We’re very happy to finally present one of the most frequently requested features in MindMeister: the ability to select multiple topics at once, and apply formats, icons and other information to them in bulk.
This feature is now available to all users and helps to bring the MindMeister experience even closer to that of a desktop application.

When building the feature we’ve tried out a lot of common use cases and tried to make it as versatile as possible. For that purpose we’ve implemented a number of key shortcuts for selecting topics that should make formatting your maps a breeze:

Press <kbd>SHIFT</kbd> to select a range of nodes with the same parent

Press <kbd>⌘</kbd> to select multiple single nodes

Press <kbd>⌘</kbd> + <kbd>A</kbd> to select all nodes

Press <kbd>⌘</kbd>-<kbd>←</kbd>, <kbd>⌘</kbd>-<kbd>→</kbd> to select the next level left / right

Of course, multi-selection also works with drag & drop and other common operations, such as Cut, Copy and Delete. Let us know what you think of it, and happy mind mapping!

We’re proud to announce a new feature available to all users: map templates. When creating a new map, you’ll now be able to select from a number of predefined templates, covering many popular use cases of mind mapping.

These templates provide a skeleton for your mind map, containing a pre-defined structure, icons, images, and notes, to kick-start your brainstorming or structuring efforts. They’ll also help you find more usages for your MindMeister account, ultimately making you more efficient and productive.

Selecting Templates

The initial popover just shows the six most frequently used map templates, as well as your recent templates.

Clicking the “Browse Template Library” button opens an advanced dialog containing all existing templates in categories. This dialog will also let you preview the templates by clicking on the small magnifier icon, so you get an idea of its content before creating a new map.

Submit your own templates

So far, we have about 35 categorized templates which have been based on popular mapping templates or hand crafted by ourselves and a number of mind mapping enthusiasts in our environment. However, our future goal is to tap the vast knowledge and experience of you, our users, to be able to provide the best quality mind map templates in our apps. We’ll therefore be rolling out a template submission feature within MindMeister, complete with approval, rating and recognition options.

Until then, however, please feel free to share any interesting templates from your personal use with templates@mindmeister.com. We’ll review each and every one of these, and include the best ones in MindMeister. Enjoy!

MindMeister is now available in presentation mode!

We’ve spoken to quite a number of you, working in various fields from education, startups, SMB’s, and Fortune 500’s, and many came back with very similar responses in what they wanted from a MindMeister presentation tool. Some focused on remote, user-to-user methods, while others were looking for a tool they could use at public speaking engagements. Both sides had very valid arguments, and ultimately we decided to serve both camps and offer two unique methods of presentation: Online and Screen modes.

Starting Presentation Mode

To get started with the presentation mode:

Click on the map actions icon located in the footer of your active map

Click on “Start Presentation”

You can exit the presentation mode at any time by click on the Stop button in the presentation popover located in the top left corner of your map

Online Presentation Mode

This is a favorite of our beta teams that are remote managing workers from around the globe. Of all the feedback we received, one comment in particular stood out, “MindMeister is a great tool to convey and present information, but in collaboration mode, it’s easy to get lost in all the noise.” To solve this issue, we created the Online Presentation Mode.

This method of presenting allows you the moderator to take over the screens of other collaborators and displays all of your actions, and your actions only, to the screens of those in your session. If you make a change to node A, your group will see it; open a node here, and it’s opened around the world. All collaborators will see your changes, but are unable to alter or add to it. We’ve found that this is particularly useful when presenting a large amount of data, and want your audience to absorb it completely before adding/collaborating.

To access the Online Presentation Mode:

Expand the Presentation popover

Click on the dropdown arrow to reveal presentation modes

Click the Online Presentation button

Screen Presentation Mode

Public speakers are sure to be delighted by our Screen Presentation mode, as MindMeister is now a full process tool, allowing ideas to be sketched, refined, and then presented without ever having to leave the app or access outside material.

Our Screen Presentation mode allows presenters three unique opportunities:

Present in full screen mode

Open topics on selection

Center topics on selection

By checking the “Present in full screen mode” you’ll hide the MindMeister header, footer and sidebar elements. To take full advantage of this feature, we recommend you full screen your browser as well.

Selecting “Open topics on selection” will trigger closed branches to open when they are selected. Presenters will appreciate the ability to navigate their MindMeister based presentation with no need for a mouse, as keyboard commands allow for a smooth and speedy navigation of maps.

