Pushing back the hands of time, a hotel/restaurant in the Cotswolds market town of Tetbury has appealed to local gardeners to exchange their surplus fruit or vegetables for food and drink vouchers.

The Priory Inn, Tetbury, locally renowned for its unwavering commitment to local farms, growers and suppliers within a 30 Mile Zone of Tetbury* has extended its family of suppliers to include local gardeners and allotment owners.

Over the summer months, local growers have been turning up at the back door of the market town restaurant with armfuls of garden herbs, beautiful heads of fresh lettuce, trays of succulent berries and currants, ripe plums, apples and even occasionally freshly cut flowers for decorating the bar. In return they are given vouchers – to the current market value of the goods they donate – which they can use against food, drink or even hotel stays at The Priory Inn.

Director Dave Kelly says: “Any keen gardener goes through head-scratching periods of time in the summer and autumn when they don’t know what to do with all the food their plot has produced. True to old-fashioned bartering systems and values, we exchange this high quality produce for Priory Inn vouchers and our chefs work on getting the food out to our customers’ plates that same day.

“We have regular visits from local people who bring us their freshly harvested vegetables: runner beans, courgettes, tomatoes and radishes, soft fruits and berries and also armfuls of delicate herbs. The end result for them is an evening with us – possibly enjoying the food they have grown – and no cash exchanges hands. It gives everyone a great sense of satisfaction with the world!”

The Priory Inn is known for its high quality local food and drink, and it launched its “30 Mile Food Zone” in November 2008 as a commitment to supporting local businesses and providing local food and drink to its customers. Currently up to 90% of its food is now grown, produced or supplied from within 30 miles of Tetbury. Just this summer all the major brands of lager were replaced by local lager brewed by the family-owned Cotswold Brewing Company.

Your body has two “brains.”

You know about the one in your head, of course, but there’s also one in your gut. This one decides what’s considered food and what isn’t. It knows what you need for nutrition.

Your “gut brain” processes the antigens (molecules recognized by your system) and has a memory of what it’s supposed to digest, what should just pass through, and what needs to be destroyed.

What Is Gluten Anyway?

Here’s the thing…

Your “gut brain” thinks gluten is a foreign substance. It doesn’t know that it’s meant to be a source of nutrition. So, when gluten reaches your gut, it panics.

Your gut reacts by sending antibodies to attack the unknown substance. This causes your immune system to become hyper alert with auto-immune components. And it can cause your body to attack its own tissue.

In our current days there are many un-natural behaviors that can deplete our inner balance and well-being; the excessive consumption of process and cooked foods, the wearing of fabric clothes, the use of the modern toilet versus traditional squatting.  But perhaps, the most common ‘civilized behavior’ known, and according to recent studies, could be the main trigger for many imbalances and inflammatory diseases that society suffers today, could be the“disconnection from earth”, due to the use of insulated shoes, the excessive pavement, concrete and constructions, and electromagnetic fields going on out there in our cities.

Running and the use of shoes…

Humans have been running for at least 2 million years and for most of that time humans have run with bare feet. Modern running shoes were only invented on the mid 70s.

An interesting statistic shows that 60 to 85% of runners get injuries every year, and according to a Harvard University Professor, Daniel Lieberman, who started researching on the differences between bare foots runners and shoe runners, discovered that one of the main reasons for running injuries is caused for the impact of landing on the heels, due to the use of conventional running shoes, as a result of his research Professor Lieberman has become a bare foot runner himself.

“When you land on the heel your body comes to a dead stop, there is a rapid force, it is like somebody hitting you on the heel with a hammer about two to three times your body weight. When we started bringing barefoot runners into the lab we discovered that they didn’t like to do that, they typically landed on the top of their foot, underneath the head of the forth and fith metatarsal and then they bring their heel down”

“When you land on your heel is a big impact but barefoot runners typically run on the front of their foot, and then they bring their heel down. What they do is convert the energy into rotational energy falling vertically down, which will absorb the impact more gradually”

Nature’s free electrons…

He started investigating and placed a conduct system on his mattress and connected to a wire that went out his bedroom window to a rod pushed directly into the earth and found that the connection with this conductive mattress was equivalent, electrically, to lying directly on the earth.

