Rebecca didn’t plan to become a mother who spent almost a year apart from her two little boys. For eight years, she had been clean – had built a life, started a family, and was raising her sons. Then she went home to care for her parents, and everything fell apart.

Her mother was neglected in a care facility during Covid. Grief and helplessness brought depression, and depression brought drugs back into Rebecca’s life. In the span of two years, she lost both of her parents, her marriage, and her home. Alex and Robby went to stay with a trusted friend while Rebecca tried to find her way back.

After six years on the streets, your generosity helped Miles find hope, healing, and a future at Phoenix Rescue Mission.

Miles spent six years living on the streets. A painful divorce in 2017 cost him his home, his career, and eventually his will to keep going. To numb the pain, he turned to drugs.

“I just gave up on life,” Miles remembers. “I had no hope that I was ever going to get clean. I thought I was going to die on the street. That was my horrifying truth.”

For two years, Miles slept in his car, moving from parking lot to parking lot until the vehicle was repossessed. After that, he spent four years unsheltered in the East Valley before making his way to central Phoenix, where he slept behind a restaurant in an alleyway for nearly two years.

10 Years on the Streets…

When we first met Juan, he was malnourished and on the verge of starving. At 6’1” and 150 pounds, he looked skeletal. Juan had been battling a fierce addiction for years, the last 10 of which he’d been homeless. The only way he survived the summer was by getting ice from gas stations and dumping chilled water over his head and body. “When you smoke meth, your body temperature rises,” he says. Life was miserable except for one bright spot. A flicker of hope – the Phoenix Rescue Mission’s Street Outreach Team.

At Phoenix Rescue Mission, we refuse to see this as unchangeable. Through our Street Outreach efforts, we meet people where they are—with Hope Tote hygiene kits, compassion, and a path toward stability. Our recovery and housing programs offer lasting solutions to break the cycle of homelessness, addiction, and poverty.

Because of these programs and friends like you, 1,270 people were rescued from the streets in fiscal year 2025—56% more rescues than last year!

The priceless impact of water

The water that Mark got from Daniel didn’t just help save his life, it helped to change it forever. “Daniel, one of the Street Outreach Case Managers on heat relief, was just pouring into me,” Mark says. Triple-digit temperatures on their own are enough to kill. But the combination of lack of nutrition, dehydration, and access to shelter puts our homeless neighbors in a losing battle against the brutal summer on the Valley streets.

A Day in the Life of a Case Manager

When he was a patient care technician working in a local emergency room, Dom got to help a lot of people. But every day he found himself wanting to do more. “I just felt really called to do more hands-on ministry or work with people,” he says. “I heard that Phoenix Rescue Mission did homeless outreach, and I thought, ‘That’s really cool. . . I would love to work hands-on and help people.’ So I interviewed, got the job, every door opened, and I’ve been here since. I love it.” In the year and a half since Dom has been one of our Street Outreach Case Managers, he’s seen firsthand how Code:Red, our heat relief campaign, saves and changes lives. Here’s what a day on the streets in the height of summer is like – and an example of how your love and support is making an undeniable, life-impacting difference.

Once the heat cranks up in the spring, we all start longing for September when it’ll hopefully start to cool down. But last year, the deadly heat lasted all the way through October. 

With two record-breaking heat summers in a row, all indications are that this year will be WORSE. 

There will be more people in need of heat relief. There will be more people who need to get off the street. There will be more people who need water, “Hope Totes,” transportation, and short- and long-term housing. 

There will be more men and women on the streets hospitalized, dying, and in need of recovery. And because of the support of friends like you, the Mission will be there to meet those needs.
