points. The comfortable ones take a break and wait for the less confident ones. The fearless ones assure the scared ones that everything will be O.K.

When my wife and I reached the top, or as high as you can go without equipment, we took some pictures and then settled into a comfortable spot to rest up and enjoy the “energy” of the mountain. We lay down on the red rocks, my wife in the sun and me with my back against the cool red rock wall in the shade. I enjoyed the silence, punctuated only by the occasional “thunderous” helicopter flying by for a bird’s eye view. As an experiment, I asked the big rock if it had any message for me.

Shortly, there came a blustery, athletic presence storming up the hill, huffing and puffing. He took the top, had a brief look around, made some loud comments to his girlfriend, and then quickly began his descent. “In it for the workout,” came to my mind.

Next there came a middle-aged couple. When they reached the top it was clear that the woman was pretty scared. She stared at the way back down with trepidation. Almost immediately she began her descent, backing down on all fours, while being coached enthusiastically by her husband. “Missed the experience,” I thought.

Soon thereafter, came a barefooted girl with tattoos on her arms. She arrived at the top silently, like a cat, found a nice slab in the sun, and lay down with a smile on her face. “She’s really got it right,” I thought.

I followed suit, closed my eyes, and felt “soooo” relaxed against the soft, cool, red rock. I asked again for a message.

Before long these words came into my head: “Everyone’s experience is valid.”

I instantly felt how this released my judgments against those who “raced” up the mountain, were “too scared” to enjoy the experience at the top, or “too noisy” to listen and feel the silence. As I let this realization soak in, I understood it in a visceral way, in a way I hadn’t before.

Everyone’s experience is valid from their point of view. It makes sense to them given who they are, where they’ve come from, and where they are going. Who am I to judge that? I have no idea about any of those things for someone else.

In that moment, I felt free of judgment toward others and free to be myself. These two fit perfectly hand in hand. I’ve since discovered that, when I carry this phrase into life—“everyone’s experience is valid”—it frees me to appreciate the unique qualities that each of us bring to the table. The consciousness behind this phrase creates a fertile ground of understanding which can be used to resolve conflict and cooperate toward what we all truly desire—which is, at once, different and the same.

Enjoy your practice,

“Everything is as it is meant to be.” I received this message from the Giant Rock People while lying on the top of Cathedral Rock in Sedona this past weekend. In this post, we’ll explore what that could mean for you in this “epoch-making year of 2012.”

My wife and I take a yearly trip to Sedona Arizona to celebrate our Anniversary. One of our favorite events on this trip is our climb to the top of Cathedral Rock. This year that trek was particularly significant.

Before our hike, I was reading a book about how, if you are open to it, the sacred red rocks of places like Cathedral Rock, may give you messages. I was anxious to try this out—just to see what might happen.

It was a beautiful sunny spring day in Sedona as we made our way along the creek that borders the north of Cathedral Rock. Here’s a picture of the view from below:

After about 20 minutes, we reached the “ascent” where switchbacks begin to take you up the north and then the east side of this majestic mountain. For us, it takes about 1 ½ to 2 hours to make the climb, at times going on all fours up the rock face.

At the top, there are several perches from which you can view the sweeping landscape far below, lie in the sun, or rest in the shade with your back against the red rock walls. If you are open to it, when you sit at the top, if you close your eyes and “feel the mountain” you may find yourself “verrrryyy” relaxed, you might fall into a dreamy sleep, you might get messages—or none of this may happen.

As my wife and I sat at the topmost point, we watched various people come and go—each with their very own experience. There was a guy who you could hear coming from a distance, grunting and moving at an intense clip. I got from him that this was a “great workout” and he was determined to push himself up as fast as he could go. He reached the top, took a brief glimpse around, then told his pretty young girlfriend to “stand over there” so he could take her picture. She didn’t think “she looked good enough” after the tough climb and shooed him away.

There was a middle-aged couple. The woman got to the top and you could hear that her main concern was how scary it was to look at the way back down. She almost immediately began to back her way down, her husband, like a high school football coach at her side, telling her where to step and “how great she was doing.”

