Kulpreet Singh (who presented at WordCamp) came to the rescue with his hack to the edit-form-advanced.php, posted here.

I have to say, it worked beautifully but something I didn’t mention in the screencast above was that in Kulpreet’s notes he removed the “Related” tab to make room for the Categories on the right sidebar. What I have now done is add the code back into the PHP file for “Related” although I customized it so it will only show me the “View Drafts” button.

These are things I use all the time so I’m not missing out at all by completely removing the “View all tags” button (found within the “Related” tab).

The customization went smoothly, only took a few minutes, and I’m really pleased that I have now optimized my Post Editing page. Tinkering of this magnitude is not advised for those who have never before worked with PHP files, I highly recommend this trick as long as you make sure to back up your original files.

HockeyStars is devoted to the real stars of the game. It’s a social networking site for minor hockey players, coaches, parents and volunteers that will officially launch to the public in time for the 2008-09 hockey season.

To kick off in style, they’re looking for your photo or video, on or off the ice, of your personal best hockey moment for the My Best Hockey Highlight contest.

All you need to do is head to the site from May 5 to June 9, 2008, upload your content along with a brief story (250 words max) that depicts your Best Hockey Highlight and you could win an XBox 360 or a $1000 Citizens Bank gift card Visa. Also, if you head to the site and place votes on the content that’s up there you could also win a “voters” prize pack including a Sony DVD Camcorder.

As a super cool added bonus gift, if you drop a comment on THIS blog post by midnight on Monday May 19th, you’ll be entered to win these two hockey books authographed by the author, Jason Farris:

Hockey Play by Play with Jim Robson (legendary Canucks broadcaster) and Hail Cesare (tribute to Cesare Maniago).

So let’s recap shall we?

Step One: Check out the My Best Hockey Highlight contest on HockeyStars.com. If you have some content to share (and are 13 years old and up), upload your photos or videos for your chance to win a $1000 Citizens Bank gift card or XBox 360. If you don’t have content to share, vote on other submissions to win the “voters” prize.

Step Two: Just for checking out the HockeyStars site, leave a comment on this blog post to have a chance at winning the two great hockey books mentioned above.

I’ll draw the winner of the books on Tuesday May 20th, pulling a name at random from all the comments below. A huge hat tip to Nancy Zimmerman for making this possible and for being the best social media for banking evangelist around. Good luck everyone!

In recent years I had a moment at the CBC with some memorabilia, and giggled fondly when a posted about Bruno Gerussi’s beard hair in 2006 (link via Darren Barefoot). A focal point of the show and the town is the welcoming sight of Molly’s Reach, but there’s much more to the Sunshine Coast than canned CBC TV archives.

A quick 40 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay will lead you to Langdale terminal, and I must point out (because I’ve been asked countless times) that the all-encompassing Sunshine Coast is not on an island - even though you take a ferry to get there.

Photo credit: Megan Cole on Flickr

For about ten years I attended summer camp in Roberts Creek so I came to know the coast pretty well. Also, my best friend’s grandparents lived over there so once she got her license we’d cruise the strip in Sechelt looking for trouble. Okay, there was no cruising of the strip although I wonder if they have installed an actual stop light since I was there last. But I digress.

The Town of Gibsons has two main commercial areas: Upper Gibsons which has a number of shopping malls, restaurants, services and a light industrial area located on Gibsons Way and Lower Gibsons which is a quaint fishing village with bakeries, cafes, and shops that surround the bustling fishing wharf, a seawalk and the Gibsons Harbour.

Recent developments in the Town include the Downtown Revitalization of Lower Gibsons, a new log wharfinger building and boardwalk over the breakwater, and the development of the Winegarden Waterfront Park. [Gibsons]

The Sunshine Coast towns offer fishing, camping, hiking, gorgeous beaches, boast “an internet savvy population,” and the best part is that the cost of the ferry is only charged one way. Also, you can walk on the ferry at Horsehoe Bay and use the Sunshine Coast Transit System to save money, and the environment during your outing.

