Media news have never been that active since the grounding of the entire fleet of Boeing 787. And medias have never been that active on speculating on the consequence of this grounding on the Airbus A350XWB.

In this regards, Airbus CEO, Fabrice Bregier tried to calm everyone and said he does not foresee an imminent effect of the Boeing 787 grounding on the the Airbus A350XWB program. "Airbus went through discussions with the FAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency about the electric architecture of the aircraft and they seemed very happy at the time".

Airbus will, of course, carefully study recommendations that come out of the Boeing 787 investigations and will evaluate whether they apply to the A350XWB, with Fabrice Bregier noting that the Airbus A350XWB is still in the development stage and that modifications, if needed, are still possible.

Airbus plans to use a different manufacturer's lithium-ion batteries in
its new A350XWB aircraft, which like the 787 is projected to much more
fuel-efficient than other planes.

Airbus has no plans to drop the
proprietary battery yet, but says it could change depending on what
safety investigators recommend.

Airbus has activated a Plan B for the Lithium-Ion battery and that is a wise decision but they will continue the maturity test on the Lithium Ion battery.

Copyright Airbus

Most newspapers have echoed Airbus decision to delay of 3 months the Entry Into Service of the A350XWB.

As disappointing as we can expect, the decision of Airbus to move the Entry Into Service of the A350XWB to the second half of 2014 was the right decision and was not an easy decision. We have seen the huge workload generated by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with an Entry Into Service without the level of maturity needed. Therefore, it is important for Airbus to deliver this next generation aircraft with the level of maturity expected by the customers.

The issue coming from the automated drilling system for the wings have forced Airbus to adjust its planning. The time needed for the software calibration and synchronization will have an effect on the first test aircraft as well as on the production of the 4 or 5 test aircrafts needed for the certification program. But, this planning modification will benefit all partners involved in the A350XWB program and will enable Airbus to come with a mature aircraft at the first delivery.
Moreover, the target remains for the first test aircraft, MSN001, to be airborne before mid-2013. An interesting year to come to see that wonderful bird flying.

While Boeing is finally settling down the 787 production, Airbus is continuing to come on the headlines with news about its Airbus A350XWB.

As announced previously, after having started to join the centre fuselage with the front fuselage, the aft fuselage of the A350XWB has been delivered to the Final Assembly Line in Toulouse and will be joined to the static test airframe.

While headlines are still on the A350XWB static airframe as it will be used for static structural tests, part of the certification process, most works are currently undergoing on MSN001 as the assembly of the 1st test aircraft will start at the beginning of the summer.

This is the case at the Broughton factory, where work has begun on the automated drilling of the upper cover of the left-hand wing of the A350XWB MSN001.

L'assemblage de l'A350XWB est lancé - Start of the Final Assembly of the A350XWB

Final assembly of the A350XWB is now underway at the brand new final assembly line in Toulouse. After a long wait, the new bird is becoming a reality with the assembly of the static aircraft. The brand new FAL has started to join the centre fuselage with the front fuselage.

The Boeing 787 will now compete with a real airplane and not a virtual one. This is becoming really exciting moments.

While I'm not active on the blog, Airbus instead is very active. 2012 is at full power already for the A350XWB.

While the Flying Test Bed continues its flight test to monitor the capabilities of the Trent XWB, extensive testings are currently carried out for all A350XWB systems and components, well ahead of the first flight, to ensure a high level of performance, reliability and maturity on day one.

Besides testing, components are coming out of manufacturing. I have published the image of the structural assembly of the first A350XWB aft fuselage destined for the first flying A350XWB (MSN001) at Airbus' manufacturing site in Hamburg. The fuselage section will now undergo its secondary interior structural assembly and system installation before being delivered to the A350XWB Final Assembly Line in Toulouse.

Inner flap production for the A350XWB at Bremen is also up to speed and major components are coming out from all manufacturing sites to be delivered in Toulouse to start assembly of MSN001 in the coming weeks.