Then there was the barefoot girl. Yes, she had made the rocky hike barefoot. When she got to the top she found a nice slab in the sun and nestled in for a little rest with a smile on her face.

After looking around for a bit and wondering in amazement at how there seemed to be two Giant Rock People overlooking the spot, like guardians, my wife and I joined the barefoot girl’s style. After all, I was looking forward to “a message.”

The first message I received was “I am soooo relaxed.” I settled my spine against the cool and surprisingly soft red rocks and sunk in. I felt like I could rest here for ages.

I asked if there was any message the Rock People wanted to share. I rested and waited.

Before too long, the words, “Everything is as it is meant to be” came gently into my mind. As I wondered about the meaning of that, I saw images of past events in my life that had seemed like they were “mistakes,” or felt “painful,” or “confusing,” and I saw that they were exactly as they were meant to be. I wouldn’t be “here, now” without those experiences, exactly as they were. I felt a great comfort in that. I felt “It’s O.K. All of it. Every single detail.”

What if I went through life with that perspective? What if I accepted and appreciated the exact details of everything that is happening?
How would that shift my experience?

How might it shift yours?

How would it change your life if you listened for messages from the rocks? Or the trees? Or the sky? Or . . .

At the least, it might put a smile on your face.

Next week, I’ll share another message from the Rock People.

Enjoy your practice,

Kevin

Last week, I had an intense, sharp pain in my upper abdomen. Now, of course, this could have been a sign of a “medical condition” that required attention. However, in this case, I could trace the cause to an emotional event. As I became more conscious of that emotional event and resolved the thoughts and feelings around it, the pain went away. Could it be that many pains in our bodies have mental-emotional causes?

Now, the point of this post is not to tell you to avoid medical care when you need it. If you pay attention, your body will tell you when that is required. For example, many years ago I had appendicitis and there was no doubt at all—zero—that I was going to the hospital. I had received warning symptoms from my body, related to my mental-emotional state, for months, that I hadn’t paid attention to. If I had, maybe it wouldn’t have gotten to that point. After my medical treatment, I was able to go back and address those issues more consciously.

The point is, whether you need medical care or not, it can be beneficial to explore the deeper conscious meaning behind the events in your life, especially the painful ones. There is a mental-emotional component to everything that happens. Sometimes this component is so strong that it is a primary causal factor. As you address those mental-emotional issues, you gain greater clarity about what you need to do to move forward in a healthy way.

Let me describe my pain from last week, so you get an idea how this might go:

I had this intense pain in my upper right abdomen. From previous inner observations, I have come to know this pain as associated with my liver and with anger. Anger is often a message that there is something I am trying to protect. So when I get this pain, I ask: “What am I trying to protect?”

I recognized that, at that moment, I was trying to protect “What I wanted to do in my work.” I had just read an email that was asking me to do something that I really didn’t want to do. Almost immediately, I felt angry and, soon thereafter, I felt this pain in my upper right abdomen.

As I recognized and accepted what I believed gave rise to this pain, the pain shifted. It moved to my left upper abdomen, which felt painful and queasy. I’ve come to know this type of pain as associated with anxiety about “The way I am and if others will accept and respect me and what I feel strongly about.”

As I acknowledged, observed, and accepted this feeling, that pain also began to subside. I then did some deep breathing through that area and practiced a meditation technique to bring me back to my calm center. I then wrote an email response that reflected “what I really wanted to do.”

My current experience with pain is that the earlier and earlier I pay attention to subtle signals in my body and address them, the more quickly and easily these symptoms resolve. I can often address them mentally-emotionally and physically long before the point that medical care is needed. And if I reach the point where medical care is needed, I can work on the mental-emotional layer along with the physical to facilitate healing.

So, the message I wish to pass along today is this:

Pay attention to the feelings in your body.
Listen for the messages underneath pain.
And then follow your inner guidance.