Photo credit: Paul Hillsdon on Flickr

In Gibsons you’ll be able to take in a Sunday Market, enjoy Jazz Week from June 7-15, and even the World’s Best Water (that one the “Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting” contest in 2005 [wiki]). It’s come a long way from its Beachcomber days, and I even remember when it got its first Wendy’s/Time Horton’s - that was a pretty big summer for us. Now that the nice weather is creeping up on us, and that one of my dearest friends lives over there, we’ll have to make a point of day tripping to Gibsons in the near future.

Strolling the archives on VancouverHistory.ca I kept coming across recipients of the “Good Citizen Award” like Pearl Steen, Sister Frances, or Arthur William Delamont but it made me wonder if this award still exists today. [Yes, I'm quoting my own post]

After a few inquiries I heard back from the city archives so here’s a quick update:

The Good Citizen Medal was sponsored by the Native Sons of B.C., beginning in 1922, and awarded each year by the Mayor.

There is a pamphlet available titled: “The Good Citizen Medal: Vancouver Canada - Roll of Recipients 1922-1957″

Inside the pamphlet is say, “Annually the Native Sons of British Columbia, Post No. 2, awards A GOOD CITIZEN MEDAL to a citizen of Vancouver who has been selected from nominations made by the people of this City, which recipient is chosen for his or her sterling qualities of good citizenship.”

City archive sources have no record of when the award ceased to be handed out, however it appears that its last recipient was in 1981.

With that, the Good Citizen Award remains a piece of our history and as Vancouverites we should always remember those who helped make this city great (you know, all those selfless volunteers and innovators pre-1981). If you’re interested in learning more, the pamphlet is available for free at the City Archives.

Should a Metro Vancouverite feel like a mini-escape, perhaps even a multi-hour adventure in a single day, what are the options? I’ve decided to pull from a pool of childhood Sunday drive memories and highlight a few gems in this new series: Day Tripping.

Located just over an hour outside of Vancouver, heading East on Hwy 1, you’ll come to the lovely town of Hope (also known as the gateway to holidayland).

Once in Hope you can split off to the Crowsnest Highway, which will take you along Southern BC to the Alberta border, up to the Fraser Canyon along Highway 1 (Trans Canada), or take the 5 along the Coquihalla to Merritt and beyond. More info about regional highways is available at DriveBC. However, there is much benefit to staying in the Hope-land area.

Aside from being a great breakfast spot with amazing mountain views nestled between those evergreen-covered giants, hope is also very historically significant for BC. Located along the Fraser River it was a major pit stop for those gold-rushing up the canyon.

The area I would like to feature is Coquihalla Canyon Park which is more commonly known as the Othello Tunnels. This quintet of railway tunnels, originally part of the Kettle Valley Railway are intertwined with a series of bridges which follow a relatively straight line through a gorge lined with sheer, flat rock cliffs. [TheKettleValleyRailway]

Photo credit: Stephen Rees on Flickr

Trains don’t pass through the tunnels anymore but they’re seriously fun to check out - if you can stand damp darkness and the feeling of being rushed back a hundred years. Here’s an excerpt from a great local resource, FindFamilyFun:

If you have a flashlight, bring it. There are puddles inside the tunnels and I stepped right in the middle of one. In between the tunnels are viewing spots where you can see the Coquihalla River. Be careful, it’s a long way down.

Age group: I saw people from all ages going to the tunnels. You may not enjoy it as much if you don’t like walking (because it takes about 15 minutes to get there), or if you’re scared of the dark.

Oh yes, and there are bats… just so you know.

Photo credit: Stephen Rees on Flickr

We used to go trudging through with my dad (while my mom sat in the car) and always enjoyed the adventure. I haven’t been in about 20 years but it looks like the paths are more cleared away and marked, I recalled saying, “are we supposed to be here?” several times thinking a train was going to rush up behind us at any minute.

