You’ve probably heard that the right and the left sides of your brain process information differently. However, you may not recognize what this really means in your own experience. Did you know that the difference between your left and right brain may be the source of inner conflicts that make you suffer? In this post, we’ll explore the gifts from each side of our brain and how we can integrate the two to realize our greater potential.

To better understand the two hemispheres of our brain, let’s first talk about three major parts of our brain. In the center of the brain, we have the brainstem which is responsible for regulating bodily processes and initiating reactive responses to what is going on around us. On top of the brainstem lies the limbic or “emotional” brain which adds a layer of primary feelings, such as love and fear, and is key to our sense of connection with others and the formation of significant memories. On top of this is the neo-cortex, the seat of our “higher” brain functions, including language, reason, moral judgment, and complex understandings of self and others. The neo-cortex is where we find our brain divided in halves, into left and right hemispheres.

The right hemisphere is intimately linked with our body, our raw emotions, our spatial awareness, our ability to relax, and our sense of meaning, metaphor, and images of self and relationships with others. The right hemisphere understands the “whole” of things and seeks connections and similarities.

The left hemisphere is more detached from direct experience, like an “ivory tower” throne of reason and ideas. The left hemisphere sees in terms of linear, logical, literal chains of cause and effect which it loves to define, label, analyze, and control. It tends to see things as “black and white,” “all or nothing.”

You could say that the left brain is our “digital” mode, while the right brain is “analog.”

O.K. so what does that mean in your everyday life?

One thing is, when you get afraid, you may retreat to the ivory tower of rigid ideas and “black and white” thinking. You may then get defensive because you only are able to see things as “right or wrong,” “us versus them.” You may become disconnected from your ability to see similarities and relationships. It’s as if you are operating with only half your brain, using only the half that sees conflict and difference.

Second, not only can this left-side dominance lead to conflict, it may also deny the balancing qualities of the right side of your brain. The left side wants only measurable and arguable facts and may shutdown the reconciling holistic perspective of right brain thinking. If you ever find yourself locked in defending a rigid position and unable to sense your own deeper feelings or the positions of others, you may be a victim of left-brain dominance.

So, what to do?

To activate your right brain and come back into balance, you can engage in some right brain dominant activities. Most simply, you could go for a walk, feel your feet on the ground, breathe deeply, relax your muscles, take in the natural environment, gaze at the sky and the landscape, and tune-in to your inner felt experience. You could then listen attentively to others and make note of their body language—their posture, their tone of voice, their facial expressions, and how “they feel” to you.

Don’t worry, you won’t lose your rational point of view, you’ll just gain a larger perspective—you’ll regain your whole brain function. You’ll become able not only to reason, but to take in the whole situation, relax yourself, engage with others, and see a variety of alternatives, so you can make more fully informed conscious choices.

You’ve heard it said that we only use a small percentage of our brain capacity. You can regain much of that capacity by engaging the often underused right side of your brain.

Enjoy your practice,

Does life seem to happen to you or are you the master of your destiny? What degree of control do you really have about what happens in your life? In this post, we’ll explore what you control, what you don’t, and how to achieve personal mastery.

A powerful perspective has emerged in the past decade that goes something like this: “You can attract into your life whatever you desire.” This statement tends to get people very excited. It gives many people hope that they can change their lives in ways that will make them healthier, wealthier, and happier. It gives people hope that they can attract their soul mate and their dream job. What I love about this statement is that it empowers people to open up to possibilities and do something about them.

Now, as many people have sought to put this statement into practice, there’s been mixed results. For some people imagining what they desire and holding it in their mind has seemed like magic, drawing to them circumstances and events that seem to be the exact fulfillment of what they imagined. For others, imagining what they desire has been an exercise in frustration. It’s brought repeated disappointments as things haven’t worked out as they hoped they would.

