Just finished my painting for the Mark Murphy group show at Art Basel, coming up in December. So I thought I'd share the rough sketch I did before I started painting. I should have a jpeg of the final piece later this week, but I'm a little excited about how fast I did this one. 2 weeks for an 18" x 18" painting is not bad :)

My facebook friends already heard about this little moment so I'll share it here-- Mark Murphy came to speak at Otis when I was in my sophomore year, and I've wanted to work with him ever since, so I really can't believe my little dream has come true so fast! I feel truly honored, so thanks Mark for inviting me into this show :)

We will be releasing a very limited and huge print of my 3'x4' piece on Saturday November 7th-- more info soon on that, but for you NY locals I will be at a live print release/signing on that day from 12 to 3pm at the gallery. This is the second piece I will have at the New York show. As I said in the drawings post, this one was inspired by Mariee Sioux's Native American imagery, and I had a lot of fun weaving all the little details in the small space available on the panel. Working so big lately gives me a new respect for the challenge of little pieces! I'll miss doing them.

Time constraints = this one and the 3'x4' will be the only ones in this show for me. For those of you who are local, mark your calendars for the opening: Saturday November 7th, 7-11pm. We will be in the Lower East Side, exact location details will be available here as soon as I get them. Hope to meet some of you there! :)

Update on the 3'x4' piece image: Been under-the-weather this weekend, so I'm a bit behind. But I have a whole load of process pictures that I'm trying to get together to post with the final image all in one entry. If it takes too long to do that, maybe I'll post the final with some details shots and later compile the process pictures separately. I want to share it with you already! ^_^

Since it's been a while, I thought I'd share some drawings I've been working on. They started off being inspired by a Native American theme, as I've been listening to the enchanting music of Mariee Sioux; her sound and lyrics are equally haunting and spellbinding. Since some of you seemed to enjoy reading the last post, I'll explain the thought-process and stories of each piece when I post the final paintings.

I've painted the above drawing already, I just don't have a good hi-res image of the final piece yet. I'm going to paint the bottom-most drawing, but probably not the second one for now...we'll see. I mean, I like the simplicity of it, but I might change a few things in it if I do paint it.

^ This one was inspired by a friend's self-portrait as she was kind enough to let me use her as a model :) I'll post her photos and links with the final painting.

Drawings are quick, so the above is perhaps a week's worth of work. The rest of the time, I've been working on the largest painting I've ever done to date (I know I say that a lot, but it's because I keep going up in size :) This one will be 4 feet wide and 3 feet tall, and I'll be lucky to finish by the end of September. I've already pulled half a dozen all-nighters on it, and I'll probably be doing a lot more of those this month. More details soon on that painting, and the 3-day New York group show I'm going to be in. Thanks for your patience! I’ve been working away on two new paintings, another 7”x7” and a 9”x12,” this time influenced by Native American imagery. They will probably be some of the last truly small pieces I do for a while, so it’s a bit of a sad goodbye because I like these miniature insular universes as much as I do the huge mad ones. More on that later.

Juxtapoz just posted a fun 20-question style "Back Talk" feature with me on their site. I also want to point you to a wonderful blog called Lady Lavona’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and thank her for sharing my art on there.

So, the ‘Riddles in the Dark’ show. Super apologies to any of you that I missed in the first hour of the opening reception. Don’t you hate it when you’re running late and it just happens to be another day in traffic hell on PCH? Le sigh…I did enjoy the 2 hours that I was there for though, and many thanks to all of you who came out and chatted or even got a photo :) Of course, thanks so much to those of you who picked up a piece or a print, I hope you enjoy it!

As promised, here's a little backstory on the show. These five paintings were based on the concept of loss and discovery, just one of those philosophical questions I mull over while painting, heh. Pandora, from the classical myth embodies this perfectly—her curiosity, and penchant for discovery drove her to lose a great deal (letting evil and darkness into the ’perfect’ world). I find it rather fascinating that in our quest to find something new or to gain knowledge and understanding, we must lose something in return…whether it’s the loss of life (how many explorers have died for the sake of discovery?), past beliefs that must die to make way for the new, loss of stability, sanity, etc. The more things we know, the more complex our universe seems to become. This set of paintings is about all of those things.