In grade 12 for my provincial exam in English our essay theme was “Hope” and I wrote purely about our adventures to Hope and the Othello Tunnels. I’m sure they were looking for something more traditionally inspirational, but seeing my score of 90% lead me to believe the board appreciated my spin.

The Othello Tunnels make a great day trip, and I would also recommend stopping in at Rolly’s in Hope for breakfast on your way out there (if you like the vinyl booth + eggs n’ sausage with never-ending coffee breakfasts like we do). Around the corner on Fraser Street there’s also one of those wooden boards with a space cutout to insert your head on Rambo’s body. Good times.

Bloggers who produce strong, insightful, creative and intelligently content have great value. Luckily for those who would like to make a career with their social media writing skills, some companies out there are realizing a blogger’s potential (Sales and Marketing Executives International).

Photo credit: Roland Tanglao on Flickr

Hurdles that remain include the mindset that having a “blog” means your company’s website will be unprofessional, people can have spelling mistakes and completely forget about the caps lock key, and your company’s outward appearance must now include copy that appears as though it should be a caption on LOLCats. Also, a blog is not Facebook.

Company content should not be dumbed-down because that seems to be what the cool kids are doing. It can still be fun, interesting and professional while promoting your products and services, and your blogger should not be paid peanuts.

With a quick browse through Craigslist this evening I spotted countless job postings for companies seeking “bloggers” although many of them seemed tragically flawed.

Seeking Financial Blogger: “This position requires full time physical presence in downtown Vancouver office with web development team. You will be trained on a proprietary system to facilitate automatic syndication and RSS feed distribution, etc.” I don’t know but to me that sounds like quite the beefy operation for simply producing some blog content. “Syndication” and “RSS” aren’t half as scary or complicated as they sound and if you have it setup right from the get-go you won’t have to touch your feed at all, at any point in time, ever again.

Freeland Writers: “If we happen to publish your work then we’ll pay $125/per story. Each story should at least be 1500 words…” is it just me or does that seem really low by any standards?

Add Your Blog to Our Network: “This is a paying opportunity for bloggers with established blogs… Compensation: $7.5 x Google PR# per post.” So that means if I write on Miss604.com and push them some content I could make $37.50 per post (based on my Google Page Rank of 5). I guess I just value my time and my content a little more than that.

No Clue: “I can pay by the post or hourly on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis, whichever works for you. In terms of compensation, let me know what range you are looking at. I have no idea what the going rate is for something like this!” At least they’re honest but that is followed by: “Most posts can be created and posted within an hour. There are 15 different sites that will require a weekly update.” I wonder what all 15 pages have for Google Page Rank? Hmm…

It’s obvious that the companies advertising on Craigslist have no idea what to charge for this type of thing by any standard. It seems like blogging is far below freelance writing on the career totem pole and yet having a prudent blogger on your corporate team could benefit your company exponentially - think marketing, sales, market research, customer service, client relations etc. The possibilities are endless (see Elastic Path’s white paper: Blogging for Retailers)

I understand that blogging in business is still a rather new concept for some and there are currently no real guidelines for going rates in the marketplace, but when it comes to bloggers who are good at what they do, would like to continue writing and perhaps make a career out of their online publishing skills, where should they look? …And is anyone willing to give them what they’re worth?

On June14th 2008 from 9:00 AM to 5:30 please join us to celebrate what could be the largest Joomla! Day in Canada! We will be getting together at the Vancouver Public Library and there you get to meet many of the people who actually created the Joomla! CMS framework. [RMDstudio]

Tickets are $25 and include refreshments and a Joomla! Day t-shirt, check out the RMDstudios blog or the Tazzu blog for more information.

I must admit, I’ve dabbled in all sorts of open source platforms and although my time with Joomla was minimal it’s still great to see that it has such a widely supportive user base.

Green grass grows in small corner parks like urban savannas while sunbathers find a level surface on which to stretch out and avoid the game of frisbee being played over their head. One of such metropolitan refuges is Barclay Heritage Square and one of its main features is Roedde House.