To drill down even further, and pull the audiences’ attention to your highlighted node, we’ve also included a “Center topics on selection” option that will arrange your mind map according to your selection.

Please note: While in Online Presentation mode, any collaborators will not be able to make any changes to your mind map. Conversely, in Screen Presentation mode, collaborators are able to make changes.

We’re very proud of this new feature, and hope you enjoy it as much as we did developing it. If you’ve got a MindMeister based presentation in the near future, we’d love to hear about it.

Great news for fans of our MindMeister for iPad app! We’ve recently released version 4.1 which packs a number of improvements and requested features into your favorite mobile mind mapping app. If you’re a regular to synching, you’ve already updated to the latest version, but if not, please update your app here.

Based on your outstanding feedback and requests, we’ve focused on a number of usability features and functions that are particularly useful when used in a live mapping / note taking fashion. To put these new features to the “real world” test, all maps that were made for our live mind mapping of the TEDxVienna event were created using only an iPad2, running the pre-release version of 4.1.

What’s New?

Speaking with, and watching a number of you interact with the MindMeister for iPad app, we sought to find a way to make your maps more meaningful, but at the same time keep the speed and usability factor up.

In this release, we’ve focused on a number of these features, and are happy to present:

✔ New auxiliary keyboard: recently used icons, node highlights and quick node creation

Appconomy.com VP and co-founder Steve Guengerich outlines how his quest for local information has exploded into a nation wide resource using MindMeister. Continue reading

Nearly two years ago, when the iPhone 3GS was still the hot new phone and most people thought Androids were some kind of robot, my co-founders and I were starting to seriously consider launching a mobile venture.

Before we launched the venture, however, I had a personal desire to canvas the Austin tech community to see just what people, companies and other mobile assets were already in place or underway. I knew they existed, at places like the Austin Technology Incubator and the University of Texas. But, search as I might, there was no ready list that came up in the online results.

Being the entrepreneur-friendly and highly networked community that Austin is, I was able to pretty quickly identify some key “centers of gravity” for mobile technology in the community. As I started to compile the list, the effort quickly began to shift from identification to principles for organizing the information.

Yes, I wanted the information for myself and my colleagues in our new venture, Appconomy. But, it also seemed that the information would be of greatest value and most current if it could be shared with the rest of the community, at-large.

The organizing principle that emerged was to organize a map of assets into a mobile “scene.” The concept of a “scene” is drawn from a diverse group of thinkers, ranging from best-selling author and researcher Richard Florida to the work of the ATXEquation team of Bijoy Goswami and Heather Mckissick.

By drawing on their work and the Mindmeister-powered model that they used, we started to organize the mobile scene in greater Austin. Obviously, we weren’t the only ones that needed the information, because word spread quickly.

As we made the first version of the Mindmeister wikimap available for Austin, more people created their own accounts and added people, events, companies, and other scene assets. Knowing that Austin wasn’t unique in the explosion of mobile ventures, we invested in starting similar scene maps for other cities, as an attraction to the thought leadership blog Appconomy produced.

This required a shift to a multi-user subscription to MindMeister, so that we could have multiple team members building maps. To date, we’ve launched mindmaps for mobile scenes in thirteen communities across the US, with seven more identified to be produced.

While the number of nodes any one map can make it a bit cumbersome, the mobile phone and tablet MindMeister apps have further enhanced the value of the mobile scenes. And, the intuitive user interface, universal network convention, and radiating branches out from the core of each map, makes MindMeister an easy sell.

It’s been a great tool for Appconomy, helping make our local tech community stronger and helping extend our company’s brand around the country.

Steve is a VP and co-founder of Appconomy, Inc. which provides a platform of services, called the AppWallet, that makes it easier and more affordable for large brands and merchants to make money with their mobile apps.

