They are loaded with anti-nutrients or so called natural toxins. These anti-nutrients are actually inhibitors that obstruct the secretion of enzymes needed for protein digestion and are not disabled through ordinary cooking. Well, this is very dangerous and it can lead to extensive gastric disease and chronic deficiencies in amino acid intake, causing serious pancreatic damage and even cancer

Most of the soybeans are GMO and they are loaded with harmful pesticides

They contain hemaglutinitis, which can lead to blood-clotting

They contain high amounts of goitrogens, which can lead to decreased thyroid function

Soy beans contain phytates, which obstruct the absorption of minerals, such as: calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium via healthylifetricks.com

The issue has gotten so bad that Russia just last month banned all imports of U.S. soybeans and corn due to microbial and GMO contamination.

“Restrictions will be imposed on imports starting from February 15,” Assistant Director of the Rosselkhoznadzor, Alexey Alekseenko, said Thursday, adding that “they (the US) have to establish a system to ensure safety of products imported to Russia.”

According to the regulator, the corn imported from the US is often infected with dry rot of maize. In addition, according to the Russian watchdog, corn can be used for transgenic crops in Russia. The potential damage from import and spread of quarantinable objects on the territory of Russia is estimated at 10-15 bln rubles ($126 mln-189 mln) annually.

The Hazards of Soy

In addition to being harmful to our bodies, soy production is harmful to the planet and to livestock who eat it as well. Almost all soybeans grown today are genetically modified and “Round-up ready.” They contain a gene that allows them to be directly sprayed with pesticides without dying.

There is some evidence that this gene can mutate and create a pesticide-like toxin in the body.

Animals who are fed soy can suffer many of the same health consequences as people who consume too much soy, and these harmful properties are then passed on in their meat.

John Robbins reports on a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. The study, conducted in Hawaii by Lon White, M.D., and his associates, was part of the Honolulu Heart Study. Looking at the diets and the risk of dementia of Japanese men residing in Hawaii, the study found that men who ate the most tofu during their mid-40s to mid-60s were more likely to have dementia and Alzheimer’s as they grew older.

The correlation between tofu and cognitive decline was strong, and could not be explained by confounding factors like age, education, and obesity. In this study, men who had eaten two or more servings of tofu per week in midlife were 2.4 times as likely as men who rarely or never ate tofu to become senile or forgetful by old age. Even the wives of men who ate tofu showed more signs of dementia. White and the other researchers said the brains of the tofu-eaters seemed to have aged more rapidly. By the time the men reached their 80s and 90s, the tofu-eater’s brains seemed to be the equivalent of non-tofu eater’s brains that were five years older.

Concluding Thoughts:

What was once considered a super healthy food has certainly taken a turn for the worse. Having been an avid consumer of soy based products has forced me to find better alternatives. It’s scary to think of the impact food related processing can do to a natural substance.

Whether you get your jolt of energy from a cup of coffee or tea, or an energy drink doesn’t matter. But what about caffeine as a memory booster? Does it work?

Up until now there has only been speculation. While we may think that it works for our memory where is the proof? Certainly thousands of students each semester cramming for exams would tell you that it is a wonder drug. However, the fact is that there has been no proof until now.

Caffeine As A Memory Booster – The Proof

Recently a study published in the Journal of Nature Neuroscience gives us the evidence we have been waiting for.

<!––nextpage––>

A research team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland – led by Dr. Yassa – found that caffeine enhances certain memories for at least a day after they were formed. via Caffeine Can Improve Your Memory – Business Insider

A group of 73 volunteers were asked to look at a variety of images. Half the group was then given 200mg of caffeine and the other half a placebo. The following day they were shown images, some the same and some different, to distinguish recall and memory. While both groups did well, it was the group who had been given the caffeine that “were much sharper at identifying the similar items in the lineup” (Presse, 2014).