After consulting with a scientist at UCLA, Clint started a blinded study and the result showed that out of sixty people with problems, pain and stiffness, 30 of them who slept with his version of “grounded mattress” for 30 days find that went to sleep more quickly, woke feeling rested, reduced stiffness, reduced chronic back and joint pain and improve general health.

I personally have experienced in my yoga classes how students attain a much more deep relaxation and focus when practicing yoga out in nature, touching directly the ground, the skin shines more, eyes become brighter. It is also quite notorious the feeling of energy flowing from the soles all the way up to the spine.

When we go barefoot billions of free electrons are absorbed into our bodies. Scientific Studies on “earthing technologies…

In collaboration with Dale Teplitz, Dr. Ghaly studied a group of 12 people reporting pain and poor sleep. The subjects were grounded (earthed) during sleep in their own beds. Saliva was tested to determine the daily cortisol levels before and after six weeks of sleeping earthed. Each day during the study, the subjects were also asked to assess symptoms of sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress.

Although Dr. Ghaly had set out to prove that the “earthing” concept was flawed, what he found was just the opposite. To his surprise, he discovered that “earthing” reduced nighttime levels of cortisol and shifted the 24-hour circadian cortisol rhythms toward normal. He also found that nearly all participants reported reduced or eliminated symptoms of a variety of pains and sleep disorders.

Diurnal cortisol secretion levels were measured and circadian cortisol profiles were evaluated in a pilot study conducted to test the hypothesis that grounding the human body to earth during sleep will result in quantifiable changes in cortisol. It was also hypothesized that grounding the human body would result in changes in sleep, pain, and stress (anxiety,depression, irritability), as measured by subjective reporting.

Twelve (subjects with complaints of sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress were grounded to earth during sleep for 8 weeks in their own beds using a conductive mattress pad. Saliva tests were administered to establish pre-grounding baseline cortisol levels. Levels were obtained at 4-hour intervals for a 24-hour period to determine the circadian cortisol profile. Cortisol testing was repeated at week 6. Subjective symptoms of sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress were reported daily throughout the 8-week test period. Measurable improvements in diurnal cortisol profiles were observed, with cortisol levels significantly reduced during night-time sleep. Subjects’ 24-hour circadian cortisol profiles showed a trend toward normalization. Subjectively reported symptoms, including sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress, were reduced or eliminated in nearly all subjects.

Results indicate that grounding the human body to earth (“earthing”) during sleep reduces night-time levels of cortisol and resynchronizes cortisol hormone secretion more in alignment with the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm profile. Changes were most apparent in females. Furthermore, subjective reporting indicates that grounding the human body to earth during sleep improves sleep and reduces pain and stress.

~Can electrons act as antioxidants? A review and comments ~

Abstract

A previous study demonstrated that connecting the human body to the earth during sleep (earthing) normalizes the daily cortisol rhythm and improves sleep. A variety of other benefits were reported, including reductions in pain and inflammation. Subsequent studies have confirmed these earlier findings and documented virtually immediate physiologic and clinical effects of grounding or earthing the body.

It is well established, though not widely known, that the surface of the earth possesses a limitless and continuously renewed supply of free or mobile electrons as a consequence of a global atmospheric electron circuit. Wearing shoes with insulating soles and/or sleeping in beds that are isolated from the electrical ground plane of the earth have disconnected most people from the earth’s electrical rhythms and free electrons.

The most reasonable hypothesis to explain the beneficial effects of earthing is that a direct earth connection enables both diurnal electrical rhythms and free electrons to flow from the earth to the body. It is proposed that the earth’s diurnal electrical rhythms set the biological clocks for hormones that regulate sleep and activity. It is also suggested that free electrons from the earth neutralize the positively charged free radicals that are the hallmark of chronic inflammation.

A relationship between cortisol and inflammation was established in the pioneering work of H. Selye published in the 1950s. Current biomedical research has led to an inflammation hypothesis that is establishing chronic inflammation as the culprit behind almost every modern chronic illness.

The research summarized here and in subsequent reports provides a basis for a number of earthing technologies that restore and maintain natural electrical contact between the human body and the earth throughout the day and night in situations where going barefoot on the earth is impractical. It is proposed that free or mobile electrons from the earth can resolve chronic inflammation by serving as natural antioxidants.
