Then she found her way to Phoenix Rescue Mission.</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rebecca didn&rsquo;t plan to become a mother who spent almost a year apart from her two little boys. For eight years, she had been clean &ndash; had built a life, started a family, and was raising her sons. Then she went home to care for her parents, and everything fell apart.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Her mother was neglected in a care facility during Covid. Grief and helplessness brought depression, and depression brought drugs back into Rebecca&rsquo;s life. In the span of two years, she lost both of her parents, her marriage, and her home. A painful divorce in 2017 cost him his home, his career, and eventually his will to keep going. To numb the pain, he turned to drugs.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">&ldquo;I just gave up on life,&rdquo; Miles remembers. &ldquo;I had no hope that I was ever going to get clean. I thought I was going to die on the street. That was my horrifying truth.&rdquo;</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">For two years, Miles slept in his car, moving from parking lot to parking lot until the vehicle was repossessed. The scars on the outside only hint at what Liz carried within. Abuse and trauma marked her childhood. She was on her own by age 12, using drugs by 15, and deep into a life she never wanted by the time she became a mother of four. Liz reached a breaking point. At 6&rsquo;1&rdquo; and 150 pounds, he looked skeletal. Juan had been battling a fierce addiction for years, the last 10 of which he&rsquo;d been homeless. The only way he survived the summer was by getting ice from gas stations and dumping chilled water over his head and body. <em>&ldquo;When you smoke meth, your body temperature rises,&rdquo;</em> he says.  Life was miserable except for one bright spot. Through our Street Outreach efforts, <strong>we meet people where they are</strong>&mdash;with Hope Tote hygiene kits, compassion, and a path toward stability. Triple-digit temperatures on their own are enough to kill. But every day he found himself wanting to do more. &ldquo;I just felt really called to do more hands-on ministry or work with people,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;I heard that Phoenix Rescue Mission did homeless outreach, and I thought, &lsquo;That&rsquo;s really cool. . . I would love to work hands-on and help people.&rsquo; So I interviewed, got the job, every door opened, and I&rsquo;ve been here since. It&rsquo;s dangerous. It&rsquo;s deadly.&nbsp;</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">But, together, we can save&mdash;and change&mdash;lives like Rasha&rsquo;s, whose amazing story is in this month&rsquo;s special edition Code:Red eNewsletter.&nbsp;</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thank you for your generous support and prayers. By loving your neighbors, you are making an eternal difference.&nbsp;</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-already-looking-more-deadly-nbsp"><strong>Already Looking More Deadly&nbsp;</strong></h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the heat cranks up in the spring, we all start longing for September when it&rsquo;ll hopefully start to cool down. But last year, the deadly heat lasted all the way through October.&nbsp;</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">With two record-breaking heat summers in a row, all indications are that this year will be WORSE.&nbsp;</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">There will be more people in need of heat relief. There will be more people who need to get off the street.