The test sought to discern the effect of caffeine on the hippocampus, a part of the brain that distinguishes between patterns — requiring both short- and long-term memory. via Caffeine Can Improve Your Memory – Business Insider

Here are some reactions from other medical professionals to the study…

Dr. Ashok Jansari, School of Psychology University of London

“This research shows that caffeine is better than placebo for enhancing memory in certain situations…[however] there is a dose-dependent effect, it tails off after doses of 200mg so it may well not be the case that ‘more is better’. I would definitely not advise that people start taking in as much caffeine as possible since in terms of memory anything above 200mg may not help much and if you take too much caffeine there could be negative consequences for the body”. via expert reaction to impact of caffeine on memory | Science Media …

Dr. Anders Sandberg, Future of Humanity Institute, University of Oxford

“The paper…looks at whether caffeine can improve long-term memory, in particular memory consolidation…that caffeine can help learning to some extent has been known for a long time, but whether it does that simply by perking up the user (making the initial attention or encoding better) or also by effects on the consolidation was not known. The paper demonstrates that giving caffeine after seeing images does improve recognition of them 24 hours later, supporting the idea that it helps the brain consolidate the learning…” via expert reaction to impact of caffeine on memory | Science Media …

More About Caffeine As A Memory Booster

Studies on the pros and cons of caffeine consumption are nothing new, but this research represents a departure from the usual methodology, where subjects are given caffeine before the study sessions. via Caffeine can enhance memory, new research suggests – Gizmag

However, while this study certainly has validity it does not take into consideration the negative effects associated with caffeine. While Dr. Yassa did clearly indicate that higher amounts of caffeine are not correlated with improved memory, it still does not address the negative health effects and risks involved. These need to be considered before starting any type of caffeine regime for memory improvement.

The truth is that there are millions of people that suffer from caffeine sensitivity and there are known effects like irritability, shakes and jitters, headaches, nausea, depression, etc. that are all associated at varying doses.

So the question we need to be asking is which is the lesser evil? Do we improve memory at the cost of other health concerns. This is certainly a very personal decision and one that should be considered carefully.

We can sum it up with these words from the University of Oxford…

“…there is general consensus that caffeine can be seen as an enhancer for specific functions like mood, attention, concentration and reaction time. These enhancement effects have been shown in studies with the general set-up that participants first took caffeine and then did a performance task. This matches our everyday representation of “wise” caffeine use: if I wanted to enhance my performance with caffeine, I’d take immediately before the “critical situation”, for example an exam. via Caffeine as memory enhancer – Practical Ethics – University of Oxford

So there you have it. The number one substance used worldwide, as well as, the favoured study buddy for exams.

We often attribute memory loss with aging, but there are a number of memory disorders that can be at play. Know the difference and make sure that if you are experiencing any type of memory loss that you get checked out by your doctor. This article examines 5 diseases that affect memory loss.

Diseases That Affect Memory Loss

1. Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition that adversely affects cognitive functioning. With about 44.4 million people worldwide displaying some type of dementia disease, Alzheimer’s is the most common disease of its type. While the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease can vary, some of the more common ones include a deterioration of reasoning and thinking skills as well as difficulty remembering. via DDT increases risk of Alzheimer’s disease – Natural News

In Alzheimer’s disease, amyloid beta proteins accumulate in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients and produce inflammation. This inflammation leads to certain gene modifications that interrupt the functioning of synapses in the brain, leading to memory loss. via Rat Study Finds Critical Component in Alzheimer’s Memory Loss …

2. Vascular Dementia

Dementia, in and of itself is not a disease, but rather a term used to describe a host of diseases that affect memory loss. However, for our purposes here we will separate Alzheimer’s and Dementia with the term dementia referring to vascular dementia.

Dementia is characterized by a progressive deterioration of thinking abilities and memory. There are certain features that represent normal age progressing but forgetting how to do certain tasks, unable to learn new things and not recalling information that is needed on daily basis is a matter of concern. via Combating Dangerous Memory Disorders | Fitness Republic

In addition to a loss of memory and impaired cognition there can also be a loss of physical coordination. The symptoms are directly indicative of the part of the brain that is affected by a loss of nerve cells or more commonly referred to as atrophy of the brain.

“Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. It is caused by problems in the supply of blood to the brain.” (Alzheimer’s Society, 2014).

Symptoms:

problems with speed of thinking, concentration and communication

depression and anxiety accompanying the dementia

symptoms of stroke, such as physical weakness or paralysis

memory problems (although this may not be the first symptom)

seizures

periods of severe (acute) confusion.
via What Is Vascular Dementia?

3. Parkinson’s Disease

A lot of research is still needed to understand the relationship between Parkinson’s disease and memory. Recently a team of research in Finland found that “free recall memory deficits common even in early stages of Parkinson’s disease are related to structural changes in the brain, specifically parietal cortical gray matter volume” (IOS Press, 2014).

