There are so many ways to use a Ball jar – as a vase, a place to put your loose change at the end of the day, a candle holder and many more. Sometimes, however, an alternative use was determined by the company and was very specific.

Inside the pictured thermos is a Ball Perfect Mason amber half gallon jar. The jar was made in 1957 at Ball's Hillsboro plant for one purpose – to be put inside a thermos bottle, specifically the Standard Jug. These amber jars were never sold as canning jars to the home canner.

The big question has always been "Why were they made in amber?" Amber protects the contents from sunlight; however, a jar inside a thermos is completely shielded from sunlight. The only explanation is that the amber tank at Hillsboro was available at a time when none of the flint tanks were. Since these amber jars were made especially for use in the thermos and are rare, they are highly sought by collectors.

Stay tuned to learn more about other uses of a Ball jar...

Cyrus E. Dallin (1861-1944) was noted for his western-themed sculptures, especially those relating to Native Americans. His famous Indian Cycle that tells the story of the Plains Indians’ relationship with the white man in a series of four statues of mounted warriors had been completed in 1909 with Appeal to the Great Spirit. Dallin returned to this theme often. In 1929, he completed Passing of the Buffalo, also known at The Last Arrow.

Dallin said that his sculpture “represents the great tragic event in the history of the Plains Indian which sealed his doom as a free, self-respecting human being, and forced him to accept the grudging bounty of the white man and to become a pauperized ‘ward of the nation.’ My statue depicts the Indian standing with one foot resting upon a Buffalo skull, his last arrow gone, fully conscious of his plight, looking into the future with questioning soul and asking ‘What has fate in store for us now?’”

Originally placed in Dallin’s own estate in Arlington Heights, Massachusetts, the statue was purchased by Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge in 1931 and was installed by the sculptor at her estate in Madison, New Jersey.

Sometime after Mrs. Dodge’s death, the sculpture went on display at the auction house of Sotheby Parke Bernet in New York City. There it was noticed by Edmund F. Petty, who proposed that it be acquired as a tribute to his father, Fred J. Petty. In 1975, the Margaret Ball Petty Foundation made the purchase. The price - $150,000 – was a record price for an American sculpture at the time.

The statue was moved to Muncie. In 1976, the memorial was donated to the City of Muncie. It was installed at the intersection of Walnut and Charles Streets in Muncie, in front of the Ball Stores department store that was once owned by Fred and Margaret Petty. By the summer of 1999, the department store had closed, and the building had been demolished. Street repairs necessitated moving the statue, so the opportunity was taken to perform much-needed restoration and preservation. The statue was then moved to Minnetrista’s lobby, where it remained until late 2008. By then construction of the roundabout on Walnut Street downtown was completed and the statue was remounted on its base.

Hattie was born into a wealthy Delaware County family in April, 1864. Her father, Harvey Mitchell, was a physician and landowner. Hattie was educated in the Muncie schools and graduated from Muncie High School in 1881. Five years later, she married Charles Haines Anthony in “one of the most brilliant and enjoyable affairs that has ever taken place in this city.” Anthony was the grandson of Samuel P. Anthony, a Delaware County pioneer physician, who amassed a large fortune as a merchant and landowner. Charles Anthony added to the family fortune as organizer and president of Economy Gas Company and real estate developer.

On February 19, 1890, Harvey Mitchell Anthony was born to Hattie and Charles. He was their only child. Charles and Hattie built a home in the 200 block of East Adams Street and Hattie settled into her role of society wife and mother. Hattie had a great interest in clothing, jewelry and travel and often combined the three. She became a frequent visitor to Washington, DC, New York City and Palm Beach, Florida.

At the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City and the Willard Hotel in Washington, Hattie was often seen wearing her designer dresses and plethora of diamonds on the hotels’ Peacock Alleys. Hattie soon became popular with the media in several cities and was mentioned in the newspaper of New York, Washington, DC, Indianapolis and Chicago.

After her attendance at a White House reception, The Washington Post reported that, with her diamond-heeled shoes, Hattie had one-upped Alice Longworth Roosevelt, daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt. It was noted that, in addition to several pairs of shoes with diamond studded heels, Hattie had shoes set with turquoises, bronze pumps decorated with beads of solid gold, white doeskin boots with jeweled buttons, and more.

Charles died in 1921 and Hattie spent most of the rest of her life living in hotels, including the Waldorf-Astoria and the Hotel Roberts in Muncie. Betty Thornburg Love, author of Recollections of the Hotel Roberts, noted that “Her large hats, beautiful furs, fashionable clothing, and her walking stick with a crook in the handle made her a striking figure indeed. Her appearance was so regal guests must have thought she was a Queen of some country! She always arrived at the hotel with trunks of clothes even though she had planned to only stay a week.”

Hattie successfully fought cancer twice then died of a heart attack at age 77 on June 1, 1941 in her suite at the Hotel Roberts. Her son had died several years before. Survivors included her daughter-in-law, Ruth Leffler Anthony, and her granddaughter, Ann Anthony. In 1991, Ann Anthony Brophy donated several of her grandmother’s dresses, evening gowns, wraps, and boas to the Minnetrista Heritage Collection.

However, “consumer glass,” as the fruit jars and home canning accessories were called, was not Ball’s only product line. They had always made and sold jars to food packing companies. These packer jars were called “commercial glass.”

A packer jar did not necessarily look like the fruit jar. It could have any shape, be any size and have any mouth opening; really, whatever the food packer wanted. Some companies would opt to have their name or logo embossed on the jars. This made for a fancier, but more expensive jar. The packer would have to pay for the special mold, as no other company could use it. Customers wanting to keep the cost down could order a plain, generic jar and use a paper label identify the contents they put into it. But the plain jar did not have to be unattractive. How a jar looked was found to have a big impact on the marketability of the final product.