In addition, Steve is a frequent speaker at industry events, an author/producer of nine books and dozens of articles, and an adjunct professor at St. Edwards University. For more information, visit his personal website: guengerich.com

The Sourcing Ninja, Ken Hew provides practical and tactical advice on using mind maps in the Recruitment and Sourcing industry. Continue reading

Since we already know how great a tool mind mapping can be for brainstorming and group work and in other ways for organizing your life, I thought I’d share with the community how I use MindMeister in my job as a Sourcer. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Sourcing is a specific sect of the recruitment function. It blurs the line between recruitment, competitive intelligence, PR and marketing. What I essentially do is go out into the market to find hard to find people…

The primary reason I utilize mind maps in my everyday job is to visually represent my search strategies. It helps me keep track of my searches, coordinate the efforts of my team and keeps me organized. So without further ado…

I break my first level nodes into:

Search Strategy

Search Terms

Working Node

Target Organization

Conferences

Resources Folder

News Articles

Other Resources

Search Strategy

This is really the crux of my map, kind of like my HQ. It’s my road map and default node I refer to when I’ve run out of sources to peruse or simply find myself lost in the search (and believe me, sourcers often do so). I normally start by listing all the search related points from the brief I take with the client about the position we’re sourcing for – potential target organizations, conferences, workshops, maybe even specific people for which to use as a benchmark.

As I explore these sources and come up with other avenues of approach to find suitable people, I throw them into a new node so I don’t forget, ensuring that I have enough information to pick up the thread at a later stage (e.g. a link to the search string, or adding notes).

Search Terms

Keywords and Alternative Job titles. Two of the most useful sources that I use in my search again and again and again… I build a list and ensure that I keep adding to it or culling it as my research grows deeper.

Working Node

This is actually something I’ve implemented recently into my maps. Back when I was working solo, I could get away with just plugging away at whatever sources tickled my fancy that day or hour… Now that I’m working in a team environment, we needed to find a way to divvy up the workload without stepping on each other’s toes.

Eventually we settled on this method – as we were working on a particular node, we move it to our “Working Node” so the other team member knows not to work on those. In addition, we can add particular sources to our own “Working Node” if we wanted to personally explore it or if we had a unique angle on how to best peruse it.

Note that I utilize MindMeister’s task management system, specifically the Completion Icons (the little check boxes) to indicate what stage I’m at with examining the source or if I’ve completed it.

Target Organization

Now we’re getting into the nitty gritty side of things. This node maps out the target list from which to <del datetime="2011-11-04T12:20:38+00:00">headhunt</del> focus on. I tend to break mine down by location because I find it’s easier to manage.

I also categorize them in themes first like: Commercial, Government, NGO, etc. but it depends on what works best for you and the particular search you’re working on.

Conferences

Speakers, keynotes, workshop facilitators, distinguished lecturer, residing chairs, attendees. What more can you leverage from these places? Here I list the biggest and most relevant conferences at which the people I’m sourcing for gather. Of course I don’t limit this to conferences – symposiums, events, meet-up groups, summits all have a home under this node.

Resources Folder

Another recent addition to my maps since leading sourcing campaigns involving a sourcing team. The resources folder is for all those ‘one off’ documents you might find that you’ve saved during your search, like presentation slides, random attendee lists, technical papers, event flyers, or summaries. It’s a quick and easy way for you to keep track of and manage these sources once you’ve examined them.

I tend to bold or use additional icons to indicate sources I should pay closer attention to when exploring.

News Articles & Other Resources

Pretty much the “Others” pile you invariably get when trying to organise anything. The home for all those “other” sources that don’t fit into any of the above categories.

Hopefully this gives you an insight on how I use mind maps for sourcing. I don’t claim that this method is necessarily the best way for managing your search, however I suspect it would to an extent; depending on the types of searches you perform. This system seems to work well for me.

The transition from working solo on projects to a team effort has certainly been made possible with the ability for multiple users to collaborate on a single map in real time. For us Oceanic users who are somewhat further from the MindMeister servers in Frankfurt, Germany, I’ve noticed a marked increase in functionality when collaborating on maps with multiple users with the release of MindMeister 6.

Ken Hew is the Director of Quest Research, a Passive Talent sourcing firm based in Sydney, Australia. Having had a life-long love affair with computers since he was eight, an innate sense of curiosity, and a strong interest in people, he has always had a natural affinity towards research and sourcing.

Still an active sourcing practitioner, he takes a systems approach to conducting search and emphasizes the need to harness both Internet research and phone-based sourcing. Ken blogs at sourcingninja.net.

TEDx events are simply awesome. Based on the simple premise of “Ideas worth spreading,” TEDx events embody all that is great about the global TED events, and break them down to a community focused implementation. At the numerous TEDx events I’ve had the pleasure of attending, I often leave them with the question in mind, “Which was better – the speakers I heard today, or the people I met during the breaks and social activities?” The way I see it, these events are a win/win/win situation.