“This study is one of the first to link a discrete area of the brain to a cognitive deficit in people at an early stage of PD, comments lead investigator Ulla Ellfolk, Department of Psychology and Logopedics of Abo Akademi University, and the Division of Clinical Neurosciences, Turku University Hospital, Turku, Finland. “Clinical studies have shown that free recall is more strongly affected than language, performance on simple attention tasks, and visuospatial functioning in newly diagnosed PD patients.” via Parietal gray matter volume changes may be associated with early …

4. Depression

Every single person at some point and time may feel depressed. Most often this is brought on by challenges or hardships in ones life rather than an association to diseases that affect memory loss. However, they are usually able to get through this time quite easily whereas someone who has clinical depression is not. They have changes that occur in the brain, behaviors that directly impact their daily functioning that occur for a prolonged period of time. Depression is extremely common and affects millions of people around the world.

Depressive illnesses are disorders of the brain. Brain-imaging technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have shown that the brains of people who have depression look different than those of people without depression. The parts of the brain involved in mood, thinking, sleep, appetite, and behavior appear different. But these images do not reveal why the depression has occurred. They also cannot be used to diagnose depression.via What Is Depression?

Depression is frequently associated with memory problems, most likely because depression arises from abnormal functioning of brain areas that are also very important for memory. It’s not uncommon for mild memory problems to persist for a while after people have otherwise responded to treatment and are doing better. As you intimate, medications also can adversely affect memory, especially in older people, but this is less likely in your husband’s case because his memory has deteriorated without medication changes. via Can Depression Cause Memory Loss?

5. Celiac Disease

Many people do not understand the complexity and prevalence of celiac disease. Often confused with a wheat tolerance or allergy, which could not be further from the truth. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease whereby the body confuses the gluten protein as a threat and begins to engage in combat.

Celiac disease, or more specifically gluten, can cause depression, anxiety, and even brain disorders. As well, as making the individual more susceptible to a host of other medical conditions. Both individuals with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity may be prone to gluten related memory loss.

The intestinal wall become porous allowing “undigested food, toxins and bacteria into the bloodstream where they trigger inflammation throughout the body and brain…also, certain harmful bacteria that travel through a leaky gut into the bloodstream release toxic molecules (lipopolysaccharides) that are linked to depression and various psychiatric disorders” (Herbold, 2014).

Or forget why you went from one room to another? Or what about what you had for dinner last night? These are all signs of short term memory loss and depending on the circumstance can effect each and everyone of us. Some will even attest that this is normal. But when does it become problematic? When is it no longer normal? And how much of our problem is related to the drugs that we are taking. It’s important that you know the facts about drugs and memory loss so that you can make the right choices for your health.

Causes of Memory Loss

There are a number of factors that can cause memory loss some of which include direct damage to the brain through injury or disease, drug and alcohol use, low levels of vitamin B12, or lifestyle attributors like prolonged stress and not getting enough sleep. Moreover, certain prescription drugs can directly impact memory.

For many years, we assumed that as we aged we would lose nerve cells and thus our memory would deteriorate. However, today we know that this is not accurate. While we are not able to replace nerve cells in the same way that we can other cells in our body there is some replication that can happen.

It turns out, that there are a small number of very specialized cells in mammalian brains called NEURONAL STEM CELLS that can actually replace the dead neurons (it still is not a good idea to damage your cells with drugs or alcohol though!). via Why Nerve Cells Can’t Reproduce?

Drugs and Memory Loss

According to the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) there are 10 different categories of “drugs that may cause memory loss”. For our purposes here we will further explore the relationship between statin drugs and memory. However, if you are taking any one of these and experiencing memory loss it is important that you discuss this with your health care practitioner.

1. Antianxiety drugs

2. Cholesterol drugs

3. Antiseizure drugs

4. Antidepressant drugs

5. Narcotic painkillers

6. Parkinson’s drugs

7. Hypertension drugs

8. Sleeping aids

9. Incontinence drugs

10. Antihistamines

via 10 Drugs That May Cause Memory Loss

Statins and Memory Loss

Statins, or more commonly referred to as cholesterol drugs, have recieved a lot of media attention of late due to a suspected connection to this drug and memory loss.