Enjoy your practice,

At the end of last week, I was tapped out. I felt like I’d given everything I had, yet still had more to do. Though the weekend was coming, that too was filled with a nice-sized TO DO List. So, approaching the Qigong Meditation class that I teach every Friday afternoon felt a bit daunting. How would I summon up the energy to give a good class? What I didn’t know was that I would discover the answer in that very class.

Fortunately, I’ve taught this class for years, so I trust the practice and my ability to lead it. Usually, I begin with a little talk on some pertinent insight related to what we are about to do. However, this day, as I contemplated what to say, the words in my head were: “I got nothing.”

O.K. I’d really have to trust the practice today. I decided to dispense with the intro talk and just dive into it. I would let go, be present with what we were doing, and feel it “live” in the moment. I would “get out of the way,” which would be easy because I had no energy to be “in the way” or “take control” of how the class would go.

As I let go of trying at all, and just sunk into feeling the inner cues that begin our practice, I felt a “deep resonance” in my voice that I didn’t expect. Honestly, I felt a little relieved to find that quality there without any effort of “trying” on my part. I followed that feeling and continued through the form, keeping my internal focus on being present, feeling what was happening, and allowing that to come through my voice.

As we went along, I could feel the energy in the room getting very quiet and deeply relaxed. I found myself naturally expressing what was going on using some words I hadn’t used in that class before such as “Feel yourself as a simple presence with nothing else attached.”

At the end of class, we go around the room and I invite our class members to describe, “How did that feel today?” There was a general consensus that the room felt “very quiet” today, as if we had left the world and gone to a peaceful oasis. While I am well familiar with that feeling and relax into it as a daily practice, it was particularly deep and stayed with me particularly strongly the rest of that day—and I still feel it on this Monday.

So, that is my message for you today. In whatever you are doing, see if there might be something in this for you:

“Let go of trying too hard.

Relax, trust, and let things come to you.

Be present with what is happening—

and be open to a deeper energy and calm

moving through you and leading the way.”

Enjoy your practice,

We’ve all witnessed the negative effects of anger, when it is reactive, self-righteous, and violent. However, there is also a positive energy and purpose in anger that is important to pay attention to and use wisely. In this post, we’ll talk about both faces of anger, how to differentiate them, and how to use anger productively.

As with all emotions, anger contains energy and information. In the case of anger, the energy is rising strength and the message is: “something needs protection.” Understanding this essential purpose in anger can help us to recognize what anger is trying to tell us and how we can use that energy and information in a good way.

The positive purpose in anger is to protect yourself or others in the face of a threat to well-being. For example, you see someone being harmed and the anger you feel alerts you and empowers you to step in and set a firm boundary against what is happening. An appropriate use of that anger is to firmly say “No!” or “Stop!” or to physically step in the middle and disarm the perpetrator.

When we understand the purpose of anger we can be more conscious of how to use this energy wisely. Then, we can accomplish the mission of protection while minimizing any harm done in the process. For example, we can use words and reason first and then defensive actions if required.

However, sometimes anger flares when we don’t really need to protect anything. This type of anger protects something that it is really better to release and let go. A whole lot of unnecessary conflict can be avoided if we let this anger go instead of following it. I’ll give you a small example that happened to me yesterday.

I was at the gym doing my Sunday workout. As I was going through my routine, I found that the machine I usually use next was occupied. The person occupying the machine was sitting there texting. Following normal gym etiquette, I asked if I could “work in,” which means that one person alternates with the other while the other person is resting between sets.

To my surprise, the person sitting on the machine said, “I’d prefer if you didn’t, I’m super-setting.” Whether it was the tone of how he said that or the fact that he was texting and not super-setting, I don’t know, but instantly my anger flared. In a nano-second, I rationalized my feeling into a full-blown, self-righteous anger.

I thought: “Does he think he owns the place? . . . What gives him more right than me? . . . He’s texting! . . . What an ______________! . . .”

Now the reality of the situation was, there was a machine right next to that one, that was similar enough that I could use it instead—and I did. Yet, as I was using it, I found myself wanting to verbally put him in his place. Angry words continued to run through my brain. My ego was hurt and I wanted revenge. O.K. that might be dramatic for such a small offense, but how often is anger overblown like that?