Are some people just better at this than others? Do some people have the Midas touch, while others don’t? Is it a matter of practice, or sincerity, or intensity, or . . . Is it because some of us have more inner resistance, doubt, and fear related to what we desire? Or is it simply fate? Perhaps some of us are luckier than the rest?
As I witness what happens in my own life and the lives of my clients, a couple things have become apparent about this whole “manifestation” process. One is this:

Each of us is given specific personal qualities, interests, talents, and resources. We are happiest and most “in the flow” of life’s resources when we acknowledge, develop, and share what we’ve been given. We have the most success and enjoyment when we are in alignment with “who we are” and “what we are here to do.” So job one is to discern our “authentic possibilities.”

Second, on the path of our authentic possibilities, we are asked to face any inner limits, fears, doubts, and past pain that we are holding onto. As we acknowledge, accept, and integrate these “broken” parts of ourselves, we heal and become freer. As a result, life flows more smoothly and abundantly. Our authentic possibilities are paths of healing that are unique to each of us.

So what can you control in your life?

At least two things:

1. What you focus on

2. How you relate to whatever happens

If you choose to focus on your authentic possibilities, so that you grow and share what you have been given, you align with your right path. You may think you want many different things, but only when you discover and commit to your authentic possibilities will you experience yourself flowing with Life’s current and finding the peace, satisfaction, and abundance that comes from that.

Second, if you relate to whatever happens on your authentic path as an opportunity to learn and grow, you’ll free yourself from thinking that something has gone wrong when you meet with challenges. Challenges are opportunities to clear inner resistance, to heal, and realize a deeper grace that is always carrying you along your authentic path.

No matter what happens in life, you can learn to control what you focus on and how you relate to whatever happens.

Enjoy your practice,

Do moods seem to come over you in a random way? Are your feelings like a rollercoaster that take you up and down? Does it ever happen that one minute you feel one way, then the next minute something happens that makes you feel completely different? Do your moods seem to happen to you or do you have a say in the process? In this week’s post, we’ll explore 3 steps you can take to positively influence how you feel.

No matter what you’re feeling, there’s one step that will add a positive dimension to your experience—being mindful or conscious of it. If what you’re feeling “feels bad” then becoming aware of it is the first step to understanding and shifting the direction of your feeling. If what you are feeling “feels good,” becoming aware of it can accentuate and grow that positive experience.

By mindfulness I mean recognizing and accepting whatever you are experiencing at the moment. Rather than judging your experience as “good” or “bad,” you simply bring it into your awareness, acknowledge it, and seek to understand it. You bring your present experience into your conscious awareness by paying attention to what you are thinking, feeling, and doing right now. This is in contrast to being “lost” in what you are doing.

Mindfulness adds the frontal lobe activity of your higher brain centers to any experience you are having. Your frontal lobes are your “Command and Control Center”—they coordinate and integrate the functioning of the different parts of your body and brain. When you consciously pay attention to something, it activates your frontal lobes.

Applying conscious attention to any experience, instead of simply being swept along by it, adds a layer of awareness, meaning, and control onto whatever you are going through. You gain the ability to understand what you are doing that is making you feel the way that you do. You realize that what you are experiencing is a direct result of what you are doing internally, what you are thinking and feeling. In other words, you see that how you interpret whatever is happening strongly flavors your experience.

Paying attention to “where you are coming from at the moment” is step one to shifting how you feel.

The second step is to realize that wherever you are coming from, whatever you are thinking and feeling, is just one possibility amongst many—and it doesn’t define who you are. Your present experience is just a way of looking at things. It is simply one possible point of view and there are a wide variety of valid perspectives. When you understand that your point of view is one of many alternatives, that insight can free you to look at your choices and choose what will work best for you and those around you.

The third step, then, is to choose how you will think, feel, and act to create the experience you desire. It can be as simple as this: if you want to change how you feel, you can consciously focus on how you want to feel. A great example of this is practicing Inner Smiling. We do this as an integral part of Qigong and Core Energy Meditation practice. It’s really quite simple and amazingly effective, once you get the hang of it.