Statins are among the most widely prescribed drugs in the world and used by roughly 20 million Americans to reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke. via Muscle Aches From Statins? Drug Interactions May Play a Role – Well

How they can cause memory loss: Drugs that lower blood levels of cholesterol may impair memory and other mental processes by depleting brain levels of cholesterol as well. In the brain, these lipids are vital to the formation of connections between nerve cells — the links underlying memory and learning. (The brain, in fact, contains a quarter of the body’s cholesterol.) via 10 Drugs That May Cause Memory Loss

While we know this to be true, there has been a lot of controversy and confusion. But the bigger question really is whether or not this is more related to monetary gain and business rather than medicine. If 20 million people are taking a drug that can affect memory loss imagine what would happen to the manufacturers and distributors if they stopped. That is certainly not to say that this drug does not have its benefits, but there are other questions that need to be considered.

Controversy and Confusion

As with any drug there are always side effects and risks. It is therefore up to the patient and health care practitioner to determine whether or not those risks out weigh the benefits. However, enough concern about this link called the government to action.

Confusion and concern among patients arose last year after stories surfaced about statin takers who said that their mental sharpness declined after starting the drug. Following these reports, the FDA mandated that labeling on statins must include information about possible links between statin use and memory loss. via Statins Don’t Cause Memory Loss, Study Reaffirms — Health Hub …

After the government had ordered this labeling some reputable researchers began reviewing studies to find some type of evidence to substantiate this claim. The researchers at Johns Hopkins University reviewed 12 studies claiming that there was no evidence and even went as far as saying that “long term stain use can have a protective effect on memory and cognition” (The Beating Edge Team, 2013).

As their work involved reviewing studies only, we cannot say for certain that this connection between statin drugs and memory loss does not exist. More empirical research needs to be done.

Final Thoughts About Drugs and Memory Loss

Whether or not you are experiencing memory loss you still need to be aware of the risks of any medications that you are taking. This includes not only prescription drugs, but as well over the counter medications. All drugs have risks and many with significant side effects and interactions. Make sure that you talk to your doctor. And if memory is an issue, then review your medications with your doctor to ensure that this is not the cause.

Do you get to the store and forget half the things you need? Do you end a conversation with a friend and wonder what you just talked about? These are all common tell tale signs that your memory needs a little bit of a boost. Read on and discover how to improve memory with these simple techniques.

How To Improve Memory

1. Meditate Regularly

For some people this may sound like a strange tactic or strategy. Mostly because through mainstream education we are really not taught how to meditate and the benefits of it. Therefore, it is more the unknowns that make us question it. However, there is research that shows clear evidence of how meditation can help “improve focus, concentration, creativity, and learning and reasoning” (Smith & Robinson, 2013).

Meditation works its “magic” by changing the actual brain. Brain images show that regular meditators have more activity in the left prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain associated with feelings of joy and equanimity. Meditation also increases the thickness of the cerebral cortex and encourages more connections between brain cells—all of which increases mental sharpness and memory ability. via How To Improve Your Memory

2. Have A Glass Of Wine

We’ve been hearing for some time now about the benefits of resveratrol. For those that may not be familiar with this term. Resveratrol is a flavonoid that is found in red wine. It is said to “protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease by acting as an antioxidant, antimutagen, and anti-inflammatory” (Farlex, 2013). As it works directly on the blood vessels it too helps with the health of the brain.

A French study that followed almost 4,000 people over the age of 65 found that light drinkers, who consumed up to two glasses of wine a day, were 45 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than nondrinkers. via Top 10 Ways To Improve Your Memory

3. Get Your Daily Fix Of Caffeine

Not only can your morning cup of coffee get you moving, but studies now show us that there are actual memory benefits.

“We’ve always known that caffeine has cognitive-enhancing effects, but its particular effects on strengthening memories and making them resistant to forgetting has never been examined in detail in humans,” said senior author of the paper Michael Yassa, formerly of Johns Hopkins and now the University of California, Irvine. “We report for the first time a specific effect of caffeine on reducing forgetting over 24 hours.” via Caffeine Might Improve Long Term Memory

4. Exercise Your Brain

Just as your body needs exercise so too does your brain. Regular brain exercise forces more oxygen to the brain, which improves memory and overall brain health.

