Modern architecture is supported by all black and white interiors and materials such as concrete and dark wood throughout only add another layer of sophisticated luxury. Strong design statements such as the custom mirror wall behind the reception desk or masculine platform beds are all part of the Habita MTY experience. And of course, one cannot forget the Poolbar which includes two infinity pools and hard to ignore views of the city.

I’m always on the lookout for new, modern hotels but many times wonder what will happen to their immediate, flashy image a few years later. Considering Habita MTY was built back in 2008, one can appreciate its smart design choices that are deserving the many design awards it has received.

Inspired by seeing a number of placards put aside he created a cabinet system with boxes, in four different widths and heights, standing on one leg. Sticks can be used for several occasions; a low board, a side board or a casual wardrobe. Loose you can use it as a small hall cabinet or bed side table.

I love the simple shapes and the playful one leg. It looks like the cabinet can fall aside at any moment. Sticks are available in plain, effect or gloss lacquer.

Comprised of facsimiles of existing notebooks, commissioned essays, collaborations, and conversations of artists, scientists, philosophers, linguists, psychologists economists and political theorists involved in the event, the notebooks appear in three different formats (A6, A5, B5) and range from 16 to 48 pages in length.

The idea is to document and share the musings and thought processes of many influential figures, in a true It’s the journey that matters philosophy, as said by the organizers:

A note is a trace, a word, a drawing that all of a sudden becomes part of thinking, and is transformed into an idea.

Bold colors and understated typography make these books into simple and desirable objects… I’d want one of each!

dOCUMENTA (13) notebooks is a post by Marina Esmeraldo on Minimalissimo.

The interior space changed a lot in order to become practical to its new function. On the contrary, the old, steel window frames were kept unchangeable contributing to the industrial character of the building. But what I like the most is the new concrete staircase’s design that helps spread the light that comes through the main skylight.

Another beauty of this project is in the combination of high bright LED technology with tactile materialization. The LEDs are hidden within the horizontal post. When the brass strips touch, the electrical circuit is closed and the light turns on. You can adjust the position of the lamp by moving the horisontal post, and by bringing it down you can turn the light off.

Two children’s bedrooms and the master bedroom are on the main floor, along with three garden spaces which are accessible from each room. The second floor holds the living spaces and looks down into the gardens on the lower level. The house is quite small, only six rooms in total. Nonetheless, it serves as an elegant living space for this young family.

I am a huge fan of the layout of the rooms and the materials. The staggering of the garden spaces with the interior spaces gives the house an airy feel and allows for tons of natural light. The lightness of the gardens is contrasted with the heavy concrete walls, which have been left bare to preserve the integrity of the material. This is a house full of opposites: heavy and light, inside and outside, wide and narrow. The contrasting elements come together for a beautiful experience which proves the saying: opposites attract.

The design is very simple and has no unnecessary details, but at the same time the result is very useful because with its adjustable neck you can direct the light where you need it.

This is the philosophy of newly formed development team and consultancy, Minimal Tools, who have recently released their first iOS app, Pop – a simple notepad tool to allow you to conveniently write things down as you would on a blank piece of paper, reducing friction between you and what you are trying to accomplish.

Pop rather impressively takes simplicity to the extreme by excluding any extraneous features. Just launch and start typing. From it’s quick loading time to the carefully considered typography, Pop successfully engages with its user, which many notepad apps fail to do.

I think it works very well for its intended purpose – to provide you with a single sheet of paper to quickly jot down some words, copy the text and put it somewhere else later. Simple and efficient. If anyone has downloaded Pop, please share your thoughts.

The Femme Chair is obviously reminiscent of all things maritime, providing a simple nod to its inspiration. This chair does not hide anything, its structure and composition are plain for all to see, allowing one to trace its origins and see how the parts fit together. Femme Chair is quiet and unassuming, but possesses a strong sense of character. The way the circle tilts upwards, delicately balanced on its base, gives it a bird-like quality. Perhaps like a little bird perched on a little ship.

Part of a collection of three pieces (Marc, Camps & Jorge; a coffee table, an umbrella stand and a magazine rack, respectively), it’s executed in steel rods, a material that subtracts visual weight as it creates void volumes. It stands as a simple, straightforward structure, that could very well go unnoticed as it blends into its environment, or draw attention precisely because of its simplicity.

Combined with the leather handle, an elegant touch to the piece that provides it with a better grip for moving, both materials (steel and leather) have the quality to age well and be sober, lasting products, as intended by the designers.