To practice Inner Smiling, lightly close your eyes, take a couple deep breaths, and put a subtle smile on your lips. Allow the feeling of smiling to relax and soften your jaw, your face, your eyes, your eyebrows, and your forehead. Take a deep in breath and, as you exhale, imagine the feeling of smiling washing like a wave of positive energy down through your whole body. Imagine that every cell in your body is smiling. Soak in that good feeling.

Take a few moments to try that now and notice how you can instantly shift into a positive inner state. The more you practice this, the stronger and more effective it becomes.

I would love to hear your results with the above three steps.

Enjoy your practice!

It’s mid-January and, for many folks, reality is meeting their resolutions. Already I noticed that the gym was less crowded this Sunday than it was on the 1st or the 8th. What happens as you try to keep your resolutions? What makes the difference between those you keep and those you let go? I’ve discovered at least three keys that make a huge difference for me.

First, how often do you set a STRONG RESOLUTION that is a HUGE GOAL? We’re encouraged to set our sights high, imagine our ideal, and not sell ourselves short. But is this really good advice? Especially if you have a goal in an area of your life that is somewhat new to you, this advice might be dooming you to failure. If you set a strong intention on an ideal that is way out ahead of you, you may defeat yourself before you barely get going.

Having a strong intention can get in your way if it causes you to think idealistically and overlook real life conditions and circumstances. For example, if you want to get in shape and set your goal on losing 50 pounds by exercising intensely for two hours per day at a gym across town, you may do this for a week or two. However, it’s highly likely that you’ll get sore and exhausted, tire of the travel, and find other demands pressing on your workout time. If instead, you set your intention to workout 20 minutes a day doing moderately demanding exercises that you can do conveniently, you’re more likely to be successful. Especially, if you are new to a specific activity, set easily attainable goals, check them off, gain confidence, and then set slightly higher expectations if you want even better results.

The bottom line is this: whatever you want to expand in your life, consider what you are currently doing and the reasons for it. Consider what time, energy, and resources you have and what is really doable. That doesn’t mean that you need to be a pessimist. It just means that you’ll be more successful if you take your real life responsibilities and resources into account and develop an action plan that balances the new thing you want to do with the other activities that are important to you. Those who are most successful in reaching their goals, set intentions that are “mid-range.” They are enough of a “reach” to inspire you and realistic enough to give you confidence that you can do it. Set realistic intentions.

Secondly, any goal is a journey of small steps. Break your goal down into small steps and have a long-term perspective. No matter what you want to do, there’s going to be steps of research, gathering resources, scheduling, communicating with others, taking action, evaluating how it went, making adjustments, and taking more action. If any step feels too big or intimidating, break it down into smaller actions that feel more doable. For example, if making a career change feels “HUGE,” start by researching online, talking to others who are doing what you want to do, taking a class, volunteering in the field, and getting your feet wet. Once you’re engaged in the small steps, your new activity will take on a life of its own and carry you forward.

Finally, if what you want to do is to “stop doing something,” focus on what you want to do instead. Focus on positive action. For example:

*If you want to quit eating sugar and starchy carbs, focus on the proteins, veggies, and other foods that you will replace them with. Make what you will eat attractive and focus on that.

*If you want to stop complaining, focus on expressing appreciation.

*If you think you have no options or opportunities, focus on gratitude for what you do have.

Focus on positive replacements for actions you no longer want to participate in. Positive action is more inspiring and psychologically effective.

I would love to hear what helps you stick with your resolutions.

Enjoy your practice,

Kevin

It’s easy to make judgments based on headlines, sound-bites, and a few sentences in an email. Jumping to conclusions based on limited data seems to be a growing epidemic. Maybe it’s our increasing habit of transferring tiny bits of info that is fueling this trend. In this post, we’ll explore the mental mistake of jumping to conclusions and why it’s such a dangerous habit.

This week we received a lot of email feedback, as we always do. A few of them struck a harsh chord. They often go something like this:

“I can’t believe you would say such and such. There is no scientific evidence for that. You are just trying to make money off other people’s ignorance. For example, telling people that they can do “X and Y” to change their “Z” is a bunch of lies. You don’t know what it’s like. You should be ashamed for raising people’s hopes up.”

