Present Perfect</title><content type='html'>PRESENT PERFECT&lt;br /&gt;En inglés utilizamos el tiempo presente perfecto cuando existe una conexión o relación entre el pasado y el presente. Tiene dos usos principales:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;a) Lo utilizamos cuando nos encontramos interesados en el resultado presente de algo que ocurrió en un momento no definido del pasado:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- The secretary has decided to look for a new job.&lt;br /&gt;La secretaria ha decidido buscar un nuevo trabajo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- I&#39;m afraid I have forgotten your name.&lt;br /&gt;Me temo que he olvidado tu nombre.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;b) Lo utilizamos para hablar acerca de una acción o situación que comenzó en el pasado y aún continúa:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- How long have you worked here?&lt;br /&gt;¿Cuánto tiempo has trabajado aquí?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- She has been away on business since last week.&lt;br /&gt;Ella se ha ausentado por negocios desde la semana pasada.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- I haven&#39;t seen Sylvia for several years.&lt;br /&gt;No he visto a Silvia durante varios.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Con el presente perfecto utilizamos How long...? (¿Cuánto tiempo...?) en preguntas relacionadas con la duración y for (durante) o since (desde) para las respuestas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- How long have you worked at OM Personal?&lt;br /&gt;¿Cuánto tiempo has trabajado en OM Personal?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Observa que usamos for para expresar la duración de una acción, y since para indicar cuándo comenzó la acción.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- I&#39;ve worked here for twelve months (for twenty years, etc).&lt;br /&gt;He trabajado aquí durante doce meses (durante veinte años, etc)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- I&#39;ve worked here since January (since 1990, since Christmas, etc).&lt;br /&gt;He trabajado aquí desde Enero (desde 1990, desde Navidad, etc)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A menudo el presente perfecto se utiliza con los adverbios just (justo), yet (aún), still (todavía), already (ya), ever (alguna vez), never (nunca), recently (recientemente), lately (últimamente), so far (hasta aquí), up to now (hasta ahora). Observa algunos ejemplos:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- They &#39;ve just signed an important contract.&lt;br /&gt;Ellos acaban de firmar un importante contrato.&lt;br /&gt;(RECUERDA: Present Perfect + JUST &amp;gt;&amp;gt; Acabar de hacer algo)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Sheila hasn&#39;t received an answer yet.&lt;br /&gt;Sheila no ha recibido respuesta aún.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Have you ever used this type of machine?&lt;br /&gt;¿Has utilizado alguna vez este tipo de máquina?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- We&#39;ve had good results so far.&lt;br /&gt;Hasta aquí hemos obtenido buenos resultados.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PAST SIMPLE&lt;br /&gt;Usamos el pasado simple para hablar de algo que sucedió en el pasado y que no tiene relación con el presente. Se refiere exclusivamente a un lapso de tiempo ya finalizado:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Pasteur made important medical discoveries.&lt;br /&gt;Pasteur realizó importantes decubrimientos médicos.&lt;br /&gt;(Si Pasteur viviera y continuara su carrera podríamos expresar, por ejemplo:&lt;br /&gt;Pasteur has made important medical discoveries)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Did you go to the meeting yesterday?&lt;br /&gt;¿Fuiste a la reunión ayer?&lt;br /&gt;(Si la reunión no se hubiese interrumpido aún podríamos expresar, por ejemplo:&lt;br /&gt;Have you gone to the meeting?)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Sandra worked in Paris for five years before moving to Rome.&lt;br /&gt;Sandra trabajó en París durante cinco años antes de mudarse a Roma.&lt;br /&gt;(Si Sandra continuara viviendo en París podríamos expresar, por ejemplo:&lt;br /&gt;Sandra has worked in Paris since 1990)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;¿Va quedando un poco más claro, amigo/a hispanoparlante?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Con el pasado simple usamos When...? y How long...? para realizar preguntas acerca del tiempo y duración de los acontecimientos en el pasado:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- When did you come to the States? (TIMING)&lt;br /&gt;¿Cuándo viniste a los Estados Unidos? (TIEMPO)&lt;br /&gt;- How long did you live in Buenos Aires? (DURATION)&lt;br /&gt;¿Cuánto tiempo viviste en Buenos Aires? With the third conditional we talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this condition. The third conditional is also like a dream, but with no possibility of the dream coming true.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;we have two clauses: CONDITION: PAST PERFECT + RESULT: WOULD HAVE + P.P.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice that we are thinking about an impossible past condition. You did not win the lottery. So the condition was not true, and that particular condition can never be true because it is finished. We use the past perfect tense to talk about the impossible past condition. We use WOULD HAVE + past participle to talk about the impossible past result. Around 7:30 a.m., she was lying sideways on her surfboard with her left arm dangling in the water, when a 14 ft tiger shark attacked her,[1] ripping her left arm off just below the shoulder. If the shark had bitten two inches further in, the attack would have been fatal. Hamilton had lost almost 60% of her blood that morning. Her friends helped paddle her back to shore, and fashioned a tourniquet out of a surfboard leash around what was left of her arm before rushing her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Her dad was supposed to have a knee surgery that morning but she took his place in the operating room. Initially, she adopted a custom-made board that was longer and slightly thicker which made it easier to paddle. She has observed that she has to kick a lot more to make up for the loss of her left arm. After teaching herself to surf with one arm, she has again begun surfing competitively. She is now back to using competitive performance short-boards again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In July 2004 Hamilton won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete of the Year.[2] She was presented with a special courage award at the 2004 Teen Choice Awards.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 2005, with one arm, Hamilton took 1st place in the NSSA National Championships, a goal she had been trying to achieve since before the shark attack. In 2008, she began competing full-time on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS). In her first competition against many of the world&#39;s best women surfers, she finished 3rd.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Film, television, magazines, and books&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since the attack, Hamilton has appeared on 20/20, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and The Tonight Show, as well as in magazines People and Time. Additionally, she was the cover story in the premier issue of niNe magazine.[3] Hamilton also won $25,000 on the August 7, 2009 edition of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?. She was stumped on a Grade 3 grammar question involving articles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 2004, MTV Books published Hamilton&#39;s book, Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board (ISBN 0-7434-9922-0), which describes her ordeal. Hamilton&#39;s story is also told in the 2007 short subject documentary film, Heart of a Soul Surfer, directed by Becky Baumgartner.