Do crossword puzzles. Read a section of the newspaper that you normally skip. Take alternate routes when driving. Learn to play a musical instrument. Volunteer at a local school or community organization. via Memory Loss: 7 Tips To Improve Your Memory

5. Supplement With Fish Oil

Omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fish oil supplements have piqued great interest. Studies suggest that a higher intake of omega-3 fatty acid from foods such as cold-water fish, plant and nut oils, and English walnuts are strongly linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s. However, thorough studies comparing omega-3s to placebo are needed to prove this memory benefit from supplements. via Fortifying Your Memory With Supplements

6. Clench Your Fist

If you’re having trouble remembering things at work, get a stress ball. The act of clenching your fist, if done correctly, can significantly improve your ability to recall information. Studies show that if you are right-handed, you should make a fist with your right hand before you try to memorize a piece of information. Then when you need to remember it, clench your left hand (the process is reversed for lefties.) Be sure to hold that position for a little while though; the study that discovered this had the participants squeezing for a good 45 seconds before letting go. via 11 Simple Ways To Imrpvoe Your Memory

More On How To Improve Memory

Memory loss affects each and everyone of us in different ways. As we age we naturally lose some of our memory. However, we also have the ability to continually improve our memory and to have a strong healthy mind for years. But you’ve got to work at it. It’s your job to take care of your memory just the same as you take care of your body.

Eating an overall healthy diet is definitely the way to go if you want to ward of disease and aging in general. We have certainly heard of numerous super-foods that have shown to improve Diabetes, Heart Disease, and even some cancers.

Foods like fish, whole wheat, and fruits and vegetables have tons of great nutrients. But what about foods for the brain. What should we be focusing on to keep our memory strong and healthy for years to come.

Well certainly memory boosting nuts and seeds come to mind as a front runner. These little treats are loaded with health benefits.

Memory Boosting Nuts to Add to Your Diet Today

Walnuts,

Almonds

Cashews

Brazil Nuts

Hazelnuts

Peanuts

Vitamin E the Secret Nutrient

Vitamin E is classified as a fat soluble vitamin that serves as an antioxidant. It functions to protect cells from free radical damage. It occurs naturally in foods or can be taken as a supplement.

“Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E…” (Sorgen, 2013) . Add an ounce a day of walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, filberts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seed, and unhydrogenated nut butters such as peanut butter, almond butter, and tahini. via Eat Smart for a Heathier Brain

With such a variety and different forms to choose from it becomes extremely easy to add them to any diet. And the health benefits far supersede just memory. They keep you full longer so you do not have the urge to binge, they are known to help with heart health and cholesterol, and strengthen the immune system.

A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggests that a good intake of vitamin E might help to prevent cognitive decline, particularly in the elderly. Nuts are a great source of vitamin E along with leafy green vegetables, asparagus, olives, seeds, eggs, brown rice and wholegrains. via 10 Foods to Boost Your Brainpower

Walnuts the Creme-de-la-Creme of Memory Boosting Nuts

All nuts and seeds seem to have health benefits, however the walnut appears to stand above the rest.

Adding walnuts to your diet may help boost your memory according to a new Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease report. Researchers found that eating walnuts as part of a Mediterranean diet was associated with better memory and brain function. The antioxidants in walnuts may help counteract age-related cognitive decline and even reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s. via The Brain Boosting Nut

It Even Looks Like a Brain

Both figuratively and literally speaking, walnuts are “brain food”. As Rebecca Wood points out in her New Foods Encyclopedia,”the walnut looks remarkably like the human brain. The thin, outer green husk, which is removed before the walnuts are marketed, is likened to the scalp. The walnut’s hard shell is like a skull. The thin envelope inside, with its paper-like partitions between the two halves of the nut, is like the membrane. The convoluted nut itself represents the human brain’s two hemispheres”. via Research Shows That Seeds and Nuts Are Brain Foods That Can Also Stabilize Your Mood

Even More Nutrients

Zinc

Magnesium

Vitamin B

Arginine

Fiber

Copper

Folic Acid

Potassium

Healthy Fats

While all nuts have a number of nutrients some seem to be just a little better than others.