Roedde House at 1415 Barclay was built in 1893 for Vancouver’s first bookbinder, Gustav Roedde. In 1927 the house was sold by Gustav Roedde in 1927 to H.W. Jeffreys and it later became a boarding house called the “Oehlerking Rooms.”

The City of Vancouver bought the Gustav Roedde House [in 1966] and made it the centrepiece in what came to be called Barclay Heritage Square, bounded by Barclay, Nicola, Haro and Broughton Streets in the West End, and which features nine historic houses built between 1890 and 1908.

In 1990 the restored Roedde House Museum opened its doors for community events and tours. Having done many tours of Victoria during our girls weekends, I’ve become pretty familiar with the architects that formed our big coastal cities in BC, however I had no clue that there were murmurs that Francis Mawson Rattenbury built Roedde House. Rattenbury being the designer of the Vancouver Art Gallery (former Court House) and Victoria’s Parliament Buildings and Empress Hotel [VancouverHistory].

John and I have yet to make our way over to Roedde House for a tour (Tuesday to Friday, 2:00pm to 4:00pm), or even Sunday tea (served from 2:00pm to 4:00pm) but it’s definitely on our list of things to do. They also do group tours by appointment, lecture series, musical evenings special events, and you can book the entire house for a small dinner party at a per hour rate.

Reasons for not writing on the subject yesterday include the fact that my mom was out of the country and wouldn’t have been able to read this anyway. Instead of writing out some sappy words I’ve decided to include some photos, sort of a visual aid to demonstrate just how far John and I have come.

In short, we wouldn’t have been able to get from here…

To here…

…Without the love and support of two ladies, whose strength (and patience) is that of a super-human.

Now for the sappy part… John and I are both the youngest our families and are really close with our mothers - who I think both refer to us still as their “babies” to friends, family, and that lady at the checkout in the grocery line up last week. While our older siblings were off at school we’d chill with our moms during the day, I’d like to think that I was my mom’s sidekick during those years. You know we’d hang out, go to the store, take a bus to see Oma and Opa, and I’d pretend to nap while she watched All My Children.

We might not get around to saying it often enough but our moms are the bee’s knees and while one is only a few cities away and the other is across the continent, both never leave our hearts and thoughts.

Sorting the results by most recent I came across the Flickr account of a website called w00tpwnage, which compares everything from Tiger vs Alligator, Wolf vs Wolverine, Astro Boy vs Mighty Mouse, and now Wired’s Sexy Geeks against each other in a head-to-head poll.

Rebecca Bollwitt vs Zadi Diaz

Of course like a sucker I check out the website, which is rather amusing, and also notice Lisa Bettany (aka Mostly Lisa) is up against Larissa Meek and that Amber MacArthur is vs Morgan Webb.

Frankly, there are so many sites out there comparing one person to another it’s enough to make your head spin off a crash down on your keyboard. I just have to say that it’s been a privilege to meet some great geeky women out there who don’t need to post photos of themselves in their underwear to gain readership (but if they do that doesn’t mean they’re any less real, credible or intelligent… in most cases anyway).

Sometimes it’s easy to get wrapped up in stats, ratings or who can code better PHP (even though that is kind of hot). I’d actually prefer it if you didn’t check out the “w00tpwnage” site and cast a vote for anyone… except maybe in the case of Mighty Mouse and Astro Boy. This whole online world should be about content (for a refresher see F*ck Stats, Make Art). From what I gathered when I met Amber and Lisa, is that it’s also for women who have a good head on their shoulders; what happens to fall into place beneath is actually pretty moot.

Linkage:

The people I have featured in my What The Surrey or Surrey File series are not your stereotypical products of Surrey that other Metro Vancouverites or Canadians tend to imagine.

I’m extremely proud to have been born and raised in Surrey and the people of the city are hard-working, dedicated, determined, unbelievably driven and intelligent individuals. A prime example is Paul Hillsdon, a high school student who will be running for City Council in 2008.