“Between the Shadows” 24” x 36” Acrylic on wood. SOLD.
This piece is based on the myth of Pandora's Box...the many generations of explorers have inherited Pandora’s deadly curiosity, and as they open up worlds of wonder and magic, they also unleash danger and darkness with their discoveries...Please view at the largest resolution here for all the details, some highlights include:
-the names of the Columbia space shuttle crew on the headstone at top right
-the phases of the moon in her hair
-the zodiac (on the clock and the sky, as well as the symbols around her watch) and the constellations (including Scorpius, Hercules, Serpens, Crater, Antila, Hydra, Gemini, Bootes, Corona Borealis, Ursa Major).
- the Sphinx (her riddle reads ‘Large as a mountain, small as a pea. Endlessly swimming in a waterless sea: Asteroids.’), Darwin, the polar explorer, the astronaut, the Man who Laughs, the North and South Winds blowing the rocketship…
- the edge of the world scene on the bottom (the ‘Flat Earth’ mentality)
-that well-known explorer image of the medieval man with his head in the atmosphere, except I added the tree of life, time, and the mother-goddess figure, and made it a night and day separation.
The two astronomical clocks are inspired by dozens of different ones from around Europe, which I combined into my own designs.

“The Lost Boys” 9” x 12” Acrylic on wood. Available through dwg@coreyhelfordgallery.com
This piece is based on the 'Lord of the Flies' novel, by William Golding (and the Peter Brook film as well). I called it the “Lost Boys” because this story is in a way like Peter Pan gone wrong. The main figure is a combination of Jack, the violent boy (scarring), Ralph, the rational boy (conch), and Simon, the pacifist (nature and pearls). In researching the trident symbol (that he has on his chest), I found that ‘prongs up’ means to gain through the sea as opposed to ‘prongs down’ which means loss through water. In the novel, the boys set fire to the island, and are rescued by a navy ship, which I thought went well with the ‘prongs up’ symbolism. The rest of his scars are alchemical and zodiac symbols. The beast is speaking a line from the novel, which he directed at Simon: “My poor, misguided boy. Do you think you know better than I do?”

I don't normally paint male characters, so it was fun branching out on this one. I also liked trying dramatic shadows/lighting on the figure, which I haven’t done very much so far.

“Little Lost Cosmonaut” 7” x 7” Acrylic on wood. SOLD.
This one is about the people that explorers leave behind, in this case a mother-child relationship. The child’s rocket is inscribed with the phrase "memento mori.” The constellations, zodiac, and alchemical symbol theme is carried through to this piece too. Charon arrives in his moon boat to take the little lost cosmonaut away to join the stars.

“Gloomy Sunday” 7” x 7” Acrylic on wood. SOLD.
Gloomy Sunday is a song about a lover who is contemplating suicide after the death of her beloved, and was most famously sung by Billie Holiday. The Americanized version of the song has an extra verse at the end that says she was only dreaming, and that her dreaming of her lover’s death only proves how much she longs for him. In the original version of the song, there is no ‘dream’ verse.
I wanted the gargoyles and funerary sculptures to evoke the anguish and violence of her thoughts, while the cameo weeps. There is a lovely line in the song that says, “little white flowers will never awaken you, not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you.” The flowers and stars (which echo the flowers), are a major focus of the piece for that line.

This one is also about lost love, but the story is more ambiguous. He is an explorer out at sea, and has either been lost or he never came back. She has written him letters, which have also been lost at sea (do letters in bottles ever reach their intended recipients?), as have the years, her youth, and beauty…she is still lingering on the past, which is colorful and populated with memories, but the future is empty and dull. The true lover’s briar and rose springing from his heart in the locket, the sea serpent, Poseidon, da Vinci’s horse and rider as a constellation, the women/sirens, and Pinocchio-character are some highlights. The lyrics on the scrolls are from two songs—the ones wrapping around the serpent are from Regina Spector’s "Loveology", and the rest are from Joanna Newsom’s "Cosmia".

Finally, I wanted to share something pretty cool with you all. The lovely Melissa sent me this photo of a tattoo she got recently, based on my “Blue Witch” painting. I’ve posted the painting here alongside the tattoo shot. Thanks so much Melissa, you must be the first person to get a tattoo of my art, and I’m absolutely floored!

Just thought I'd do a quick post since my CHG show is coming up quick, and give an update on the pieces. There will be five paintings and 4 drawings, and it looks like we'll be having a print available as well...more on that in the next week and a half though.

Still finishing up the last piece which is super exciting, but I'll leave you with a new painting... Oh, and I went and turned 23 this week but I'm still not feeling a day older :)

I made it into Creative Quarterly again-- this time in issue 15 under the Professional Illustration category rather than the student section like last time. You can flip through the current issue online here. CQ is now doing two neat sections called "What Inspires You?" (in which the published artists share an image of something that inspires them - mine is the vintage photo at the top of the page) and the "New Talent Gallery" (which is a collage of artist photo-portraits and our names all jumbled up with arrows connecting the photo to the name - mine is the only sepia tone full-length one, towards the middle).

Anyway, here is my published entry, the cover of the magazine, and the pages where I was featured in those other two sections.