Now, let me say that we receive a lot of emails and most are really supportive of what we do. However, there are some of these other ones that tend to jump out at you. I want to highlight this because I think it’s indicative of an epidemic of jumping to conclusions based on limited evidence and misattribution of another’s intent.

Let’s explore these two faulty mental maneuvers.

The first one I’ll call “poor science.” I am sure that I could show you scientific evidence to support almost any conclusion you could think of. Yes, a scientific approach is important to weed out what is helpful from what is harmful, what is accurate from what is inaccurate. We can all benefit from weighing evidence and testing our assumptions and conclusions. It’s important to test things out in our own experience and weigh them against what others have discovered and “proven.”

However, I find that sometimes people who throw around “scientific evidence” come across in the least scientific way. “Science” is often used to justify what we already believe. It’s common to find a study that supports our belief system and then say, “Now there’s the real science.” That’s something to watch out for. That’s poor science.

For example, if you look at a human being as primarily a bio-chemical system, you could justify prescribing drugs for depression. If you view humans as fundamentally beings of “consciousness” or “energy” which then informs the DNA and programs body chemistry, you would look at healing depression by transforming energy, perceptions, thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Depending on what you already believe, you could find science to support either or both points of view.

A second maneuver is to think that we know what someone else is thinking, what they’ve been through, or what they intend. It’s easy to assume a “mind-reading” position. It’s important to recognize that we don’t know what someone else is thinking, what they’ve been through, or what they intend. We may very easily misinterpret things according to our own prejudices and judgments. For example, some people have difficulty with people charging money for teaching things like meditation, personal development, or spiritual growth practices. Another person may see these as equivalent to any other interest and talent that one shares to serve others and earn a living. Certainly you could find “good” and “bad” examples of both points of view.

How often have you jumped to a conclusion that you later realized was just a misinterpretation once you checked it out more in-depth?

The bottom line is: “We do not perceive things as they are, but always through a filter of our own preconceptions, judgments, intentions, beliefs, and how we feel at the moment.” I believe that the greatest service we can do for ourselves and others is to slow down a bit, take a breath, reflect on where we are coming from, and then seek to understand others better. When something pushes our buttons, we’ll help everyone out if we look at ourselves first to understand why something was such a “hot button” for us. If we take personal responsibility for our own feelings, we are much more likely to give others the benefit of the doubt.

I welcome your comments and constructive feedback.

So here we are in 2012—a year with much hype. Is this year really all that it’s cracked up to be? Is it the end of an era? What will 2012 bring to the planet? I’m not “a psychic,” nor do I normally put much stock in predictions. However, there are a couple things I notice about this year. In this post, we’ll explore two points that may give 2012 a powerful meaning in your life.

First, I believe that the meaning of 2012 is the same as the meaning of every year—except amplified. Whether it’s some alignment of our galaxy or simply a point that we’ve reached because of our history of behavior up to now, for whatever reason, the meaning of 2012 seems to be amplified. What is this meaning?

Here’s my take:

The meaning of 2012 is the meaning you give to it. We do not experience things “as they are,” but as we filter them through our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. What we experience is the result of what we bring to our experience. Each of us is a conscious presence who can inhabit anything we choose—any intentions, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and actions. What we choose to inhabit determines the experiences we have and the meaning of our life. We are “meaning giving” beings.

It seems to me that what is unique about this year is that our meaning giving activity is amplified. The meaning we give to our lives is mirrored back to us more strongly and immediately. What we experience is the instant revelation of the choices we make. We experience immediate and amplified consequences of the way we are thinking, feeling, believing, and acting.

For example, if we are thinking one way but acting another, that is shown to us straight away by experiences of tension. If we say one thing, but do another, we experience immediate conflict. If we put off something that we know is best to do, our conscience may tug at us as never before. Relationships that are based on anything less than honesty and integrity may crumble right before our eyes. I believe that action and consequence are accelerated and amplified, so that we can no longer “get away with” being less than authentic. It seems to me that we are being pushed to be honest and integrated as never before.