Over the past year or so, as my projects have come and gone I’ve become frustrated. I developed policies and plans to fix many of the problems I encountered in daily life. I created the South of Fraser Transit 2011 proposal because transit is lackluster out here. I created the Surrey Cycling Initiative because biking anywhere wasn’t a safe or viable transportation alternative in my city. I created the Transit Metropolis Vancouver vision because I wanted to be able to move around the region quickly, comfortably, and cheaply. [Paul Hillsdon]

I first discovered Paul after he found me, leaving a comment on a blog post of mine about transit in September 2007. I’ve been following his projects since including my current favourite, Civic Surrey. We then met in December at TransitCamp Vancouver [PaulHillsdon][Miss604].

Paul is also the brains behind numerous transit and sustainability initiatives and proposals in the region and by running in the municipal elections, I think we’re all hoping his well-researched ideas come to fruition. His platform revolves around four pillars: Sustainable Development, Green Spaces, Transportation Options, and Vibrant Communities.

According to the Surrey Now, “If successful is his bid, it’s believed Hillsdon would be the youngest member to ever hold a seat on council.”

You can find all of this information and more on his campaign site, PaulIn08.com which contains a blog on which you can ask him questions. It’s times like these I still wish I lived in Surrey, but I’m pretty sure I could get my family members to rally for Team Hillsdon (at least they better!)

If you would like to support Paul’s effort consider clicking on that donate tab on his site, writing about his efforts on your blog (or newspaper… or talk about him on your radio station) and look for his name on the Surrey City Council ballot this fall.

Big thanks to the folks at So.Cial for the delicious sandwiches at lunch (x126)

DaveO worked very hard to supply Drupalists with cozy, organic cotton and bamboo t-shirts for DCV08 and I must say, they are super comfy.

The Vancouver International Digital Festival is an event for the top creative minds working in digital media. Join visionaries from games and digital entertainment, Web 2.0, interactive design, animation and mobile applications, at this annual ‘must-attend’ in Vancouver, Canada. [VIDFEST]

Here is some more info from their “core facts” sheet:

VIDFEST 2008 is presented by New Media BC and runs May 21-24 on Granville Island. Venues include the Granville Island Hotel, Arts Club Theatre and the Emily Carr Institute

Nexon North America is bringing Wired Magazine’s Chris Anderson to VIDFEST 2008 to deliver keynote speech on the economy of “free”

VIDFEST takes place during the Vancouver Digital Week, also featuring the Vancouver International Games Summit (VIGS), Convergence 2008 and the PopVox Awards

There are several local webby companies up for PopVox Awards and anyone is encouraged to head to the website and vote for your favourite in categories ranging from Best Digital Animated Short, Best Mobile (Game) to Best Do-Gooder site (Social Change Initiative) or Homegrown Award (Best BC-based Venture).

Some nominees close to my heart include, ChangeEverything, Strutta, MemeLabs, Now Public, and the Knob Hockey folks (just to name a few).

Here’s a quick condensed version of the festival schedule overall:

May 21st - VIDFEST and VIGS Opening Reception at the Vancouver Art Gallery

May 22nd - International Partnering Forum (IPF) and Convergence 2008 (featuring my panel, yay!), then Happy Hour

May 23rd - Creative Exchange Conference (featuring speakers such as Heather “Dooce” Armstrong and Chris Anderson of Wired with the Keynote), Schmooze Lounge and the PopVox Awards

May 24th - Pitch ‘n’ Play and Recruiting Fair

There’s a TON of action going on having to do with all facets of digital media. You can purchase single tickets for Chris Anderson’s keynote, or daily passes for each of the mini festivals within starting at $50 for the PopVox Awards ceremony only, going up to $375 for VIP, and $875 for a joint pass for VIGS and VIDFEST.

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/05/the-power-of-twitter-tweet-apps-and-clients.html.