I’ve seen TEDx events range from intimate settings of less than 100 people in the audience, all the way through to major exhibition halls and theatres playing host to TEDx events, most often selling out weeks before the event takes place. The ability to pack venues like these speaks to the power of the concept itself. However, there are inevitably those that would like to attend, but either can’t make the event, or simply didn’t get a ticket in time.

To solve this quandary, for the past two years MindMeister has been live mind mapping local TEDx events, as well as working with our Dutch partners World of Minds on covering TEDx events in The Netherlands. Live mind mapping events provide two key values:

Allowing participants that couldn’t gain entry a structured, easy to follow visualization of key points of a TEDx speakers’ talk.

Providing a living archive of the event, accessible as a reference for years to come after the final talk has been given.

To date, our live mind mapping event maps have received over a quarter million views, and continue to rank high in our analytics, proving that users from around the world are not only tuning in on the day of the event, but coming back to draw references from these mind maps.

To this end, we’re very proud to be a supporter of the TEDxVienna 2011 event, and will be providing live mind mapping all day. You can find our collection of TEDxVienna 2011 live mind maps here.

The schedule of confirmed speakers includes:

Robert Trappl – Head of the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Professor Emeritus of Medical Cybernetics and Artifcial Intelligence at the Center for Brain Research at the Medical University of Vienna.

Alexander Oswald – Head of Marketing at Nokia, covering several countries, including Switzerland, Cyprus, Israel and of course Austria.

Klaus Stadlmann: In 2008 Klaus majored in industrial engineering at the TU Vienna. His degree thesis: “the development of an orthosis used in the supporting and measuring of a torque path of the ankle during rehabilitation” received special honors. He’s also part of the team that’s developed the world’s smallest 3D printer.

Corinna Milborn: An Austrian political scientist and journalist. In her early career, she acted as expert in globalisation issues and spokesperson for the WWF. Former Editor in Chief at the human rights magazine Liga and political editor at the news magazineFormat, Mrs. Milborn is since 2010 Deputy Editor in Chief at News and host of the TV-talkshow “Club2” at the Austrian Public Television Network.

Florian Brody: Florian Brody has extensive experience in marketing for start-ups and currently serves as head of marketing for Cimbal Inc. a company developing a mobile payment solution. He actively promotes to collaboration between Austria and the Silicon Valley and has initiated an incubator for Austrian companies.

Making their very first public appearance, the Table Connect Team will be on hand to do a live demonstration of their larger-than-life Table Connect for iPhone project. Think I can get them to demo MindMeister on this huge device?

I also live mind mapped last year’s TEDxVienna event, and will be located up in the tech booth high above the audience with a direct audio line, and multiple television monitors. It’s not the most “in the moment” seat in the house, (row 3, seat 12, if you please) but it sure is the most sensatory. If you’re at the event, swing by and say hi. If you’re following for afar, you can always reach me directly @MountainDan or @MindMeister.

For a first outing, Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook had a tricky situation on his hands. When the traditional June WWDC conference rolled around sans iPhone announcement, the tech world was taken aback, and if the speculation mill wasn’t already in full swing, this lack of announcement put it into overdrive. A quick scan of the rumor RAM brings up; A host of silicon cases coming out of China indicating a radically new design was on it’s way, beautiful renderings of a new device with a gigantic display, slimmed design, and an elongated home button (a feature of the phone that’s not changed since it’s initial launch), and of course, the speculation that Apple might cater to the high end market with a 5, and a lower priced option in the 4.

Instead of a radically new different iPhone, we got the 4S, a phone that looks practically identical to it’s predecessor, but with beefed up internal specs. However, looking at the side-by-side comparisons, as well as where Apple wants to go in the future, indicate that this, in fact, an all-new iPhone.

If you’ve watched Apple’s mobile history, the move to an xS shouldn’t come as a surprise. Sure, we were all waiting with bated breath for Apple to skip the S line, and jump right to 5, but in hindsight, why should we have expected anything other than what Apple has previously done, primarily the iPhone 3GS? Much like the announcement of the 4S, the 3GS looked practically the same, but offered users an improved processor, wireless networking with HSPA, a better camera, and Voice Control. Any of this sounding might familiar?