I notice this on an individual and a global scale. Things that have been hidden are being brought to the light. If I have been hiding something from myself, even for years, it is now being shown to me in an inescapable way. In the news, I see all kinds of corruption and dishonesty being brought to the surface. Anything that is not on the firm ground of authenticity and integrity is being shaken up.

Am I projecting all of this? Am I making it all up? It’s possible. After all, we are meaning giving beings and we can believe anything we want. Yet that only proves the point that we are meaning-giving beings. If this is true, authenticity seems to be the rule for success. When you are aligned with “who you are” and “What you are here to do,” your meaning giving activity becomes powerful. This is my second point—authenticity is the rule for success for all meaning-giving beings.

So, what will 2012 be for you?

Whatever you make of it.

I encourage you to make it a year when you honor your authenticity and encourage others to do the same. Be yourself. Do what you are here to do. Love others for who they are. Send your loving acceptance to all beings. I believe the energy of 2012 is here to support us to do that in ways that we may not have been able to up to this point.

Enjoy your practice!

Today I’m excited to share a big “AH-HA” moment I had this week during my morning meditation.

Have you ever noticed that Life teaches you just what you need to know when you need to know it? Or have you ever received something you needed at exactly the right moment? It’s easy to think that what you need to know and have are somewhere “way out there” in the distance. In this post, we’ll explore why what you need may be right in front of your nose.

To share this insight, I’d like to tell a brief personal story:

Matt Clarkson and I have been working on a new program about inner clearing. We’ve been at it for close to a year now. I should have known that a program about inner clearing would challenge me to clear out my own “stuff.”

Here’s a few things I’ve discovered:

Because of my more introverted nature and esoteric interests such as meditation, t’ai chi, qigong, and kriya yoga, I’ve often felt like “an outsider.” I’ve developed a belief that “I don’t fit in.” While my inner experiences are vivid for me, I’ve struggled to put them in words to connect with others. This had led me to a further belief that “I’m not good at communicating in social situations.”

When I believe those things, I feel sad and inadequate. To protect my vulnerability, I notice myself getting angry. This can lead me to behave arrogantly and argumentatively. When others “don’t get what I’m saying” I can get self-righteous and think that my experience is “right” and they are being “superficial.” However, mostly, I keep these feelings inside, because that’s not how I want to be and, well, because I’m a little more introverted than most.

Now, I’m not proud of this self-righteous pattern, nor does it do me or anyone else any good. It creates interpersonal distance and sets the stage for conflict.

In creating this new program, Matt and I have had a few tense moments because of my tendency to “want to say things my way.” He “nudges” me to keep rewriting to express these inner processes in a way that really connects to our readers. That’s exactly what I need and it pushes my buttons about “not fitting in” and “not being able to express what’s important to me in a way that others get it.”

Anyway, this week during meditation I had a major “AHA” about this whole thing. It came crystal clear to me in a way that it never had before. I was able to see this self-righteous pattern, and the beliefs, feelings, and behaviors that support it, in a way that made me firmly decide “not to do that anymore.” In that moment, the pattern seemed to dissolve. I felt lighter, freer, and clearer than ever. I realized that effectively sharing inner practices is a real challenge for me and it’s a challenge that I want to master.

Life is a mirror. It puts your inner world out in front of you so you can discover “who you are” and “what you are here to do.” What we experience “out in the world” is related to what we are doing inside—what we are thinking, feeling, and believing. This is a way Life teaches us.

So the question is:

What is Life showing you about yourself right now?

In other words, what do your current experiences tell you about what you are thinking, feeling, and believing?

I’d love to hear your experiences with this insight in the Comments below.

The holidays are supposed to be our happiest time of the year, right? How come so many find it to be the most stressful and anxious, if not depressing time? Maybe it’s our expectations and how we think about this time of year that makes it that way. In this post, we’ll look at two things you can do to handle holiday stress.