The great IllustrationMundo published news about my Paper Tiger print, as did OMGPosters, Inside the Rock Poster Frame, and ArtMOCO-- thanks!

And as I promised, here are some drawings for the upcoming Corey Helford show (July 25). I've finished both paintings so far, am half done with a third and am now starting the big 24" x 36" painting. I'll upload the drawing for that one later. This will be my second 2'x 3' painting, but this time I'll have a proper easel to aid me instead of a wobbly skinny little table easel.

Been really busy with the Corey Helford show...these are going to be some pretty detailed pieces and I'm doing some new things this time with composition on some and subject matter in others, so I'm a bit psyched. Unfortunately, I won't be doing 8 pieces like I said a while ago...we'll see how many I can crank out, but there will be a 24" x 36" piece for sure. The drawing for it is all done, and I'm set to start that one in a couple weeks. Finishing up the first piece right now, and then I'll knock some of the smaller ones out of the way...

So, now for some news.

First off, UK-based Dangerous Ink magazine did a 2-page spread on me in their latest issue! Here is a scan of it.

Unfortunately, most people know me as just "Mia", so there will be some confusion with DI using my full, un-condensed name "Michelle Araujo." “The Inventress”

Here is what I’ve been working on for the past 5 weeks…my largest, most detailed work to date. Sorry for the size of this file, but it is very difficult to show all of it on the web—for one thing the size effect doesn’t exactly register online. It’s going for the “Overdose” Hi-Fructose group show at CoproGallery next Saturday, and will be up for the entire month of April. For those of you in the vicinity, please try to go see the show while it’s up—it really is one of the best lineups I’ve seen, and I’m hearing the work is simply breathtaking!

Here’s a little background info on mine—
This painting started off being based on the Tales of Hoffman, and in fact E.T.A. Hoffman’s literature in general. For those of you who’ve not heard of him, he is most famous for writing the Nutcracker, and most of his stories also deal with inanimate, often mechanical objects coming to life in a fantastical way. They are macabre fairy tales written in a time where Romanticism ended and the Enlightenment began, so there is always tension between the imagination and reason. There is also a fragmentary nature to the Tales of Hoffman in the many interwoven narratives, and a gothic influence through which his characters are tormented on their paths to happiness. I tried to give a sense of all this in the piece.

Interestingly for me, I noticed many parallels in these stories with the way in which my mind works during the creative process. At first glance in my mind’s eye, it appears that I have dozens of ideas vying for attention, but upon closer inspection I find that some of these are half –finished, missing an arm or a leg like some of the creatures in this piece…there are also thoughts that frighten or torment me, as well as beautiful thoughts that inspire and excite me, and these coexist side by side, creating a dynamic habitat for my new piece to be born in. Again, I wanted the objects and characters in this piece to reflect this.

Finally, it just so happens that my mind is a constant battlefield for my intellectual side and my imagination to jostle upon, much like the stuff in Hoffman’s stories…plus I couldn’t resist throwing in some of the ‘30s horror film imagery that I love so much, alongside the fanciful whimsical stuff to portray the sinister, gothic aspects of Hoffman, that lurk beneath the light-hearted magic.

As terrified as I was at first to work on so large a scale (for me), it really turned out to be a lot of fun, and I can’t wait for another chunk of time to do another. I’ve been sick this last week, but my piece is for the Roq la Rue show is all drawn out and ready to be painted starting tomorrow…and I’ve been sketching for the Corey Helford show in July. Can’t wait..!

Last but definitely not least, I have a drawing at the Hive Gallery’s 4th Year Anniversary show, which opens next Saturday as well. I didn’t get a chance to snap a shot of my drawing, but I’ll put a link to it once Nathan gets it on his site… a hearty congratulations to Nathan for the anniversary!!

"Her Lingering Shadow"

Here is my piece for Lola’s SuperSchool Group show at Copro Nason Gallery (now/soon to be known as Copro Gallery, though I’m not sure when the transition is happening).

As I told my flickr people, this painting is based on Nancy from the Oliver Twist novel by Charles Dickens. It strikes me that people mostly remember the male characters in that story, yet she was the most interesting out of all them to me. For those of you who haven’t read the novel, it’s much darker than the 1968 film-musical. It’s set in the London slums of the 19th Century Industrial Revolution, and tells the story of the street children who are forced into lives of crime. Nancy was one such casualty, but interestingly attempts to save Oliver from this sort of life and loses her life in the process. There’s so much more to her than that, but I could write a whole essay on her if I start, haha. I’m fascinated by tragic heroines. And even though she wasn’t meant to be the heroine in the novel, I think she sort of become one. Dickens was even denounced by some for making a prostitute into a character that they could sympathize with.

