Microsoft’s mishap is but one of a long string of examples of AI gone wrong. While many larger companies have assembled teams to tackle the ethical problems arising from the massive troves of data they collect, then use to train their machine learning models, progress on this front has hardly been smooth. In the meantime, smaller AI-powered companies that can’t afford teams of individuals are largely winging it.

Enter Singh’s company, Credo AI, a SaaS outfit that’s today taking the wraps off $5.5 million in funding that it has raised from Decibel, Village Global and AI Fund.

The company’s promise is pretty straightforward as she explains it, even as it’s managing the complex. Singh and her current  team of 15 employees have developed a risk framework that companies can use to deploy their AI systems with greater confidence. It’s not so much that the startup’s tech is revolutionary (is our understanding) but rather that Credo addresses what is often a lack of accountability within organizations by giving them a control panel with the tools to manage the risks that their use of AI can introduce otherwise.

“What many companies haven’t really figured out is that there is a lack of common language and alignment on what ‘good’ looks like in AI governance, so organizations are really looking for help with that standardization,” she says.

Credo’s software is not a one-size-fits all offering, Singh notes. Different organizations see different impacts from their models, and even within so-called industry verticals, individual companies often have different objectives. “Fairness is not defined within different sectors,” says Singh, who points as an example to financial services, where much is getting redefined on an ongoing basis by federal banking agencies. “What is fairness for fraud mean? What is fairness for credit underwriting?”

Rather than wait for answers, says Singh, Credo AI works with companies to align on what their own values are, then it offers them the tools to manage accordingly, including to add additional metrics, and different stakeholders. “We want to enable your data science team to collaborate with your compliance team, your executive to collaborate with your machine-earning person, your product manager to collaborate with your risk manager,” says Singh.

Credo AI want to help companies avoid those face-palm moments — or worse.

Certainly, it’s a big market opportunity. According to data published earlier this year by the International Data Corporation (IDC), worldwide revenue for the AI market, including software, hardware, and services, was expected to grow 16.4% year over year in 2021 to $327.5 billion. By 2024, said IDC, the market is expected to break the $500 billion mark.

As companies spend more on AI, they’ll presumably need more help to make sure it’s performing the way they expect and not causing harm. Indeed, if Singh has her way, working with Credo AI will one day serve as a kind of stamp that companies use to advertise their focus on ethical AI.

“If we do our jobs right,” says Singh, “I want anyone who’s building in good AI to be associated with Credo AI. That is certainly our aspiration.”

Today, Apple announced an update to its popular AirPods true wireless earbuds. The new third-generation model features a slightly revamped design that looks more like the higher-end AirPods Pro, with shorter stems and a similar touch-based "force sensor" control scheme built-in. Their charging case takes after the shorter and wider design of the Pro model as well.

The new AirPods retain their usual hard plastic finish and do not have in-ear tips like the AirPods Pro, though Apple says they are now officially IPX4-rated for sweat and water resistance. Apple says the earbuds have six hours of battery life and up to 30 hours when including the charging case. (That's compared to five and 24 hours, respectively, on the second-gen model.) The included case supports MagSafe and wireless charging, though the earbuds do not feature active noise cancellation or a transparency mode like their pricier siblings.

Though the second-gen AirPods were renowned more for their ease of use than their audio quality, Apple says it has updated them with a redesigned driver and an adaptive EQ feature that automatically tunes your music based on the AirPods' fit in your ear. The earbuds will also use Apple's spatial audio tech, which makes audio sound like it is coming from around the user's head. To help with that, the new AirPods support dynamic head tracking like the AirPods Pro and the over-ear AirPods Max. We'll have to get our hands on the new model to see how they perform.

Nearly a year after announcing the first low-end M1 Macs last November, Apple has finally unveiled an update for its higher-end laptops. The newly announced 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models have HDMI ports, but they have a limitation that could be frustrating for many users over the long term, according to Apple's specs page for both machines and as noted by Paul Haddad on Twitter.

The page says the HDMI port has "support for one display with up to 4K resolution at 60 Hz." That means users with 4K displays at 120 Hz (or less likely, 8K displays at 60 Hz) won't be able to tap the full capability of those displays through this port. It implies limited throughput associated with an HDMI 2.0 port instead of the most recent HDMI 2.1 standard, though there are other possible explanations for the limitation besides the port itself, and we don't yet know which best describes the situation.

There aren't many monitors and TVs that do 4K at 120 frames per second, and those that do are expensive. But they do exist, and they're only going to get more common. In fact, it seems a safe bet that after a few years, 4K@120 Hz may become the industry standard.