Having a look at the rundown of iPhone 4S specs, we’re presented with the 2011 version of the 3GS; a (much) faster processor, speedier data networking that now works in more places thanks to both CDMA and GSM hardware, a massive 8MP camera with improved optics, more storage (up to 64GB – wow!), and dramatically improved voice recognition software, aka Siri. Understandably, iPhone 4 users are most likely to react with a resounding, “meh,” whereas previous generation users (I’m still on a 3G!) are over the moon. As a friend of mine put it last night, “If they’d called it the 5, you’d be just as happy.” Which presents a bigger question, “Does the physical design have to change in order to receive a number upgrade from Cupertino?” That question can only be answered when the 5 is introduced to the world. Next June?

So far, we have a beefed up specs sheet, an ever-so-slightly-modified physical case, a new fancy camera and my own personal assistant named Siri. Not exactly stop-the-presses news, as I can point to a handful of Android devices that offer competing, if not better, specs – where’s the LTE? Google Wallet requires NFC, another spec suspiciously missing. But what about those rumors of a high end phone, and a low end phone?

I believe this is where Apple has truly delivered something remarkable. Let’s let Apple CEO Tim Cook set the stage,

“Despite all the success and all of this momentum, the iPhone had a 5 percent share of the worldwide market of handsets. I could have shown you a much larger number if I just showed you smartphones, but that’s not how we look at it. We look at the entire market of handsets because we believe that over time, all handsets become smartphones. This market is 1.5 billion units annually. It’s an enormous opportunity for Apple.”

The very fact that Cook decided to take all handsets into account clearly signals Apple’s future plans. These plans are further demonstrated by the models that Apple will be selling alongside the 4S. Sure, Apple has a long history of dropping the price of last year’s model, but this time around, they’re clearly courting the lower priced market by continuing to offer the 3GS, and this time, it’s free – a first for Apple. Obviously, there’s the clear argument that you could purchase an older iPhone anywhere across the internet for a relatively low price, but the fact that this move comes directly from Cupertino indicates that the company is clearly after not just a slice of the pie, but the entire pie itself. So did Apple deliver with a lower priced/market phone? Absolutely! Offer subject to two-year carrier contract. Some restrictions may apply. Please contact your carrier for more spec….bla bla bla.

On the other side of the coin, while it wasn’t quite the tapered, 4” screen that we’d all been holding our breaths for, Apple’s new flagship, the iPhone 4S 64GB version steps into new territory by offering a top shelf price tag of $399. Personally, I’m not even sure I would need 64GB in my pocket, but that 8MP camera sensor with 1080p full HD video recording capability could eat of a sizable chunk of memory, so perhaps the full monty is in order. Additionally, this newly available plethora of data storage options offers Apple a much higher margin when it comes to the cash register. So did Apple deliver on a high priced/market phone? Yes. But is it enough to get those that previously purchased an iPhone 4 to jump aboard? That remains to be seen.

And speaking of sales…this is where Apple clearly shined yesterday. We could look at the, “iPhone has seen 125% growth year-over-year for iPhone sales,” figures, or that according to a ChangeWave survey, the iPhone enjoys a 70% customer satisfaction rating” (HTC resides in second place at 49%), etc., but that’s looking at the past. By opening up a variety of configurations, Apple has effectively doubled their offerings from previous sales cycles, now offering users 5 different models to choose from, each with a price point that suits just about every consumer under the sun. Compound these pricing options with Apple’s announcement of new partnerships with carriers including Sprint in the U.S. and KDDI in Japan, and let’s stand back and watch the numbers speak for themselves.

So was this the earth-shattering event we’d all hoped for? Did Apple change the game again? Not so much. As noted above, there are a number of handsets that can measure up, and actually beat the iPhone 4S in a specs race. However, it’s clear that with the upcoming iCloud, iOS5, and iMessage launches, Apple is banking on creating the “Entire Experience” for end users. By providing a feature rich back end complete with a number of Friends, Family, and Community based hooks, both long time iPhone owners, and an entirely new market should, in Apple’s opinion, now have even further reason to join the party in the iCloud that Apple is creating.

Thoughts on the new iPhone 4S? Are you a 3G or 3GS owner that’s chomping at the bit? Are you an iPhone 4 owner that would rather hold off until the next version? Let us hear it!