Here are a few more tips and tricks that I’ve come across in the Twitter microblogging community:

Twemes: First introduced at DemoCamp by Rochelle Grayson, Twemes is a website that comprehensively sorts and categorizes the things people Twitter about as long as they put a hashtag in front of it. Example, those currently at DrupalCamp Vancouver will be Twittering and including #DCV08 in their updates. If I go to Twemes, or the DrupalCamp website that is aggregating the Tweme, I can see filtered updates specifically pertaining to #DCV08 because of that tag.

Hashtags: I discovered this months after Twemes was released and it follows the same concept although you need to add a “bot” to your account to use it. For Twemes, you don’t need to do anything except start using a hashtag in your keywords/updates.

TwitBin: An alternative to Twitterfox, this slips your Twitter steam into your Firefox sidebar.

Twidget: Add a Twitter widget to your Mac’s dashboard.

Twitter Local: Hat tip to Jeremy Latham for Twittering about this earlier. You can filter updates to only view those from people within your geographical vicinity

Twinkle: Hat tip to Jenn Loether and John Biehler: “A location aware Twitter client. It features a slick presentation not unlike the web version of PocketTweats but also locates you and enables you to see who else is using Twinkle near you.” - [JohnBiehler.com]

Twitter Tweet Sheet: “There’s one things that annoys me about Twitter. Okay, there are two things: 1. They are always down. 2. There doesn’t seem to be one official place (including their own site) to get a complete list of mobile and IM commands.” - [Jason Theodor.com] Jason compiled an “easy to print” card that you can take with you for on-the-go Twittering.

From TweetClouds

And just for kicks you can read more about “Top Twitter Apps” on these lovely sites:

Recent recipients also include Volkmar (Wally) Sandvoss in 2007 and Bruno Zappone in 2006.

Surrey’s first ever “Good Citizen” was Len Shepherd.

“Len Shepherd was a Surrey municipal council member from 1932 until 1937. In 1937 he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly serving the Delta riding, covering the area of Richmond, Delta, Surrey and Langley. In his very first term as MLA, Len Shepherd presented a petition to this very House with over 3,100 names from the people of the Fraser Valley, asking that the new Pattullo Bridge be free of tolls. Very quickly, he became an avid advocate for the working people.” [Debates of Legislative Assembly]

This all makes me wonder what ever happened to Vancouver’s Good Citizen Award? Strolling the archives on VancouverHistory.ca I kept coming across recipients of the “Good Citizen Award” like Pearl Steen, Sister Frances, or Arthur William Delamont but it made me wonder if this award still exists today.

The first Good Citizen was fire chief John Howe Carlisle in 1922 and the title was since bestowed upon maybe good souls in the community every year but I haven’t heard of any new recipients since the 1980s. I believe there are awards for volunteers in Vancouver, but I’m still wondering whatever happened to the city’s recognition for its outstanding (and often selfless) members of the community with the “Good Citizen Award”.

Regardless, I’m pleased to see the folks of Surrey doing good in their neighbourhoods, schools and businesses. Congratulations to Mr. King for being Surrey’s 2008 Good Citizen of the Year.

Until Saturday evening the city will be overrun with Drupalists from across this great nation to learn, discuss, code and partake in some of the following:

Friday: Day One sessions at the SFU Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue from 9:00am to 6:00pm followed by the Fearless City Code Sprint at Delicados on Richards street.

Saturday: Day Two sessions at Workspace with lunch included - also featuring a mini Drupal job fair.

John and I had a chance to talk to Glenn of Image X Media, chat with a few familiar faces, give DaveO lots of hugs, then send our tired selves home.

If you’re heading to the sold out DrupalCamp make sure to tag any photos on Flickr with “dcv08” and hashtag your updates in Twitter with “#dcv08“.

They are now offering video blogging seminars (learn how to make video, how to promote it etc.) and with the cost of signup comes a Flip Camera for all those who register.

Not surprisingly, the workshop registrations soared and they have now sold out the first event. However, you still have a chance to win your way in if you head over to the Techvibes Blog and drop a comment on this post over the next two weeks.