I have several clients who are psychotherapists and they tell me that their schedules fill up this time of year. What is it about the holidays that create so much overwhelm? First, I think it has a lot to do with our expectations about what we think we should be doing. We may feel pressured to attend every holiday event we’re invited to, while still attending to our work, and meeting family expectations of what the holidays should be like.

So, a first thing to do to keep our mental health is to step back and prioritize what is actually important versus what we feel pressured to do. Ask yourself what the holidays really mean for you or what you would like them to mean and how you can best keep to that spirit. Then, give yourself permission to let go of what doesn’t fit with that. For example, perhaps not every party is essential. Maybe good thoughts, well wishes, and kind words and actions are more important than piles of presents. Perhaps time with those you love takes precedence over work.

Ask yourself what is your top priority and attend to that above less essential things. When you step back, reflect, assess, and prioritize, you’ll gain a little mental space to let go of unrealistic or inauthentic expectations. You’ll be more able to say, “This is what is most important to me and this is what I am doing to take care of that.”

A second thing that often happens at this time of year is that we let go of our usual self-care practices, such as eating well, exercising, meditating, taking quiet time, and so on. At a time when you need these routines the most, you may put them off and let them go. You might say, “I’ll get back to that after the New Year.”

I encourage you to make a special effort to stay with your self-care through the holidays. You may abbreviate or modify your routines, but don’t let them go altogether. Eating well, exercising, meditating, and taking a little quiet time will go a long way toward helping you handle holiday stress and be at your best. Instead of waiting for a New Year’s Resolution, make a Holiday Resolution. Have a self-care plan that includes what you’ll eat and won’t eat, when you’ll exercise, and how you’ll take a little time to relax, unwind, and stay connected to your Core, those you love, and your Source.

After all, isn’t the heart of our holidays about honoring and prioritizing those essential connections?

Whatever you’d like the holidays to mean for you, make that a top priority this holiday season.

Enjoy!

Do you believe that life on Earth is a competitive struggle for survival won by the strongest and fittest? What if this idea was just not supported by scientific evidence? What difference would it make if that was incorrect? In this post, we’ll explore what a huge difference that would make in our world.

Whether we’re aware of it or not, our dominant cultural worldview has accepted substantial elements of Darwin’s theories. They form the unquestioned foundation for our economics, our politics, and our view of what is real and possible for each of us. We rarely wonder if our obsession with competition actually brings out the best. We revere beyond reason the ones who dominate and come out on top and reward them out of proportion to the rest.

However, there are some dire consequences of that mindset. The Darwinian mindset (that, by the way, even Darwin questioned) has led to supremacist movements and practices of exploitation. It has led us to war upon war. It has caused us to lose our sense for the importance of every member of our planetary ecosystem. We are stamping out diversity because we fail to appreciate that it is cooperation amongst each and every one of us that is the surest recipe for not only surviving but for thriving.

In fact, science is beginning to back up the idea that cooperation, not competition, is the secret to the most successful individuals and organizations. Cooperation and diversity are two essential principles for long-term success. What a different world we would live in if these were given a dominant place in our consciousness. What would our world be like if we judged our decisions and actions by the measure of these twin principles?

That doesn’t mean that we throw out competition, but that we see it and use it within the context of what is likely even more important.

What would it be like if we asked ourselves if our thoughts, feelings, and actions supported and promoted cooperation and diversity at least as much as competition and dominance of the “best, strongest, and fittest?” My sense is that we’d usher in a whole new post-Darwinian age of peace and prosperity. We’d be much more conscious of the unique talents and gifts that each and every one of us bring to the table and we’d join our resources together to go way beyond what human beings have accomplished up to this point. We’d realize that we all win when we view every member of our planetary community as an essential part of the whole.

If 2012 can indeed be a turning point for us all, I believe it will begin with a new emphasis on cooperation and diversity. We are One and we are many. Only together will we thrive.