So two openings this week—unfortunately I’m really backtracked on this next painting, so I won’t be able to make the San Francisco one. I’m really bummed about that, because the 4 other artists will all be there, and that was my chance to meet them all. Curses, curses. Unfortunately my sloth-like painting process rarely agrees with my intentions to leave the studio. Hopefully I’ll make up for that by attending the Superschool opening, at least that's the plan.

Some Things to Share With Thee...

Here are my pieces for the Gallery1988 SF show, which opens next Friday (March 6th). As I’ve mentioned before, these are all small works, the largest being 8”x10” and the small ones 5x5”.

If you are interested in buying one, ask Katie to be placed on the preview list here: gallery1988sf@gmail.com Once you’re there, she will send you an email with a link to all the art in the show (usually a week before the opening, so keep your eyes peeled) as well as all the buying instructions. Reply to that email, or call her within gallery hours (Tues-Sat, 12-7pm PST) to make your purchase.

The theme I chose for this show was witches. I defined them here as social outcasts who turn to magic and take refuge in different environments that create a barrier between themselves and the rest of the world. These environments are also potentially dangerous or frightening, which enhances their mystery.

Each color represents the witch’s environment: Black (darkness), white (snow), blue (sea), red (fire), and green (woods)…Oh, and the various symbols that you see on some of their foreheads, in pendants, or stones, are actual wicken symbols. I had a lot of fun with these, and could see myself expanding on this theme in larger works later down the line.

Am listening to some Stephen Sondheim tunes right now, and trying not to inhale the fumes of these freshly varnished paintings. Perfect atmosphere for a color comp… ha. Yep, you heard it: this next painting is begging for a color comp because it’s so big and full of stuff. Yipe!

Stormy Weather! and some other things

Had a great time Saturday night at the Movers and Shakers show, seeing familiar faces and meeting new people : ) Thanks so much to both of you who bought my pieces, and to Arrested Motion, Hi-Fructose, Daily duJour, and Sour Harvest for posting about the show!

My next two shows run back to back in San Francisco on March 6th, and LA on March 7th. There's a slight chance I'll make it to both, but I'll let you know, SF, if I am going. I’ve finished the work for those and am getting them photographed as I type here, so I’ll post them up as soon as I get jpegs back. For now, here is the evite for the G1988 SF show I’m in. Mine is the image on the bottom left.

Here is my latest painting (in fact the first one I finished in 2009 :), for the first group show I will be a part of this year. I will also have the drawing up for sale, which is also 7" square, but is graphite on brown paper. The show, "Movers and Shakers," is curated by Gino Joukar, and features 70 other artists (the line-up is downright jaw-dropping) at PovEvolving Gallery in Chinatown (LA, CA). The opening is on February 14, so celebrate Valentine's Day (or part of it) with us at the opening reception! I'm currently working on the 5 paintings for my 5-person group show at Gallery1988 SF, opening March 6. I will have 2 8x10"s and 3 5x5" ones...then the pieces will get progressively larger over the next group shows.

Quite a few exciting things (hint: prints and publicity related) happening very soon, so I'll keep you in the loop. For starters, Infectious has added me to their roster of Featured Artists (thank you voters!!), and is offering my Snow White's Sonata piece as vinyl art for your laptop or iphone. They also conducted an interview with me, which you can read on my profile page there. Trivia: I tend to write essay-like answers to questions (I'm not very good at self-editing, and contrary to the common theory that I'm a quiet, withdrawn little pipsqueak, I am a notorious "babbler" when you get me going!)...so anyway, the poor interviewer had his work cut out for him in editing my answers to the point. Thanks, Joey! Sorry for the headache :)

Also, a huge, loving grizzly-bear hug to the dear Suzanne for writing about my CHG show in her glorious Wurzeltod blog back in December. And it's not that I forgot all of you, but I guess I didn't make the obligatory "new year" post, so: thank you to everyone who made my 2008 what it was, and for getting me where I am now in 2009! Special thanks to Nathan Cartwright, LC, David, Jan, and all the gallery owners who gave this nobody a chance, also to those of you who bought my work (thanks to you, each of my 2008 creations has a safe, new home now), to everyone who even remotely supported my work (and to those of you didn't, and in turn gave me the drive to hopefully prove you wrong someday!)...I'm leaving a lot of people out by name, but you know who you are, and I just want to take this little paragraph to say that I truly appreciate you all. I wish all of you good health, love, and happiness for this year!

Here is the drawing for my next painting. She's not part of the witch theme (that's for the 1988 show). This will be a 7"x7" for a special group show in February, more details soon!

Just realized that I rarely show drawings for upcoming paintings; in fact the last one I shared was back in May or something for the Distinction Gallery piece! Another rare thing-- it's not on tracing paper like 99% of my final drawings, heh.