Superb video of only 1 minute and 50 second on the successful maiden

Bravo!

I wanted to share with you my enthusiasm with regards to the video made by Airbus Communication Team on 2011 major achievements with the slogan: "What a Year".

A fantastic video with major achievements of 2011 on all programs: A320, A320NEO, Sharklet, A330, A330MRTT, A380, A350XWB, A400M.

I really enjoyed the music and as an Apple fan, your reference to the iPhone and iPad was great!

Congrats.

Bravo !

It's a huge start for both Aerospace giants, Airbus and Boeing, as Norwegian has split a large order of 222 aircrafts between Airbus and Boeing for their single aisle families, 122 Boeing 737 (a mix of NG and MAX) and 100 Airbus A320NEO.

The Airbus A320NEO confirms its success as Norwegian is the third all-Boeing customer buying the NEO.

As I said in my previous blogpost, I will share with you a brief summary of 2011 as we are now in 2012.

It has been a fantastic year for Airbus in many ways.

First, in terms of sales, 2011 has been the year of the A320NEO. This aircraft is the fastest selling commercial aircraft with more than 1450 orders and commitments in twelve month. And we mustn't forget the Airbus A330, as it has secured over 730 orders since the launch of the Boeing 787.

Second, in terms of deliveries, as Airbus delivered 534 commercial aircraft to 88 customers. Airbus delivered also its 7000th aircraft, an A321 to US Airways. Therefore, a record delivery in its history and still continuing to increase this number.

Third, in terms of programs, all major programs are on track.
The A350XWB has passed a series of industrial milestones that I have tried to describe during 2011 and major component assembly has started in the Final Assembly Line.
The A380 has become a full series programme with 26 deliveries this year.
The A320 sharklet fitted aircraft has made its first flight and continues its flight for certification.
The A330 MRTT has entered into service with its first two customers and finally, the A400M is on track for its final certification and is moving into assembly for its customer aircraft.

Therefore, a very good year for Airbus and that looks very promising in 2012.

Therefore, many blogposts ahead. I look forward your comments for improving this blog.

Bonne et heureuse année 2012 - Happy New Year 2012

Bravo Airbus !

I just wanted to wish you all the best to you and your beloved ones. 2012 will be a crucial year for Airbus with many milestone ahead. I will write a second blogpost to do a summary of 2011.

I will start my first blogpost of 2012 by the delivery of the first major airframe section to the A350XWB Final Assembly Line in Toulouse. The 21 metre long front fuselage delivered from St Nazaire plant by the Beluga is destined to become part of the A350XWB static test airframe and will be assembled, during the first quarter of 2012 with the centre fuselage. Final Assembly of the first "flyable" A350XWB will follow in the 2nd quarter of 2012.

Congrats Airbus !

A400M, le Jeu - A400, the Game

I really loved the concept of Gamification by Airbus Military. Airbus Military has developed a flight simulator on the A400M. The goal of the game: pilot the A400M to a conflict zone, drop paratroops, land in difficult terrain, fly while avoiding enemy fire, etc.

I really enjoyed. You may download it here. It's really cool.

Congrats to Airbus Military for this fantastic initiative.

Le premier vol de l'A320 avec les Sharklets - Maiden flight of the A320 with Sharklets

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cpIaXd-4QGU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Bravo !

On my blogpost, I'm mainly focused on the Airbus A350XWB but another plane continue to garner orders continuously, the world best single-aisle, the A320. Airbus continuously improves its single-aisle and prepare, in parallel, the coming of its new best selling aircraft, the A320NEO.

The A320 jetliner assumed an even sleeker look on November 30th, as the first aircraft equipped with Airbus fuel saving "Sharklets", commonly known as Winglet for the Boeing 737. On the same day, the A320 with its Sharklets performed its maiden flight from the company's Toulouse, France headquarter.

For the occasion, the A320 MSN001 has been dressed up with beautiful shark teeth to bite fuel consumption and CO2 emission.