Cashews, for example, offer your body zinc and magnesium you may not get otherwise. They boost your brain power, so get creative about your cashew consumption and sprinkle them on top of a salad, or spread cashew butter on top of a piece of whole grain toast for a quick snack. via Go Nutty! Health Benefits of Nuts! | Fitness 19

Almonds are high in magnesium, and vitamins E and B, which help boost the immune system. Hazelnuts, cashews, peanuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts and almonds are also rich in arginine, an amino acid that converts into nitric oxide once in the body and basically helps keep blood vessels relaxed and clear. via Go Nuts For Nuts–Health Benefits of Nuts – Green-Mom.com

Although nuts contain some saturated fat, most are rich in monounsaturated fats and are packed with important nutrients. Dietary fiber, magnesium, copper, folic acid, potassium, vitamin E and protective phyto-nutrients are found in nuts, all contributors to cardiovascular health. via Good News about Nuts and Your Health | HealthHub | Brigham and …

Final Thoughts About Memory Boosting Nuts

Nuts are probably one of the easiest healthy foods to eat. They taste great in their natural form so just grab a handful and nibble away. Sprinkle them on your morning cereal or add them to almost any meal. Cashews taste great in a stir fry. The health benefits are enough that they should become a staple to any diet.

The mind needs regular stimulation and exercise to stay strong, healthy, and sharp. Studies have shown that just as little as 10 minutes a day can help. Below are three great resources for free brain games.

1. AARP (American Association of Retired Persons)

This non-government group founded in 1958 caters to people age 50 and over. They are a membership organization that lobbys, advocates, provides information, insurance, just to name a few. You can visit their site directly at www.aarp.com to learn more.

In addition to all of the wonderful things they do, they also provide a number of brain games for free on their website. All of the games are intended to challenge your brain and to get your memory working. Some games are easier than others, while many have various levels that you can progress through.

Here are a few favourites:

Word Search – Simply click and drag your mouse over the word to get points. Just as any word search the words may be found horizontally, vertically or diagonally. It’s lots of fun and you won’t believe how quickly the time flies.

5 Roll – This game is one of the member favourites and you will find it quite often holding the number one position in their ‘Top Games’ list. It’s all about rolling the dice. All you do is roll the dice and get the highest score. However, there is some strategy and skill involved as you have to figure out which dice you should keep.

Daily Crossword – Another favourite is the daily crossword. Just as you would typically see at the back of a newspaper or magazine this digital version has the same appeal.

Eggz – The aim of this game is to get to the top of the wall by matching coloured eggs so they disappear and get out of your way. This game is on a timer so essentially you are racing against the clock. Lots of fun!

Spider Solitaire – This classic card game is beloved by anyone that enjoys solitaire. For those that are not familiar with the rules. Remove all cards from the 10 columns to win the game. Cards are removed if you can form a sequence from King down to Ace of the same suit in one column. Columns are built down by rank.via AARP Brain Games – Spider Solitaire

Click here to access all of their top rated games.

2. Games For The Brain

This website simply offers a number of links to play great brain games.

Some crowd pleasures include:

Dragger – This game involves dragging pieces of a picture to form an image. Very much like a typical puzzle except all the pieces are square so you have to rely completely on matching up the images.

Memocoly – In this brain game you have to remember the flashing colours in the sequence that they appear. You click on the colours as many times as it originally showed to score points.

Rotate – It seems really easy at first, but it can get very tricky. In this game you are given a picture with a number of square pieces that have been rotated the wrong way. You click on the piece to get it to turn clock wise. When you think it is in the right position you leave it. At the end you will see the picture clearly. The parts of the image with strong edges are easy to match, but other parts are quite blurry so you really have to focus to make sure that you have rotated the piece the right way.

Click here to access of the games.

3. Sheppard Software Brain Games

This website categorizes their games so that you can quickly find exactly what you are looking for. Some of the categories include, memory, logic, strategy and so forth. As well, they list their top 5 games so you know which ones people are enjoying the most.

Some of the games include:

Moving Memory – This game is very challenging. You have to click on one of the squares to reveal a piece underneath then you have to find the matching piece with as few moves as possible. But here’s the hard part the board is moving so even when you think you found the matching piece it is hard to find it. Great game, but requires some real patience.

Mouse Trap – Their number one spot goes to this game. Here you have to trap a mouse by building pillars around it so it can’t move. Sounds simple, but not really. You have to try to think of where the mouse might go next and start building the walls. The only problem is that while you may be building on one side the mouse has already gone the other way.

Maze – A great game for anyone of any age. Get the ball through the maze using the arrow keys on the keyboard.

To play any of these games or to visit their entire selection go here http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/braingames/braingames.htm.

More About Free Brain Games

While this list offers games that have been specifically geared towards improving the memory any game that requires strategy can potentially have a positive effect. Moreover, most gaming companies offer a number of games for free or with trial periods. This allows you to test the game to see if it is something that you would like. When looking for games on regular game sites like www.popcap.com or bigfishgames.com you want to look for matching games, puzzles, word games, or any type of solitaire.