By 1930, glass technology had developed to the point that almost any design could be produced. So packer jars could have embossed decorations and unusual shapes. The head of the Commercial Glass division at Ball Brothers for many years in the first half of the 20th century was Fred J. Petty, who was the son-in-law of company president Frank C. Ball. A few of his designs are shown.

The spring annuals in bloom right now are stunning! Here are two favorites from Cassie, our Horticulture Manager:

In the Rose Garden
This April blooming white flower is called Anenome blanda or the Windflower. These plants naturalize in the garden, which makes them great ‘shoes and socks’ for spring flowering perennials and shrubs. The whole plant will go dormant not long after blooming! I love the cheerful daisy-like flowers!

In Oakhurst Gardens
The carpet of plants you see in the woodland is Virigina bluebells, Mertensia virginica. They are native to our moist woods and river floodplains. The flower buds start out a soft pink and as they open they turn purplish-blue. As with other spring ephemerals, these plants will go dieback (go dormant) by mid-summer. They would make a neat addition to a shade garden, giving you interest in the early spring when your hostas and ferns are dormant.

Created by Cyrus E. Dallin, the bronze statue, Appeal to the Great Spirit, was the fourth and last in the sculptor's Indian Cycle. The sculpture depicts a defeated Sioux chief appealing to the Great Spirit for spiritual assistance. In 1909, the statue won a gold medal at the Paris salon. The original was purchased by the city of Boston and has been on display in front of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts ever since.

After the 1925 death of Edmund B. Ball, his family searched for a suitable memorial for him. They settled on having a replica of Appeal to the Great Spirit cast in bronze and erected on a site just east of the Ball family homes. Dallin was commissioned to supervise the casting of the replica and to provide on-site guidance for the mounting of the statue on the appropriate limestone base. The details of the pedestal, trees, shrubbery and flowers were carefully designed to enhance the visual impact. The statue and surrounding park opened in 1929.

In 1987, David T. Owsley, grandson of Frank C. Ball, represented Minnetrista at the Sotheby's auction where he purchased this replica. With the limestone base, it is 30" high, 14" wide, and 20" long. Currently, you can see this replica at the Heritage Collection online.
Although Indiana isn’t at the very heart of earthquake country, they can still dangerous, especially for those of us in the southeastern part of the state. Fortunately, now there is something you can do to become better prepared to face such an emergency.

Join almost 400,000 Hoosiers and 1.7 million people in an 11-state area in the GREAT CENTRAL U.S. SHAKE OUT, which is being held in conjunction with the bicentennial of the devastating New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812.
What is hairy, lives in the water, and is really good at building? That's right, beavers! Last year I spotted a beaver along the river bank here at Minnetrista. It was my first time seeing one. Ever since then I have tried to learn more about how beavers live. So when I found out Minnetrista was celebrating International Beaver Day this Thrusday, April 7 at 4 p.m. I figured it should be our next Casey's Clubhouse Explorer Challenge.

Join Minnetrista's staff at 4 p.m. (in the lobby) this Thursday to learn more about the wonder builders of the river and earn 5 points. Walk along the river bank to see if you can spot any beavers, do an activity and you can even touch a real beaver pelt (fur).

I also hope to see everyone at the Humanimal Family Fun Day this Saturday, April 9, 12-4p.m. It's sure to be a wild time! You can make an animal mask, explore how animal feet work, and play some games to learn about how animals see. At 1:30p.m. The Cincinnatti Zoo will show you live birds from around the world and talk about how they are suited to live in different habitats. It should be a great way to explore the world of animals :)

He laughs. “How long have we been open?”

Steve Gibson is the Woodshop Manager at Minnetrista, and has been since the day Minnetrista opened over 21 years ago. He and a devoted group of volunteers called “The Woodshop Guys,” make everything from exhibit components and office furniture, to the Children’s Garden shed and mushroom forests for the summer event “Fairies, Sprites & Lights at Minnetrista.” Their latest project is a very special set of benches for the Discovery Circle in Oakhurst Gardens.

The story behind these benches began 15 years ago, when Gibson was still fairly “new” at Minnetrista. He and his crew made the original benches in the Discovery Circle at Oakhurst.
Eventually, the benches started to break down and needed to be replaced in 2011. The woodshop crew designed a new, “plainer” bench and the plan was approved. At this point in the story Gibson would normally buy new materials to build the outdoor furniture, but something better came along.

Old benches in Oakhurst Gardens (near Discovery Cabin)

About a year before this planning began, a giant White Oak tree was cut down in Oakhurst Gardens. It was very old and had begun to rot. Thinking about his woodshop, Gibson and the grounds crew decided to save the tree for lumber. The tree was cut down, sent to Lakey’s Saw Mill to be sawed into lumber, and left to cure for over a year.

Just as the lumber was cured and ready for use, it was needed. Gibson decided to use the White Oak to make the new benches.

“We had those old benches down there for 15 years and we never sprayed them or anything. Then, we used Red Oak from Indiana. White Oak is naturally more resistant to water, not porous. And we sprayed the benches with a fungicide and water preservative. If they’re sprayed every so often, they could be there for decades.”

Gibson said the woodshop guys were really excited to work on a project like this. “It’s something they can see finished and lasts. It’s not something we’re going to throw away or put in storage in three months, like some of the exhibits we build.”

Minnetrista’s grounds crew installed the new benches on March 14, 2011.

Again, Gibson laughs. “See, the tree is still part of Oakhurst, just in a different shape.”