This first 5 hours initial flight marks the start of a multi-month test campaign that will validate the Sharklets performance and confirm the aerodynamic behavior for its certification. But most important, the retrofit prepares the field for the arrival of the A320NEO, where sharklets are standards.

Good job!

L'A350XWB prend forme - Airbus starts joining the first A350 XWB front fuselage

Before starting my blogpost on the A350XWB, I would like, first, to give a special thank you to the Airbus Communication Team for their advices. And also, a special thanks to @JonOstrower, the editor of FlightBlogger, for its kind words on my publications.

We are coming close to the end of Year 2011 and the A350XWB is high on the agenda of Airbus. He's not the only, as the best selling aircraft, the A320NEO is also high on the agenda.

Airbus has published on its website pictures showing the start of the assembly of the first 21 metre long front fuselage section for the A350XWB in Saint-Nazaire, France. Once completed over the coming weeks, the front fuselage will be transported by Beluga to the A350XWB Final Assembly Line in Toulouse. It will the first major section of the A350XWB to enter the Final Assembly Line.

This first section is for the A350XWB static test airframe and will be followed closely by the first flyable airframe for MSN1.

Every single day that goes by see the Airbus A350XWB MSN001 taking shape.

It is all Airbus plants as well as Risk Sharing partners working hard to produce all necessary components. And today, it is the Pre Final Assembly Lines that are becoming active to produce the first aircraft components of the Airbus A350XWB and that will be sent to Toulouse on the Final Assembly Lines.

It allows the A350XWB Manufacturing team to get acquainted with the tools and to acquire the mechanism to become familiar with the final assembly of the A350XWB.
Therefore, while the planning still remain challenging, the horizon remains clear for the arrival of the Airbus A350 XWB in 2012.

Main thing for Airbus is to learn from Boeing on its 787 and therefore, to avoid doing the same mistakes.

Keep up the good work and keep focused. 2012 will be a very challenging year !

The first flight of Boeing 707 was on October 26th 1958.

53 years later, history repeats itself. It's today the turn of the Boeing 787 to do its First Entry Into Service with ANA.

We can see the different light colors within the cabin.

All pictures of this day can be found on Jon Ostrower blogpost.
Congratulation to both, ANA and Boeing.

Happy Birthday to Airbus A380!

What a wonderful story. Already 4 years since its first Entry Into Service on October 25th 2007 with Singapore Airlines.

What a wonderful story. And above that, all passengers that have flown onboard the A380 loved it at first flight.

Once again, Happy Birthday.

Section 15 of A350XWB

After Aerolia and Premium Aerotec, it's Spirit AeroSystems who is doing the headline.

Kinston regional airport had the surprise to see one of the largest cargo planes in the world, the russian Antonov AN124 landing at Spirit Aerosystem facility to take delivery of composite panels for the A350XWB.

Composite panels, loaded in the AN124, will be flown to Spirit AeroSystems St Nazaire France facility where they will be assembled to make up the first center fuselage of the A350-900 known as section 15.

A wonderful delivery ceremony for China Southern Airlines initial Airbus A380.

A ceremony rich in music, dance and Chinese symbolism before the hand-over of the Airbus A380 to its newest operator, China Southern Airlines.

I have very much appreciated the message of the CEO of China Southern Airlines, when he talked about the Airbus A380 as a gorgeous rainbow serving as a bridge of friendship between the Chinese people and the people of the rest of the world.

Besides the picture of this nice bird, the Airbus A380, what I will remember is the picture of the China Southern Airlines crew members that give this fantastic delivery ceremony a human face.

Wonderful delivery ceremony and new lands to discover for the Airbus A380.

Réseau social dans l'industrie aéronautique - Social Network usage in Aerospace industry

My question today is the place of social network in the aerospace industry. Social network is a hot topic in today's agenda.