Their first 20-spot session on May 13th is sold-out but they’ve added a 2nd workshop on May 28th and set aside a free seat (and video camera) for a Techvibes reader. [Techvibes]

The workshops are 3 hours long (2pm to 5pm), the registration fee of $200 includes the fancy new camera, and will take place at Ceili’s Irish Pub. I had a chance to use Colleen’s Flip last night and I have to say, it’s a pretty slick compact video-making device.

To those on Facebook, think “status updates”. Sites like Twitter, Jaiku and Pownce (just to name a few and not including all the video ones out there) allow folks to update their contacts or followers using brief 140 character max. messages. To better explain it, here’s another great video from CommonCraft.

The “power of Twitter” is pretty vast. Last night we were out having dinner and John put a call out on Twitter for people to join us, a short time later we were graced with Tanya’s presence, which was super fun.

When I was recording my bit for the Lab with Leo I Twittered that I was “backstage” and within 45 seconds Leo came out from the studio to meet me and shake my hand.

Most recently, Nadia from Meme Labs Twittered this news story… about Twitter.

Buck, a graduate student from the University of California-Berkeley, was in Mahalla, Egypt, covering an anti-government protest when he and his translator, Mohammed Maree, were arrested April 10.

On his way to the police station, Buck took out his cell phone and sent a message to his friends and contacts using the micro-blogging site Twitter.

The message only had one word. “Arrested.”

Within seconds, colleagues in the United States and his blogger-friends in Egypt — the same ones who had taught him the tool only a week earlier — were alerted that he was being held. [CNN]

People have various reasons for using Twitter, whether they want to meet up with other folks in the area, share a news story, use it to syndicate their blog posts, do a poll, have pointless battles, ask questions, or share what they ate for lunch that afternoon. Though sometimes I get a bit of a “chat room” feel when I see people sending endless messages back and forth, I certainly value having this tool at my disposal.

Two things of note: You can get intuitive clients that will bring in your Twitter feed so you don’t have to update from the website ie. Twhirl (for PC) or Twitterific (for Mac).

Cossette West invites you to attend Convergence 2008, a Digital Marketing and Communications Forum. Join other savvy marketing and communications professionals from across North America to learn how to stay competitive in the ever-shifting digital landscape. [Convergence2008]

I’ve been on a few panels before (and moderated one) and I have to say the talented people I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with just make it that much more exciting, informative, and entertaining.

This time is no different and I’m almost about to go into Wayne and Garth “I’m not worthy” mode seeing as how I’ll have Kate Trgovac on one side of my, and Darren Barefoot on the other.

I haven’t had much time to interact personally with Kate but she was with me on the victorious Team Blogger for CBC’s Test the Nation, she presented at the Northern Voice dinner, and most recently I saw her on a panel at Bridging Media.

Darren on the other hand is half of the world-traveling Capulet Communications marketing power duo who recently hooked John and I up with a Brother Printer and as a result, our faces were printed in the Wall Street Journal. Capulet is also responsible for the super handy “Getting to First Base: Social Media Marketing Playbook”, which is an e-book for purchase at SocialMediaReady.com.

Photo credit: Robert Scales on Flickr

Our panel will be moderated by Darren Roberts of Optimum Public Relations and we’ll be discussing blogger relations:

Influencers have grown beyond just traditional media outlets to include bloggers, who reign in the online space and who can drastically affect perceptions about your brand, your campaigns and/or any other aspect of your company operations. Are you listening? If so, are you talking back? In the very least, you should be working to tell your side of the story; at best, maximizing your message impact among these powerful individuals.

Given my recent tussle with Matchstick and other experiences over the years, I think all of us will be able to bring something from a blogger’s perspective and also from the professional landscape.

Convergence 2008 is taking place on Granville Island at the Arts Club Theatre on May 22nd from 9:30am until 5:00pm. More info is available on the website and you can check out the Techvibes as well for a preview.
