I have been posting here daily since march 2009.

this has been a rewarding time for me personally and hopefully for you, the regular visitors to this blog. the pleasure of coming here daily and seeing the work of hundreds of unbelievably creative people is what keeps me coming back; it's what challenges me intellectually, visually.

now it's time for a rest, time to retreat to my studio and to my own work, time to pick up a number of projects that have lain dormant over the months / years.

I'm happy to hear from you, just drop me a line. but I won't be accepting any new submissions until the blog is 'live' again, sometime in the future.

my deepest thanks to every one of you for visiting, following, and subscribing. please do come back again.

kawase hasui: shin-hanga

inspired by the exhibition at virginia museum of fine arts 2012

hasui created more than six hundred woodblock color prints throughout his career. as an acclaimed painter and printmaker, he illustrated landscapes, townscapes, and sacred landmarks in japan. he was named a living national treasure by the japanese government in 1956.

early in his career, hasui worked primarily as a commercial illustrator for magazines and in advertising. his career path changed in 1918 when he was inspired by the prints of ito shinsui and began to create prints of his own. that same year, hasui’s first experimental prints were published by watanabe shōzaburō, initiating a relationship that would last for the rest of hasui’s life.

watanabe named the prints created by hasui and others shin-hanga, meaning “new prints.” by bringing together the talents of an artist, a block carver, a printer or block colorist, and a publisher, shin-hanga works mimicked the traditional collaborative process of ukiyo-e printmaking. instead of the flat, stylized planes typical in ukiyo-e, shin-hanga incorporated aspects of western draftsmanship and printmaking, including perspective and volumetric shading.

kendell geers, born in 1968 in south africa, uses various media such as installation, drawing, video, performance, and photography. he gained international recognition through his participation in documenta 11 (2002) and his active global exhibition activity.

his life and work can be divided into two decade-long periods whose trajectories and developments are explored in this exhibition. the first political phase runs from 1988 to 2000, during which time the artist, a white south african, explored the moral and ethical contradictions of the apartheid system through his practice. geers developed a visual vocabulary characterized by provocation, humor, and violence by using found objects such as barbed wire or glass shards. by appropriating historical events and ideas, he focused on questions of relationship between individual and society. it was in this context that geers changed his date of birth to may 1968, the start of the student and civil revolution, and joined every political party in the period before south africa’s first democratic elections, from the extreme right-wing to the communist party. in this way, he expressed his doubts about the fetishization of party politics.

initiated by his move to brussels in 2000, his later european period is now characterized by a more poetic aesthetic. here, geers transferred his incendiary practice into a postcolonial and increasingly global context, suggesting more universal themes like terrorism, spirituality, and mortality. as such, the artist’s life and work can be said to constitute a living archive comprised of political events, photographs, letters, and literary texts that serve as a source of inspiration and represent a continuation of his oeuvre.

while spending extensive time in cities like tokyo, hong kong, shanghai, kolkata and new york, I was getting increasingly fascinated by man-made structures. I consider all man's scientific achievements an integral part of human evolution. so, to me the city is not less of a natural environment than the rainforest. it is an ever-present human desire to go further and leave some trace behind in the fraction of the time we are given. my drive is not different. I aim to grasp the devices at hand, push towards new frontiers by converting already existing technologies for photography in the hope of coming up with something new, a new device, a new language, a new frontier.

the factor of time is essential both in our private history and for humanity as a community. I am more interested in the drama of our own transience. in my works I capture man's finite time in infinity. in my images I "stage" a situation where people are seen from a distance and I depict them as particles in a system. the observer of this scene is an imaginary person, looking at the whole as an outsider, as if being exempt from the laws of time. I also perceive time and events taking place subjectively, consequently inappropriately. I find particular events more important than others, so I would instinctively emphasize them in my compositions. to eliminate this problem, I am experimenting with systems that relate to reality like watches and record series of events objectively. I build digital camera systems, adopt industrial machine-vision cameras and set up script-driven post processing methods.

in stainless I scan rushing subway trains arriving to stations. the images record a number of tiny details of this moment. we see people staring towards their destinations standing at the doors framed by the sliding door windows. they are scrutinizing the uncertain future. similarly to all my images, their main motivation is arrival. the darkness of the tunnels deep below the city turns these chemically clean mock-ups into fossils of our time.

"what interests me most in light painting is the ability to draw in three dimensional space and the possibility to alter the reality without post processing programs. I like to use in my photos different kind of figures such as skeletons and ghostly light creatures. by using these figures I can add more humane stories into my photos and alter the cultural learned feelings they cause in the viewer of the photo. I especially like to use the skeleton figure because of it's strong pre-learned emotional concept and place it in totally different situations and emotional stages than in which it's usually seen in popular culture. "

during a 40-year career as a commercial photographer, arthur meyerson has continuously created personal images that “are less about technique and more about a pure passion for seeing and capturing what i saw,” he says. that work is gathered in a new book, the color of light. says meyerson: “while the subject matter is diverse, the pictures are held together by the fact that they are made up of the three themes that interest me the most in photography; light, color and moments. light produces color. light can be soft or intense… color can provoke or excite. it can also inform. at their best, light and color can come together at a moment in time and create an atmosphere, emotional response and/or a sense of place. and for me, that is the power and joy of the color of light.”

I am interested in the power of contradiction, the lure of anticipation, and incompatible states of the self – what was once bound is made free, the known made unknown. in a wavering step between angst and serenity, fear and pleasure, I want to give form to anxiety, a shape to tension. I propose an exploration of personal exposure – a record of work that explores the fragment as metaphor, the use and dis)abuse of the body, and the framing of psychological imperatives.