Episode #1: Dr. Amen Shares With Dr. Oz How to Unleash The Power Of The Female Brain

What a great episode! Dr. Amen discussed the findings from one of the largest brain imaging studies ever done. Forty six thousand participants, both male and female, were scanned looking at 80 different parts of the brain. The study showed that “females were significantly more active in 70…” (Dr. Amen, 2013).

Because of the increased activity, females often exhibit greater strengths in the areas of: empathy; intuition, or knowing something that is true without knowing exactly why; collaboration, which is why women often make better bosses; self-control, which is the reason why females go to jail dramatically less often than males; and appropriate worry. via Dr. Amen Shares with Dr. Oz How to Unleash the Power of the …

A quick stop at the local drive through for your morning coffee and bagel just are not going to cut it. Our bodies need fuel and our brains need power. We need the best possible brain foods for breakfast. Each day poses its unique challenges and the only way to meet those is to ensure that our brain is ready.

We must be alert, focused, and have the ability to learn new things quickly and easily. We need to eat something that will help tap into our memory database so we can access whatever information is needed. And all of this begins with our food choices first thing in the morning. So what are the best brain foods for breakfast to quickly improve memory and meet the days challenges?

Best Brain Foods for Breakfast

1. Eggs

Eggs are an excellent source of protein, vitamin B2, vitamin E, and the almighty vitamin D. All of these synergistacally improve health and contribute to longer satiety, which means that you will not get as hungry earlier in the day. As well, there is the extra added bonus of not having carb related cravings later in the day. But eggs also contain choline, which is a super memory vitamin. via Breakfast brain-food. | MizFitOnlineMizFitOnline

2. Blueberries

Berries are a rich source of antioxidants, which help mop up the free radicals that cause cell damage in your brain and elsewhere. Many other fruits and veggies are loaded with antioxidants, too: citrus fruits, dark leafy greens, winter squash and pomegranates are some of the best sources. Top your morning cereal with blueberries or blitz them into a smoothie for a double dose of antioxidants). via Best Foods for Your Brain | Devour The Blog: Cooking Channel’s …

3. Protein Powder

The great thing about protein powder is that it can easily be mixed with anything. Add it to your favorite smoothie, pie recipe, cookies, or whatever baked goodies you want. It is definitely a source of brain food for breakfast. There are great recipes online to help you get creative.

Here’s a fun Protein Pumpkin Pie recipe. Just click on the link below…

Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas, or a random autumnal Tuesday, nothing says holiday flavor quite like pumpkin pie! It’s sweet, creamy, and always hits the spot. via Bodybuilding.com – Ask The Protein Powder Chef: Do You Have A …

4. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E, says Pratt, explaining that higher levels of vitamin E correspond with less cognitive decline as you get older. Add an ounce a day of walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, filberts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seed, and unhydrogenated nut butters such as peanut butter, almond butter, and tahini. Raw or roasted doesn’t matter, although if you’re on a sodium-restricted diet, buy unsalted nuts. via Eat Smart for a Healthier Brain

Kids and Breakfast

While we all need to start our day with a healthy breakfast it is even more important for kids. They spend their entire school day learning, which consumes tons of energy and requires adequate fuel. There have been numerous studies done to examine the differences between student grades with groups who consume a healthy breakfast versus those who do not eat anything at all.

One study conducted in Toronto, Canada examined inner city students who regularly came to school without eating breakfast. Teachers had complained of students being tired, lethargic, not able to concentrate, and having difficulty learning. The school provided orange juice for a period of time to see if this one small change would have an impact and it did. So just imagine having a complete nutritious breakfast and the difference that would make.

Suzanne Ahn, a nationally certified family nurse practitioner who works at Grant’s School-Based Health Center, explains: “Your brain uses more glucose than any other organ in the body – that’s what keeps you thinking. Just like a car needs gas, you need food for your brain, or it will not function.” via Brain Food | Grant Magazine

That dip in blood sugar can sometimes release hormones that affect mood and for some children, these hormones seem to affect concentration and memory. The first meal of the day should be be rich in protein, fiber and good carbs, things that will sustain kids all the way till lunch. Foods like oatmeal have slower-burning carbohydrates, sweetened with fresh fruit, will help maintain concentration and attention throughout the morning…for adults too! via Brainfood for Breakfast – Savor Culinary Services