If I take the case of Boeing, Boeing is fully convinced by social network and especially with Twitter. We just have to look at all Twitter accounts dedicated to Boeing (@BoeingAirplane, @BoeingDefense, @piboeing, @futureofflight) and where lots of messages are posted daily. Just look at the 1st Commercial Delivery of Boeing 787 to ANA where hundreds of messages were posted. Boeing has made no exception to Facebook where its Facebook page has 75000 likes as well a Facebook page even in French. Boeing has also dedicated a Facebook page for its recruitment and one page for more interactivity with its fans (you can see the Case Study of Boeing strategy on Facebook)

While Airbus has made a remarkable entry in the social network with 2 dedicated Twitter accounts (@AirbusInTheUS, @Airbus), it is still a very timid step into the social media. Airbus has not yet embraced the power of the social network. In terms of Facebook, the most dynamic page is the Airbus in the US

But where are these 2 companies (Boeing and Airbus) in their digital transformation. How Boeing and Airbus Marketing are enhancing their Brands with social media?

Boeing has clearly taken the lead and Randy Tinseth, Vice President Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes has pioneered in corporate blogging. Randy's Journal is a place to find inside stuff about Boeing Commercial world - new airplanes, marketing insights, images and videos. And he discusses on financial earning reports and the status of Boeing's Programs. And there is real interactivity and where people are invited to amplify the movement by retweeting or sharing by whatever means of communication.

Airbus has not yet adopted this kind of communication and is more on a Top Down approach and controlling its communication. Communication is mainly done within the Airbus official website and not through social media. And there is no incentives to amplify the message. It's not viral marketing but traditional marketing.

In today's world where social has a central piece, where employees and partners are more informed and can be a vector of communication, what kinds of communication Aerospace Manufacturers should adopt?

Your feedback is mostly welcomed.

I was not even able to remember when the Airbus A330-200 Freighter did its first flight.

Time flies as the Airbus A330-200F already marks a full year of commercial service and has established itself as a highly efficient and profitable cargo lift solution. And it's a real success for Airbus.

And there's a plebiscite from customers Etihad Crystal Cargo, Turkish airlines and Hong Kong airlines, even placing additional orders like Turkish airlines.

Earlier this month, MASkargo, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, received its initial A330-200F, joining the 3 previous customers. And a new customer, Avianca, that orders 4 A330-200F.

A great success for the versatile A330 platform.

La FAL A320 se dote d'une 3ème ligne d'assemblage à Hambourg - New A320 Final Assembly in Hamburg

Copyright Airbus - FAL Hamburg

As of today, most of the attention is focused on the Airbus A350XWB with its first flight scheduled for next year.

But we shouldn't forget the workhorse of Airbus, the A320 Family aircraft which is a worldwide success. And customers continue to praise the Airbus A320 with renewed orders. And the Airbus A320NEO is confirming the trend.

To continue to deliver the best-selling single aisle aircraft, Airbus opens up a 3rd Final Assembly Line in Hamburg to secure the overall production rate ramp-up.

With a current rate of 38 aircraft a month and an objective of 42 aircraft next year, this new Final Assembly Line will be an important enabler of the production ramp up.

Well done Hamburg !

Following its arrival in Toulouse, all the team has been focused to mount the Rolls Royce Trent XWB engine into the A380 MSN001 Flying Test Bed.

This is another success in all the different milestones passed by the A350XWB.

The Flying Test Bed will now go under extensive ground tests ahead of its first flight later this year.

Congratulation to all the team for this fantastic work.

Livraison du fuselage avant de l'A350XWB - Successful delivery of the A350XWB first forward fuselage

While Boeing is celebrating the delivery of its first Boeing 787, all eyes remain focused on Airbus with the Airbus A350XWB which continues to show its definitive shape.

I have praised all efforts of all Airbus Manufacturing Plants. I have publishe a post yesterday on Aerolia.

A350XWB sections manufactured by Premium Aerotec

It's now the turn of Premium Aerotec to celebrate as it has successfully put together the first forward fuselage for the A350XWB.

The all-composite fuselage is 13 meters long and will be transported by boat over the coming weeks to Hamburg for systems installation.

Congratulation to all Premium Aerotec team!