Fortunately, my better sense got hold of me and, after doing my sets on the machine next to him, I moved away to another part of the gym. Yet, I still had to work with mind. I told myself that what happened hadn’t hindered my workout at all, it just slightly adjusted my normal routine—and probably in a good way. A little variety is good for the muscles.

I also realized that his statement had triggered an old reaction of “feeling less than others”—something I’ve struggled with through my life. In some cases, it has been important for me to stand up and express myself. Yet, in this case, it really didn’t matter. I knew it was best to just let it go.

Still, little nagging angry thoughts kept running through my head—until I took one more step in my mind. I put myself in his shoes. I realized that there were many times in the past that I had felt like him. I don’t like to be interrupted in my routine and, when I am on a machine, I don’t like to give it up. Now, I usually do let others “work in” when they ask, but I understood his feeling, because I’ve often felt that way myself. When I put myself in his shoes and tried to understand where he was coming from, my anger stepped down another few notches.

Then I decided to take it one step further. I looked across the room at him and wished him a good workout. I know how important a good workout is to me, so I sent that message to him. I don’t know if it made any difference to him, but it took the final edge off my anger. I was able to completely let it go and move on.

So, the message here is that sometimes anger has a positive purpose, sometimes it arises to protect something that needs protection. At other times, anger may be defending something that is better let go. In that case, the positive purpose in anger could be to put ourselves in another’s shoes and consciously let our anger go. Maybe the bottom-line is that anger can always be used productively when we approach it consciously and use it wisely.

I hope you find this helpful when you feel the energy of anger rising up in you.

Enjoy your practice,

Last week we explored the idea that we enter life preloaded with “default settings” that set us up to experience things in certain ways. We have subconscious and habitual attitudes, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and behaviors that seem hardwired into our psyche. As a result of these, we find ourselves having the same experiences over and over again. In this post, we’ll look at two keys to reprogramming your consciousness so you can have better experiences.

Though your default settings often exist below your conscious awareness and feel inevitable, it is possible to become aware of these settings and consciously reset them. You can recognize what you are thinking, feeling, and doing, release that, and rewrite these programs.

Here are two simple keys to doing that:

First, learn how to put yourself in a relaxed, positive, clear, and coherent inner state. This neutralizes the effects of old programs and creates fertile soil to plant the seeds of new attitudes, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and behaviors.

Second, use an inner programming method to plant, nurture, and grow the new attitudes, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and behaviors that you’d rather have instead.

One way to accomplish both of these steps is through a meditation technique such as Core Energy Meditation, which is available in our program “Raise Your Vibration.”

Another way is using brainwave entrainment along with mind-programming technology.

Matt Clarkson and I have written a special report that compares and contrasts these two powerful strategies and gives you insight into how to use them safely and effectively. You can check out this report by clicking on the link in the P.S. below.

Enjoy!

You may have heard about the “wonders” of “Brainwave Entrainment Technology” (BET)? (It’s touted to help you “meditate like a monk,” tap your inner genius, heal your emotional wounds, and manifest everything you desire.) And it’s all so darn simple and effortless! All you have to do is put on a set of headphones and let the technology work its magic on your brain. Who wouldn’t want that?

However…

Here at The Mind-Body Training Company, we’ve had serious reservations about promoting any products that utilize BET. We’ve had concerns about how this technology is marketed and how safe it really is. This has led us to turn down countless promotional opportunities (that frankly, would have been very, very lucrative). Now we feel it’s time to set the record straight.

In this report, I’d like to tell you the truth about Brainwave Entrainment Technology.
Did you know you have default settings that determine what shows up in your life and how you experience it? For example, your experiences of health, wealth, and love are all shaped by preset assumptions that leave you open to certain experiences and closed to others. In this post, we’ll explore what a default setting is and how you can change it to change your life for the better.

You’re probably familiar with default settings on your computer. They come preset by the factory. For example, your computer has default settings for screen resolution, font size, desktop background, and folders and directories to use for specific functions. Interestingly, embedded in the definition of “default” is the idea that these settings can be changed by the user. A higher level user can adjust a huge variety of settings on their computer to customize a better experience.

The same can be said for your life experiences. In life, you come preloaded with certain default settings in your DNA and these are further defined by the beliefs of the culture and family you grow up in, the teachers you have, and the friends you keep. These belief settings tell you what is real and possible for you.

Now, you can go through life on auto-pilot simply carrying out the life that is handed down to you by your default settings or you can set about customizing your experience and designing the life that you want to have. This second option is what mind-body training is all about. Mind-body training is about increasing self-awareness of your default settings and training yourself to let go of what you no longer desire and building what you would rather have instead.

For example, you may have grown up with your parents telling you that life is hard, that the economy is terrible, and that you can’t trust anyone. After years of hearing that story, you get very good at looking at life through that lens. As a result, you come to see life in the same way. These are your default settings. When you wake up in the morning and begin to experience life, you’ll find good evidence that life is hard, the economy is terrible, and you can’t trust anyone. You perceive those things because you’ve been trained to look for evidence to support those points of view.

However, what if you wake up one day and decide that you’re sick and tired of struggling, not having enough, and mistrusting everyone you meet? What if you decide to investigate other possibilities? What if you suddenly realize that the way you are looking at life is just one way amongst many alternative possibilities? What if you wake up to the idea that “life is what you make of it and you’ll find whatever you’re looking for”?

What might happen to your life if you decided to take charge of your default settings? What if you saw your life as a work of art that you can design in any way you desire? If per chance that was possible, what difference would that make? How would you choose to look at things?

Would you look for evidence that life is full of grace and fully supports you to be who you are meant to be?

Would you look for evidence that life always provides exactly what you need when you need it?

Would you be grateful for every opportunity you are given every day?

Would you love others because you realize that’s the best way to grow love in the world?

What are your default settings? What do you believe? Look at the results in your life and you’ll see a reflection of your current beliefs.

Now, if you were to consciously define your default settings, how would you choose to look at life?

What if you did that today?

Enjoy your practice,

Did you know that a leading cause of death in the United States is medical treatment? How could that be? We debate over whether or not everyone should have access to our healthcare system, while the safest thing might be to stay away from it. Obviously, something is faulty in how we view health and what it takes to maintain it.

The problem begins with how we view our bodies and what makes for health. We begin with the assumption that our bodies are simply chemical systems. Our intervention then is in the form of chemical manipulation. From that point of view, whether it’s indigestion or depression, we operate as if illness is a “drug deficiency.” We deal with symptoms not causes—and, of course, this all makes a lot of money for those who deal the drugs.

So what other view is possible?

What if, as other medical systems around the world have known for centuries, the human body is an amazingly intelligent bio-energetic information system?

What does that mean for health and illness?

First, it means that chemical processes are secondary to what is happening in the bio-energetic information field of your body. It is the free flow of bio-energetic information in this field that initiates and guides the chemical processes. What is happening in this field also programs and activates the DNA in your cells. When there is disruption of this bio-energetic information flow, there is illness.

What is especially powerful about this realization is that it recognizes the tremendous self-healing ability of your body and the power you have to positively affect your health. Here are four things you can do right now to facilitate a healthy cellular environment and increase the smooth flow of bio-energy:

1. Exercise consistently doing some form of cardio exercise, strengthening, and stretching.

2. Eat a variety of fresh, whole, organic foods in as close to their natural state as possible. Foods in this form provide the bio-energetic structure and nutrients that your body thrives on.

3. Begin your day with some form of conscious relaxation, prayer, or meditation to bring your body and mind out of stress mode into calm, conscious, clarity and inner connection.

4. Throughout the day, practice thoughts and feelings of appreciation, gratitude, and trust. Appreciate and be grateful for the opportunities and gifts of each moment. Trust that you are always provided for and witness how this is indeed the case. One rule of consciousness is this: “You experience what you are looking for.”

Do these four things every day and you will revolutionize your health and well being and grow positive results in your life.

Enjoy your practice!
